BISHOP JOSEPH

ALEXANDER ZONICLE, J.P.

August 31, 1919 - February 4, 2022

Imet Joe in the summer of 1947, at my Aunty Ellen’s house while visiting from Hatchet Bay Eleuthera. I was accompanying my mother to Nassau to see the doctor. Joe used to come up to Aunty Ellen to study his architectural correspondence course. He was also learning carpentry from Aunty Ellen’s nephew Cody Ferguson.

I recall missing the mailboat travelling back to Hatchet Bay Eleuthera. After I missed the boat and went back to Auntie Ellen’s house I heard a band out on East Street. I ran toward it. Running after the band caused me to break the latch on one of my shoes. When I returned to my Aunt Ellen’s yard Joe was there and he asked me if he could fix my shoe. From that moment on I was drawn toward him. When I finally got on a boat back to Eleuthera I opened a paper bag that Joe had placed in my hand. When I found a box of chocolates in it, my affection for him grew.

Joe began to write to me regularly. At first I did not know how to write a letter, having had to leave school at an early age, because my mother was sick and being the oldest daughter of my parents I had to take care of her. Joe mailed me a book on how to write letters. A few months later he wrote to my Daddy asking him if he could get engaged to me. My Daddy gave his consent and Joe set a date and made all the wedding arrangements. All I had to do was come down on the mailboat with my suitcase. He had already purchased the property on Mt. Royal Avenue from all the money he had saved from working on “The Contract”.

Joe was a good provider. He took good care of me and the children. He never wanted me to work. For 73 years he was by my side and loved me more than he loved himself. His passing has left me with a great emptiness that I cannot express. But knowing that he is with our Lord and knowing that one day I will see him again, brings me some comfort.

“I Owe It All To You (Stella)”
Bishop Joseph Alexander Zonicle, J.P.

The meek, God’s redeemed people are going to inherit the earth, after it’s purification when sin, Satan and all his followers are put in hell for eternity, all of God’s children are going to have equal access to a recreated earth forever and forever. So I want all of my children and all of my friends, my in laws and everybody I meet to be a part of that glorious eternal age. That’s the reason why I have to preach the gospel to everybody I meet everyday! That’s what the lord wills for us. Right now concerning this earth right now, the bible says we brought nothing into it and it’s certain we will take nothing out. So our hope should be pinned on eternity for all eternity.”

‘THE CONTRACT’ AND STUDYING ARCHITECTURE

“All the young men in America went to the war and there was a lack of labour in the farms and factories and at the time the Duke of Windsor arranged for workers in the Caribbean to come to the States on contract to work and so I and my brother decided to go on the contract and at that time I was a young carpenter. I went on the contract, and I met a friend who I had known in Nassau before and while we were out there on the contract, this friend said to me, “Zonicle you know, you can become an architect.” I said, “what you talking about? An architect?” He said, “you are a carpenter. You are on the road already.” I said, “Bernard, I don’t understand that.” He said, “all you have to do is . . . enroll in architecture to the American School in Chicago. That’s all you got to do. Send an application stating what you want to do and then they will look at it and if they are satisfied with your application, they will accept you. And they will send you an acceptance.” I did that and in a couple weeks I had received that I was qualified to enroll for architecture and so I began. . . . And when I sent in my first examination . . . 100%. That’s right, and about two years later my contract was up and so I went back home with all my lessons and equipment.”

Obituary

BISHOP JOSEPH ALEXANDER ZONICLE JP YAHWEH’S TRIBUTE

As Pastor Joseph Alexander Zonicle was born, on the 31st July, though 31st of August is recorded 1919, in Port Howe, San Salvador Island, the original landfall of Christopher Columbus in 1492, now called Cat Island. He is the fifth child of Charles B. and Ruth Zonicle.

He received his formative education at the All-Age Public School at Port Howe, where he became a Monitor at the age of fourteen (14).

At the age of sixteen (16), in 1943, he settled in Nassau, where he was able to fulfill the dream of his Mother to learn a Trade, training as an apprentice to the then premier Carpenter on the Island of New Providence. He excelled as a Carpenter, creating furniture for many notable Bahamian Families.

He was also a member of The Carpenters’ Union, and became its President. As President, he shared his vision to move the Labour Struggle forward by capitalizing upon the gains of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and the return of a legally trained ‘firebrand’ for Labour Rights in the person of the late Sir Randol Fawkes, who had been exposed to the American Civil Rights Movement, via amalgamation of all existing Unions into one Federation, and, to have Lawyer Fawkes as its President. This was the birth of the Bahamas Federation of Labour. He became its first Secretary General.

