πό το 2005 και το “Destroy Athens”, η Μπιενάλε της Αθήνας, έχει καταφέρει να καθιερωθεί ως ο μεγαλύτερος ανεξάρτητος θεσμός σύγχρονης τέχνης στην Ελλάδα, για την έντονη και προκλητική τέχνη που παρουσιάζει σε κάθε διοργάνωση, αλλά και για τους χώρους που ανοίγει για πρώτη φορά στο κοινό, οι οποίοι, στις περισσότερες περιπτώσεις, αναδεικνύονται σε τοπόσημα της πόλης και αποκτούν νέα ζωή και ποικίλες χρήσεις. Χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα στο παρελθόν έχουν υπάρξει η Διπλάρειος Σχολή στην πλατεία Θεάτρου, το παλιό Χρηματιστήριο στην οδό Σοφοκλέους και το ξενοδοχείο Μπάγκειον στην Ομόνοια.
Since 2005 and the exhibition ‘Destroy Athens’, the Athens Biennale, has become established as the biggest independent institution of modern art in Greece, both for the powerful and provocative art it presents and for the venues it employs. Sites and buildings which had fallen out of use are once again brought to the public and –more often than not– evolve into landmarks of the city, embarking on a new life and acquiring alternative uses. The Diplareios School on Theatrou Square, the old Stock Exchange on Sofokleous Street and the Bankeion Hotel on Omonia Square are three typical examples of buildings which have been reactivated.
Στη φετινή, 6η της διοργάνωση η Μπιενάλε της Αθήνας ασχολείται με ένα προκλητικό θέμα. Τίτλος της είναι «ΑΝΤΙ» και θέμα της οι ΑΝΤΙθέσεις, συγκρούσεις, ΑΝΤΙπαραθέσεις σε κάθε πτυχή της δημόσιας και προσωπικής ζωής. Οι επιμελητές της έκθεσης Stefanie Hessler, Poka-Yio και Κωστής Σταφυλάκης επέλεξαν περίπου 100 καλλιτέχνες από την Ελλάδα και όλο τον κόσμο, οι οποίοι παρουσιάζουν ένα «διακριτό, ιδιοσυγκρασιακό και άβολο screenshot του πολιτικού, κοινωνικού και πολιτιστικού momentum». Όπως εξηγούν, κάθε πεδίο της δημόσιας ζωής φαίνεται να διαπερνά σήμερα μια διάθεση εναντίωσης, μια ANTI-συμπεριφορά. Αυτή η (ΑΝΤΙ)συμπεριφορά χαρακτηρίζει όλες τις αρένες της κοινωνικής ζωής, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των πολιτισμικών εκφράσεων, της πολιτικής της ταυτότητας, της καλλιτεχνικής εργασίας, των ΜΜΕ, των social media, αλλά ακόμη και των βιντεοπαιχνιδιών και της βιομηχανίας των μουσικών video. Αυτό που, με άλλα λόγια, επικρατεί, είναι ότι συμπεριφορές εναντίωσης και μη-συμμόρφωσης κανονικοποιούνται και εμπορευματοποιούνται αστραπιαία.
The 6th Athens Biennale flirts –once again– with a provocative theme. Under the title ‘ANTI’, the exhibition deals with contrast, conflict and confrontation in all aspects of public and private life. Curators Stefanie Hessler, Poka-Yio and Kostis Stafylakis have selected about 100 artists from Greece and many countries round the globe, inviting them to present ‘a distinctive, idiosyncratic and uncomfortable screenshot of the political, social and cultural momentum’. Today, as the curators explain, every aspect of public life seems to be charged with an attitude of opposition or ‘ANTI’. This ANTIstance can be seen in all arenas and facets of social activity: cultural expression, identity politics, the arts, Mass Media and social media, videogames and the music video industry. What prevails, in other words, is the almost instant normalization and commercialization of opposition and non-conformity attitudes.
Οι επιμελητές και οι καλλιτέχνες του «ΑΝΤΙ» έχουν στήσει την έκθεση επινοώντας επιβλητικές πραγματικότητες, παραλλαγές χώρων της καθημερινής ζωής: από το γυμναστήριο μέχρι το εμπορικό κέντρο, από τα φόρουμ στο διαδίκτυο, μέχρι το γραφείο και το πολιτικό μέτωπο. Με αυτό τον τρόπο, η έκθεση προσφέρει μια εμπειρία που διαφοροποιείται από τον οικείο σχεδιασμό μιας έκθεσης τέχνης.

The curators and artists of ‘ANTI’ have set up the exhibition by inventing imposing realities and variations of everyday life actual domains: the gym, the shopping mall, the online forum, the office, the political front. ‘ANTI’ thus offers an experience which is quite different from the standard art exhibition setting.
