Μέσα στην ένταση των ημερών, ο κάθε άνθρωπος αμύνεται με τον δικό του τρόπο και οι διέξοδοι δεν μπορεί παρά να αναζητούνται σε χώρους και πεδία με ουσία, δημιουργικότητα και ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον. Το σύμπαν που μας περιβάλλει, κρύβει μυστικά, πλανήτες ανεξερεύνητους και μη, ο ουρανός είναι γεμάτος αστέρια που έχουμε ονοματίσει και παρακολουθούμε για πολλούς και διαφορετικούς λόγους. Το τεύχος μας φιλοξενεί αφιέρωμα στο Εθνικό Αστεροσκοπείο Αθηνών, τον μαγευτικό χώρο που μπορεί κανείς να επισκεφθεί και να ταξιδέψει μακριά, ονειρικά. Αντιστοίχως, η ανθρώπινη ευφυΐα και αντίληψη, μα και οι σωματικές δυνατότητες και ικανότητες, δεν αφήνουν κανέναν αδιάφορο. Η έκθεση του Ιδρύματος Β & Μ Θεοχαράκη διερευνά τη συνάντηση δύο τεράστιων προσωπικοτήτων των γραμμάτων και των τεχνών: o Pablo Picasso και o Jean Cocteau αποδεικνύουν πως η ιδιοφυία θα βρει τρόπο να εκφραστεί με οποιαδήποτε μορφή. Την ίδια ώρα, οι υπερταλαντούχοι χορευτές της Λυρικής Σκηνής ξεπερνούν τα ανθρώπινα όρια και «ίπτανται», με τον δικό τους τρόπο, προσφέροντας μοναδικό θέαμα. Ο κόπος και ο πόνος δεν τους αποτρέπουν -θα συνεχίσουν με το ίδιο πάθος. Όρια, όμως, δεν γνωρίζει ούτε η τέχνη. Η αεικίνητη Αφροδίτη Παναγιωτάκου, εκτελεστική διευθύντρια της Στέγης Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών, συνομιλεί με τον νέο και χαρισματικό σκηνοθέτη Δημήτρη Καραντζά, για άμεσα σχέδια, αλλά και την περίπλοκη υπόθεση του πολιτισμού στην εποχή μας και την πόλη μας. Η Αθηνά Ραχήλ Τσαγγάρη, που βραβεύτηκε ήδη για την ταινία “Chevalier” στο Λονδίνο, μας ταξιδεύει στα projects της με πανεπιστήμια της Αμερικής και ο Σάιμον Κασσιανίδης, που γνωρίζει καλά τι εστί Χόλιγουντ, αφού εκεί ζει και εργάζεται, μιλά κυρίως για ό,τι νοσταλγεί από τη γενέτειρά του, Ελλάδα. Η Αθήνα, εν τω μεταξύ, αποδεικνύει πως ξέρει να ανανεώνεται, διατηρώντας όμως και την παλιά της αίγλη και τις κλασσικές αξίες: χώροι και άνθρωποι της μόδας προσφέρουν sur mesure δημιουργίες, με σύγχρονο πνεύμα, αλλά και σεβασμό στις αρχές της τέχνης τους.

The world, the international stage, is going through a crucial period, perhaps an unprecedented one. In these stressful times, we all rely on our defence mechanisms, naturally seeking outlets with substance, creativity and of special interest. The universe surrounding us has many secrets to reveal, including charted and undiscovered planets, and a sky full of stars to which we have given names and observe for a variety of reasons. This issue features a tribute to the National Observatory of Athens, a magical gateway to far away dream worlds. Human intelligence, perception, as well as physical capacity and capability remain paramount. The B & M Theocharakis Foundation is hosting an exhibition that explores the meeting of two great personalities in art and literature: Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau, who prove that genius will find a way to express itself, regardless of the form. Moreover, the highly talented dancers of the National Opera transcend human limitations and “become airborne”, offering a unique spectacle. Undaunted by hard work and pain -they, in turn, will carry on with the same passion. Art recognises no limits. Afroditi Panagiotakou, the perpetually active Deputy General Manager of the Onassis Cultural Centre, and the young and charismatic director Dimitris Karantzas, discuss their upcoming plans and the complexities of culture in Athens during this challenging time. Athina Rachel Tsangari, whose film “Chevalier” has already received awards in London, opens up about her projects with universities in America, and Simon Kassianides, who lives and works in Hollywood, speaks nostalgically about his homeland, Greece. Athens proves that it understands the importance of renewal, while continuing to maintain its former glory and classical values: the places and people of fashion present tailor made creations, with a contemporary spirit and a respect for the principles of their art.

ε τον στοχασμό του Pablo Picasso στην ψυχή και στο μυαλό σας, «Θέλησα, με το χρώμα και το σχέδιο, αφού αυτά είναι τα όπλα μου, να προχωρήσω όλο και πιο πολύ στη γνώση του κόσμου και των ανθρώπων, γιατί τούτη η γνώση μάς ελευθερώνει, κάθε μέρα και περισσότερο», μπορείτε να δείτε τη θεματική έκθεση «Pablo Picasso - Jean Cocteau: Οι καινοτόμοι του Μοντερνισμού. Μέσα από το αιρετικό τους πνεύμα αποκαλύπτεται η αυθεντικότητα και η ιδιοφυΐα τους. Ο Picasso, γεννημένος στη Mάλαγα της Ανδαλουσίας το 1881 και ο Cocteau στο Μεζόν-Λαφίτ, ένα χωριουδάκι έξω από το Παρίσι, οκτώ χρόνια αργότερα, το 1889, κατάφεραν να οδηγήσουν τη σκέψη και τη δράση τους πέρα από τα όρια του τόπου τους, προσδίδοντας οικουμενικότητα στην τέχνη τους. The thematic exhibition “Pablo Picasso - Jean Cocteau: Innovators of Modernism, Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso Münster & Ioannis Kontaxopoulos Collection”, presented by the B & M Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Art and Music, is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the words of Pablo Picasso: “Using line and colour, since these were my weapons, I have always tried to penetrate deeper and deeper into an understanding of the world so that this understanding might liberate us more each day.” The exhibited works by Picasso and Cocteau are on loan from the Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso Münster and the Ioannis Kontaxopoulos collection respectively. The deep and abiding friendship of the two great innovators of modernism, whose ingenious work made its mark on European culture and earned a prominent position in the history of art, was defined by the power of contrapuntal inspiration and narrative. Their diverse body of work, in painting, sculpture, ceramics, scenography and the written word, dynamically encompasses the rational and irrational, contrasts and conflicts, as well as the subversive relationships with life and the search for the absolute. Their authenticity and genius is revealed through their heretical spirit. Picasso was born in Malaga, Andalusia in 1881, while Cocteau was born in Maisons-Laffitte, a small village near Paris, eight years later in 1889. Nevertheless both artists succeeded in driving their thoughts and activities beyond the boundaries of their homeland, lending universality to their art. Their oeuvre, and its deep and insightful truths, has a complex relationship with ar t, as their genius played a key role in the establishment of modernism. The influence of Ancient Greek spirit is a common element in their oeuvre. Picasso said, “If all the ways I have been along

Ο Picasso, εξάλλου, υποστήριζε: «Αν κάποιος σημείωνε πάνω σε έναν χάρτη όλες τις διαδρομές που διήνυσα και τις ένωνε μεταξύ τους με μία γραμμή, θα σχεδίαζε ενδεχομένως έναν μινώταυρο». Ο Cocteau και ο Picasso με το έργο τους υπερασπίζονται την ελευθερία του έρωτα, την αντισυμβατική ζωή και την απελευθέρωση της σκέψης. Η αισθητική του μοντερνισμού ήταν η αισθητική της ανανέωσης και της αναζωογόνησης, δηλαδή της επιστροφής στους αρχαίους μύθους και στην ιστορία του πολιτισμού. Η συνύπαρξη και η αντιπαραβολή του έργου τους στη θεματική αυτή έκθεση απαιτεί μία προσεκτική ανάγνωση, καθώς η δραστηριότητα των δύο δημιουργών επεκτείνεται διερευνητικά, τολμηρά και αποφασιστικά στον πλαστικό ρυθμό της ζωγραφικής τους έκφρασης. Η παράλληλη ενασχόλησή τους με διαφορετικές μορφές τέχνης, όπως το θέατρο και η λογοτεχνία, μεταξύ άλλων, καταδεικνύει την ευρύτητα της σκέψης τους απέναντι σε κάθε νέα πρόκληση. Θα πρέπει επίσης να αναφερθεί ότι σημαντικό ρόλο στην καλλιτεχνική πορεία των δύο δημιουργών έπαιξε η θεωρία της ψυχανάλυσης και γενικότερα, οι θέσεις και οι απόψεις του Freud για την τέχνη. Η πενηντάχρονη φιλία των δύο δημιουργών σφραγίζεται από καλλιτεχνικές συνέργειες και δυνατούς δεσμούς όπως στον πρώτο γάμο του Picasso με τη χορεύτρια των ρωσικών μπαλέτων Olga Khokhlova, που ο ζωγράφος επέλεξε τους φίλους του Cocteau, Jacob και Apollinaire, για κουμπάρους του στη ρωσική εκκλησία του Παρισιού, το 1918. Ο Cocteau θαύμαζε τον Picasso και έγραψε σπουδαία αισθητικά δοκίμια για τη ζωγραφική του. Αναφερόμενος στην πολύχρονη συνεργασία τους, γράφει: «Είναι ο μοναδικός που χρησιμοποιεί την ιδιοφυΐα ως ευφυΐα... Είναι η σημαντικότερή μου γνωριμία. Ο Picasso μού δίδαξε να τρέχω πιο γρήγορα από την ομορφιά… Εκείνος που τρέχει πιο γρήγορα από την ομορφιά θα κάνει ένα έργο που θα μοιάζει άσχημο...». Ο Picasso αναφερόμενος στον Cocteau δηλώνει: «Ο Cocteau είναι μία σπίθα στην ουρά του κομήτη. Εγώ είμαι ο κομήτης». Ενώ σε μία συνέντευξή του το 1927, που έγινε αιτία να ψυχραθούν και να απομακρυνθεί ο ένας από τον άλλο, είπε: «Ο Cocteau είναι μία μηχανή που σκέφτεται. Τα σχέδιά του είναι πολύ χαριτωμένα, τα λογοτεχνικά έργα του πολύ δημοσιογραφικά. Εάν μπορούσε κανείς να φτιάξει εφημερίδες για διανοούμενους, ο Cocteau θα σέρβιρε κάθε μέρα ένα καινούργιο πιάτο, μία κομψή πιρουέτα. Εάν κατάφερνε να πουλήσει το ταλέντο του, θα μπορούσαμε να πηγαίνουμε στο φαρμακείο, όλη μας τη ζωή, και να αγοράζουμε ένα χάπι Cocteau, χωρίς να καταφέρουμε να εξαντλήσουμε το ταλέντο του». Η πορεία τους στην τέχνη, ανάμεσα σε πάθη και αναζητήσεις, είχε ως κατάληξη την εδραίωση της νέας αισθητικής έκφρασης του Picasso, κατατάσσοντάς τον ανάμεσα στους κορυφαίους δημιουργούς του 20ού αιώνα και τη διεθνή αποδοχή του ποιητικού-λογοτεχνικού λόγου του Cocteau, ο οποίος το 1955 έγινε μέλος της Γαλλικής και της Βελγικής Ακαδημίας, ενώ δύο χρόνια αργότερα, επίτιμος διδάκτορας του Πανεπιστημίου της Οξφόρδης. Πολύτροποι και αισθαντικοί, αγάπησαν την απόλυτη αλήθεια, το αναλλοίωτο και το αιώνιο. Έτσι, το έργο τους ανήκει στο αύριο, καθώς θα συνεχίζει να γοητεύει και να διδάσκει τις μελλοντικές γενιές. were marked on a map and joined up with a line, it might represent a minotaur.” Cocteau and Picasso defended freedom of love, unconventional life and liberation of thought through their oeuvre. The aesthetics of modernism was the aesthetics of renewal and rejuvenation, that is, the return to ancient myths and the history of culture. The coexistence and contrast of their oeuvres included in this thematic exhibition, demands close attention, as the activity of both artists extends in a probing, bold and decisive manner to the “plastic” rhythm of their painting expression. The parallel involvement with a variety of art forms, including theatre and literature among others, demonstrates the breadth of their thought in the face of each new challenge. It is also worth noting that the theory of psychoanalysis and the views and positions of Freud with respect to art also played an important role in the artistic path of both Cocteau and Picasso. Their friendship, which spanned fifty years, was characterised by artistic synergies and strong personal connections. In 1918, Picasso chose Jacob and Apollinaire, who were close friends of Cocteau, to stand as witnesses at his first wedding to the Russian ballerina Olga Khokhlova at the Russian church in Paris. Cocteau admired Picasso and wrote important aesthetic essays on his art. With regard to their long collaboration, he wrote, “He is singular in that he uses genius as intelligence… He is my most important acquaintance. Picasso taught me to run faster than beauty… He who runs faster than beauty, his work will seem ugly…” Picasso said, “Cocteau is a spark in the comet’s tail. I am the comet.” In an interview in 1927, which led to the two men eventually moving away from each other, he said, “Cocteau is a machine that thinks. His drawings are charming and his literary work is very journalistic. If one could create a newspaper for intellectuals, Cocteau would serve up a new dish each day, an elegant pirouette. If he managed to bottle his talent, we could go to a pharmacy and buy a Cocteau pill, without ever exhausting his talent.” Their art journey, through passions and pursuits, resulted in a new aesthetic expression for Picasso, who was ranked among the leading artists of the 20th century, and international acceptance for the poeticliterary discourse of Cocteau, who became a member of the French and Belgium Academy in 1955 and received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University two years later. ΑΠΟ ΤΟΝ ΓΙΩΡΓΟ ΡΙΖΟΠΟΥΛΟ Art can be found all around Athens. The Hilton Athens magazine will be featuring an outdoor art installation in each upcoming issue. Χρύσα -για τους Έλληνες-, ή Chryssa Vardea -για τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο- απέδειξε με τη ζωή της ότι η δήλωσή της αυτή ήταν κάτι παραπάνω από έναν απλό ισχυρισμό. Έφυγε από τη ζωή πριν από δύο χρόνια, αφήνοντας κληρονομιά τα έργα της στα σπουδαιότερα μουσεία του κόσμου. Πώς αλλιώς θα μπορούσε να φανταστεί κάποιος την πορεία μίας καλλιτέχνιδος που στα 28 της χρόνια έκανε ατομική έκθεση στο Guggenheim Museum της Νέας Υόρκης! Η Times Square στο Μανχάταν αποτελεί πηγή έμπνευσης για τη νεαρή Ελληνίδα, η οποία δεν φοβάται να προκαλέσει, συνδέοντάς την με τη Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία, και να αποδώσει την πολυπολιτισμικότητα με plexiglass, ανοξείδωτα, πλαστικά και φωτισμούς νέον! Καρπός της καλλιτεχνικής της ενασχόλησης με το νέον και των επιρροών της από τις εικόνες της πρωτεύουσας του κόσμου αποτελεί και το έργο τέχνης που κοσμεί τον υπόγειο σταθμό του μετρό στον Ευαγγελισμό. Η πρώτη επαφή με το έργο τέχνης, για τους περαστικούς, πιθανότατα δεν αρκεί για να γοητεύσει. Όσοι μάλιστα δεν έχουν επαφή με το έργο της και τη ζωή της, εύκολα μπορούν να μιλήσουν για ένα «φωτισμένο καφέ πλαστικό». Έφτασα στον Ευαγγελισμό και στάθηκα μπροστά στο έργο της Χρύσας με ένα μειδίαμα ικανοποίησης. Χωρίς να το επιδιώξω, αναπαράχθηκαν στο μυαλό μου πληροφορίες και εικόνες. Νομίζω ότι η καλλιτέχνις κατάφερε να μετουσιώσει αυτά τα φτηνά υλικά σε ένα ταξίδι στον μυστηριώδη και άγνωστο κόσμο της Chinatown. Η έκθεσή του κάτω από το υπέργειο, ήρεμο και περιποιημένο πάρκο του Ριζάρη αποτελεί μία ενδιαφέρουσα αντίθεση.
Chryssa Vardea, known as just Chryssa to the Greeks, spent her life proving that the above statement was much more than a simple assertion. She passed away two years ago, leaving a legacy of works that are on display in the most important museums of the world. There is no other way to imagine the path of an artist that had a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum of New York at the age of 28! Times Square in Manhattan was a constant source of inspiration for the young Greek artist, who never hesitated to challenge and found a way to connect the iconic square to the Byzantine Empire, establishing the multiculturalism through plexiglass, stainless steel, plastic and neon lights! The work of art adorning the Evangelismos Metro Station is the fruit of her artistic engagement with neon as well as the influences of the images from the city that is often considered the capital of the world. At first glance, the work of art may not succeed in enchanting passers-by. Those not familiar with her work or life could easily speak of “a brown piece of illuminated plastic”. I arrived at Evangelismos and stood in front of Chyssa’s work with a satisfied smile on my face. My mind was full of information and images without any additional effort on my part. I believe that the artist managed to translate these cheap materials into a journey to the depths of the mysterious and unknown world of Chinatown. Εxhibiting it beneath the calm and well-tended Rizari Park is an interesting contrast. Info: Chryssa's piece "Sirene" (1998) is located outside the Terpsichore Room at the Hilton Athens.

