Kinross House is the architectural jewel in Scotland’s crown, and undoubtedly one of the finest private residences in the UK. The first neo-classical Palladian mansion built in Scotland, set in the first designed landscape in Scottish architecture history, Kinross House was the masterpiece of Sir William Bruce. Today, the House has been fully restored to create a majestic home which sits comfortably amongst the finest properties in the world and constitutes a joyous celebration of beauty, history, design and architecture. Kinross House won the UK Sotheby’s Restoration Award. The Estate offers the luxury and service of the world’s greatest hotels, and yet a stay here is truly a world apart. Enjoy the flexibility and freedom of the entire Estate, with total privacy, and the discreet, undivided attention of a hand-picked team of staff. Experience a fully bespoke stay with no compromises or set times, and a tailored menu crafted by our own chef using produce from our own walled kitchen garden. The interiors are breath-taking, with rich fabrics, intricate detailing and exquisite furnishings throughout the House. The House boasts a wealth of antiques and fine art, collected over the centuries and from all corners of the world which combine to produce an extraordinarily sophisticated environment. The immediate curtilage of the House comprises over 100 acres of woodland and beautifully landscaped gardens, and extends to magnificent Loch Leven – on an island in which stands the Loch Leven Castle, famous for being the place in which Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in the 1560s and from which she was forced to abdicate the throne, in favour of her infant son James VI, later to become James I of England - all part of the Estate and accessible by guests. The Loch and its surroundings play host to a number of sporting pursuits including world-class fishing and shooting. Kinross House is available as one of the most exclusive and prestigious private venues in the UK, offering an exceptional experience. Located just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, the Estate can accommodate up to 48 guests in 24 individually designed en-suite bedrooms and boasts a private boutique Spa. Helicopters are permitted to land directly on the grounds of the Estate. Whether you are looking to indulge clients, celebrate in style or simply get away with family, there is no finer place in all of Scotland. FOREWORD

CHAIRMAN’S FOREWORD

Brian Stein looks ahead to an exciting season thanks to the Club’s generous Players, Members and Sponsors

T

he 2022 season is underway and our fixtures list has never looked better. A packed season of polo including the welcome return of the Hurlingham Polo Association’s Coronation Cup, featuring England v Uruguay. Guards Polo Club really is the home of world-class polo at every level. Thanks to your loyal support over two unprecedented and difficult years, Guards Polo Club is in an unenviable position as it heads into its 67th season. The redeveloped Princes’ Ground impressed when played lightly last year and is expected to deliver some outstanding sport when brought fully into our polo schedule this summer. Headed up by our Chief Operating Officer James Neighbour and Director of Polo Antony Fanshawe, work has started on the penultimate phase of our grounds project, the refurbishment of grounds six and eight into two full-size grounds. If the weather is kind, we expect this work to be completed by the end of the year. In addition to your staunch support, our sponsors have been equally generous. Cartier continues as title sponsor of the prestigious Cartier Queen’s Cup until 2024, enabling us to deliver premier polo, on amazing grounds, for the world’s top players and ponies. John Collins has agreed to sponsor the Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup for another season, delivering 22-goal polo in mid-August. Last year’s competition offered plenty of memorable play, an array of stand-out prizes, including Cartier watches for the winners plus an elegant yet informal Clubhouse dinner for the players and their partners; an evening full of camaraderie and bonhomie before the serious business of match play got under way. Our Ladies Charity Tournament sponsor Clé de Peau Beauté extended its support by providing luxury gifts to our members at several events. This included our recent Members’ Reception to herald the start of the season. Travel restrictions may have stopped the Out-Sourcing team, headed by David Matsumoto, from travelling to the UK last year but that did not stop them from being 100% involved in life at Guards Polo Club. Out-Sourcing not only generously sponsored the Royal Windsor Cup but also took on the title sponsorship of HRH The Duke of Cambridge’s Royal Charity Polo Day at Flemish Farm. A hugely generous gesture considering the company knew they could not attend themselves. Such support also enabled this event to raise more than £500,000 for the TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s charities. David Matsumoto has recently confirmed that Out-Sourcing Inc will sponsor the Royal Windsor Tournament for a further four years – until 2026. This commitment is, in part, the company’s unique way of honouring HM The Queen in her Platinum Jubilee. Out-Sourcing has also purchased 70 trees for the Queen’s Green Canopy charity, one tree for each of Her Majesty’s reign. Access Bank remained a Partner of the Club during lockdown even though this private bank knew that they would be unable to host their charitable day due to the travel restrictions. We are indebted to them for their continued funding and look forward 8

Guards Polo Club is honoured to have HM The Queen attend the Club almost every year since the Club was founded. So this year we are delighted to honour Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, celebrating 70 years as our Monarch, on Sunday 5 June.

to welcoming their guests back to Smith’s Lawn this summer. Our friends at La Martina, headed by Becky Simpson, continue to deliver stylish clothing and innovative polo kit from their elegant Store at Smith’s Lawn. In addition, as title sponsors of the Varsity Day they continue to help raise the standard of student polo. It is 143 years since the Varsity Trophy was first played for. Cambridge won that historic first event, who will take home the honours on Saturday 4 June? Martin Collins remains part of our coveted stable of partners, with the all-weather experts continuing to manage the track at Flemish Farm. The newest member of our Corporate Partnership is Dorchester Collection’s Coworth Park. Generous discounts to Members when booking rooms or reserving tables, plus plenty of prizes for players throughout the summer. I am delighted to write that after an absence of two years we will again be hosting our charity shoot in the Park later this summer. Teams will be competing for the Charlie Stisted Memorial Trophy on Wednesday 22 June and funds raised on the day will be distributed between military charities. So it is very much business as usual at the Club in 2022. Philipp Mosimann and his team at Mosimann’s at Guards, including Tony Topi as the new Restaurant Manager and Nick Hebditch as Executive Chef will be delivering seasonal menus all summer. With Laurent-Perrier continuing as our official champagne partner we have all the ingredients to make this season a success on and off the field of play. So I look forward to meeting many of you during the coming season and would like to thank you all for your continued support of this great Club.

uards Polo Club was honoured to host HRH The Duke of Cambridge’s Royal Charity Polo Cup Day in early July 2021. This wonderful sporting day, held at the Club for the first time and sponsored by the Club’s Royal Windsor Cup partner Out-Sourcing Inc, raised awareness and substantial funds for several charities supported by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Brian Stein, Chairman of Guards Polo Club, said: “Guards Polo Club was delighted to be able to welcome HRH The Duke of Cambridge 18

and host his remarkable Royal Charity Polo Cup event. The Club is proud of its unique relationship with the Royal Family and it was wonderful that the Duke was once again able to compete at the Club founded by his grandfather, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. I would personally like to thank the patrons that offered their professional services for free. The charities benefiting from today’s polo match have suffered severe financial hardship and such generosity has been invaluable.” Out-Sourcing Inc’s David M. Matsumoto