The Bahamas Federation of Labour was thus, one of the founding, and, catalytic, national, civil rights movements that led to Majority Rule.

In his capacity as Secretary General of The Bahamas Federation of Labour, Pastor Zonicle not only worked side by side with, but was also, the inspirational confidant of Sir Randol Fawkes. Together, with others, they agitated for Majority Rule in The Bahamas. He is considered an Un-sung Hero of the Movement.

During World War II, Pastor Zonicle was among those Bahamians who took advantage of the Agricultural

Contract by which the British Government gave additional support to the United States’ War efforts, through the growing of food in Florida. His exposure to the magnificent homes in Florida motivated him to pursue Correspondence Training as an Architect at The American School of Architecture of the University of Chicago. Although family commitments prevented him from sitting his Final Examination to be certified as an Architect, he has drawn approved plans for many homes in The Bahamas, as well as built and oversaw the construction of homes, and, major commercial projects.

During his early thirties, Pastor Zonicle decided to devote himself to the Call of Almighty God, on his life, received at the age of eighteen (18) years, in the historic Zion Baptist Church, East and Shirley Streets.

He was among the first Graduates in Theology at the Bahamas Baptist Bible Institute. After serving for many years as a Deacon in the Zion Baptist Church, he became a Founding Member of the Central Baptist Church, initially a Foreign Missions outreach of the Southern Baptist Convention, from which Church he was ordained in the early 1960’s, and, on 1964, became the Pastor of one of the Missions planted by this Church, the Providence Baptist Church (Ecclesia) on Robinson Road.

Pastor Zonicle also served as a Labor Officer with the Department of Labour, Government of The Bahamas, for over ten years, during which period he had the privilege and satisfaction of administering The Fair Labour Standards Act, The Bahamas’ First Labour Legislation, which he and others had achieved for the Nation.

Pastor Zonicle has been married to the beautiful Mrs. Estella Louise Zonicle, nee Belle of Hatchet Bay, Eleuthera, for the past seventy-four (74) years, as of June, 2022. They have one Son (deceased), and, twelve (12) professionally trained Daughters.

Pastor Zonicle received on the 25th October 2021, an “Award of Appreciation” for “long and dedicated service” from The National Association of Justices of the Peace.

Interested always in the development, especially spiritually and academically, of his Progeny, Pastor Zonicle and Mrs. Zonicle attended, in Atlanta Georgia, USA, the Graduation Ceremony of their Granddaughter, Niké Gardiner, May 4, 2019, who attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Management, from Clayton State University.

At the age of one hundred, he gave away in marriage his third Daughter, Josephine, to Mr. Manuel Lopes, on the 19th of November, 2021.

He Blessed his latest Great Grandchild, Laia Neymour, at the age of three weeks, on 26th November, 2021.

Pastor Zonicle loved reading and gardening.

However, his greatest, never diminished passion, was Evangelism, which he always pursued boldly, with all he came into contact, whatever their status or station, and, without fear or favour.

Pastor Zonicle went ‘Home’ to be with Lord on the morning of 4th February, 2022.

Joseph [ joh-zuhf, -suhf ] May Jehovah add/give increase.

THE NAME ‘ZONICLE’

Now about the name Zonicle: during the revolution of America against Great Britain, my grandfather and two of his brothers . . . left eastern Europe before the revolution and they travelled to America and when America and Britain went to war they decided to be loyal to King George; so they left America to go to a country that was subject to England. In the process, having left America, they were shipwrecked off the coast of Ragged Island . . . .

When I was a little boy, when I first start school and I was able to read, my Dad and everybody else was spelling their name ‘Z-a-n-i-c-a-l’. That’s the way that Dad and everybody else who knew him was spelling his surname. But as a little boy six years of age or seven, six-and-a-half when I begin to learn to read, the sixth child of my father’s family, I became disenchanted with ‘Z-a-n-i-c-a-l’. I didn’t like it, ‘Zanical’. I didn’t like it and I decided to redo it and put in some letters ‘Z-o-n-i-c-l-e’. It sound smoother. . . . It was of the Lord but I didn’t know. It’s true. So, when I start spelling my name as a little boy Joseph Alexander Z-o-n-i-c-l-e, all my brothers, my three oldest sisters and my oldest brothers after me, they do the same thing. Sound smoother. And after we all begin to do it my Mom began to do it also. She was Mary Zanical. I thought I had done something strange. I thought so. I thought it was me, but it wasn’t me. It was God. You know how I know? Because when my last brother Charles Zonicle died in December of 2014, I went to his funeral in Cat Island and when I was there his son said to me, “Uncle, I want to show you something.” And he was still working as a policeman but he was transferred to some part of the Registry in Nassau. That’s where he was working and he had access to records. And he said, “Uncle I want to show you something.” He brought me a record of my grandfather’s marriage. And guess how the name was spelled: Z-o-n-ic-l-e. Isn’t that awesome. It was God doing it.

SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE AND INITIAL CALL

[T]he Lord gave me an experience on the 24th day of December 2014, that I never dreamed of, never hoped to see . . . . That day I went out of the bedroom and I sat in the middle of the sitting room lying on the couch, and my feet was up on the chair and I went fast to sleep. And then I heard a thump on the top of the chair where my feet was resting and I awake and I saw a person this size, tall as those branches up there and the beauty of the clothing of that person, I cannot describe it. And I’ve never heard of such a thing before in my life. . . . [The Lord] gave me that vision. A open eye vision. I wasn’t sleeping. My eyes were wide open after I was awakened, yeah and before I could say or anything. I don’t understand it. It encourage[d] me to be more focused on my calling . . . . [A]s a young person, probably around eighteen or seventeen-and-a-half thereabouts, I was in a service one night at Zion Baptist Church on Shirley Street because that was the church fellowship I worship as a boy. I was connected to that so when I moved to Nassau in 1936 that’s where I went. And one night a preacher from Tennessee was preaching and at the end of his sermon he gave an invitation to anyone in the service who feel led to give their lives in service to preach the Gospel come forward and I looked around, I didn’t see anybody coming forward and so I decided well it’s an invitation to whosoever so I’m going forward. I went forward and the minister asked me what was my coming, what the purpose. I said I come as you indicated to dedicate my life to the Lord to preach the Gospel. And he prayed for me and that was the first vow I made to the Lord.

OPENING SONG

How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder, Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

(Chorus)

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander, And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

And when I think of Go d his son not sparing Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in; That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation, And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart. Then I shall bow, in humble adoration, And then proclaim: “My God, how great Thou art!”

CELEBRATORY SONG

Marching To Zion

Come, we that love the Lord, And let our joys be known; Join in a song with sweet accord, And thus surround the throne.

(Chorus)

We’re marching to Zion, Beautiful, beautiful Zion; We’re marching upward to Zion, The beautiful city of God.

The sorrows of the mind Be banished from the place; Religion never was designed To make our pleasures less.

Let those refuse to sing, Who never knew our God; But children of the heav’nly King May speak their joys abroad.

The men of grace have found Glory begun below; Celestial fruits on earthly ground From faith and hope may grow.

The hill of Zion yields A thousand sacred sweets Before we reach the heav’nly fields, Or walk the golden streets.

Then let our songs abound, And every tear be dry; We’re marching through Immanuel’s ground To fairer worlds on high.

HYMN OF DEPARTURE

Take The Name of Jesus With You

Take the name of Jesus with you, Child of sorrow and of woe. It will joy and comfort give you, Take it then where’er you go.

(Chorus)

Precious name, O how sweet! Hope of earth and joy of heaven; Precious name, O how sweet! Hope of earth and joy of heaven.

Take the name of Jesus ever As protection ev’rywhere. If temptations ‘round you gather, Breathe that holy name in prayer. [Refrain]

At the name of Jesus bowing, When in heaven we shall meet, King of kings, we’ll gladly crown Him When our journey is complete. [Refrain]

A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | 23

We should love and serve Him with all of our hearts from day to day, and share him with every person we meet. If they are like us, encourage them to continue to praise Him. If they’re not like us let them know how precious they are to the Lord, their Creator and Redeemer. And let them know that each and every one of us on this earth is moving (we’re not staying here) we are moving into eternity. And He is the only way they can be certain that when they close their eyes in time and open it in a light that is beyond explanation, they will be with the Lord forever.

Trades Union Involvement

Before there was a federation of labour there was the carpenter’s union and there was the plumber’s union. There was the electrical union and the [longshoreman’s] union at the dock. All these unions existed in splinters. They all had their different meetings, their different goals. I knew of Sir Randol who learned of the power of the unions in New York. He came back home imbibed with that spirit to unite these factions. He knew the power of it. We did not know the power of it. He knew the power of it. He saw it in action in New York. He came home and one night he was invited, or he came. He heard of a meeting of the carpenter’s union in a building on Hay Street just west of Mission Baptist Church. Just west of that on the same side. The carpenters was having a meeting there in the Exuma Society Hall and Sir Randol was there that night to speak to us about the power of unity and he talked about how we can, if we come together, how we can get things done and the matter arise that, we need someone to unite us, that we need a leader. So, I said to my carpenters, to my colleagues, I said, “Look a here. This man has experience. He is already a lawyer, and he has