πήκα τρέχοντας και μουσκεμένος στο κτήριο της Εθνικής Λυρικής Σκηνής, που στεγάζει, όχι μόνο τη σχολή του μπαλέτου, αλλά και την καθημερινή προετοιμασία των επαγγελματιών χορευτών. Είχα φτάσει στο ραντεβού μία ώρα νωρίτερα, την ώρα που αρχίζουν να εμφανίζονται οι χορευτές για το ατομικό τους ζέσταμα! Δύο μεγάλες διπλανές αίθουσες γεμάτες παράθυρα, περιμετρικές μπάρες και καθρέφτες, υποδέχονται κάθε μέρα τους χορευτές, οι οποίοι, με φόρμες, γκέτες, μάλλινες κάλτσες και ισοθερμικές μπότες, επιλεγμένες ώστε να κρατούν το σώμα και τα πόδια τους ζεστά, καταλαμβάνουν το δάπεδο των αιθουσών και προετοιμάζουν τους μυς προκειμένου να αποφευχθούν μοιραίοι τραυματισμοί. Ο πόλεμος με τις απλές, καθημερινές κινήσεις ενός συνηθισμένου ανθρώπου αρχίζει. Plié, battement tendu, battement jeté, rond de jambe, fondu. Είναι απορίας άξιο πώς μπορείς να κάνεις αυτές τις κινήσεις για να μην πιαστείς! Και αυτό είναι μόνο η πρώτη μίας σειράς αντιθέσεων που διαπίστωσα. Αμέσως επόμενη, εντυπωσιακή αντίθεση αποτελεί το γεγονός ότι οι χορευτές, κατά τη διαδικασία του ζεστάματος, αυτοσυγκεντρώνονται και προετοιμάζονται σε άμεση επαφή με τo δάπεδο, απορροφώντας ενέργεια από το έδαφος ενώ, κατά τη διάρκεια της πρόβας ή της παράστασης, ίπτανται σαν αερικά αναμετρούμενοι με τον αέρα. Μακριά από τα αδηφάγα μάτια των θεατών, οι κινήσεις της προετοιμασίας είναι σχεδόν τελετουργικές και διαπιστώνεις ότι οι φαινομενικά άτρωτοι επί σκηνής καλλιτέχνες, στις προσωπικές αυτές στιγμές, δείχνουν ευάλωτοι και εκτεθειμένοι, ενώ μοιάζουν να προσεύχονται ώστε να αποκτήσουν την απαραίτητη ψυχική ενδυνάμωση που απαιτεί ο κάθε ρόλος. οι πιανιστεσ Ξαφνικά, όλο το σκηνικό αλλάζει. Στον χώρο εισβάλλουν οι δάσκαλοι -η Irina και ο Sasha- και σε λίγα δευτερόλεπτα, τα πάντα ζωντανεύουν. Οι δύο αίθουσες γεμίζουν ενέργεια, μουρμουρητά και ελαφρά γελάκια, ενώ ταυτόχρονα και υπό την ισορροπημένα γλυκιά, αλλά και αυστηρή φωνή των δασκάλων, οι κορυφαίοι χορευτές κλασικού μπαλέτου στη χώρα, γίνονται μαθητές που υπακούν υποδειγματικά. Οι άντρες, σε χωριστή αίθουσα από τις γυναίκες, μοιράζονται στον χώρο και η μαγεία ξεκινάει μόλις οι πιανίστες ξεδιπλώνουν την εμπειρία τους στα πλήκτρα, παίζοντας μουσικές θεσπέσιες, οι οποίες γέμισαν τον χώρο και μεταμόρφωσαν τις Αιμιλίες, τους Ντανίλο, τις Μαρίες, τους Μάικλ, τις Μάγδες και τους Πέτρους σε Ζιζέλ, Ρωμαίους, Σταχτοπούτες, Ζίγκφριντ, Οντέτ, Βασίλισσες του χιονιού και Ρώσους πρίγκιπες. Το αντιολισθητικό δάπεδο πότε μεταμορφωνόταν σε γρασίδι, πότε σε χιόνι και πότε σε πολυτελές μάρμαρο παλατιού, ενώ, διά μαγείας, η συννεφιά από τα παράθυρα έγινε χειμωνιάτικο σκηνικό σε ρωσική στέπα, τα φωτιστικά με τις λάμπες φθορισμού, κρυστάλλινοι πολυέλαιοι σε αίθουσες χορού και τα ρούχα πρόβας, βαρύτιμες στολές.
I was running and soaking wet as I entered the building housing the National Opera, which is both the site of the ballet school and the daily rehearsals of the professional dancers. Running true to form, I had arrived an hour early for my appointment, just as the dancers were beginning to emerge for their personal warm-up! Two large adjacent dance studios, with many windows, barres and mirrors lining the walls, welcome the dancers each day, who wear tracksuits, leg warmers, woollen socks and isothermal boots to keep their bodies and feet warm as they stretch across the floor of the studios, preparing their muscles so as to avoid fatal injuries. The battle against the simple everyday movements of the ordinary man begins. Plié, battement tendu, battement jeté, rond de jambe, fondu. It’s astonishing that these moves are necessary to avoid stiffness! And this was just the first of a series of contradictions I encountered. The second, impressive contrast was the fact that during warm-up, dancers concentrate and prepare while in direct contact with the floor, absorbing energy from the ground, whereas in rehearsal or performance, they fly over it like pixies defying the air. Far from the greedy eyes of the audience, the warm-up movements seem almost ritualistic and you realise that the artists who appear invulnerable on stage, are vulnerable and exposed in these intimate moments and seem to pray for the necessary mental empowerment required by each role. τηε pianists Suddenly, the scene changed. The teachers -Irina and Sasha- entered and in a few seconds everything came alive. The two studios filled with energy, murmurs and giggles, while under the equally sweet and strict voices of the teachers, the top classical dancers in Greece transformed into obedient, exemplary students. The men, in a different studio from the women, spread out and the wizardry began as soon as the pianists touched their experienced fingers to the keys, playing sublime music that filled the space, transfiguring the Emilys, Danilos, Marias, Michaels, Magdas and Peters into Giselles, Romeos, Cinderellas, Seigfrieds, Odettes, Snow Queens and Russian princes. The anti-slip floor metamorphosed into grass, then snow, and the luxurious marble of the palace, and the clouds outside the windows magically melted into a Russian steppe, the fluorescent lights into crystal chandeliers twinkling in ballrooms, and the rehearsal clothes into dress uniforms. The pianists play a key role in this daily game, with the vitality they offer and the offbeat humour with which they address hour upon hour of rehearsal. “I’ve been a pianist at the National Opera for thirty years and Markos is only 29 years old! It’s tragic!” the lively and exuberant Erida says of her young colleague in a Russian accent, and laughs loudly. The young pianist took over the second piano just 10

Κομβικό ρόλο στο καθημερινό αυτό παιχνίδι φαίνεται να παίζουν οι πιανίστες, με τη ζωντάνια που προσφέρουν και με το ιδιότυπο χιούμορ που αντιμετωπίζουν τις πολύωρες πρόβες. «Εγώ είμαι τριάντα χρόνια πιανίστρια στη Λυρική και ο Μάρκος είναι μόνο 29 χρόνων. Είναι τραγικό!», λέει με χαρακτηριστική ρωσική προφορά και γελώντας ηχηρά, η σαρωτική και πληθωρική σε ζωντάνια Έριδα, για τον συνάδελφο, νεαρό πιανίστα, που ανέλαβε τη θέση στο δεύτερο πιάνο, μόλις πριν από δέκα μέρες, και πάλευε με τις φαρμακευτικές αλοιφές για να αντεπεξέλθει στο σύνδρομο καρπιαίου σωλήνα, λόγω των αμέτρητων ωρών μελέτης που χρειάστηκε, ώστε να είναι προετοιμασμένος για τις απαιτήσεις των προβών.

Αυτή τη στιγμή που γράφω, αδυνατώ να θυμηθώ αν αυτά τα υπέροχα σώματα εκτελούσαν τις θαυμάσιες χορευτικές κινήσεις που απαιτούσαν οι δάσκαλοι πατώντας στο δάπεδο. «Τα χίλια σώματα του ανέμου και το ένα του ανθρώπου», λέει ο Ελύτης στην «Ιδιωτική Οδό» κι εγώ, ο άμοιρος, να πασχίζω να μετατρέψω το προνόμιο να απολαμβάνω από απόσταση αναπνοής τα χίλια αυτά ιπτάμενα σώματα, σε κείμενο.
the flying bodies What movement, what grace! Even when they step out of their role and bend down to reach for the inexpensive plastic water bottle from their bag to take a drink, they are so harmonious, so beautiful. The mirror opposite is their most important ally, helping them correct any shortcomings requiring adjustment, as well as their greatest enemy, should they find that they are unable to conquer nature. Because that is what they must do: for those who have not yet clued in, the aim of the dancer is to fight the laws of attrition and nature. You observe them from a distance with awe, believing that dancing is a pleasure and not work, but the reality is much more cruel and painful. They battle the limits and endurance of the human body and are rewarded with fractures, sprains, bone swelling, whiplash, tendonitis, broken nails and bruised toes, with physiotherapists as their only hope, who regularly intervene in order to help them continue fighting this daily battle.
τα ιπτάμενα σωματα Μα, τι κίνηση, τι χάρη! Ακόμη κι όταν απεκδύονται τον ρόλο τους και σκύβουν να πάρουν το ευτελές πλαστικό μπουκάλι από τον σάκο τους για να πιουν νερό είναι τόσο αρμονικοί, τόσο όμορφοι. Απέναντί τους, ο καθρέφτης αποτελεί γι’ αυτούς τον σπουδαιότερο σύμμαχο, προκειμένου να αντιμετωπίζουν τις ατέλειες που πρέπει να διορθώσουν, αλλά και τον μεγαλύτερο εχθρό, όταν διαπιστώνουν ότι δεν μπορούν να υπερβούν τη φύση. Διότι περί αυτού πρόκειται: για όσους δεν το έχουν καταλάβει, ο στόχος των χορευτών είναι να παλέψουν με τους νόμους της φθοράς και της φύσης. Από απόσταση, τους παρατηρείς με δέος, νομίζοντας ότι αυτό που κάνουν είναι ευχαρίστηση και όχι εργασία, αλλά η πραγματικότητα είναι πολύ πιο σκληρή και οδυνηρή. Αντιμάχονται τα όρια του ανθρώπινου σώματος και τις αντοχές του και αμείβονται, εισπράττοντας θλάσεις, διαστρέμματα, οστικά οιδήματα, αυχενικά, τενοντίτιδες, σπασμένα νύχια και ταλαιπωρημένα δάχτυλα, με μόνη απαντοχή τούς φυσικοθεραπευτές, που επεμβαίνουν ανελλιπώς, προκειμένου να τους βοηθήσουν να συνεχίσουν τον καθημερινό αυτό αγώνα. Και πέραν του μόνιμου σωματικού πόνου, καλούνται ως ερμηνευτές να υποστούν την απαιτούμενη ελεύθερη πτώση στο άβατο της δυσπρόσιτης ψυχοτεχνικής μεθόδου, που οφείλουν να διαθέτουν οι ιδιοφυείς καλλιτέχνες, προκειμένου να ερμηνεύουν τους ρόλους τους κινούμενοι με φυσικότητα στην περιοχή του υποσυνείδητου, χωρίς όμως παράλληλα, να αυτοεξοντώνονται. Παρά την πίεση του επαγγέλματος και τις υψηλές απαιτήσεις των χορογραφιών της Εθνικής Λυρικής Σκηνής, ανθίστανται στη δραπέτευση από την άνιση σύγκρουση με τη φύση, πιθανότατα γιατί γνωρίζουν ότι η μόνη ασφαλής διαφυγή είναι η ίδια τους η τέχνη. Εξάλλου, όπως ισχυρίζεται και ο νομπελίστας Περουβιανός συγγραφέας Μάριο Βάργκας Λιόσα, «η τέχνη είναι μία ευγενής υπέρβαση των ορίων» -κι αυτό φαίνεται να το γνωρίζουν καλύτερα από όλους μας οι χορευτές αυτοί. Έχει ήδη αρχίσει ο ιδρώτας να στάζει και η τέχνη σιγά σιγά μπερδεύεται με τον αισθησιασμό των τέλειων σωμάτων τους, ενώ τις χορευτικές κινήσεις επενδύουν μουσικά ετερόκλητα ακούσματα από την «Πορνογραφία» του Χατζιδάκι και το “Hit the Road Jack” του Ray Charles, έως το “La foule” της Edith Piaf και τη «Λίμνη των Κύκνων».