Out-Sourcing also provided gifts to all the players and the guests attending the day. These organisations included Centrepoint, Family Action, Fields in Trust, East Anglia Children’s Hospices (EACH), Mountain Rescue England and Wales, Tusk and Forward Trust. Charlie Mayhew – Chief Executive of Tusk, commented on behalf of the charities. “We are immensely grateful to The Duke for choosing to support the charities today. KING OF THE DESERT Ali Albwardy, founder of Desert Palm Polo Club in Dubai and patron of the ultra-successful Dubai Polo Team reflects on his early days playing “sand polo” and why playing alongside his sons beats all his match success

How did you first get into polo? “I was introduced by a friend of mine who played “sand polo “in Dubai and it was great fun. I then went to UK to play the low-goal at Ham Polo Club and Guards Polo Club. I realised polo was fun and winning was even more fun – the first year I played we won every tournament we entered so I started investing in better horses and moved up a few levels to high-goal.” Did you have any equestrian experience as a child? “Not horses but plenty of experience with donkeys and camels. By the way, I prefer horses!” What has been the highlight of your own playing career? “I have so many good memories. Of course winning The Queen’s Cup and Gold Cup many times and representing Dubai have been dreams come true but honestly, playing with my sons beats it all. Polo for me is a way of life and playing with family and friends on champion horses will always be the best for me.”

Above:Above: HM The Queen presents the Cartier Queen’s Cup to Ali in 2012. Left: Dubai after winning the Queen’s Cup in 2005 Ryan Pemble, Ali Albwardy, Adolfo Cambiaso and Piki Alberdi

How much do you play today? “I play as much as I can. Desert Palm Polo Club has an exceptionally long season (October to early May usually) and I play whenever I am in Dubai, four or five times a week. When the Dubai Polo Team is in England, I play high-goal practices at my farm and the same goes for Sotogrande and Argentina. So basically, I play all year round! Just how I like it.” Both your sons have followed in your footsteps. Do they take advice from you? “They have been around polo since they were born so they know the game well. We have a very good relationship and we all share a passion for polo – I am lucky to say they do take advice from me, most of the time!”

Above right: Ali with his sons Tariq and Rashid. Above left: The winning Dubai team in Sotogrande, Spain. Below: Ali and Tariq join members of the Dubai Polo Team after their success in the British Open at Cowdray Park

In what year did you create Desert Palm Polo Club? “Desert Palm Polo Club was born in 1995. I wanted Dubai to experience what I had experienced in Europe. So, together with hard work and a few good friends helping me, we were highly successful.” Desert Palm is today one of the leading polo clubs in the Middle East. What has been the secret of your success? “Desert Palm has been built on a passion for the sport. We have built beautiful facilities, have top horses, a successful Academy for learning. Most importantly we have the best Members 26

“DUBAI IS LA NATIVIDAD — WE ARE ONE AND THE SAME. POLO FOR US IS ABOUT FAMILY AND SO OUR TEAMS ARE ONE” who, by the way, are my dear friends.” What was the biggest hurdle when creating Desert Palm? “The biggest challenge in the beginning was finding people to play. When we first created the Club there were not many people who played polo in the region. We got the message out through friends and taught a few Emiratis to play which was something that made me immensely proud. Sharing polo with my people has been extra special.” How has the sport changed since you first started to play? “The horses. The horses are getting better and better and without them, even the most talented players cannot stand a chance at success. This is why we have been focusing on our own polo pony breeding and we are delighted with the results.” The La Natividad team, winners of the Argentine Open 2021, were sponsored by Dubai. How involved were you with this team? 28

“Lolo is my friend and his family are my family. His children [Barto and Jeta] have grown up in the Dubai Polo Team so it’s natural that I would support them with anything they need to fulfil their potential.”

“I have supported them from day one, just like they supported me and the Dubai Polo Team from the beginning. We are one big family.” Will you be part of the La Nativdiad set-up in their UK high-goal campaign in 2022? If so, how? “Dubai is La Natividad – we are one and the same. Polo for us is about family and so our teams are one. Our families play together and our horse breeding is together. It’s how we like to do things.” Your relationship with Lolo Castagnola dates back more than 20 years. How important is this relationship to this team’s success?

G UA R D S P O L O C L U B O F F I C I A L Y E A R B O O K 2 0 2 2

What are your plans for Desert Palm going forward? “Desert Palm will go from strength to strength because we have the best team. We focus on having good horses, maintaining and developing our facilities to a high standard and making sure our members are happy. The key is for us to remember that it’s not about us as a family but it’s about our Members, both the new and more experienced players.” How would you like to be remembered by the global polo community? “As a man who gave more than he took from the sport. I love polo and I have been lucky to play all over the world, representing Dubai at the highest level. However, I also really enjoy supporting young and talented players and creating polo facilities for others to enjoy – even

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh rides out to play for Windsor Park in the Argentine Cup in 1967

ARCHIVE FIND RECALLS AN EARLIER ERA

Club Archivist Graham Dennis discovers some amazing archive images of the Club dating back to 1967

he Club archivist, Graham Dennis, recently purchased this previously unseen set of images featuring Guards Polo Club. The caption was vague, “Polo Windsor Great Park 1967”. However, after some detective work we can reveal that the match was for the Argentine Cup and was played on Sunday 16 July 1967. The teams playing were HRH The Duke of Edinburgh’s Windsor Park versus Harold Bamberg’s Eaglesfield team, who received 1½ goals on handicap. Windsor Park narrowly won the match 6-5½. Lord Patrick scored a hat-trick, his older 30

brother, The Marquis of Waterford, fired through a goal and JJ Alberdi put a couple of shots through the flags for Windsor Park. Meanwhile a pair of goals from both Eduardo Moore and Luis Maguire ensured Eaglesfield remained in contention throughout the match. The Club’s beautiful, copperplate record books confirm the teams as: Windsor Park: Lord Patrick Beresford (4); The Marquis of Waterford (4); Mr J J Alberdi (6); HRH The Duke of Edinburgh (5) Eaglesfield: Mr Harold Bamberg (1); Mr Paul Withers (6); Mr Eduardo Moore (6); Mr Luis Maguire (4). ✸

uards Polo Club, supported by La Martina, was delighted to host a competitive Youth Tournament in late August. Some 20 young players were divided into two age groups - 13-15 years old and 8-12 years old. Some familiar names from the high-goal were sprinkled among the five teams such as Toccalino, Monteverde, Muzzio and Araya. The older competitors took part in four chukkas of four minutes each while the younger ones played three chukkas of five minutes each. Lucio Toccalino, a member of La Martina Minis, was named the Most Valuable Player in the younger category, while the judges could not decide between Estanislao Darritchon (Guards

C

lé de Peau Beauté, the sponsor of our Ladies Charity Polo Tournament since 2021 is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. This iconic brand, “The Key to Skin’s Beauty” was created to push the boundaries of skin cell science, maximising skin’s natural radiance and has always been at the cutting edge of skincare innovation, using the most potent, scientificallyproven ingredients to forge new frontiers in advanced skin-cell science. Today, Clé de Peau Beauté has grown into a luxury skincare brand with an ever-expanding global presence. With unwavering dedication, it continues to bring the highest-quality skincare, base makeup, and colour makeup. Unmatched hospitality and customer experience are at the brand’s core, and science that, at every turn, hands you the key to a most radiant future. As skin cell science pioneers, Clé de Peau Beauté seeks to understand radiance on a fundamental level; to look beyond mere surface concerns and unlock the cellular potential within skin. I n 2 0 1 1 , a f te r d e c a d e s o f re s e a rc h , Clé de Peau Beauté concluded that skin has the ability to process and respond to information, just like the brain. They went on to find that skin cells have the innate ability to distinguish between good and bad stimuli. This phenomenon of Skin Intelligence – unlocking it, supporting it, amplifying it – has become the base of everything Clé de Peau Beauté does.