the experience. Let us elect this man to become our leader.” That was the germ of the Bahamas Federation of Labour, and it grew strong. The union was the basic force that brought the PLP into power. The president suggested the only way to [bring change] was to send a message that they would get and that they would respect . . . a general strike. So, he turn and I was the general secretary. And he turned to me, and he said, “Mr. General Secretary what shall we do?” I said, “Let it roll,” and Bay Street was shut down. The city was shut down and the Bay Street Boys become so frantic. About two or three years later I was hired as a labour officer and they put that Fair Labour Standard Act in my hand and wherever in Nassau a worker had a problem they would report it to the Minister of Labour and I would go there and present that to these employers and say, “this is it. You can’t send this worker home except giving him notice and severance pay.” I was the first to use the Fair Labour Standard Act in the 1950’s.”

RememberingBISHOP JOSEPH ZONICLE

OF THE BAHAMAS FEDERATION OF LABOUR

On several occasions, I heard Sir Randol mention the name of Joseph Zonicle as he tried to explain to me the significant role that he played in The Bahamas Federation of Labour. It was only in 2013 though that I had the privilege of meeting him in person at a Labour Week event at the University of The Bahamas.

Mr. Zonicle was a Bahamas Federation of Labour stalwart and throughout “The Faith That Moved The Mountain”, Sir Randol makes reference to his presence and support at several of the key events that occurred in a people’s march towards freedom.

Mr. Zonicle was there during the General Strike; he was present at the first official Labour Day in 1962 and he also

served on the Fawkes Freedom Defense Fund Committee that raised enough money to pay Sir Randol’s legal fees and traveling expenses to Jamaica and London during the sedition trial. As the Assistant General Secretary in the Federation, he was often called on to read scripture passages and to offer prayers.

Today, we lift up Mr. Zonicle’s name and pay tribute to him and the numerous unnamed persons who stood in solidarity with Sir Randol and worked for justice and change in our Bahama Land. May his soul rest in peace.

CelebratingHIS LEGACY

“I want to admonish all of you to lift up the name of our Lord Jesus Christ so that the family would not be disjointed so that we would spend eternity with him praising him forever and ever. What a day that is going to be when Jesus Christ our Lord we shall see.”

HOW STELLA MET JOE

The year was 1947. The mailboat ride from Hatchet Bay to Nassau was not the smoothest. As Stella stepped off the mailboat. “The Fifty Two Miles”. Her legs were a little unsteady and one of the young men said to lean against one of the posts that held the ropes to anchor to the boat. She had to steady her footing. Mama Fedora concerned asked her “Stella, you alright”?

‘Yes Mama, I just a little woosie, I’ll be okay”. She proceeded to collect their suitcases and boxes of pineapples and watermelons that her father had packed for his sister Ellen. Stella couldn’t let Mama lift anything heavy, Mama was not in the best of health, had come to Nassau to see the doctor.

“I see cousin Cody, Mamma, he come to pick us up”. As Cody loaded the luggage onto the truck, Mama and Stella climbed into the passenger seat. Cody drove down Bay St., Stella’s eyes were glued to the window, as she peered into the picturesque shop windows with the most stylish

dresses. When they turned off Bay on to East St.; as they approached the hill, the scent of roasting peanuts assaulted her nostrils as they approached Mortimer’s Candy Kitchen.

The truck took a left turn through Eneas Jumper Corner. As they got half way through, the truck turned into a yard with a modest clapboard house. A stout brown skin woman, around Mama’s age was standing on the porch. She had a broad smile on her face, displaying perfectly even white teeth. She did not give the truck time to come to a complete stop as she ushered down the steps. “Oh good God, Stella!” “Fedora, how you?” Before mama could answer she continued “Lord looka Stella, she all grown up”.

They entered the house followed by Cody bringing the luggage. But not before Stella spied a light skinned young man at the side of the house, welding a hammer at a work bench. “I wonder who he is”. She thought to herself. Little did she know, the gentleman was checking her out too; and thinking the same thing.

That evening Aunt Ellen invited the young man to supper. She introduced the two young people. “I didn’t know you had a brother back in Eleuthera, Ms. Ellen, who had a daughter.” Joseph said responding to Aunty Ellen; and such a pretty one he thought. Estella’s appetite seemed to have left her. She began pushing the food around her plate with her fork.

“Girl, you een hungry aye? Eat up” said Aunty Ellen.

A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | 31

Stella glanced shyly across the table at Joseph. He too seemed to be having a loss of appetite.