As I write this article, I find myself unable to remember if those wonderful bodies were performing the incredible dance moves demanded by the teachers with their feet on the floor. “The thousand bodies of the wind and the one of man,” wrote Elytis in “The Private Road”, and I haplessly endeavour to effectively transfer the privilege of being in such close proximity to these thousand flying bodies onto paper.
And in addition to the permanent pain, as performers they are called on to undergo the required free-fall into the sanctum sanctorum of the inaccessible psycho-technical method, which is a must for ingenious artists who wish to interpret their roles, moving naturally into the subconscious while also ensuring they do not self-annihilate. Despite the pressure of the profession and the high demands of the choreography of the National Opera, they nonetheless resist the urge to escape from the unequal struggle with nature, perhaps because they are well aware that the only safe escape is through their art itself. According to the Peruvian Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, “art gently pushes the boundaries,” and no one understands this better than these dancers. Sweat has already started dripping and the art gradually becomes entangled with the sensuality of their perfect bodies, while the dance moves invest in the musically disparate sounds, from “Pornography” by Hadjidakis and Ray Charles’ “Hit the Road Jack”, to “La Foule” by Edith Piaf and “Swan Lake”. τηε backstage As soon as the signal was given for a short break, photographer Apostolos and I slipped out to explore the building, which had seemed uninteresting until we caught sight of some dancers descending into the basement and we unabashedly followed them. And if we had imagined that we had thus far experienced a fairy tale preparation for a performance, on our descent into the basement we dove into the backstage aspect of the story. Princely costumes, velvet vests, luxurious dresses, petticoats and countless other costumes were neat-

tα παρασκηνια Μόλις δόθηκε σήμα για ένα ολιγόλεπτο διάλειμμα, δραπετεύσαμε με τον φωτογράφο μας Απόστολο και εξερευνήσαμε το κτήριο, το οποίο έδειχνε να μην έχει κάποιο ενδιαφέρον, έως ότου προσέξαμε κάποιους χορευτές να κατεβαίνουν στο υπόγειο και εννοείται ότι τους ακολουθήσαμε πάραυτα. Κι αν έως τότε φανταζόμαστε ότι ζούσαμε στην παραμυθένια προετοιμασία μίας παράστασης, με την κάθοδο στα υπόγεια, βουτήξαμε στο backstage του παραμυθιού. Πριγκιπικές στολές, βελούδινα γιλέκα, πολυτελή φορέματα, μεσοφόρια εποχής και αμέτρητα ακόμη κοστούμια, τακτοποιημένα σε ιματιοθήκες και stands βεστιαρίου, ενώ περιμετρικά ράφια από την οροφή έως το δάπεδο φιλοξενούσαν σπαθιά, κύπελλα, μακέτες, εντυπωσιακά καπέλα και πολύχρωμες περούκες. Στο βάθος, σε έναν χώρο γεμάτο με ραπτομηχανές, οι έμπειρες τεχνίτριες του ραπτικού συνεργείου ασταμάτητα έραβαν, διόρθωναν ή προσάρμοζαν τα κοστούμια που δοκίμαζαν οι χορευτές και που απαιτούνται για να πραγματοποιήσουν επί σκηνής, τις παραμυθένιες φαντασιώσεις μας. Φέτος, το πρόγραμμα για τους χορευτές περιλαμβάνει προετοιμασία για τον «Καρυοθραύστη» του Tchaikovsky, που ξεκίνησε από τη Θεσσαλονίκη στις αρχές Δεκεμβρίου, για να επιστρέψει στο θέατρο Ολύμπια πριν τα Χριστούγεννα, για τη νέα παραγωγή «Καρμενσίτας» του Bizet, σε χορογραφία της Μαρίας Κουσουνή, που αισιοδοξεί να καλλιεργήσει ένα νέο κοινό μικρών θαυμαστών, για τη νέα χορογραφία του Αντώνη Φωνιαδάκη, σε μουσική Bach και Handel, καθώς επίσης και τις κλασικές όπερες “Aida” του Verdi και “Carmen” του Bizet. Αμέσως μόλις ξεκίνησαν οι πρόβες, διαπιστώσαμε ότι ξεκίνησαν και οι πραγματικές δυσκολίες. Την εικασία ότι η γοητεία της Αφροδίτης της Μήλου οφείλεται στο ελάττωμα του δι-

ly placed in lockers and hanging from rails, while the floor to ceiling shelves were filled with swords, cups, impressive hats and colourful wigs. In the back, in a room filled with sewing machines, experienced seamstresses sewed ceaselessly, adjusting and adapting the costumes that the dancers were trying on and which were necessary to fulfil our fairy tale fantasies on stage. This year, the dancers will be performing in “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, which premiered in early December in Thessaloniki and will return to the Olympia Theatre before Christmas for the new production of Bizet’s “Carmencitas”, choreographed by Maria Kousouni, who hopes to cultivate a new audience of young fans for the new choreography by Antonis Foniadakis to music by Bach and Handel, as well as classic operas including Verdi’s “Aida” and Bizet’s “Carmen”. As soon as the rehearsals started, so did the real challenges. The assumption that the charm of the Venus de Milo is due to the dismemberment of the statue or that a mistake in art signals the uniqueness of the project is in no way espoused by the teachers of the choreographies, who obsessively focus on every detail and insist on exhaustive repetition of each move of the choreography until perfection is achieved. Adagio, grand jeté, tour fouetté, tour en seconde, tour en l’air. The austere Doric manner in which commands are given leaves no room for error. In the first studio, the choreographer is teaching a demanding crowd scene from “Carmencitas”, while closely observing both individual and collective movements, as the overall picture is incredibly important in these scenes. In the adjacent studio, however, a sentimental deluge awaited me. First, the lead couple from “The Nutcracker”, followed by the triple allotment of the “Queen of the North” and finally, the “French Dance” with six young danc-

αμελισμού, ή την άποψη ότι το λάθος στην τέχνη υπογράφει τη μοναδικότητα του έργου, δεν φαίνεται να ασπάζονται οι δάσκαλοι των χορογραφιών, οι οποίοι με εμμονή εστιάζουν στη λεπτομέρεια και επιμένουν στην εξαντλητική επανάληψη κάθε κίνησης στη χορογραφία, ωσότου επιτευχθεί το τέλειο. Adagio, grand jeté, tour fouetté, tour en seconde, tour en l’air. Ο δωρικός τρόπος που δίνονται πλέον οι εντολές δεν αφήνει περιθώρια λάθους. Στην πρώτη αίθουσα, η χορογράφος διδάσκει μία απαιτητική, πολυπληθή σκηνή στη χορογραφία της «Καρμενσίτας», παρατηρώντας ενδελεχώς τόσο τις ατομικές, όσο και τις ομαδικές κινήσεις, καθώς η εποπτική εικόνα είναι εξαιρετικά σημαντική σε αυτές τις σκηνές. Στη διπλανή αίθουσα, όμως, με περίμενε ο συναισθηματικός καταιγισμός. Στην αρχή, το πρωταγωνιστικό ζευγάρι του «Καρυοθραύστη», στη συνέχεια, η τριπλή διανομή της «Βασίλισσας του Βορρά» και στο τέλος, ο «Γαλλικός Χορός» των έξι νεαρών χορευτών, μου χάρισαν μία συγκινητική εμπειρία ζωντανεύοντας με θαυμαστό τρόπο, μόνο για μένα, τη μουσική του «Καρυοθραύστη». Η αμέριστη υποστήριξη της σπουδαίας χορεύτριας, Ηώς Καλοχρήστου, και πλέον υπεύθυνης Δημοσίων Σχέσεων, χωρίς την οποία δεν θα κατάφερνα να εισβάλω στο άβατο, καθώς και η τυχαία γνωριμία, από την οποία ξεπήδησε η ιδέα του παρόντος κειμένου, με τον χορευτή Πέτρο Κουρουπάκη, μου πρόσφεραν μία μοναδική εμπειρία ζωής. Αφήνοντας πίσω μου μία ομάδα ευλογημένων καλλιτεχνών που μπορούν να ζουν το όνειρό τους καθημερινά, έφυγα χωρίς να πατάω στο έδαφος, με μία ψυχή που κάπως δειλά… χόρευε. Ναι, ναι, χόρευε! Ίσως τελικά να είχε δίκιο ο Maurice Béjart. ers, who gifted me with the most moving of experiences by conjuring, just for me, the music of “The Nutcracker” in a miraculous way. Shortly before the end of the day, the rain stopped and the sun found the dancers reeling from exhaustion and I felt incredibly emotional but happy. Without the unqualified support of the great dancer Io Kalochristou, who is currently in charge of Public Relations, I would never have succeeded in invading the sanctuary. It was a chance encounter with dancer Petros Kouroupakis that gave me the idea to write this article. These two events offered me a one-of-akind life experience. Leaving behind a group of blessed artists who are able to live their dream on a daily basis, I departed, feet barely touching the ground and with a soul that was timidly… dancing. Yes, yes, dancing! Perhaps Maurice Béjart was right. ΚΑΠΝΙΚΑΡΕΑ / KAPNIKAREAS
ΚΑΠΝΙΚΑΡΕΑ Το πρώτο εντυπωσιακό… εμπόδιο που θα αλλάξει τη θεματική της βόλτας στον εμπορικό πεζόδρομο της Ερμού είναι ο μικρός ναός της Παναγίας Καπνικαρέας, ένα από τα πλέον χαρακτηριστικά σημεία του βυζαντινού παρελθόντος της Αθήνας, που βρίσκεται καταμεσής του γνωστού δρόμου. Το όνομα του ναού οφείλεται μάλλον στον αρχικό κάτοχό του, ο οποίος ήταν εισπράκτορας του καπνικού φόρου στην πόλη. Χρονολογείται από τον 11ο περίπου αιώνα και είναι αφιερωμένος στα Εισόδια της Θεοτόκου. Πιθανολογείται πως ανεγέρθηκε στη θέση παλαιότερου χριστιανικού ναού που έκτισε η Αθηναία αυτοκράτειρα του Βυζαντίου Ευδοκία τον 5ο αιώνα μ.Χ. πάνω στα θεμέλια του αρχαίου ναού της Αθηνάς ή της Δήμητρας. Πολλές από τις αγιογραφίες στο εσωτερικού του δημιουργήθηκαν από τον περίφημο αγιογράφο Φώτη Κόντογλου. Πλέον ανήκει στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών.
KAPNIKAREAS The first impressive… barrier to alter the composition of the pedestrian shopping street Ermou is the small church of Panagias Kapnikareas, one of the most distinctive landmarks of the Byzantine past of Athens, which is located halfway down the well-known walkway. The church most likely took its name from its original owner, who was responsible for collecting tobacco taxes for the city. Kapnikareas dates from the 11th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is believed to have been erected in the place of an older Christian temple built by Eudocia, the Athenian Empress of the Byzantium in the 5th century A.D., on the foundations of the ancient temple of Athena or Demetra. Many of the icons of the church were created by renowned hagiographer Fotis Kontoglou. Kapnikareas is currently the property of the University of Athens.
ΚΑΣΤΕΛΛΑ Κατευθυνόμαστε νότια της Αθήνας με προορισμό την Καστέλλα, ή αλλιώς «το μπαλκόνι του Πειραιά», μία από τις πιο όμορφες και αριστοκρατικές συνοικίες του Πειραιά, με υπέροχες επαύλεις που μαρτυρούν το ένδοξο παρελθόν της. Η περιοχή της Καστέλλας ξεκινάει περίπου από εκεί που τελειώνει το Πασαλιμάνι και περιλαμβάνει το γραφικό Μικρολίμανο, ένα κομμάτι της πόλης και τον Λόφο της Καστέλλας με υψόμετρο 90 μ. Αν ξεκινήσετε τη βόλτα σας από το ψηλότερο σημείο της, θα προσέξετε ότι τα δρομάκια της (ή τα σκαλάκια) κατηφορίζουν, σχεδόν όλα, μέχρι το φαρδύ πεζοδρόμιο της λεωφόρου Παπαναστασίου, που είναι σαν να κρέμεται πάνω από το Μικρολίμανο. Στα ήρεμα νερά του λιμανιού, τα Σαββατοκύριακα, πλέουν τα βαρκάκια του Ιστιοπλοϊκού Ομίλου και τις υπόλοιπες μέρες λικνίζονται μικρά και μεγαλύτερα σκάφη, ενώ στα μπαρ και τα μεζεδοπωλεία που απλώνουν τραπεζάκια δίπλα στη θάλασσα συγκεντρώνονται πλήθη από κάθε γωνιά του λεκανοπεδίου.
KASTELLA Located south of Athens, Kastella, also known as “the balcony of Piraeus”, is one of the most beautiful and affluent neighbourhoods of the city. Its beautiful mansions are a testament to the glorious past of the neighbourhood. Kastella begins where the Pasalimani ends and encompasses the picturesque Mikrolimano harbour, a section of the city and Kastella Hill (90 metres above sea level). If you start your walk from the highest point of the hill, you will notice that the streets (or long flights of stairs) descend, almost without exception, to the wide sidewalk of Papanastasiou Avenue, which seems to hang above Mikrolimano. At the weekend, boats from the Yacht Club of Greece dot the calm waters of the harbour, while smaller and larger vessels sway there on other days, and multitudes of people from the entire Attica basin favour the bars and restaurants with tables by the sea.