Introducing Key Radiance Care T h e K e y R a d i a n c e C a re c o l l e c t i o n i s Clé de Peau Beauté’s essential, daily skincare ritual, designed to specifically empower Skin Intelligence. Formulated with the exclusive complex, Skin-Empowering Illuminator, each step enhances the regimen’s overall effectiveness for your most radiant skin yet. In just three daily steps, the power of 40 years of science is distilled into your everyday routine; starting with an iconic serum, followed by the hydrating lotions, and finishing with a resilient and replenishing emulsion or cream. Step 1: Awaken Radiance Clé de Peau Beauté’s The Serum is the first step in the Key Radiance Care ritual. The unique formula includes an algae complex – Kelplex, a trio of green, red and brown kelp extracts to help awaken the skin’s regenerative powers, leaving it looking visibly plumped and healthy. Like the mind, the skin is smart. The Serum leverages Skin Intelligence to support your skin’s maximum ability to restore and protect itself. Powered by precious Platinum Golden Silk, it helps you respond to the good (nutrients, sleep, moisture) and the bad (pollution, stress, UV rays) for your best skin. For maximum impact, apply three pumps of The Serum morning and evening onto freshly cleansed skin.

Step 2: Nurture Hydration Follow up the nutrient-packed The Serum with a nurturing and hydrating lotion. Clé de Peau Beauté’s Hydro-Softening Lotion & Hydro-Clarifying Lotion offer two formulas designed for different skin needs to instantly and intensively hydrate and balance skin to help eliminate the appearance of roughness and dryness. The Hydro-Softening & HydroClarifying Lotions have a clear liquid consistency, perfect for absorbing by the skin. Apply to a cotton pad and smooth gently over the face following the application of The Serum. Repeat both morning and evening to leave skin feeling deeply replenished and with visibly diminished pores. Step 3: Boost Resilience Finish off your Key Radiance Care skincare routine with a targeted emulsion or cream to boost and support your skin and help build resilience. Formulated with Time Tune Complex to support moisture levels, day and night, skin looks youthfully vibrant and radiant with continued use. During the day, reach for Clé de Peau Beauté’s Protective Fortifying Emulsion or Cream containing UV protection to help guard against environmental aggressors such as UVA, UVB, blue light and infrared rays. Both formulas also make for the perfect base for foundation. At night, use Clé de Peau Beauté’s Intensive Fortifying Emulsion or Cream to moisturise and nourish skin while you sleep. For the emulsions, apply two pumps to a cotton pad and lightly sweep over skin. For the creams, take two pearl-sized amounts to a fingertip, then smooth gently over skin for a flawless finish.

TRIBUTE MOMIN SHEIKH DECEMBER 1963 – SEPTEMBER 2021

The Guards Polo Club community was shocked last September at the death of a much-loved Home Elected Player and Patron, Mo Sheikh, following a period of illness

M

omin, known to all as Mo, had been a member of Guards Polo Club since 2006. He ran medium and low goal teams under various banners but most recognisably as BHC Polo and latterly as the Bridge House of Twyford Polo Team. These teams took their name from his business interests – Mo was a pioneer in retirement living. He achieved much success in polo, especially here at Smith’s Lawn, adding his name to some coveted trophies including the Duke of Cornwall, the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s Centenary, the Duke of Wellington, the Autumn

Nations Tournament and the Town & County Championship. Mo was also successful in raiding Cowdray Park’s trophy locker, registering wins in the Holden White Cup and Dollar Cup in past seasons. Mo’s love of polo also saw him create an opportunity for the next generation of players. He was instrumental in the creation of the Copenhagen Cup schools tournament at Guards Polo Club. This competition allows polo-playing schools to compete competitively on the top-quality grounds at Smith’s Lawn, delivering an unprecedented opportunity for these student players. young players have come through the initial experience of playing at Guards Polo Club whilst at school and then moving on to playing at the Club as professional players and patrons, even up to the Queen’s Cup level. This is a true legacy of Mo’s passion for polo and has helped inspire the next generation of polo players. In addition to his passion for playing polo, Mo was also a long-standing Board Director, representing the Amateur Playing Members for some seven years at the Club. He contributed to the good governance and efficiency of the Club with his subtle but well-informed inputs and suggestions, always having the values and ethos of the “gentlemanly nature” of the sport at the forefront of his proposals. Indeed, Mo was always impeccably dressed and set a high standard for all to aspire to, whether he was in the Royal Box, attending a meeting, on the polo pitch or enjoying the après-polo. Mo lived his life “flat out” in the same manner as he would invariably be seen entering the field of play. Whilst others would be in a hand-canter, working on their swing before the resumption of play, Mo would be giving his steed a full gallop to get ready for the ball being brought into play. Ever-smiling and ever kind and gracious to all he met, Mo touched many hearts with empathy, respect and without any discrimination of status or situation. This distinguished gentleman of the sport will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. The Chairman, Board of Directors, Players and Members send their deepest condolences to Mo’s wife, Sapna, their children and the wider Sheikh family. Vivek Rawal 62

TRIBU TE / CL A IRE TOML INSON

TRIBUTE CLAIRE TOMLINSON FEBRUARY 1944 – JANUARY 2022

The highest handicapped lady player who also revolutionised polo coaching

C

laire Tomlinson may not have been a playing member of Guards Polo Club but warrants a tribute in our Yearbook thanks to her unparalleled influence on the game of polo for more than half a century. She single-handedly secured the rights of women to compete in high-goal competitions from the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) and then went on to practice what she had preached, winning the Queen’s Cup here at Smith’s Lawn in 1979 with her Los Locos team. She also has her name engraved on the 22-goal Warwickshire Cup and the Cowdray Park Challenge Cup when it was played for at that level. At the height of her playing career Claire was registered at five goals. This was long before ladies’ handicaps were introduced and makes her the highest handicapped woman player ever, a record that still stands to this day. It is not surprising that