During the two weeks Stella was visiting. She saw Joseph three or four times, but had very little contact with him. At the end of her two weeks Cousin Cody took Mama and Stella back to the mailboat for departure. He had asked Joseph to accompany him. As he sat on the back of the truck he tried to see as much of Stella as he could through the back window. Stella could feel his eyes on her back. After they arrived on the dock and the luggage loaded on, Stella decided to walk across the street to the City Bakery to buy cakes and cookies. Joseph asked her if he could accompany her, and she agreed. There was a long line in the bakery so it took a while before she was served; as they exited the bakery they heard the blast of the mailboat’s horn. As she began to run, as daintily as she could, towards the dock, with Joseph trotting along side her. When they reached the dock, the mailboat was pulling away as the mate on the dock was securing the ropes. Stella could see Mama Fedora as she was standing on the dock. There were tears streaming down Mama’s face, as she wrung her hands and watched in disbelief.

Stella searched in her handbag for a handkerchief as she felt tears welling up in her eyes. She felt a light tap on her shoulder. “Don’t worry, we’ll bring you back in two days when the boat returns. Let’s get you back to your auntie”. It was Joseph trying to comfort her.

What am I going to wear for two days, Stella thought, all my clothes are on the boat. She was quiet all the way on the drive back to Eneas Jumper Corner. As she exited the truck in Aunty Ellen’s yard, suddenly she heard the sound of drums, and if there was anything Stella liked it was a band, you wouldn’t think she was the same young lady who was subdued on the drive to her aunt’s house, as she bolted from the yard toward the sound of the drums. The band was marching north up East Street. She ran out to the corner and waited for the band to pass. She begun tapping her feet and swayed her body as the band approached. When the band reached her she started marching up the hill with them. The smell of the peanuts caused her to check herself, she knew she wasn’t far from Shirley Street. Stella turned around , and doing so she bumped into someone, who stepped on her left foot. She felt her slipper loose and nearly come off her foot. Her slipper latch was broken. Stella begun the long walk to Eneas Jumper Corner, dragging her slipper. Trying her best to keep it on.

“Estella, what happened to your shoe?”

Joseph asked her as she hobbled into the yard. “Can I fix your slipper, for you?”

Stella looked at him a little embarrassed. “Someone stepped on my foot and broke my shoe latch”, she replied shyly. “Yes please, you can fix it, thank you.” She handed him the slipper.

The two days passed quickly. Stella found herself on the road to the mailboat again, accompanied by her cousin and Joseph. Joseph used that opportunity to continue to get acquainted with her. He asked her about her family in Eleuthera and about her settlement, of Hatchet Bay. It was now easier to talk to him, she was a little disappointed when the dock came into view. Cody pulled up, got out and went to the boat, stating that he had to check on something, but they both knew he wanted to give them a little time alone.

Joseph handed Stella a small brown paper bag. “This is a little treat to enjoy on the ride home”. Stella took the bag and opened it. It was a jar of chocolates, a brand Stella had always wanted to sample. She smiled and said “Thank you”.

“Can I write to you? “ Joseph asked her.

“I guess it will be alright” she replied and then stepped onto the boat. Joseph waited

| A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will 32

until the boat sailed out of sight, before he and Cody left the dock.

Every week Joseph faithfully wrote to Stella and each letter was accompanied with a jar of chocolates. Stella was always happy to reply. She returned to Nassau several times during the course of the year, and each trip solidified their growing friendship.

Joseph knew Estella was the woman he wanted for his wife, so almost a year to the date of their first meeting he asked Stella if she would consent to him writing a letter to her father, Edward Belle, asking his permission to become engaged to her. Of course Stella consented; she had fallen in love with Joseph since she first set eyes on him.

Joseph wrote to Papa. Stella’s father replied favorably, and Joseph asked Estella to become his bride. She said” YES”.

They were married 28th June 1948.

MEETING A SPECIAL YOUNG LADY AND RECOMMITTING TO HIS SPIRITUAL CALL

“I went to Mrs. Strachan who had a spacious living room through Eneas Jumper Corner through the corner there. She knew me through her nephew, you know, so I was welcome there. And one evening I was there making preparations to send my exams back to Chicago and when I was there, one evening a young lady step into the door and during that time, up to that time from school days, up to that time I was very bashful. I could not look at a young lady face. I was very bashful and so this young lady came inside, and I was looking down. I couldn’t look in her face. I was too bashful and as I look down I saw the lace to one of her shoe. One of her slippers was torn and out of place, and I said, looking down, I said, “Can I fix that lace for you?” She said, “Yes, you can.” I stoop down, fix it as best I could, and then I manage and look up in her face. And it was what you call love at first sight.