ΚΕΡΑΜΕΙΚΟΣ Κατηφορίζοντας την πολύβουη και γεμάτη καταστήματα οδό Ερμού, στο τέλος της, θα βρεθείτε στη μικρή «πολιτεία» που μας παρέδωσε η κλασική Αθήνα, σε έναν από τους πιο εντυπωσιακούς αρχαιολογικούς χώρους. Ο Κεραμεικός πήρε το όνομά του από τον δήμο των Κεραμέων, κέντρο παραγωγής αττικών αγγείων. Όμως, εκεί ήταν και το επίσημο νεκροταφείο της αρχαίας Αθήνας από τον 11ο αι. π.Χ. έως τον 2ο αι. μ.Χ. Στον χώρο θα μάθετε πώς ήταν τα αρχαία τείχη, θα δείτε την κοίτη του Ηριδανού, το ξεκίνημα της αρχαίας Ιεράς Οδού που κατευθυνόταν στην Ελευσίνα και πλήθος επιτύμβιων μνημείων, όπως και αγάλματα, σκαλιστές αναπαραστάσεις, τμήμα των τειχών του Θεμιστοκλή, αλλά και τις δύο αθηναϊκές πύλες, το Δίπυλο και την Ιερά Πύλη, από όπου περνούσε κάθε χρόνο η πομπή των Ελευσίνιων Μυστηρίων. Επισκεφθείτε και το Μουσείο Κεραμεικού (είσοδος από Ερμού 148), που περιλαμβάνει ευρήματα από τις ανασκαφές της περιοχής. ΚΟΛΟΚΟΤΡΩΝΗ - ΤΟ ΑΓΑΛΜΑ Μπροστά από την Παλαιά Βουλή (η οποία στεγάζει πια το Εθνικό Ιστορικό Μουσείο,) στην οδό Σταδίου, βρίσκεται το άγαλμα του ήρωα της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης, Θεόδωρου Κολοκοτρώνη. KERAMEIKOS At the foot of bustling and commercial Ermou Street, in one of the most impressive archaeological sites of the city, lies the small “state” that gave us classic Athens. Kerameikos took its name from the municipality of Kerameion, the centre of Attic pottery production. But it was also the site of the official cemetery of Ancient Athens from the 11th century B.C. to the 2nd century A.D. At the site, visitors will learn about the ancient walls, see the bed of the ancient River Eridanus, the start of ancient Iera Odos, which led to Eleusis, and numerous funerary monuments, such as statues, carved representations, sections of the wall of Themistocles and the two Athenian gates: Dipylon and Iera Pyli (Sacred Gate), through which the procession of the Eleusinian Mysteries passed each year. Be sure to visit the Kerameikos Museum (entrance at 148 Ermou Street), which features finds from excavations in the area. KOLOKOTRONIS - THE STATUE The statue of Theodoros Kolokotronis, hero of the Greek revolution, stands on Stadiou Street, in front of the Old Parliament (which now houses the National History Museum). A work of art created by Lazaros Sochou, the statue was built in 1900 in Paris and set up in Athens in 1904. The equestrian statue of Kolokotronis was awarded the gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and was also recognised by the Academy of Rome. KOLOKOTRONI - THE STREET One of the oldest streets in Athens, it boasts 22 neoclassical buildings, the most important of which stands at the corner of Stadiou Street, the

επαφή με τη σκηνοθέτιδα των βίντεο της τελετής των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων του 2004 και των εγκαινίων του Μουσείου της Ακρόπολης δεν ήταν εύκολη, αφού ζει στην Αμερική και ταξιδεύει συνεχώς. Τη βρήκαμε τελικά στο φεστιβάλ Θεσσαλονίκης, λίγο πριν από τη συμμετοχή της σε συζήτηση, ενώπιον του κοινού, στο πλαίσιο της προβολής του “Chevalier”. Ποιες σκέψεις και σχέδια σας κρατούν τώρα στις ΗΠΑ; Πέρυσι, με κάλεσαν να διδάξω σκηνοθεσία στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Harvard και φέτος, το ίδιο εκπαιδευτικό ίδρυμα μου έδωσε μία υποτροφία όπου με προσκαλεί, ανάμεσα σε πενήντα επιστήμονες και τρεις καλλιτέχνες, για έναν χρόνο, με στόχο την προετοιμασία της ταινίας επιστημονικής φαντασίας “Duncharon”. Συμμετέχω και σε ένα έτερο project, υπό το Film Society του Lincoln Center, όπου προσκαλείται ένας σκηνοθέτης τον χρόνο, για να γράψει ένα σενάριο σε σπίτι που του παραχωρούν οι ίδιοι για τρεις μήνες. Ετσι, Δευτέρα, Τρίτη και Τετάρτη είμαι στο Harvard, ενώ την υπόλοιπη εβδομάδα ζω στη Νέα Υόρκη, όπου γράφω μία μαύρη κωμωδία που λέγεται “White Knuckles”. Όταν κορυφώνεται η νοσταλγία σας για την Ελλάδα, ποια είναι η πρώτη εικόνα της χώρας που σας έρχεται στο μυαλό; Μία μικρή παραλία με χαλίκια και βραχάκια. Αυτό λαχταρώ. Το άλλο που μου δημιουργεί φοβερή νοσταλγία είναι μία μυρωδιά, το θυμάρι στις Κυκλάδες, στην καρδιά του μεσημεριού. Και ως ήχος, τα μαχαιροπίρουνα πάνω στα πιάτα στις βεράντες της Αθήνας, υπό τον ήχο της τηλεόρασης. Δεν υπάρχει αυτός ο ήχος, ακόμα και σε χώρες όπου ο κόσμος ζει στις βεράντες. Αισθάνομαι ασφαλής όταν ακούω αυτόν τον ήχο!

Contacting the director of the 2004 Olympic Games ceremonies and the opening of the Acropolis Museum was no mean feat, as she lives in America and travels extensively. We finally caught up with her at the Thessaloniki Festival, shortly before her panel with the audience, where she discussed “Chevalier”. What is currently keeping you in the USA? Last year I was invited to teach at Harvard University as a visiting faculty member, and this year they offered me a scholarship for a year, as part of a group of fifty scientists and three artists, with the aim to prepare “Duncharon”, a science fiction film. I am also collaborating on another project organised by the Film Society at the Lincoln Center, where one director is invited each year to write a screenplay in accommodation provided by the Center for three months. Hence, I am at Harvard on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and I spend the rest of the week in New York, where I am writing a black comedy called “White Knuckles”. When feeling nostalgic for Greece, what is the first image that comes to mind? A small beach with pebbles and rocks. I yearn for it. I am also incredibly nostalgic for a particular aroma, the smell of thyme in the Cyclades, at high noon. And as for sounds, the clink of cutlery on the verandas of Athens, with the muted sound of the television in the background. This sound isn’t heard anywhere else in the world, even in countries where people live on their verandas. I feel safe when I hear that sound!

Ποια συγκεκριμένα στοιχεία, στην πορεία σας ως σκηνοθέτιδα, σας προσέδωσε η εμπειρία της ενασχόλησης με την τελετή των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων; Μετά από αυτή την εμπειρία, άλλαξε όλη μου η οπτική σε σχέση και με το σινεμά. Όταν ο Δημήτρης Παπαϊωάννου μού ζήτησε να συμμετάσχω στην ομάδα των Ολυμπιακών, είχα μόλις τελειώσει, με τη βοήθεια φίλων, την πρώτη μου ταινία μεγάλου μήκους, “Petra Going”, που είχα καταφέρει με ελάχιστα χρήματα. Ξαφνικά, λοιπόν, βρέθηκα να είμαι παραγωγός και σκηνοθέτις των βίντεο των τελετών, ενώ ταυτόχρονα συνεργαζόμουν με το NBC για την κάλυψη της «φιέστας». Ο Δημήτρης Παπαϊωάννου ενθάρρυνε και ενέπνεε την αισθητική της δουλειάς μου και με έμαθε πώς μπορείς να οργανώνεις τους γύρω σου δημιουργικά και να κάνεις σωστή κατανομή της εργασίας. Μπορείτε να μας περιγράψετε πώς έγινε και το Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης της Νέας Υόρκης αγόρασε την πρώτη, μεγάλου μήκους, ταινία σας; Ως φοιτήτρια στο New York University, δούλεψα στο Μουσείο, όπου έκανα αναφορά για την κατάσταση των ταινιών του αρχείου, δηλαδή για το ποιες ταινίες μπορούσαν να προβληθούν και ποιες όχι. Εκεί, γνώρισα τη Jytte Jensen, που ήταν επιμελήτρια στο τμήμα κινηματογράφου και έγινε ο μέντοράς μου. Όταν λοιπόν ολοκλήρωσα την πρώτη μου ταινία, με συμβούλευσε να τη δείξω στο Μουσείο, για την περίπτωση που θα τους ενδιέφερε να την αποκτήσουν για τη μόνιμη συλλογή τους: εκείνοι την επέλεξαν, υποστηρίζοντας πως συντελεί στην πρόοδο της εποχής της... για να αγοράσουν, μετά από λίγο καιρό, άλλες δύο! What specific elements did working on the Olympic Games ceremony offer you as a director? The experience altered my entire perspective of cinema. When Dimitris Papaioannou asked me to become part of the Olympic team, I had just finished, with the help of friends, working on my first feature film “Petra Going”, which I managed to shoot on a shoestring budget. Suddenly, I was the producer and director of the videos of the ceremonies, and was also in talks with NBC for the coverage of the “fiesta”. Dimitris Papaioannou encouraged and inspired the aesthetics of my work and taught me how to organise the people around me in a creative manner and to delegate a fair division of labour. Can you tell us how it came about that the Museum of Modern Art in New York purchased your first, feature length film? When I was a student at New York University, I worked at the museum, where I reported on the status of the films in the archive, informing the museum as to which films could be screened or not. It was there that I met the woman who was to become my mentor, Jytte Jensen, curator of the film department. And when I finished my first film, she advised me to show it to the museum to see if they were interested in acquiring it for the permanent collection. They were claiming that it contributed to the progress of its time… Not too long afterwards, they bought two more of my films! What is the commentary of “Chevalier” on the new style and ethos of the modern man in the Western world? What interested me from the start was not to make a film on the nature of men, but a film on man and his “vulnerable” side that depicted how defenceless we are. I wanted to make a film that examined the valuation game we are con-
άλωτοι είμαστε. Ήθελα μία ταινία γύρω από το παιχνίδι της αξιολόγησης που ζούμε διαρκώς ανάμεσα σε εμάς, τον εαυτό μας, και τους άλλους -υποσυνείδητα ή συνειδητά το κάνουμε συνεχώς. Ήθελα, όμως, να ρίξω και μία ματιά στην ανδρική φιλία... Ήσασταν μία γυναίκα απέναντι σε πολλούς άντρες. Μπορείτε να αναφέρετε κάποιες αστείες ή άβολες στιγμές; Κάποιες φορές αισθανόμουν ως δασκάλα νηπιαγωγείου. Γιατί, ώρες ώρες, ανάμεσα στις λήψεις έκαναν τόση πλάκα, με συνέπεια, μετά, στο γύρισμα, να είναι εξαντλημένοι. Έπρεπε να τους λέω ξανά και ξανά: «Παιδιά, ησυχία! Συγκεντρωθείτε! Πάμε λήψη!». Σε μία εποχή που η χώρα περνάει μία από τις μεγαλύτερες κρίσεις των τελευταίων δεκαετιών, ο ελληνικός κινηματογράφος ανθεί. Αυτό επιβεβαιώνει όσους ισχυρίζονται ότι η Τέχνη διανύει την πιο δημιουργική της φάση κατά τις μεγαλύτερες κοινωνικές κρίσεις; Η άνθηση του ελληνικού σινεμά, ξεκίνησε πολύ πριν από την κρίση, με τις ταινίες του Γιάνναρη, του Οικονομίδη και άλλων στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1990. Ο κινηματογράφος, σήμερα, αποτελεί μάθημα αυτοοργάνωσης για μία χώρα. Συνειδητοποιώ πάντως πως, μέσα από την κρίση, οι Νεοέλληνες ερχόμαστε για πρώτη φορά αντιμέτωποι με τον εαυτό μας. Can you tell us about some funny or embarrassing moments? I sometimes felt like a kindergarten teacher. There were times during between shots that had so much fun that they were exhausted when it was time to shoot. I had to repeat, over and over again: “Quiet, guys! Concentrate! Action!” At a time when the country is going through one of the biggest crises of the past decades, Greek cinema is thriving. Does this substantiate the claim that Art is at its most creative in times of great social crisis? Greek cinema began to thrive long before the crisis, with films by Giannaris, Economides and others in the late 1990s. Cinema today is a lesson in a country's self-organisation. I have come to the realisation that the crisis has forced modern Greeks to confront ourselves. It is a crisis that is primarily moral in nature and that “spreads” to Art. Εκεί που χόρευαν οι Νύμφες Στο πιο εξέχoν σημείο του Θησείου, πλάι στα απομεινάρια του Ιερού Ναού των Νυμφών, το αρχιτεκτόνημα του Theophil Hansen γίνεται το εισιτήριο για ένα ταξίδι στον κόσμο των αστερισμών και των πλανητών. Tο Αστεροσκοπείο Αθηνών ξεκινάει την πορεία του περί το 1842, όταν ο καθηγητής Αστρονομίας, Γεώργιος Βούρης, πείθει τον Έλληνα πρόξενο της Βιέννης, βαρόνο Γεώργιο Σίνα, για τη σπουδαιότητα της ύπαρξης ενός Αστεροσκοπείου στην Ελλάδα. Οι λόγοι; Καθαρά πρακτικοί, αφού υπήρχε ανάγκη μετεωρολογικών προβλέψεων και μέτρησης του χρόνου. Έτσι λοιπόν, ο Φον Σίνας, δωρίζει στο ελληνικό κράτος το αστρονομικό ποσό των 500.000 δραχμών και στις 26 Ιουνίου του 1842 -μάλιστα με έκλειψη Ηλίου- τοποθετείται ο θεμέλιος λίθος. Επιστημονικά βιβλία, μετεωρολογικά όργανα καθώς και το πρώτο τηλεσκόπιο στήνουν ένα οργανωμένο δίκτυο μετεωρολογικών σταθμών και το Αστεροσκοπείο Αθηνών τίθεται σε λειτουργία υπό τη διεύθυνση του Γεώργιου Βούρη. Τον διαδέχεται ο Γερμανός αστρονόμος Julius Schmidt, ο οποίος μετοικεί στην Ελλάδα και αναλαμβάνει την εκπόνηση του λεπτομερέστερου χάρτη της Σελήνης του 19ου αιώνα. Έπειτα, η διεύθυνση περνά στα χέρια των παιδιών τού Γεώργιου Σίνα, για να καταλήξει ύστερα από μία πολυετή φθίνουσα πορεία στον ικανότατο Δημήτριο Αιγινήτη, ο οποίος χωρίζει το Αστεροσκοπείο σε τρία Τμήματα (σημερινά Ινστιτούτα): Αστρονομίας, Περιβάλλοντος και Γεωδυναμικού, που λειτουργούν μέχρι και σήμερα.
Where the Nymphs danced At the most prominent point of Thissio, next to the ruins of the Sanctuary of the Nymphs, the building designed by architect Theophil Hansen is admission into a world of constellations and planets. The National Observatory of Athens embarked on its course circa 1842, when Professor of Astronomy Georgios Vouris managed to convince Baron Georgios von Sina, the Greek consul in Vienna, that it was of paramount importance to establish an Observatory in Greece. The reasons? Purely practical, as there was a need for meteorological forecasting and time measurement. Hence, von Sina, donated the astronomical sum of 500,000 Drachma to the Greek State, and on 26 June 1842 (a day marked by a partial eclipse of the sun), the foundation stone was placed. Scientific books, meteorological instruments and the first telescope comprised an organised network of meteorological stations, while the National Observatory of Athens operated under the direction of Georgios Vouris. He was succeeded by the German astronomer Julius Schmidt, who arrived in Greece to undertake the scientific observations on the new institute. In the process Schmidt produced the most detailed map of the moon in the 19th century. The management of the Observatory then passed into the hands of Sina's children and after a period of decline that lasted several years, it was taken over by the very capable Dimitrios Eginitis, who restructured the Observa-