DESPITE BEING THE BEST PLAYER ON THE OXFORD UNIVERSITY POLO TEAM LADIES WERE NOT ALLOWED TO COMPETE IN THE VARSITY MATCH. SO CLAIRE SET ABOUT GETTING THE RULE CHANGED such a remarkable player added her name to a raft of world-class tournaments. This includes our 15-goal Royal Windsor Cup in 1980, ’81, ’96 and 2010. Other Club victories include two wins in the Archie David Cup. Claire’s battles to get women players recognised started when a student at Oxford. Despite being the best player on the Oxford University polo team ladies were not allowed to compete in the Varsity match. So Claire set about getting the rule changed, although she was listed as “Mr Lucas” in the 1964 event! But two years 64

later, as Claire Lucas, she captained the Oxford team to victory in the 1966 Varsity match, winning the game 7-0, the first time Cambridge registered a zero score. These successes were in addition to her representing the university at fencing, squash and, most surprisingly, ploughing! Claire’s parents, Arthur and Ethel Lucas were both keen players. Her father

G UA R D S P O L O C L U B O F F I C I A L Y E A R B O O K 2 0 2 2

founded Woolmer’s Park Polo Club at the family home in Hertfordshire in 1949 and was a key figure in the resurrection of polo after the Second World War. Claire and her siblings, John and Pat, all inherited their parents’ passion for the game. It was while at Oxford that Claire met her husband, Simon Tomlinson, who had first played polo when serving in the Army.

I NTTREIRBVUI TEEW/ C L A I R E T O M L I N S O N

They went on to form the successful Los Locos team – meaning “The Mad Ones”. Initially Simon and Claire started playing polo across all levels except high-goal at Cirencester Park Polo Club. This included winning the County Cup some four times. Later they resurrected the Beaufort Polo Club, developing it into a leading UK polo club. Following their divorce, Claire and Simon’s sons, the England internationals Luke and Mark Tomlinson, took over the running of Beaufort Polo Club, continuing their parents’ legacy. Their sister, the equine vet Emma Wood, runs her Tomlinson Equine practice, a successful equine and reproduction centre, at this location too. 66

In addition to fighting for recognition for women in polo, Claire was focused on improving coaching in polo. She worked as a senior HPA coach at Pony Club and International level and worked in partnership with David Morley and Major Hugh Dawnay to develop a world-class coaching system for the HPA. She also taught TRH The Duke of Cambridge and The Duke of Sussex to play when they were younger and coached England teams at every level, including at the World Championships in 2001 and 2004. Claire was a one-off whose like we are unlikely to see again. We send our deepest condolences to Claire’s family and all the team at Beaufort Polo Club. ✸ Diana Butler

READY TO PLAY

Antony Fanshawe, Guards Polo Club’s Director of Polo, is in upbeat mood as work begins on redeveloping Grounds Six and Eight and the Club welcomes a raft of new playing members

A

IMAGES: IMAGES OF POLO

s we head into the 2022 season, I want to start by thanking all the players who have supported this Club over the past two years. Covid threw far too many curve balls at us but we pulled through stronger and fitter than ever before. That is thanks to all of the teams that stayed with us, supported our vision and entered our tournaments. My personal thanks must go to Tara Bown here in the Polo Office and all the ground staff that worked so hard last year to ensure we could play so many games. Sadly Peter Svoboda left the Club in December after 10 years as Head Groundsman but we are fortunate to have secured the experienced Paulius Kuklinskas to take on this demanding role, ensuring a smooth and effortless transition at a key time for the Club. 68

Polo came back with a vengeance last season; so many people showing their love of the sport. Ironically, I believe Covid reignited our passion for the game – when we thought we might not be able to play we grabbed every opportunity with both hands. Because this Club worked so hard to open safely and successfully in 2020 the global polo community were able to plan their 2021 season in confidence, knowing that Guards Polo Club would deliver plenty of competitive sport. We are now reaping the rewards of that effort. The Club heads into this new season with a strong playing membership – a record number of players have joined Guards Polo Club over the past year – accompanied by our impressive fixtures list. We are very much ready to play at every level in 2022.

G UA R D S P O L O C L U B O F F I C I A L Y E A R B O O K 2 0 2 2

Despite still being in uncertain times – the price of diesel, the war in Ukraine, covid regularly returning – we are also in the incredible position of being able to move forward with the penultimate stage of our grounds plan, the redevelopment of Grounds Six and Eight. If the weather is kind to us at key times, we aim to deliver level, dry, full-size fields from next season. The Princes’ Ground has already exceeded my expectations and will come into full use this season. We will be playing 22-goal polo on what, I believe, is the best polo field in the world this summer and I see no reason why Grounds Six and Eight will not be equally impressive once they have bedded in. Of course such a project does not come without its inconveniences but it is important to remember our end goal – to deliver six, full-size, world-class, laser-levelled grounds at Smith’s Lawn. We plan to complete this £3million+ grounds project by rebuilding Ground Four in 2023. The ultimate result will not just be of huge benefit to our players but also for our Social Members and sponsors too. The ultimate aim is to play

all of our polo here at Smith’s Lawn. In the short-term we are working hard to make sure that the works have as negligible an impact on your polo as possible. Over the winter we added some 80 miles of drainage to the polo fields at Flemish Farm and The Princes’ Ground so that these grounds handle wet weather. We have fully upgraded the irrigation system at Smiths Lawn, replacing more than a mile of underground pipework and adding new irrigation reels so that we can more accurately and quickly can irrigate in dry

Antony Fanshawe treading in divots on the newly created Princes’ Ground.

“ IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER OUR END GOAL – TO DELIVER SIX, FULL-SIZE, WORLD-CLASS, LASER-LEVELLED GROUNDS AT SMITH’S LAWN” weather. We have replaced the vertidrain machine and added a new “hollowcoring” machine that will help speed the recovery of our fields. Of course Ground Four will be in use this season and we have successfully approached Beenhams Farm, Westcroft Park and Black Bears to ensure that we can play a number of our games with them this season. So it is all systems go for an actionpacked season for everyone. Don’t forget though that my door is always open if you want to talk about your season. My success is your success so let us all make this season a winning one. ✸

The Queen’s Ground looking immaculate and ready to play in 2021. With improved draining and new irrigation machinery, everything is in place to ensure all the grounds at Smith’s Law and Flemish Farm can deliver with every game, whatever the weather

CARTIER QUEEN’S CUP

SUNDAY 27TH JUNE 2021

CARTIER QUEEN’S CUP TEAMS UAE POLO TEAM, SCONE POLO PARK PLACE, KING POWER

H

H Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the daughter of the Ruler of Dubai, and her UAE Polo Team won the 2021 edition of the Cartier Queen’s Cup. This talented team, which had impressed throughout the tournament and went on to dominate the final. They beat David Paradise’s Scone Polo 10-6 after six enthralling chukkas, adding their name to the trophy for the first time. Scone Polo started favourites to win this final as they were featuring the World’s Number One player Adolfo Cambiaso, some amazing horsepower and Adolfo’s 15-year-old son Adolfo Cambiaso Junior, who plays with a maturity and courage well beyond his years. However plenty of stand-out play from the UAE Polo Team’s trio of talent - Tomy Beresford, Tomas Panelo and 100