But the Lord was in that because I had forgotten my vow that I made years ago to the Lord. I had gone in carpentry and striving to be an architect. I succeed to the point where when people come and see what I was doing, they would ask me to draw their homes for them and I sent it to the Board of Works and they all passed. So, I was an architect but, when that young lady come into that room that night it was a beginning. The Lord said you been running from me long enough. And I didn’t know at that time but I feel in love with this girl. About a year after that meeting I decide to get married, yes. So, I know that was the Lord because I had made him a promise and I had forgotten it, but He brought it back to me that I couldn’t get out of it.”

TRIBUTE TO MY EARTHLY FATHER

The highest Tribute I can pay to my Father is that he lived up to the Abrahamic Standard, namely, to teach his Children about Yahweh, and, to trust Yahweh no matter what.

About two weeks before he saw his Saviour face to face, I shared with him a Vision which The Holy Spirit had placed on my heart for the Homestead and its Property.

He questioned me to be sure he understood the magnitude of what I had said.

He then replied: “There is nothing too hard for God.” Daddy, no human language can express my Love, Respect and Honour of you for Time and Eternity.

Your Eldest, Marilyn.

TRIBUTE TO MY FATHER PENNED 12 February 2022

Practically all of my 71 years was spent under my Daddy’s roof. I was blessed to be his only child whose birth he witnessed and from that moment every decision he made was predicated on what was in my best interest. His first decision was to expose me to Biblical principles that would point me in the direction of accepting Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. I came to know God was real as a result of the regular family devotions he held with all of his children, sitting around him. He would insist each child read a scripture verse and pray. I struggled with reading and memorizing the scripture verses and he would not move on until I got it right. Later in my life he also encouraged me to preach the gospel by virtue of me being a christain. He stressed a christain is a preacher who tells everyone they meet about the importance of being a child of God. His Church Business Card read “Need Real Life, Come To Christ”.

Daddy’s second fulfillment of his parental role was ensuring I had a good education. His emphasis on education was led by example. In 1961, he had a desire to pastor a church and he prepared himself by enrolling in the Bahamas Baptist Institute to study theology. Around this time, I was not seriously applying myself to my schooling and subsequently did not follow my older sister Marilyn and younger brother Joseph in attending the Government High School. I told him I wanted to attend a private high school and he restored my self esteem by struggling to pay my school fees at the then Bahamas Baptist College. As the Bahamas Baptist Institute and the Bahamas Baptist College were sister Institutions, he was in one classroom studying for his seminary certification and I was in another studying for a high school diploma. I was reluctant to study with him and tried to hide it from my friends that we were in school together.

Daddy’s third contribution to shaping my life manifested in his encouragement to select a meaningful career that would put me in a position to be independent. He told me he did not like how his sisters were treated, therefore I should choose a career that would enable me to take care of myself. He influenced my work ethic through his preparation

for work, by the way he dressed, by being on time and by being prepared for the task at hand. In 1968 he commenced work at the Department of Labour and once again we were operating in the same environment, namely the Ministry of Home Affairs. He was a Labour Inspection Officer and I was a Teacher at the then Boys Industrial School.

This Tribute would be voluminous if I were to document the ways my Daddy influenced my civic and social consciousness and responsibilities. I would marvel at his people skills and the long conservations he had with a cross section of persons on topical religious and secular issues. While attending church was given priority, he was also a nation builder through his active membership in the Federation of Labour, Bahama Island Baptist Association, Deep South Cat Island Movement, the Prison Fellowship Board and the Dean Granger Center. I conclude this Tribute noting a copy of the 19th March 2006 Providence Baptist Church Order Of Service written by Daddy which stated “ Let Us Praise And Thank The Lord For His Grace Bestowed Upon Us In Choosing Us A Small Band Of Believers To Show By Exampling The Lord’s Strategy Every Believer’s Mandate To Preach The Gospel Established In The Great Commision, Mathew 28;18-20”. Let Us Demonstrate Our Love By Obedience To Him”.

DID YOU KNOW MY DADDY?

My Daddy was “As Fine As They Come”

My Daddy was a GIANT of a man, there’s no denying He embedded in us the need to keep trying He was a man driven by deep conviction and faith

Who realized that his sole reason for being was because of God’s grace Without uttering a word He commanded respect His Godliness, Strength and Perseverance we will never forget Your love for our family was second to GOD Daddy; You brought us up to be decent. never sparing the rod Thank You Daddy for being a disciplinarian and for the “tamarind switch” I am better for that and my life has been enriched.

Daddy for 73 years, you have loved Mama and us. You were a rare man upon whom greatest was thrust. Daddy your love for God’s creation was always seen All who came into contact with You held you in high esteem.. Daddy You instilled in me, that only the best would do. So I worked, and worked just to please You. Many times I thought Yo u were too stern. I realized later, that it was for my motivation

And because of that, I strove for Your approbation. Daddy, my love for You will never depart. You are forever in my heart.