Η αίθουσα του… χρόνου Περνώντας το κατώφλι του κτηρίου Σίνα και αφήνοντας πίσω μας τη «μυστική» Βιβλιοθήκη 4.000 σπάνιων επιστημονικών συγγραμμάτων, συναντάμε την αίθουσα του χρόνου -μία ανάσα μακριά από την πιο μαγική ξενάγηση μουσείου και ένα μόλις βήμα από το άπειρο! Από αυτόν ακριβώς τον χώρο και με το ίδιο μεσημβρινό τηλεσκόπιο Starke-Fraunhofer που στέκει εκεί μέχρι και σήμερα, οι αστρονόμοι μελετούσαν τις αστρικές τροχιές και υπολόγιζαν τον χρόνο. Λόγω της περιστροφικής κίνησης της Γης γύρω από τον εαυτό της, ο παρατηρητής βλέπει τη διέλευση ενός συγκεκριμένου αστεριού που έχει θέσει υπό παρακολούθηση ακριβώς στο ίδιο σημείο, έπειτα από ένα 24ωρο. Έτσι, όταν για παράδειγμα ο αστρονόμος Βούρης εντόπιζε στο νήμα του τηλεσκοπίου τον ίδιο αστέρα που είχε περάσει από εκεί την προηγούμενη βραδιά στις 09:00 η ώρα, ήξερε πως το εκκρεμές έπρεπε να δείχνει 09:00, αφού ο ουρανός δεν λέει ποτέ ψέματα. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο λοιπόν, όταν το εκκρεμές έδειχνε 12 το μεσημέρι, μία σφαίρα που βρισκόταν τοποθετημένη στον θόλο του κτηρίου και συνδεόταν μαζί του μηχανικά έπεφτε δίνοντας το σήμα στις εκκλησίες να σημάνουν τις καμπάνες και οι πολίτες να ρυθμίσουν τα ρολόγια τους στη σωστή ώρα. Ένας τεχνολογικός θησαυρός Καθώς συνεχίζεται η ξενάγηση, σειρά έχει η αίθουσα όπου φυλάσσεται το σημαντικότερο απόκτημα του μουσείου, ένα πιστό αντίγραφο του μηχανισμού των Αντικυθήρων. Ο μηχανισμός των Αντικυθήρων έδειχνε τη θέση διαφόρων ουράνιων σωμάτων, πιθανώς και πλανητών, προέβλεπε εκλείψεις καθώς και τις κινητές εορτές των Ελλήνων (Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες, Νέμεα, Πύθια, Ίσθμια). Πρόκειται, στην ουσία, για το αρχαιότερο επιστημονικό όργανο, που εμπεριέχει τέτοια γνώση Αστρονομίας και Μηχανολογίας που τότε ο ανθρώπινος νους δεν φανταζόταν πως υπήρχε. Ο περίπλους της Σελήνης Η ξενάγηση ολοκληρώνεται στο κτήριο Σίνα, με μία βόλτα στην αίθουσα του δεύτερου ορόφου που αποτελεί, ίσως, το ιστορικότερο και πιο μαγικό σημείο του Αστεροσκοπείου. Ένας χώρος καλυμμένος από χάλκινο θόλο, ο οποίος είναι φιλοτεχνημένος εξωτερικά με τρισδιάστατες φιγούρες του ζωδιακού κύκλου, στεγάζει το ισημερινό τηλεσκόπιο Ploessl, με το οποίο ο αστρονόμος Julius Schmidt σχεδίασε τον πλέον ακριβή χάρτη της Σελήνης του 19ου αιώνα. Έτη φωτός Η βόλτα στο Σύμπαν κλείνει με τη μεταφορά μας στον λόφο της Πνύκας, όπου βρίσκεται το μεγάλο ισημερινό τηλεσκόπιο που φέρει το όνομα του δωρητή Δωρίδη. Τοποθετημένο σε περιστρεφόμενο θόλο με ξύλινη επένδυση, το τηλεσκόπιο βρίσκεται εδώ και έναν χρόνο ξανά σε λειτουργία και είναι ανοιχτό προς το κοινό για βραδιές παρατήρησης. Μία κατάλληλα μελετημένη κλίμακα με ξύλινα σκαλοπάτια, η οποία εδράζεται σε σιδηροτροχιές και κινείται σε δύο οριζόντιους άξονες προς και πέριξ του τηλεσκοπίου, επιτρέπει στους επισκέπτες να κοιτάξουν μέσα από το προσοφθάλμιο και να περιπλανηθούν στους κρατήρες της Σελήνης, να θαυμάσουν τη Μεγάλη Άρκτο και να αγγίξουν τη λάμψη αστέρων που βρίσκονται 400 έτη φωτός μακριά.

The room of… time Leaving the “secret” library with 4,000 rare scientific books behind us, we cross the threshold of the Sina building and find the room of time -just a stone’s throw from the most magical museum tour and a footstep away from infinity! It was in this room and at this very same Starke-Fraunhofer meridian telescope, standing in precisely the same spot, that astronomers studied stellar orbits and calculated time. Due to the earth’s rotation on its axis, the observer saw the movement of a particular star that had initially been scheduled for observation 24 hours earlier, in the identical position. Hence, when the astronomer Vouris, for example, spotted the same star in the telescope that he had observed the previous evening at 9.00, he knew that after applying some corrections for the annual revolution of the earth around the sun, the pendulum should indicate it was 9.00, because the sky never lied. Therefore, when the pendulum showed 12.00 noon, a ball installed and mechanically connected to the dome of the building fell, giving the signal to the churches to ring the bells and citizens adjusted their watches to the correct time. A technological treasure The tour continues to the room housing the most important acquisition of the museum, the exact replica of the Antikythera Mechanism. The Antikythera Mechanism revealed the position of various celestial bodies, predicted eclipses, and the movable Greek feast days (Olympic Games, Nemea, Pythia, Isthmia). It is, in essence, the oldest scientific instrument to contain such significant Astronomy and Engineering knowledge and it is difficult to fathom that the human mind was so advanced at such an early date. Around the Moon The tour comes to an end at the Sina building, in a room on the second floor which is, perhaps, the most historic and magical place in the Observatory. The room is covered by a copper dome, with three-dimensional zodiac figures on its exterior and houses the Ploessl equatorial telescope, with which astronomer Julius Schmidt drew the most accurate map of the Moon in the 19th century. Light years The circuit of the universe comes to its end at Pnyx Hill, where the large equatorial telescope is located and which is named after donor Doridis. Installed on a rotating dome with wood panelling, the telescope has become fully operational again in the past year and is open to the public during stargazing nights. A well-planned flight of wooden stairs, which is mounted on iron rails and moves on two horizontal axes to and around the telescope, permits visitors to look through the eyepiece and wander through the craters of the moon, admire the Ursa Major (Great Bear) constellation and “touch” the shimmery light of stars that are 400 light years away.

οια αφορμή σάς φέρνει εδώ ως συνδαιτυμόνες; Α.Π.: Προσκάλεσα τον Δημήτρη Καραντζά από περιέργεια. Μέσα από την επιλογή των έργων και τη διαχείριση των κειμένων, προδίδεται η ευφυΐα του, και μάλιστα η συναισθηματική, η οποία με κάνει να θέλω να τον γνωρίσω. Έχει την ικανότητα να καταπιάνεται με τον Δημητριάδη, τον Πίντερ και τη Βιρτζίνια Γουλφ και να συγκινεί εμένα, που έχω μεγάλη επαγγελματική τριβή με το αντικείμενο, έναν έφηβο, αλλά και ανθρώπους που δεν έχουν ξαναπάει στο θέατρο, τόσο στην Ελλάδα όσο και στο εξωτερικό. Και είναι μόλις 28 ετών! Δ.Κ.: Με την Αφροδίτη, έχω αισθανθεί ότι μπορώ να φέρομαι όπως θέλω κι όπως είμαι. Πέρα από την προσωπική συμμετοχή μου στη Στέγη Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών, πέρυσι με την παράσταση «Κυκλισμός του Τετραγώνου» και φέτος με τα «Κύματα», με κάνει να θέλω να είμαι εδώ το γεγονός ότι η Αφροδίτη, αλλά και όλη η ομάδα της Στέγης, πέρα από τη δουλειά που κάνουν, έχουν την έγνοια να γίνει ο πολιτισμός που παράγεται εξαγώγιμο πνευματικό προϊόν κι επιμένουν στην όξυνση του πνεύματος και της κριτικής σκέψης. Τόσο η διαδρομή της Στέγης, όσο και η σκηνοθετική πορεία του κυρίου Καραντζά ξεκίνησαν στην Ελλάδα της κρίσης… Α.Π.: Πράγματι, και ως συγκυρία, ενίσχυσε ακόμη περισσότερο την ξεκάθαρη άποψή μας ότι έπρεπε να δημιουργηθεί μία πλατφόρμα σύγχρονου πολιτισμού που θα οξύνει την πολιτική σκέψη, την κριτική ικανότητα. Διαφορετικά, δεν θα μπορούσαμε να μιλάμε για σύγχρονο πολιτισμό. Η Στέγη αποτελεί έναν πνευματικό οργανισμό που αφουγκράζεται τα προβλήματα της κοινωνίας και βρίσκεται δίπλα σε σκεπτόμενους ανθρώπους, είτε είναι οι καλλιτέχνες, είτε το κοινό, είτε οι συμπαραγωγοί μας από τη Γαλλία, τη Νέα Ζηλανδία ή τη Λατινική Αμερική. Η αγωνία της εποχής, τότε, λειτούργησε συνεκτικά. Σήμερα, κανείς δεν μπορεί να πει ότι δεν έχει αντιληφθεί τι συμβαίνει, όχι μόνο στην Ελλάδα πια, αλλά παντού: ο πλανήτης φλέγεται. Δ.Κ.: Μέσα στην κρίση, όταν παρουσιάστηκαν ευκαιρίες, αισθανόμουν αμήχανα. Συνηθίζουμε, βεβαίως, να αναφέρουμε το momentum της κρίσης, για να χαρακτηρίσουμε κάποια πράγματα ως πολυτέλεια. Ο πολιτισμός, ωστόσο, δεν είναι πολυτέλεια. Δεν μπορούμε να παρακάμπτουμε τη δημιουργικότητα. Η δουλειά σας αποτελεί λύση στην κρίση; Α.Π.: Η δική μου δουλειά είναι να πείσω όλους, ακόμη κι εκείνους που δυσκολεύονται να ζήσουν, ότι αξίζει να επενδύσουν 7 ευρώ σε ένα εισιτήριο. Αυτό που θα ζήσεις, θα λειτουργήσει παρηγορητικά, όχι επειδή απλώς θα ξεχαστείς αλλά επειδή θα σε βοηθήσει να κατανοήσεις τι συμβαίνει γύρω σου κι εντός σου, ότι είσαι μέλος μίας κοινότητας που βιώνει κάτι αντίστοιχο. Μία παράσταση μπορεί να σου αλλάξει τη ζωή; Α.Π.: Σαφώς -και μπορεί να σε ακολουθεί για πάντα. Η παιδεία και ο πολιτισμός είναι οχή-