Polito Pieres – ensured that the UAE team not only dominated the game but took home the coveted trophy. HH Sheikha Maitha received the cup from Cartier UK Managing Director, Laurent Feniou. Her team-mate, 21-year-old Tomas Panelo was named the Cartier Most Valuable Player, while JB Bleach, an 11-year-old chestnut mare, owned by the UAE Polo Team and played this afternoon by Polito Pieres received the Cartier Best Playing Pony prize. This pony was bred by the former England polo team captain James Beim. Fifteen world-class teams had entered the competition, delivering some of closest and most exciting 22-goal polo seen for some years. One league match, featuring Park Place and King Power, went to eight chukkas and widened goals! These two teams met again in the subsidiary final, with Park Place again winning the match. Although this time they secured a 12-9 victory after just six chukkas. Laurent Feniou awarded the Cartier Trophy to the Park Place team, who had played without their injured patron, Andrey Borodin. Cartier has generously sponsored this high-goal tournament since 2012 and has been a supporter of polo worldwide for more than 35 years. Therefore Cartier was delighted to again celebrate the final in the company of friends of the Maison. OUT-SOURCING INC. ROYAL WINDSOR CUP TEAMS EMLOR, BARDON POLO TEAM, GREEN GATES, TWELVE OAKS

S

pencer McCarthy received the Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup from HM The Queen after his Emlor team delivered a powerful performance to win this thrilling final. With a half a goal on handicap already on the scoreboard due to Poroto Cambiaso’s mid-season handicap rise, Emlor held their nerve to claim the Club’s oldest trophy 8½ – 8. This is the second time that Spencer has added his name to the UK’s leading 15-goal tournament trophy, also winning with Emlor in 2007. Spencer had a stand-out game, making the most of any space and running the ball down the field. He also scored in the first chukka. Out-Sourcing’s Most Valuable Player Max Charlton was sharp shooting with penalties, converting four in this match, while team-mate Richard Tyrone produced some stylish play through all five chukkas to ensure Emlor remained a formidable opponent. Surprisingly, Andras Tombor’s Bardon were 106

struggling in the initial stages of the match, trailing 5½ -1 at the end of the second chukka. They got themselves back in contention in the final two chukkas though. Poroto Cambiaso and Kian Hall scoring three goals in the fourth between them to start closing the gap. Although Emlor successfully converted two penalties to maintain their lead. So with the score reading 7½-5 going into the final chukka this was suddenly anyone’s game. Max maintained Emlor’s advantage by converting a penalty before Poroto found the flags. Isidro Strada, who has been strong for Bardon throughout this tournament, then scored before successfully converting a penalty to bring this game very much alive – 8½ -8 with time ticking away. So when Bardon were awarded a penalty with little time left on the clock, Out-Sourcing’s guests and the day’s many spectators were on the edge of their seats. Was this the moment when Bardon would snatch a last-minute win? The pressure was evident on the field too as Isidro uncharacteristically sent this penalty wide, ensuring Emlor won the game. HM The Queen, accompanied by Mr Andrew Bentley and Mr Charlie Bruin, presented the impressive Out-Sourcing prizes to all the players and then awarded the Best Playing Pony prize

to Genie, who had been played by Max Charlton. This 12-year-old bay mare is Max’s favourite retrained racehorse in his string and he had played her in the second chukka. Out-Sourcing Inc. has sponsored this tournament since 2018 but travel restrictions due to the global pandemic meant that the Out-Sourcing team, who are based in Tokyo, were unable to attend the final. However as the tournament was streamed live, they were able to watch every moment via Guards TV. Twenty-one teams had entered this year’s tournament and earlier in the day Noor Khadra’s Green Gates won the subsidiary final for the Mountbatten Trophy. They defeated Charlie Wooldridge’s Twelve Oaks in an equally fast-paced game. Twelve Oaks were 6-3 up at half-time but then the dynamics changed. Twelve Oaks failed to score at all in the final two chukkas while Green Gates’ Charles Cooney and Diego Cavanagh – the tournament’s leading goal-scorer coming into this final – found five goals between them. This late rally ensured that 108

it was Green Gates who won the match 8-6. Mr Nick Tubbs, representing Out-Sourcing Inc. and a Director of Out-Sourcing UK, presented these prizes. Immediately after the polo Guards Polo Club welcomed the return the British Driving Society’s parade of champions on The Queen’s Ground. ark Place made history at Guards Polo Club in late August. Andrey Borodin’s squad is the first team to win the impressive, 22-goal Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup. Although Alessandro Bazzoni’s Monterosso team made Park Place work hard for this victory, keeping themselves in contention until the final bell. There was little between these two sides for much of the match, with both teams producing strong defensive play which kept the goal judges idle. Park Place had a narrow 3-1 lead at half-time but the players, and the packed grandstands, knew that this advantage was on a knife-edge and could change at any time. There had only been a goal between these two sides when they met in the league stages of the Club’s newest tournament, again in favour of Park Place (9-8). In the fifth chukka Facundo Pieres turned up the heat a little, making the most of some space to push Park Place ahead 4-3. When he had the chance to successfully convert a penalty 112

many wondered if this was the moment that Park Place would now run away with the match. Monterosso’s Ignacio Toccalino had other ideas though. He successfully converted a penalty to put Monterosso back in contention. Facundo Sola then had two chances for Monterosso in the sixth but sent them wide and as nobody else had a shot at goal in this final period the score remained stuck at 5-4, confirming Park Place’s victory. John Collins, the founder of Talacrest and sponsor of this new high-goal tournament, produced some amazing prizes for all players – and match officials – on finals day, including Cartier watches for the winners. Juan Britos was named Talacrest Most Valuable Player while Machitos Puccini, owned by Monterosso and played by Facundo Sola, was named the Talacrest Best Playing Pony. This seven-year-old, bay mare is one of Sola’s favourites. Appropriately for a title sponsor who is the world’s most experienced classic Ferrari dealer, having sold in excess of about 1,750 Ferraris to the value of more than $1billion, the teams were not introduced on the field on horseback but from an impressive array of Ferrari. A former high-goal polo patron himself, John Collins said when on signing this new partnership: “I have been involved with polo at Guards

Polo Club for more than 30 years and so am thrilled to be able to support the Club in this high-goal competition. I know from first-hand experience of playing high-goal at Guards that the opportunity for players to compete at the highest level on the best grounds is invaluable.” Five teams entered this first edition of the Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup, with each team playing the others over the previous three weeks. So both teams in the sub final for the Talacrest Trophy, Sheikha Maitha’s UAE Polo Team and Andras Tombor’s Bardon, had met before. In that first encounter the UAE team had comfortably won 13-8. So Bardon, playing in their first 22-goal tournament, came to this game having done their homework and dominated the first half. Matias Machado, who was later named the Talacrest Trophy Most Valuable Player was outstanding in the first half, putting Bardon comfortably ahead 7-2. UAE Polo Team, no stranger to the big occasion, closed the gap in the second half, forcing this match into extra time. This was the first time in the entire tournament that overtime had to be played. Bardon were awarded a penalty early into the extra time which Fran Elizalde converted to win the match 10-9. ✸ 114