Daddy, I am so honoured to be the only one of your daughters to bare your name;that alone makes me feel that I was your favorite. Samra said YOU made all of us feel special. She is right, we all feel that we were YOUR favorite by the love and attention ,you showed us individually. That is a testament to what a GREAT FATHER you were. Someone once told me that “The longer you have your parents with you, the more you will feel it when they are gone” truer words were never spoken. YOU were a constant in my life. I never wanted to think of YOU leaving us, even though I knew it was inevitable. I know your spirit is in the PLACE where YOU were longing to be. The song YOU were singing the night before YOU transitioned.:”Hallelujah We Shall Rise On That Resurrection Morning”. is fixated in my brain , I wake up in the morning with it on my mind, all through the day it is playing in my head and it is the last thing I think of as I drift off to a restless sleep at night. Until we meet again Daddy.

Your Dodiphine looks forward to seeing YOU again.

POPS, WAS AN AMAZING MAN.

Over the past fifteen years I have grown to love and respect him as a father. I remember with great fondness the two week he spent in Boston February of 2017. I can see him playing with my dog Ace, right now. When he left Ace was so agitated that he began chewing up the furniture. It was an honour to have you as my house guest. He always said to me “Don’t forget Jesus Christ, and give Him all the glory”. I was honoured to be baptized by him on Goodman”s Bay in the spring of 2019. When he slipped and his slipper went floating off in the ocean, I dived under and retrieved it, those standing nearest to him were too afraid to dive. (smile).

On the 9th of November 2019, tears filled my eyes as I watched him walk Josephine up the aisle and placed her hand in mine. I am honoured to be his son in law. I am so honoured to be part of such a great family. Pops you were such a joy to be around. I loved watching you interact with your grandchildren.

I will always remember what Ma said to me, she said “I told my girls, I will feed you, you take care of your Daddy”.

Rest in peace Pops. I will see you when I get to heaven.

TRIBUTE TO BISHOP JAZ

Iam the fourth of twelve daughters, and by God’s grace, the first one to get married. Daddy influenced me from a very young age. That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to be married to a pastor. At an early age, I would often spend a great deal of time reading some of his theological books.

I am grateful that I was raised in a Christian home. Daddy always led us in family devotions and would tell us that we needed to know the Lord personally. I fondly remember walking down the aisle at Providence Baptist Mission Church, in the Grove. Shortly thereafter, Daddy baptized me. As a matter of fact, Daddy baptized my husband and our two sons.

Upon my return from studying abroad, Daddy encouraged me to use my training in Early Childhood development at Providence Kidee Center. We met in the old building that was destroyed by arsonists in 1995. I also have fond memories of Daddy leading Sister Mozelle Delevaux, Julian and me in door-to-door visitations. I think we knocked on every door in Ridgeland Park, West and Coconut Grove.

In Julian’s final semester at RTS, Orlando, we had exhausted our budget for seminary. Daddy gave Julian some advice that has left an indelible impression on both of us, as well as our children. He told my husband to explain to our children the importance of depending on the Lord for all things. In the past 27-plus years, we all have witnessed the Lord fulfilling His promises to us found in Mark 10:28-30.

I love to garden, and quite honestly, I learned to do so from Daddy. In Nassau, Daddy was quick to tell me that it was important to use the land for cultivating a garden. In the late1980’s, my family and I ate directly from my garden almost every day. One day, while he and Mom visited us in Texas, Daddy encouraged me to utilize our backyard for gardening and farming. By God’s grace, we reaped bunches of sweet peaches, pears, dates, blueberries, apples, blackberries, collard greens, kale, huge cucumbers, and swiss chard.

Thanks, Daddy. Looking back, I’m amazed at how much time you spent with each of your daughters. My family and I love you and will see you soon! I end with your favorite greeting: “Jesus Christ is Lord’’.

A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | 47

Hearing the news of my grandfather’s death was bitter-sweet: I’m grateful that he’s finally worshipping Jesus in all His glory, but I’ll definitely miss seeing him every time I visit Nassau. My grandparents always did their best to make up for lost time each year we visited, and now it won’t be the same. However, when I reflect on his life, it has been a joy sitting with him and Grammy and hearing all about life growing up, how things were when they met, and how they loved each other. Granddaddy called me JamJam, and only he was designated to call me that. I am so blessed that a man who dedicated his life to serving God baptized me in the Atlantic Ocean and prayed over me that early morning.

Deborah MILDRED ZONICLE Daughter

Being the sixth child of thirteen and fifth daughter of Bishop Joseph Alexander and Estella Louise BelleZonicle has had its privileges and downfalls. As a child, I was sandwiched between sisters who were either high achievers, bossy and lazy or those that were cry babies, mischievous and lazy.