His intelligence, which has emotional undertones, is evident in his choice of projects and approach to the written word, and it was this very intelligence that intrigued me. He is capable of engaging with Dimitriadis, Pinter and Virginia Woolf in such a way that touches me, a seasoned professional with experience in the subject, as well as adolescents and people who have never been to the theatre, either in Greece or abroad! And he’s only 28 years old! D.K.: I feel as though I can behave as I like and be myself with Afroditi. Beyond my personal involvement with the Onassis Cultural Center, last year with “The Circle of the Square” and this year with “The Waves”, I want to be here because Afroditi and the entire team of the Onassis Cultural Centre do excellent work, are focused on producing cultural events that are the definition of an exportable intellectual product, and insist on honing intellect and critical thinking. Both the Onassis Cultural Centre and the directing career of Mr Karantzas began in Greece in the midst of a financial crisis… A.P.: That’s true, and this strengthened our view that the establishment of a modern cultural platform with the aim to sharpen political thought and critical ability was imperative. Otherwise, we couldn’t begin to even speak of modern culture. The Onassis Cultural Centre is a spiritual organisation that listens to the problems of society and offers support to contemplative people, whether they are artists, audiences or our partners from France, New Zealand or Latin America. Thus, the anxiety of our time functions coherently. Today, no person can say that they are unaware of what is happening around them, not just in Greece but everywhere: the entire planet is ablaze. D.K.: When opportunities presented themselves in the midst of the crisis, I felt disconcerted. We often refer to the momentum of the crisis and describe some things as luxuries. Culture, however, is not a luxury. We can’t circumvent creativity. Can your work offer a solution to the crisis? A.P.: My job is to convince everyone, even those finding it difficult to make ends meet, that it is worth spending 7 Euros on a ticket. The experience will be a comforting one, not just for the escape, but because it will help you understand what is going on around you and within you and that you are a member of a society that is going through similar experiences. Can a play change your life? A.P.: Of course -and it can stay with you forever. Education and culture are vehicles of social solidarity and materials of social cohesion. Το θέμα δεν είναι να εξεγερθούμε, αλλά να αντιληφθούμε, να σκεφτούμε, να προβληματιστούμε. Δουλεύετε πολλές ώρες. Υπάρχει ελεύθερος χρόνος για έμπνευση, για έρευνα; Δ.Κ.: Ό,τι κι αν κάνω μέσα στην ημέρα, δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση να μη βρεθώ το βράδυ με τους αγαπημένους μου ανθρώπους. Δεν είμαι η τυπική περίπτωση του «στοχαστή πάνω από το βιβλίο». Ιεραρχώ πρώτα τις σχέσεις κι έπειτα τη δουλειά, διότι οι πρώτες τροφοδοτούν τη δημιουργία. Δεν θα μπορούσα να ανταποκρίνομαι διαφορετικά. Α.Π.: Συμφωνώ. Δεν ξεχωρίζει ο ένας χρόνος από τον άλλο. Ό,τι βλέπεις και ζεις, συνδέεται, αποκωδικοποιείται και επανέρχεται σε απρόσμενες στιγμές. Λειτουργούμε σε πολλά επίπεδα, κι όταν είναι η στιγμή τους, θα έρθουν μπροστά. Μία στιγμή είναι αρκετή, ακόμη και φορές που δεν υπάρχει το πλαίσιο, όπως όταν είσαι με φίλους. Η διάσωση μέσω της τύχης, του αυθόρμητου, έρχεται μόνο όταν ζεις, συναναστρέφεσαι κι εκτίθεσαι. Η Στέγη Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών είναι πλέον πέντε ετών. Ποιο είναι το όραμα για το μέλλον της; Α.Π.: Η υποστήριξη και η απελευθέρωση των δυνάμεων είναι το κοινό όραμα για όλους όσοι δουλεύουμε εκεί: να αποτελούμε σχεδία και να γίνουμε αέρας για τους καλλιτέχνες, για να πάνε εκεί που μπορούν και θέλουν. Ταυτόχρονα, να είμαστε η «στέγη» για εκείνους που επιθυμούν να δουν, εκείνους που δεν έχουν δει θέατρο και θεάματα. Δεν θέλουμε ο θεατής να συμπληρώσει βιογραφικό πριν μας επισκεφθεί. Να απελευθερωθεί, και να δει μ’ ένα twist, όλα όσα συζητάμε και ζούμε. Να δει, να ακούσει, να αισθανθεί και να πολλαπλασιάσει την εμπειρία. Όταν ξαπλώσει, να έχει κάτι να σκεφτεί. Είστε ένας νέος και πολύ δραστήριος καλλιτέχνης. Η Ελλάδα είναι ασφάλεια ή εμπόδιο; Δ.Κ.: Ο καλλιτέχνης που ζει εδώ έχει περιορισμένα ερεθίσματα. Χωρίς ερεθίσματα, αυτοκτονείς. Δεν θέλω να συνεχίσω να ενδιαφέρομαι μόνο για το τι θα κάνω του χρόνου. Απαιτείται προσωπική αντίσταση. Πήγα για έναν μήνα στις Βρυξέλλες, καλεσμένος ενός φεστιβάλ -έζησα τον αέρα της πόλης, της συναναστροφής με τους κατοίκους, τους θεατές. Ένα βράδυ, μάλιστα, είχε κανονιστεί και συζήτηση με θεατές, οι οποίοι είχαν αποχωρήσει από την παράσταση! Εδώ τραβάμε μία κόκκινη γραμμή και δεν επιστρέφουμε, δεν ζητάμε εξήγηση. Α.Π.: Ο κίνδυνος της ασφάλειας μπορεί να λειτουργήσει και ισοπεδωτικά. Αποφασίζεις αν θες να είσαι μικρό ψάρι σε μεγάλη λίμνη. Είναι θέμα χαρακτήρα και απόφασης, αφορά στο ταλέντο ενός μεγάλου δημιουργού να παίρνει το τίποτα και να το καθιστά σημαντικό. Αυτό είναι το κέρδος: να βλέπουμε, με μία πιο ποιητική ματιά, την καθημερινότητα. Μπορείς να ζήσεις χωρίς τέχνη: δεν είναι προϋπόθεση αλλά λόγος για να ζεις.

tolerance, hatred and racism. We don’t aim to replace the State. We are here to support not supplant. D.K.: It is important to restore the forgotten concept of humanism. Art can do that. The crisis should not be an excuse for the State not to support productions. Funding should be offered based on merit and initiative should not be obstructed -it drowns the spirit. Rebellion isn’t the answer, but understanding, thinking and reflection are. You work long hours. Do you have much free time for inspiration, for research? D.K.: No matter what I do during the day, I will always find time for the people I love in the evening. I’m not your typical “thinker poring over a book”. I put relationships over work, because they feed creativity. I couldn’t function any other way. A.P.: I agree. Each year flows into the next. The things we see and experience are linked, decoded and reformed into unexpected moments. We operate on many levels, and when the time is right, the appropriate one moves to the forefront. A single moment is enough, even at unstructured times, like when you are with friends. Deliverance comes through luck, through spontaneity -it comes through life, socialisation and exposure. The Onassis Cultural Centre is five years old. What is the vision for its future? A.P.: The shared vision of everyone who works there is to support and release the forces: to becomethe raft and the air the artists breathe so they can achieve their goals. Moreover, we want to be the “shelter” for people wanting to see, those who have not seen performances and theatre. We don’t want our audience to write their curriculum vitae before coming to visit us. We hope they will feel release and see everything we talk about and experience with a twist, and watch, listen, feel and multiply the experience. When they lie down for the night, we hope they will have something to think about. You are a young and active artist. Is Greece a safe haven or obstacle? D.K.: Artists living here are exposed to limited stimuli. Without stimuli, you feel suicidal. I don’t want to continue to be interested only in what I will do the following year. It requires personal resistance. I went to Brussels for a month, as a guest at a festival -and experienced the air of the city, interaction with its residents and audience members. Imagine that one night a discussion was arranged with audience members who had left mid-performance. Here in Greece we would never dream of trying to comprehend what had gone wrong or ask for explanations. A.P.: The danger of a safe haven is that it can be levelling. You need to decide if you want to be a small fish in a big pond. It comes down to character and decisiveness -the talent a great artist has to take something insignificant and turn it into something important. That is what we gain: to see our daily lives in a more poetic way. It is possible to live without art: it is a reason to live rather than a condition for living.

ΦΙΛΕΤΟ ΜΑΥΡΟΥ ΜΠΑΚΑΛΙΑΡΟΥ ΜΕ ΜΑΥΡΟ ΡΥΖΙ ΚΑΙ ΣΑΛΤΣΑ ΤΕΡΙΓΙΑΚΙ Το πιάτο είναι εμπνευσμένο από την ασιατική κουζίνα. Κυρίαρχη εδώ είναι η σπιτική σάλτσα τεριγιάκι, που χρησιμοποιείται κυρίως στην ιαπωνική κουζίνα και έχει ως βάση της τη σόγια σως, με αρκετά έντονο το άρωμα του τζίντζερ. Η βασική πρώτη ύλη είναι το ψάρι. Το φιλέτο μαύρου μπακαλιάρου είναι ένα πολύ ιδιαίτερο κομμάτι ψαριού, με ευαίσθητη υφή και λεπτά χαρακτηριστικά στη γεύση του. Η σάλτσα αποτελεί τον συνδετικό ιστό μεταξύ των δύο βασικών συστατικών του πιάτου, του ψαριού και του ρυζιού. Τόσο το ψάρι, όσο και το άγριο ρύζι, μαρινάρονται στη σάλτσα τεριγιάκι, στην οποία έχουμε προσθέσει τζίντζερ και καυτερή πιπεριά, για να βγάλει πιο πλούσια αρώματα το ρύζι. Ο μαύρος μπακαλιάρος συνοδεύεται με μαύρο ρύζι, το οποίο, εκτός από τη μεγάλη διατροφική του αξία, είναι ιδανικό γιατί δεν καλύπτει την ισορροπία στην τελική γεύση.
BLACK COD FILLET WITH WILD RICE AND TERIYAKI SAUCE This dish is inspired by Asian cuisine. The homemade teriyaki sauce, which is mainly used in Japanese cuisine, dominates. It has a soy sauce base and an aroma of ginger. Fish is the main ingredient. The black cod fillet is a very special cut of fish, with a delicate texture and fine flavour. The sauce acts as a connective fibre between the two main components of the dish: the fish and the rice. Both the fish and the wild rice are marinated in teriyaki sauce, to which ginger and hot pepper have been added to extract the richer aromas of the rice. The black cod is served with wild rice, which apart from its high nutritional value, is the ideal accompaniment because it doesn’t overpower the balance of the final taste. A dash of sesame oil and sesame seeds on the fish completes the fabric of the taste, smoothing the contrasts caused by the diversity of the ingredients. The dish, which is recommended for