H Sheikha Maitha’s UAE Polo Team cemented their position as the leading ladies’ polo squad in 2021 by winning the Clé de Peau Beauté Guards Ladies Charity Polo Final. The Sheikha’s team, featuring the 10-goaler Hazel Jackson, defeated Alicia Woods’ La Ruleta (rec ½ goal on handicap) 8-3½ on The Queen’s Ground in late August. These two teams had met in the 2019 final of this tournament, with La Ruleta taking the honours then. UAE Polo Team were taking no chances this time and dominated the match from the first whistle. Hazel started the goal 116

scoring, with team-mates and sisters, Cata and Juana Lavinia following suit. This ensured UAE Polo Team were 3-½ up after the first chukka. A fabulous field goal from Cata, who was later named the Clé de Peau Beauté Most Valuable Player, put UAE further ahead in the second. When she was hooked out of a play in the same chukka, Hazel was perfectly placed to pick up the ball and fire through the goal. Nina Clarkin, also playing off 10-goals, successfully converted a 40-yard penalty to get La Ruleta off the mark before the half-time bell but Alicia’s team were now playing catch-up. The Sheikha successfully converted a 30-yard penalty in the third, while team-mate Cata closed this chukka with another goal. Despite trailing for the entire match La Ruleta never gave up fighting. Good teamwork from Nina and Danielle Lussi produced a good goal in the third and some smart play from Nina and Alicia in the fourth secured another goal for La Ruleta. However with Hazel finding the flags once more in this final chukka, UAE Polo Team’s victory was never

in doubt. Helen Wood, General Manager of Clé de Peau Beauté, presented the prizes, including the Lord Patrick Beresford Trophy to HH Sheikha Maitha. Helen also awarded the Best Playing Pony Prize to Matuza Perry. This seven-year-old was played by Cata in the first and third chukkas and is owned by her father, the professional player Fabio Lavinia. This was the first year of Clé de Peau Beauté’s generous sponsorship of the Guards Ladies Charity Polo Tournament and so all the players headed home with some fabulous gifts. Non-players also benefited from Clé de Peau Beauté generosity as everyone dining in the Clubhouse received a gift too. This luxury skincare and makeup brand was also supporting UNICEF UK on finals day and so there were several fundraising opportunities including a live auction in the Clubhouse. The event raised more than £6,000 which will go towards UNICEF’s work with the COVAX initiative, which aimed to deliver two billion covid vaccine doses to some of the poorest nations in the world by the end of 2021. Lydia Raw and Victoria Roe from UNICEF UK presented the prizes for the second match, for the Clé de Peau Beauté Charity Plate. This match featured several of the Club’s lady patrons and players plus two professional lady players – Nina Clarkin for Clé de Peau Beauté and Lia Salvo for Guards Polo Club. In a much tighter game Guards Polo Club (rec ½ goal) won the match 6½– 3. Elodie Avarguez was named the Most Valuable Player while Clé de Peau Beauté’s Mindi Byrne received the Best Playing Pony Prizes, including a stunning floral headcollar, for Niagara. Seven teams had entered this year’s 18-goal ladies’ tournament and so the first ladies match of the day was for the equally competitive sub final. This was a win for Annita van der Hoeven’s Nipas-ESP. They beat Team Tonic/Mount Loftus 5-3 in the closest game of the day. ✸ TEAMS

xford retained the coveted La Martina Varsity Trophy, defeating their historic rivals, Cambridge, in a competitive match under a blazing sun in early June. This fixture had not been able to be played in 2020 due to the pandemic and so the Club and La Martina were delighted to welcome the students, their families and friends back to the Club for this key match. Oxford has dominated this university test – which dates back to 1879 – in recent years; Cambridge last took the trophy back to East Anglia in 2014. The 2021 contest was a closer affair than some of the more recent contests - Oxford winning the game 8-3 – but the Varsity is always played open, which was not to Cambridge’s advantage this year. That said, Cambridge kept Oxford in their sights throughout the four chukkas Tamara Gibbons, an experienced Varsity player for Oxford, was named the La Martina Most Valuable Player, a prize she had previously received in 2019. Meanwhile, Cambridge’s Junaid Safdar headed home with the Best Playing Pony prize. This was awarded to Chasco Laguna, a pony bred by the high-goal player Alfredo Bigatti. by La Martina for the past five years, began with an equally competitive schools match featuring Harrow and Eton (rec ½ goal) for the Jenny Walton Masters Trophy. Harrow narrowly won this match with school’s number three Hector Rogberg delivering a particularly powerful performance. manuel and Yolanda Arber’s Emsworth Polo Team dominated the final of the Hildon Archie David Cup. With an average age of 19, this young team overwhelmed their opposition, Tchogan/ Libertine, to win the UK’s leading eight-goal tournament 9-3. Some great team play saw Emsworth create a 5-0 lead at half-time. Gonzalo Ferrari, who spends his winters working for the La Dolfina team in Argentina and was playing three of Adolfo Cambiaso’s ponies in this game, teamed up brilliantly with Zac Beim to deliver some great plays on the Princes’ Ground. The Arber siblings, whose parents play with the family’s Four Quarters teams, were equally impressive and Emsworth’s cohesive style of play proved hard to beat. Hugo Taylor, who had been playing in the high-goal Cartier Queen’s Cup for the UAE Polo Team II just a few days earlier, and Tommy Severn combined well together for Tchogan/ Libertine but luck seemed against them. Their team-mate Alexander Nix was particularly keen to win this tournament as his partner, Olympia Paus, had won the subsidiary earlier in the afternoon, but despite some good chances it was not to be. Emanuel Arber was later rewarded with the Hildon Most Valuable Player prize. Team-mate Gonzalo received the Best Playing Pony prize for Vero. This 12-year-old chestnut mare was owned and bred by Matias Ballesteros and he joined Gonzalo and the Emsworth grooms for the presentation by Platina Tong. The sub final for the Caterham Cup was a much 126

closer affair, played earlier in the day. Quixote defeated last year’s winners, Louise Jebson’s CANI, 10-7. The third game of this tournament, for the Claude Pert Trophy, is just for those Club teams that have not made it through after the league stages. This was another close contest between Home Farm (rec ½ goal) and Shakib Polo. Oliver Heard’s Home Farm came out best, with Louis joining his brother to deliver this win. ✸ TEAMS

ardon delivered some impressive team play in the initial stages of the Indian Empire Shield Final to ensure they would win this coveted 18-goal trophy. Andras Tombor’s team defeated old adversary Emlor (rec ½ goal on handicap) 6- 5½ in five, fast-paced chukkas. Seven days earlier these two teams’ fortunes had been reversed in the 15-goal Out-Sourcing Royal Inc. Royal Windsor Cup Final, with Emlor winning that match by half a goal. So Bardon were determined to avoid a repeat of that result and so led throughout this match. James McCarthy’s Emlor struggled to find their form in the first three chukkas and were trailing 6-2½ at half-time. In contrast, Bardon were focused from the first throw-in, even though this match had been delayed to allow Adolfo Cambiaso Junior and Isidro Strada time to travel to the Club after a Scone Polo Gold Cup quarter-final at Cowdray Park earlier in the day. Ignacio Negri was particularly impressive for Bardon and was subsequently rewarded with the Most Valuable Player Award. Emlor got themselves back into this game in the fourth chukka, with Richard Tyrone successfully converting two penalties to nothing in reply from Bardon. So it was very much “game on” going into the fifth chukka. Emlor’s Pedro Harrison did an excellent job in defence – Bardon did not score at all in the final two chukkas – and with Tyrone successfully converting a 30-yard penalty with four minutes left to play there was all to play for. Both teams responded with some fast, up-and-down play which was a delight to watch but neither side could convert these runs into goals. So, on the final whistle, it was Andras Tombor and Bardon who lifted the mighty Indian Empire Shield. Cambiaso Junior received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize for Open Calloway, who is owned by Bardon’s Polo Manager Matias Machado and whom Cambiaso 130

had played in the second chukka. Eleven teams had entered this high-goal contest, delivering 21 games over the previous 20 days. So it was no surprise that the sub-final was equally competitive. Honours in this game, played at Coworth Park earlier in the day, went to Noor Khadra’s Green Gates. This team were 5-3 down at half-time to Guy Schwarzenbach’s Black Bears but rallied strongly in the second half. Green Gates fired through four goals in the fifth chukka, most coming off the stick of Diego Cavanagh, to win the equally impressive sub final trophy 8-7. ✸ TEAMS

h e i n - fo r m G re e n G a te s te a m confirmed that they are a force to be reckoned with when winning the Duke of Cornwall Trophy. Noor Khadra’s team came out best in a tough and tight match against the equally formidable Bardon team to win this 16-goal contest. Green Gates had already secured the Mountbatten Trophy and just a couple of weeks later Noor’s team finished their season on a high by winning the Autumn Nations Trophy – a nice haul of Club silverware. Noor will also remember the 2021 season as this was the year in which he had his first taste of the 22-goal, when deputising for Scone Polo patron David Paradice in the Cartier Queen’s Cup.

Cesar Crespo, Green Gates’ number two, was named the Most Valuable Player, while Bardon’s Matias Machado collected the Best Playing Pony prize for Open Callaway. Just a month earlier this pony had received the Indian Empire Best Playing Pony prize when playing with another rising star of the game, Adolfo Cambiaso Jnr. pencer McCarthy’s Emlor team first highlighted their dominance in the 15-goal tournaments at Smith’s Lawn in 2021 by retaining the La Martina Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s Centenary Trophy. Spencer’s team then went on to win the Royal Windsor Cup, the UK’s leading 15-goal tournament just a month later. In this La Martina final Emlor had to work hard for the win, battling both a competitive Black Bears squad, patroned by Guy Schwarzenbach, and torrential rain. It was closely fought, Emlor coming out best 5-4. The win also ensured Spencer’s team could claim the double as Emlor had won the trophy in 2019 and the tournament was not played for in 2020 due to the pandemic. Emlor had dug deep to win this match, with Spencer on great form throughout the four chukkas. eiko Voelker’s Tchogan claimed the first tournament victory of the 2021 season. They narrowly beat Ana Escobedo’s Ojo Caliente 7-6 in a competitive, 12-goal game to win the Valerie Halford Memorial Trophy. Played at Coworth Park, this final had been delayed by 24 hours due to heavy rain but the rearranged fixture, on the Sunday lunchtime, delivered plenty of fast-paced polo. Tchogan’s Tom Brodie received the Most Valuable Player prize while John Paul Clarkin, captain of the Ojo Caliente team, received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize for Centrical. 140

The sub final, which had been played on the Saturday saw a victory for Simon Arber’s Four Quarters Orange. They beat Bruno Bensoussan’s La Berta Polo Team 7-4. live Reid’s AFB polo team started their 2021 campaign on a winning note by capturing the Committee Cup. This experienced Club team defeated Alan Fall and Stefan Sund’s Mad Dogs/ Previse 5-4 in a tight final on The Queen’s Ground. Although with 13 teams taking part in this eight-goal tournament – often played as a warm-up for the ultra-competitive Hildon Archie David Cup, just reaching the final was an achievement. AFB’s Chino Leiva was named Most Valuable Player while the opposition’s Pedro Harrison received the Best Playing Pony prize for Zeus. The sub final was equally close. Luca Natella’s La Magnolia, a new team to Guards Polo Club in 2021, came out best in this contest, defeating Vivek Rawal and Nick Beitner’s Tashan Power 7-6. ✸

hite Crane put up a powerful performance to add their name to one of the most unusual trophies played for at Guards Polo Club each season. Alexie Calvert-Ansari’s team won the mighty Coworth Park Challenge Trophy on the penultimate day of May, defeating James McCarthy’s Emlor Black 6-5. Played on the fabulous grounds at Coworth Park in warm sunshine, this fast-paced 15-goal competition always delivers great polo and the 2021 competition did not disappoint. Juan Gris Zavaleta, White Crane’s number four, received the Images of Polo Best Playing Pony prize for Penal Cruzada, although all the players received lovely gifts from Zoe Jenkins, the General Manager at Coworth Park. Also home to the Guards Polo Academy, Coworth Park is the country house hotel of the Dorchester Collection group of hotels. Eight strong teams had entered this 15-goal contest and the sub final was equally tight. Four Quarters, winners of the main title in 2020, took the subsidiary final this time around. Like the main trophy winners, they also won on a 6-5 scoreline, beating Noor Khadra’s Green Gates. ✸

ames McCarthy’s Emlor Black overcame a competitive Mad Dogs team to win the Phoenician Cup for the first time. Emlor Black won this thrilling 12-goal final 6-5 thanks to a golden goal. Alan Fall’s team put up a strong fight, forcing this spirited match into extra time. Emlor Black’s Terence Lent was named the Most Valuable Player, while Mad Dogs’ Charlie Hanbury received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize for Lovelocks Cubic. This home-bred pony is by Open Nueva York out of Metrical. All the prizes were presented by Jeannie Holmes, a long-standing friend of the Arida family. The tournament had been played in memory of its founder, Eddy Arida, who died earlier in the year. Eddy created the Phoenician Tournament 146

Guards Polo Club had hoped to make finals day a celebration of Eddy’s life but the ongoing restrictions due to the pandemic meant that the Arida family could not travel to the UK. The sub final was played later in the season and saw victory for Ana Escobedo’s Ojo Caliente. They beat Andrew Dechet’s Ainsley Saddlery 8-3. ✸ TEAMS

he Social Cup is unique among the roster of tournaments at Guards Polo Club – it is sponsored by the Social Members. The Club has an extensive, non-playing membership and this tournament enables this sector of our membership to get closer to the game and the players. There are also rewards for financially supporting the Social Cup – a bespoke Champagne Afternoon Tea in the Royal Box on finals day for our generous tournament benefactors and their guests. So if you cannot actually be on the field of play then there is nowhere better to watch a game than from our iconic Royal Box with a glass of Laurent-Perrier in hand.