ο 2009, o Δήμος Αθηναίων δημιούργησε το site “This is Athens”. Σ’ αυτό, οι Αθηναίοι πολίτες αναρτούσαν φωτογραφίες από την πόλη τους και έγραφαν μόνοι τους την αντίστοιχη λεζάντα. Το αποτέλεσμα ήταν θεαματικό: οι πιο γοητευτικές πτυχές της Αθήνας δημιούργησαν ένα τεράστιο κολάζ, τα «κλικ» ξεπέρασαν κάθε προσδοκία και το ενδιαφέρον από κάθε μέρος της Γης πολλαπλασιαζόταν καθημερινά. Έτσι, οι επικεφαλής του εγχειρήματος αποφάσισαν να εξελίξουν το project και να το πάνε ένα βήμα παραπέρα… Η εξέλιξη του “This is Athens” δεν είναι άλλη από το “This is my Athens”. Μέσα από ένα ανοιχτό κάλεσμα, συγκεντρώνονται εκατοντάδες Αθηναίοι εθελοντές που παίρνουν τον ρόλο περιηγητή για τους τουρίστες που επισκέπτονται την πόλη τους. Η διαδικασία είναι απλή: ο τουρίστας μπαίνει στο site, επιλέγει την κατηγορία που ανταποκρίνεται στα ενδιαφέροντά του (τέχνη και πολιτισμός, νυχτερινή έξοδος, γαστρονομία, ιστορία, shopping κ.λπ.), οι υπεύθυνοι βρίσκουν τον εθελοντή που ανταποκρίνεται στις εκάστοτε ανάγκες και… η βόλτα ξεκινάει! Μιλάμε πάντα για βόλτα και ποτέ για ξενάγηση, αφού οι εθελοντές δεν εστιάζουν σε ιστορικές αναφορές και σε μνείες στην αρχαιότητα, παρά παίρνουν από το χέρι -κυριολεκτικά και μεταφορικά- τον τουρίστα και του συστήνουν τα αγαπημένα τους σημεία στην πόλη. In 2009, the Municipality of Athens created the “This is Athens” website. Athenian citizens have access to the site, and can upload photos of their city and write their own captions. The result was spectacular: the most charming facets of Athens formed a giant collage, and “clicks” exceeded every expectation, as interest from all over the world multiplied daily. Hence, the heads of the initiative decided to develop the project and move it one step forward… Thus, “This is Athens” became “This is my Athens”. Hundreds of volunteer Athenians responded to an open call inviting them to take on the role of a tour guide for visitors to their city. The process is simple: tourists enter the site, select a category that interests them (art and culture, nightlife, gastronomy, history, shopping, etc.) and the moderators find a volunteer that fits their needs and… the walk begins! It’s a walk and not a tour, as the volunteers do not focus on historical facts and ancient citations, but rather take the tourists by the hand -both literally and metaphorically- and show them their favourite places in the city, in much the same way as they would for one of their own guests. “It’s amazing how strongly Athenians feel about volunteering! For this project in particular, it seems that their desire to contribute stems from their love for their city and the need to share their joy with visitors from foreign cultures,” says Calliope Andriopoulou, the head of the project. He produced a fashion shoot at the age of 16, and got a job at Billy Bo, the most avant garde atelier in Athens. The talented, and then young, Mr Zoulias entered the fashion arena and forever changed the face of women’s magazines. Five years later, a degree in millinery from FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) as well as important collaborations with Eric Javitz and Liz Claiborne ensured she ranked among the most established artists in the world and the only one of her kind in Greece. εν χρειάζεται να ακούσεις το ελληνικότατο επίθετό του, για να καταλάβεις ότι ο Simon Kassianides είναι Έλληνας. Το παρουσιαστικό του προδίδει από μόνο του την καταγωγή του… Το κινητό του, δε, φιλοξενεί ελληνικές μουσικές επιτυχίες, από Μπιθικώτση μέχρι Αλεξίου. Νιώθετε Έλληνας; Ναι, απολύτως! Το όνομά μου, άλλωστε, είναι Κασσιανίδης. Είχα τη δυνατότητα να το αλλάξω, πολλές φορές, κατά τη διάρκεια της καριέρας μου, αλλά δεν το έκανα. Πώς διατηρείτε τη σχέση σας με την Ελλάδα; Έρχομαι κάθε καλοκαίρι στην Ελλάδα. Κάθε πρωί που ξυπνάω, ακούω ελληνική μουσική και συχνά μαγειρεύω ελληνικά φαγητά. Η γιαγιά μου μού έχει δώσει όλες τις μυστικές της συνταγές! Είναι αδύνατον να μη σχετίζομαι με αυτή τη χώρα. Αισθάνομαι Έλληνας και μεγάλωσα με ελληνικό τρόπο, μέσα σε μία οικογένεια με μεσογειακό ταμπεραμέντο, που ξεχείλιζε από πάθος! Τσακωνόμασταν με τους γείτονες, μιλούσαμε όλοι δυνατά και νιώθαμε πάντα «ζωντανοί». Ποια μέρη επισκέπτεστε στην Ελλάδα, όταν έρχεστε; Σίγουρα την Αθήνα, γιατί εδώ ζουν οι συγγενείς μου. Τα καλοκαίρια επισκέπτομαι την Τήνο, τη Μύκονο και την Πάρο. Μάλιστα, από την Τήνο και την Πάρο είναι και η καταγωγή μου. Αλλά αγαπώ πάρα πολύ την Αθήνα. Η Αθήνα είναι μεν μία μεγάλη πόλη, διατηρεί όμως ζεστασιά και αμεσότητα. Αυτό είναι μοναδικό. Επίσης, τη θεωρώ και πολύ όμορφη πόλη -είτε είσαι στο Μοναστηράκι, είτε στην Κηφισιά, είτε στη Βουλιαγμένη, είναι μαγικά! Ποιες συνεργασίες ξεχωρίζετε από όσες έχετε κάνει μέχρι στιγμής; Είναι δύο οι παράμετροι που επηρεάζουν αυτή την αξιολόγηση:

One doesn’t need to hear his “Greek-sounding” surname to come to the realisation that Simon Kassianides is Greek. His appearance alone betrays his origins… His mobile phone blasts Greek musical hits, from Bithikotsi to Alexiou. Do you feel Greek? Yes, absolutely! After all, my name is Kassianides. Although I’ve had several opportunities to change it throughout my career, I never did. How do you maintain your relationship with Greece? I visit Greece every summer. I wake up each morning to the sound of Greek music and I often cook Greek food at home. My grandmother has given me all her secret recipes! It’s impossible not to relate to this country. I feel Greek and was raised in the Greek way, in a family with a Mediterranean temperament, brimming with passion! We would argue with the neighbours, speak in loud voices and always felt “alive”. Which places do you like to visit in Greece? Definitely Athens, because I have relatives here. In summer, Tinos, Mykonos and Paros. I actually have roots in Tinos and Paros. But I really love Athens. Athens may be a big city, but it manages to retain a warmth and immediacy, which is unique. I also find it a very beautiful city - Monastiraki, Kifissia or Vouliagmeni, they are all magical! Which role stands out from your body of work so far? There are two things to consider: the people you meet and if you establish relationships with them, and the great “stops” in your career. I made lifetime friends on the television series “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” And

οι άνθρωποι που γνωρίζεις και δένεσαι μαζί τους, και οι μεγάλες «στάσεις» της καριέρας σου. Μέσα από την τηλεοπτική σειρά “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, έκανα φίλους ζωής. Όσον αφορά στις πιο σημαντικές συνεργασίες για την καριέρα μου, η συμμετοχή μου στην ταινία του James Bond “Quantum of Solace”, ήταν πολύ σημαντική, όπως και ο ρόλος μου στην ταινία “Unforgettable”, που θα προβληθεί μέσα στο 2016. Όσον αφορά στο “Unforgettable”, είναι η πρώτη φορά που πρωταγωνιστώ σε μία μεγάλη κινηματογραφική παραγωγή, κάτι πολύ σημαντικό για μένα. Όμως, ας μην παραλείψω και τη σειρά How to Get Away with Murder, που έγινε τόσο δημοφιλής, ώστε να με αναγνωρίζουν διεθνώς! Γεγονός, βέβαια, λίγο παράξενο, ειδικά όταν το βιώνεις πρώτη φορά. Βρίσκεστε στην Ελλάδα προσκεκλημένος της Wind Running Τeam, για να τρέξετε στον Μαραθώνιο της Αθήνας ως πρεσβευτής της MDA HELLAS. Μιλήστε μου λίγο γι’ αυτό. Είναι μία πολύ τιμητική πρόσκληση για μένα. Γενικά, όταν μπορώ να συμμετέχω σε οποιαδήποτε ελληνική διοργάνωση και να διαφημίζω τη χώρα μου, το κάνω χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη. Όπως σας είπα, θεωρώ ότι η Ελλάδα, τώρα, μας χρειάζεται περισσότερο από ποτέ. Και έχω ακόμα πολλά να κάνω εδώ. Σχεδιάζω να έρθω πολλές φορές στο προσεχές μέλλον για διάφορα projects. Σας ενδιαφέρει ο εθελοντισμός γενικότερα; Δεν το έχω σκεφτεί συνολικά. Τώρα, μου πρότειναν να συμμετάσχω σ’ αυτή τη διοργάνωση και σε μία χρονική στιγμή που η Ελλάδα διανύει μία κρίσιμη φάση και το έκανα. Είναι ωραίο να προσφέρεις και να βοηθάς, οπότε ενδεχομένως να το έκανα πάλι.

as for important collaborations in my career, my participation in James Bond’s “Quantum of Solace” was very significant, as was my role in the upcoming feature film “Unforgettable”, which will be released in 2016. “Unforgettable” marked my first starring role in a cinematic production and was very important to me. But I must also mention the television series “How to Get Away with Murder”, which was such a massive success that I am now recognised all over the world! It’s a surreal experience, especially the first time it happens.
You are in Greece as a guest of the Wind Running Team, to participate in the Athens Marathon as an ambassador for MDA Hellas. Can you tell us about that? It is an honour to have been invited. As a rule, when I am able to participate in a Greek event and promote my country, I do it without giving it a second thought. I believe that Greece needs us now more than ever. And I can do a lot more here. I’m planning to visit several times in the near future for various projects. Are you interested in volunteering in general? I haven’t really thought about it. The proposal to participate in this event came at a critical time for Greece and I agreed. It’s rewarding to offer assistance and help, however, so I would consider doing so again.

εν μπορείς εύκολα να πεις ποια από τις δύο είναι πιο όμορφη… Μπορείς, όμως, να αναγνωρίσεις και στις δύο, δυναμισμό, στυλ και αγάπη για την καλή ζωή, αλλά και τον θαυμασμό που τρέφει η μία για την άλλη. Η υπερδραστήρια Ναταλία Δραγούμη, αυτόν τον καιρό, πρωταγωνιστεί στην κωμωδία του Χαλ Σάλγουεν, «Αναμείνατε στο ακουστικό σας» στο Θέατρο Ακάδημος και στην κινηματογραφική ταινία «Mαριονέτες» του Παντελή Καλατζή. Η Κάτια Δημοπούλου, ως πρώην διευθύντρια κάποιων από τους μεγαλύτερους, διεθνείς τίτλους γυναικείων περιοδικών στην Ελλάδα, γνωρίζει καλά τι σημαίνει αληθινό στυλ και μόδα με ουσία. Μετά από μεγάλη απουσία και ακόμη μεγαλύτερη περισυλλογή, αποφάσισε να δημιουργήσει την εντυπωσιακή συλλογή από φουλάρια Peplos, αποτυπώνοντας στα μεταξωτά της μαντίλια τα πιο όμορφα κυκλαδίτικα ηλιοβασιλέματα. Πώς ξεκίνησε αυτή η φιλία; Ναταλία Δραγούμη: Γνωριστήκαμε μέσω του Διονύση Φωτόπουλου, το 1991. Τότε, τελείωνα τη σχολή μου και πήγα μαζί με τον Διονύση να παρακολουθήσω κάποια γυρίσματα στη Μόσχα και να κάνω μία φωτογράφιση με τον Τάκη Διαμαντόπουλο. Στο αεροπλάνο, λοιπόν, συνάντησα μία πολύ όμορφη γυναίκα, με την οποία συνδεθήκαμε αμέσως. Ήταν η Κάτια, διευθύντρια περιοδικού τότε, η οποία βρισκόταν εκεί για αυτή τη φωτογράφηση. Κάτια Δημοπούλου: Έπειτα βέβαια από αυτό το ταξίδι, η σχέση μας γινόταν όλο και πιο δυνατή, δενόμασταν σιγά σιγά, συναντιόμασταν σε παραστάσεις και σε πρεμιέρες αρκετά συχνά και χτίζαμε μία βάσιμη σχέση. Όταν εκείνη έμεινε έγκυος στην κόρη της, την Κλειώ -της οποίας εγώ βρήκα το όνομα-, έγινα και η νονά!

It is impossible to say which of the two women is more beautiful… You can, however, easily recognise their energy, style and love for the good life, as well as the respect they have for one another. Natalia Dragoumi, as active as ever, is currently starring in Hal Salwen’s comedy “Denise Calls Up” at the Akadimos Theatre and can also be seen in the film “Marionettes” by Pantelis Kalantzis. As the former Editor-inChief of some of the largest international fashion publications in Greece, Katia Dimopoulou, is well versed in style and fashion with substance. After a lengthy break and even longer period of contemplation, she decided to found Peplos, an impressive scarf collection depicting the most beautiful Cycladic sunsets. When did you first become friends? Natalia Dragoumi: We were introduced by Dionysis Fotopoulos in 1991. At the time, I was at the end of my studies, and I went to Moscow with Dionysis to watch some filming and take part in a photo shoot with Takis Diamantopoulos. On the airplane, I met a gorgeous woman and we hit it off immediately. It was Katia, Editor-in-Chief of the magazine, who was also going to Moscow for the shoot. Katia Dimopoulou: After the trip our friendship bloomed, we slowly became closer and closer, often meeting at shows and premieres, and together we built a deep relationship. When Natalia was pregnant with her daughter Cleo, I came up with the name, and then became her godmother!