This year’s final did not disappoint either. Honours went to Andrew Dechet and Max Sponer’s Kildare/Amos team. They defeated Heiko Voelker’s Tchogan (rec ½ goal on handicap) in a close game across four chukkas on The Queen’s Ground. Max had a particularly strong game and was rewarded with the Most Valuable Player prize. His team-mate Manuel Plaza took home the Images of Polo Best Playing Pony prize for Laucha. Win or lose though, all the players were then invited to the Royal Box to join the Social Cup sponsors for tea. There were two further games on finals day. Jayne Rumsey and Oliver Heard’s Carisbrooke/ Home Farm won the sub final 7-4½. Their opponents, Harum Scarum/The Wall Design received ½ a goal on handicap and did kick off the scoring but were trailing 6-3½ at the end of the third and could not close the gap. The last game of the day was a win for Alan Fall and Olympia Paus’ Mad Dogs / Quixote squad. Melanie Hare was playing in place of Olympia but this change of line up did not affect the team and Mad Dogs/ Quixote defeated Stefan Sund’s Previse, (rec ½ a goal on handicap) 6-3½ on the Club’s newest ground, the Princes’ Ground. *If you are interested in being a Social Cup sponsor in 2022, please contact Vanessa Cumming in our Membership Team by emailing vanessa.cumming@guardspoloclub.com ✸ TEAMS

ing Power snatched a 9-8 win over Noor Khadra’s Green Gates to win the Duke of Wellington Trophy. This 12-goal final was a tight game, with the advantage swapping regularly between both sides. Green Gates had a 4-2 advantage at the end of the second and looked in control of the game, Gonzalo Ferrari and Cesar Crespo delivering a strong partnership to put Khadra’s team ahead. The pressure started to show in the third though. King Power successfully converted four penalties and with Marcus Cork firing through a fabulous goal just before the bell King Power now had the advantage, 7-6. Both of Green Gates’ goals in this chukka had come from penalties too. With all to play for, Ferrari started the fourth with a field goal to level the scores and a subsequent Green Gates penalty put them ahead once more. However with two Green Gates penalties going wide in this chukka King Power 150

were still in contention. Jeronimo del Carril, who was later named The Most Valuable Player, made the most of this by first levelling the scores and then firing through the winner from the subsequent line-out with only seconds left on the clock. Pili Pichimahuida, who had been played by Marcus Cork in the second half of this match, received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize. With 14 teams entering the 2021 tournament, the sub final matches were no less competitive. Honours here went to Ojo Caliente, who beat Polo Performance 8-7. The sub sub final for the Smith’s Lawn Bowl saw a win for Asian Art. They beat Emlor 8-7.5. ✸ TEAMS

ellington College confirmed that they are the stand-out schools team after retaining the Copenhagen Cup in mid-September. They beat Stowe School (rec 2½ goals on handicap) 9-6½ in a fast-paced game on one of the Club’s top grounds. Incredibly, five of the eight players in this final were already playing members of Guards Polo Club and so were very familiar with the high standard of polo field. Such experienced players also highlighted the impressive standard of schools’ polo today. In fact two players in this final, Wellington’s Louis Hine and Stowe’s Noor Khadra found themselves in action later that same day, playing in Noor’s winning Green Gates team in the final of the 12-goal Autumn 152

Louis had also received this honour when Wellington had won two years ago. Meanwhile Stowe’s Rafi Mahmood returned to school with the La Martina Sportsmanship Award, while his team-mate Noor received the Best Playing Pony prize for his own Cereza. This two-day tournament had not been played in 2020 as the schools had been closed due to the pandemic and so all the teams were delighted to have the opportunity to play at Guards Polo Club once again. The sub final featured Rugby School versus Radley College (rec 1 goal). The higher-handicapped Rugby School won this contest 7-5, retaining the trophy they last won in 2019. ✸ TEAMS

reen Gates concluded a successful 2021 season by retaining the Autumn Nations Trophy. Noor Khadra’s team came to this final having already won the 16-goal Duke of Cornwall Trophy and the 15-goal Mountbatten Cup but they had to work hard to win this prize. Romilla Arber’s Four Quarters Black delivered a tough opposition and the match was tighter than the final 6-4 scoreline implied. Romilla herself kickstarted Four Quarters Black’s tally on the scoreboard by delivering a fabulous run to goal in the second when her team were 3-0 down. The key to Green Gates’ success in this 12-goal final was their team-work. Isidro Strada, who was later named the Most Valuable Player, created a strong partnership with Cesar Crespo but every player contributed to this win. Louis Hine, who earlier in the day had won the schools’ Copenhagen Cup with Wellington College – ironically playing against Noor, a member of the Stowe school team – was strong in defence, producing some great ride-offs against Felix

Esain and Benjamin Urquiza. Although Green Gates were ahead for all of the match they could not relax for a moment. Four Quarters Black never gave up fighting, with Emanuel Arber, Esain and Urquiza continually trying to find their way to goal. The result for the spectators was a wonderful, fast and flowing game that was a treat to watch. Brian Stein, Chairman of Guards Polo Club, presented the prizes. This included the Polo Times Best Playing Pony to Strada’s eightyear-old Guadalupe Sandy Lane. Eighteen teams had entered this year’s tournament, ensuring just reaching the final was an achievement. It also meant that the sub final was equally competitive. Victory went to Tashan Polo. They beat Sona Polo 6-5 in another close game played earlier in the day. ✸ TEAMS

unde Karim’s Shoreline team closed the 2021 season at Guards Polo Club with a victory in the President’s Trophy. The final of this 10-goal tournament was the last game of the season and so there was plenty of pressure on all the players to deliver a stand-out game. Although Shoreline won this match 5-1, their opponents, Olympia Paus’s Quixote, delivered a much tougher opposition than the final score implied. Quixote was fielding the sibling duo Nina Vestey and Tamara Fox, and it was great to see three lady players in action in a competitive Club final. Both teams delivered lovely, end-to-end polo, making the spectators sad that this really was the last day of the season. Shoreline’s Adabayo Karim, Tunde’s talented young nephew, was named the Most Valuable Player. Meanwhile his team-mate Santiago de Estrada received the Images of Polo Best Playing Pony prize for Bruja from the Club’s Chairman Brian Stein. The earlier sub final was a win for Alan Fall and Heiko Voelker’s Tchogan Dogs squad.