Πώς προέκυψε η ιδέα για τα φουλάρια PEPLOS; Κ.Δ.: Αφότου «τελείωσα» με τα περιοδικά, άρχισα να ψάχνω το digital printing, μελετώντας και τις συλλογές της Mary Katrantzou, που το χρησιμοποιούσε για τη δημιουργία των υπέροχων υφασμάτων της. To έψαξα πολύ και σκέφτηκα ότι θα μπορούσα να αποτυπώσω πάνω σε ποιοτικά υφάσματα ό,τι ονειρευόμουν να κάνω σε σελίδες περιοδικού. Γιατί να μη γίνει «σελίδα μου», ένα ολομέταξο φουλάρι; Την αρχική ιδέα φωτογράφισε ο Τάσος Βρεττός, με στόχο την απαθανάτιση της έμπνευσης κάθε συλλογής, όπως, για παράδειγμα, τα ηλιοβασιλέματα. Εκτός όλων τούτων, μου αρέσει πολύ να φοράω φουλάρια. Η κόρη σας, Melia Kreiling, κάνει τα πρώτα σημαντικά βήματα στο Χόλιγουντ. Πώς ξεκίνησαν όλα; Κ.Δ.: Η Melia χόρευε από μικρή και αυτό ήθελε να κάνει και επαγγελματικά. Πήγε στην Αγγλία, πήρε πτυχία χορού, όμως απελπίστηκε όταν χτύπησε το πόδι της και συνειδητοποίησε πως δεν θα μπορούσε να χορεύει όπως ήθελε. Ετσι, ο φίλος μου και φωτογράφος Τάσος Βρεττός και εγώ την «πιέσαμε» να ασχοληθεί με το θέατρο. Τελικά, το ακολούθησε, αρχικά στο Λονδίνο και έπειτα στην Αμερική. Βρήκε ατζέντη, έφτιαξε το showreel της και έκανε την πρώτη της δουλειά στη σειρά εποχής «Βοργίες» καθώς και την πρώτη της ταινία «Οι Φύλακες του Γαλαξία». Τώρα ζει μόνιμα στο Λος Άντζελες. Εσείς, κυρία Δραγούμη, αγαπάτε πολύ αυτό που κάνετε. Τι σας έλκει περισσότερο στο επάγγελμα του ηθοποιού; Ν.Δ.: Οι συναντήσεις με τους άλλους ανθρώπους πίσω από τα φώτα και η γλυκιά συνωμοσία του θεάτρου. Ένα βλέμμα στη σκηνή που είναι δικό μας, ένα άγγιγμα και αυτές οι βραχυπρόθεσμες σχέσεις που αναπτύσσονται στο θέατρο, δεν κρατάνε πολύ, αλλά είναι πάρα πολύ έντονες. Τι σας έχει μάθει το θέατρο; Ν.Δ.: Με έχει μάθει ότι κάθε μέρα έχω να παλέψω με κάτι. Με τους εσωτερικούς μου εχθρούς, που πρέπει να εξολοθρεύσω για να πάω μπροστά, με τα εμπόδια που μου βάζει ο ίδιος μου ο εαυτός, τα οποία πρέπει να ξεπεράσω και με εξελίσσουν σαν άνθρωπο. Τι θα θέλατε να κάνετε στο θέατρο που δεν έχετε κάνει ακόμα; Ν.Δ.: Θα ήθελα πολύ να παίξω Τσέχωφ. Έχω παίξει ήδη σε τρία έργα του, αλλά θα ήθελα να συμμετάσχω και σε άλλα, και μάλιστα εποχής -όχι στη σύγχρονη εκδοχή τους. Μεγαλώνοντας, θέλω να γίνομαι πιο «κλασική», κάτι που δεν θα διενοούμην παλαιότερα. Ήμουν η πρώτη οπαδός της αποδόμησης των θεατρικών έργων, όμως τώρα θέλω το κλασικό, όπως νοσταλγώ… το πατροπαράδοτο φαγητό της μαμάς μου. Ποιο είναι το αγαπημένο σας σημείο στην πόλη; Κ.Δ.: Η Ακρόπολη! Μου αρέσει όμως και η βόλτα στη Βαρβάκειο αγορά, στην οποία πηγαίνω κάθε Σάββατο. Ν.Δ.: Εγώ αγαπώ πολύ το κέντρο, ιδιαίτερα το Κολωνάκι. Πρόκληση για κάθε επισκέπτη πιστεύω πως είναι να αισθανθεί αυτό το νοσταλγικό allure της πόλης.
How did you come up with the idea of PEPLOS scarves? K.D.: When I “finished” with magazines, I began to look into digital printing, studying the collections of Mary Katrantzou, who used it to create her amazing fabrics. I researched it thoroughly and thought I could capture the images I dreamt of for the pages of magazines on fabric. Why not make a silk scarf “my page”? Tassos Vrettos photographed the initial idea, with the aim to capture the inspiration behind each collection, for example sunsets. And I also love wearing scarves. Your daughter, Melia Kreiling, is taking her first steps in Hollywood. How did it all begin? K.D.: Melia has been dancing since she was a little girl and wanted to become a dancer. She went to England, got a degree in dance, but became frustrated when she injured her leg and realised that she wasn’t able to dance the way she wanted to. My friend, photographer Tassos Vrettos and I “persuaded” her to turn to theatre. In the end, she did, initially in London and later in America. She found an agent, shot a showreel and got a role in the period television show “The Borgias” and in the film “Guardians of the Galaxy”. She has now settled in Los Angeles. And you, Mrs Dragoumi, love what you do. What is it that attracts you to acting? N.D.: Meeting the people behind the lights, and the delightful collusion of theatre. Exchanging a look on stage that has meaning, a touch, and the short-term relationships that develop in theatre, which are intense, even though they may not last long. What have you learned from the theatre? N.D.: It has taught me that I have something to fight with every day -with my internal demons, which I must vanquish in order to move forward, the barriers I myself put up, that I must overcome and that help me evolve as a person. Is there anything you would like to do in the theatre that you haven’t done yet? N.D.: I’d really like to do another Chekhov play. I’ve already done three, but I would still like to do more, and in their original form -not just the modern versions. As I mature, I hope to become a more “classical” actress, something I never even dreamed of when I was younger. I was a staunch supporter of the modification of theatrical plays, but I now yearn for the classical, in much the same way as I yearn for… my mother’s traditional cooking. What is your favourite place in Athens? K.D.: The Acropolis! I also like walking in the Varvakeio market every Saturday. N.D.: I adore the centre, particularly Kolonaki. ν βρεθεί κάποιος στη συνοικία του Ψυρρή και περάσει από την οδό Αριστοφάνους, αποκλείεται να μην παρατηρήσει το μικρό μαγαζί «Joanna», που βρίσκεται στον αριθμό 14. Αυτό το κατάστημα μοιάζει να έχει προσγειωθεί εδώ από μία άλλη εποχή. Ροζ κορδέλες, άρωμα δέρματος και φουντωτές τουτού, θα καλωσορίσουν αμέσως το βλέμμα κάθε περαστικού σ’ έναν κόσμο καλλιτεχνικό, μποέμ, ρομαντικό. Σ’ έναν κόσμο αφιερωμένο στον χορό. Η ιδιοκτήτρια, Τζοάνα Αλιφραγκή, πριν από 40 χρόνια, με πρώτο μοντέλο μία φίλη χορεύτρια, άρχισε να δημιουργεί παπούτσια με οδηγό το πέλμα της. Παπούτσια μαλακά, βολικά, ανθεκτικά. Το εγχείρημα πέτυχε. Σήμερα, το κατάστημα «Joanna» είναι το μοναδικό στην Ελλάδα που κατασκευάζει ακόμη χειροποίητα παπούτσια για χορό. «Αυτό που μας έδωσε σπουδαίες συνεργασίες και μας καθιέρωσε ως αναγκαία “στάση” για κάθε χορευτή είναι η ποιότητα της κατασκευής μας. Το κάθε προϊόν μας δημιουργείται κομμάτι κομμάτι από τα χέρια μας και πολλές φορές προσπαθούμε να προσαρμόζουμε το κάθε παπούτσι στον σωματότυπο και στις ιδιαιτερότητες του πέλματος κάθε πελάτη. Επιπλέον, χρησιμοποιούμε αποκλειστικά γνήσιο δέρμα από κατσίκι». Κάποτε η αείμνηστη χορεύτρια Δώρα Στράτου ενθάρρυνε την Τζοάνα να αρχίσει να δημιουργεί και άλλων ειδών παπούτσια, εκτός από κλασσικού χορού. Πράγματι, σήμερα, εκτός από παπούτσια μπαλέτου, στο κατάστημα «Joanna» βρίσκουμε και παπούτσια για όλα τα είδη χορού και άσκησης (λάτιν, τανγκό, ενόργανης γυμναστικής κ.λπ.), όλα τα ρούχα και κοστούμια χορού και θεάτρου και, κατόπιν παραγγελίας, παπούτσια δρόμου -κανονικής ή ειδικής κατασκευής για προβληματικά πόδια. Όπως μας είπε και η Τζοάνα Αλιφραγκή, δίνοντας τον πιο εύστοχο επίλογο: «Εμένα αυτό που μου δίνει ικανοποίηση είναι να αντιμετωπίζω καθετί που φτιάχνω σαν ένα μικρό έργο τέχνης». Those finding themselves in the Psyrri district, wandering along Aristofanous St., are sure to catch sight of a small shop called “Joanna” at number 14. This store seems to belong to another era. Pink ribbons, the aroma of leather and poufy tutus draw the attention of passers-by to a bohemian, artistic and romantic world. A world dedicated to dance. Joanna Αlifragi’s first model 40 years ago, was one of her dancer friends, and she started making shoes to fit the sole of her foot. Soft, comfortable and durable shoes. The effort paid off in spades. Today, “Joanna” is the only shop in Greece to produce hand-made shoes for dancers, and the most important dancers from all over the country go there to find what they need. “It is the quality of our production process that helped us establish these important partnerships and ensures that our little shop is a “muststop” for every dancer. All our products are created piece by piece by our hands, and we often try to customise each shoe to the body type and unique character of the sole of each customer. Moreover, we only use genuine kid leather.” Dora Stratou, the extraordinary dancer, once encouraged Joanna to branch out into other shoes, apart from those worn in classical dance. Today, in addition to ballet shoes, “Joanna” also offers all kinds of dance shoes (latin, tango, rhythmic gymnastics, etc.), clothes and costumes for dance and theatre, as well as street shoes, upon request, to fit regular and problem feet. “What gives me satisfaction is approaching everything I make as if it is a little work of art,” says Joanna Alifragi. ΕΥΡΥΤΑΝΙΑ Η Ευρυτανία είναι η ορεινότερη περιοχή της Ελλάδας, δεν στερείται, όμως, των υποδομών που την καθιστούν δημοφιλέστατο χειμερινό προορισμό. ZAGOROCHORIA Famous for their unique architecture, the villages of Zagorochoria are hidden gems tucked in the natural wonder known as the Vikos-Aoos National Park. ΟΡΕΙΝΗ ΑΡΚΑΔΙΑ Στα δυσπρόσιτα κι απόμακρα χωριά γύρω από το Μαίναλο, το τοπίο εξακολουθεί να είναι τραχύ και αδάμαστο και τα ιστορικά χωριά πανέμορφα και αρχιτεκτονικά αντάξια του μεγαλείου της φύσης που τα περιβάλλει. Δείτε τα θαυμάσια διατηρημένα ιστορικά χωριά της Αρκαδίας. Καρύταινα: Ο διατηρητέος οικισμός που αποτέλεσε για χρόνια ένα από τα ορμητήρια των επαναστατικών αγώνων του 1821. Το φράγκικο κάστρο του 1245 δεσπόζει πάνω από το χωριό και χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως αρχηγείο από τον Θεόδωρο Κολοκοτρώνη. Στεμνίτσα: Από τους σημαντικότερους παραδοσιακούς οικισμούς της Πελοποννήσου, η Στεμνίτσα βρίσκεται σε υψόμετρο 1.050 μ. και αντανακλά την άνθηση που γνώρισε ως κέντρο αργυροχρυσοχοΐας, τα χρόνια της τουρκοκρατίας έως τις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα. Δημητσάνα: Γνωστή και ως «μπαρουτομάνα» του 1821, αφού οι νερόμυλοί της μετατράπηκαν σε μπαρουτόμυλους για τις ανάγκες του Aγώνα, η Δημητσάνα υπερηφανεύεται για την ιστορία της, τη μοναδική αρχιτεκτονική και την ηρωική ατμόσφαιρα που αποπνέει.
Monastery built on a steep slope. The tiny village of Fidakia boasts an amazing view over Kremasta Lake, and from there, only 4x4 vehicles can make the drive towards Trikerioti and the exceptionally beautiful artificial lake. LAKE PLASTIRA Although Lake Plastira is an artificial lake, it has claimed the title of the most charming lake in Greece. The lakeside grasslands, vegetation, surrounding forests and the snow-covered peaks of Mount Agrafa reflecting in the water, compose a unique mountain scene. A drive around Lake Plastira (about 60 km, map required) is a feast for the eyes. The villages of Neraida and Belokomitis are considered the most beautiful “balconies” with a view. Take the opportunity to gaze upon the lake from the back of a horse, on a mountain bike or even from “the inside” while paddling a canoe. MOUNTAINOUS ARKADIA Most of its regeneration took place in the remote and inaccessible villages scattered over Mount Mainalo. The region, which has always supported the national liberation philosophy, remains rough and untamed and its historic villages are beautiful and architecturally worthy of the grandeur of the surrounding natural environment. Be sure to visit the wonderfully preserved historic villages of Arkadia. Karytaina: The listed settlement was one of the bases for the revolutionary struggle of 1821. The Frankish castle dating from 1245 towers over the village and was used as headquarters by Theodoros Kolokotronis. Stemnitsa: One of the most important traditional settlements of the Peloponnese, Stemnitsa is located at an altitude of 1,050 metres and was a booming centre for silversmiths from the years of the Turkish occupation through the early 20th century. Dimitsana: Known as the “baroutomana” of 1821, the watermills of Dimitsana were converted into gunpowder mills for the Revolution and the village is proud of its history, unique architecture and the heroic atmosphere it continues to exude.

Written in 1901, at the turn of the 20th century, the play is about expectation. The playwright characterises it as a “comedy” and brings each character face to face with their hopes, worries and the reality of a merciless time. The exiled heroines live within the confines of a narrow family unit, keeping the hope alive that they will return to Moscow, the ideal city of their childhood, without any effort on their part.

In October, the Hilton Athens turned… pink and was transformed into a symbol of hope, as it joined the Global Landmark Illuminations Initiative organised by Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. The illumination was announced by Ms Eleni Menegaki, Ambassador of the Estée Lauder Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. Guests at the impressive ceremony were given the opportunity to support the Scientific Society Mastologiki Healing Support (EMEIS), the only non-profit organisation in Greece that supports the treatment of breast cancer patients from financially vulnerable social groups. Στο Βazaar διατέθηκαν επώνυμα έργα τέχνης για την ενίσχυση της «Πνοής», του μη κερδοσκοπικού σωματείου, μέλους της ένωσης «Μαζί για το Παιδί», που μεταξύ άλλων έχει ως στόχο τη δημιουργία Μονάδων Εντατικής Θεραπείας Παιδιών στα Κρατικά Νοσοκομεία και τη δωρεά ιατρικών μηχανημάτων στις Μονάδες Εντατικής Θεραπείας Παίδων σε όλη την Ελλάδα. The proceeds of the signed artwork sold at the Bazaar were donated to “PNOE” - Friends of Children in Intensive Care, a non-profit organisation and member of the “Together for Children” Association, whose activities include the creation of Paediatric Intensive Care Units in State Hospitals and the donation of medical equipment to Paediatric Intensive Care Units throughout Greece.