Although we had very limited means and were a family of 14 living in a 2 bedroom clapboard house, we had running water in the yard and bathroom only. We washed dishes (tin plates and cups) in a big white tin basin in the kitchen or in the back of the yard on the raised septic

I do not recall going to bed hungry too many times because even if it was only tea and bread or flour pap we had something. I recall daddy calling us every Sunday morning in the front room where they slept for morning devotions. Everyone had to pray and the older ones had to read the Bible. I remember daddy coming home from work riding his bicycle or walking home or being given a ride. I remember daddy helping me with my math homework. Daddy always believed in my abilities to handle his money as I recall him sending me to Barclays bank on the corner of Montrose and Madeira as young as 8 years old to make cash deposits by myself. I do not recall getting beaten from Mom too often because she would always say ‘wait till your daddy come home’. Daddy never spared the rod. I know I got beaten more than all 11 of them.

My parents are hand and glove. They complement each other. What one lacks the other makes up for. They have weathered many storms. They were each others first and only true love. I thank them for their sacrificial love in going without so we can have. For showing us that hard work doesn’t kill anybody. I salute them for 73 years of exemplary marriage. Giving and taking and always relying on our heavenly Father.

I admired my father so much that I always promised myself not to marry anyone that did not have his qualities. Hence probably the reason why I am single to this date.

Daddy’s life spanned two centuries. 1900 and 2000. He was around when the Bahamas, indeed the world, travelled by foot, donkey, horse and carriage, bicycle, stagecoach, sailboat, mailboat, steam ship, cruise ship, airplane, jet, concord, rocket. Mail went from telegram to email. Typewriters to computers.

Our currency from pound, shilling and pence to dollars and cents. Paper checks to plastic cards. Standing in line to online banking. Wire transfers to e-wallet, crypto currencies and cell phone transactions.

My father was a scholar throughout his life. He went to grade school without shoes, became a Teacher’s monitor, studied the Royal Readers, math, algebra, architecture, carpentry, standard Latin and Greek, went to seminary and was a great debater, Teacher, Preacher, lover of one woman Estella Louise Belle-Zonicle, father of a baker’s dozen, grandfather and great grandfather.

My father was a disciplinarian, strict with his daughters, a no nonsense man, yet had an astute sense of humour. He was a provider, an entrepreneur, guidance counsellor, chauffeur, church bus driver and friend. He loved all human beings and was not afraid to speak his mind.

Daddy was not perfect, he could not cook or boil water, I never saw him in the kitchen. His wife and daughters spoiled him. Yet he opened his humble abode to everyone .

Daddy gave and loaned money to many family and friends that in many cases have not been repaid. These funds were needed to take care of his own family.

Daddy was a man that could be trusted. When he operated a small grocery store, what his family did not consume, the rest was ‘trusted’ by neighbors and friends or stolen from the store in broad daylight or the shop was broken into at night. Still he had to pay the suppliers who extended to him lines of credit or he got numerous bank loans to replenish supplies.

However, there came a time when it really did not make sense to continue the business but he paid D’Albenas, Asa Pritchard, Barclays Bank all outstanding bills.

He was a Justice of the Peace. He married, did affidavits for many persons at no charge. His beloved darling attempted to chastise him many times for being so philanthropic.

All that I noted so far and others may recall and say about my father he would call dung. His priority for the past 86 years since the age of 16 was to be a witness for his Lord and saviour. To spread the gospel. He told us that while in the field in Port Howe, Cat Island. He asked his father, my grandfather ‘what do I need to do to be saved?’ His father’s response was ‘Joe, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.’ He said that he did as was told and his father led him in his prayer for salvation. Like his father led him in the sinner’s prayer, so did daddy lead me. This was his greatest gift to me. My tribute to my father is my admonishment to you. If you have not yet said and meant with all your being the ABC prayer, please do it now.

A – accept that you are a sinner. For all have sinned and come short of the free gift of God.

B – Believe that God (Yahweh) sent his only begotten son, Jesus Christ to die for your sin (John 3:16 For God so loved

the world (you) that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life)

C – Confess with your mouth that you are a sinner and you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and that He came to make you a new creation, cleanse you of your sins and come into your heart. You accept his free gift of salvation that you cannot work for.

Now I can say like my father always said once he came into contact with anyone and presented the gospel of salvation your blood is not on my hands.

Daddy witnessed to his visitors even while laying on his bed. A few days before his passing, lying on his side, he witnessed to a young man and then led him kneeling at his bedside in the sinner’s prayer. That young man came to his house wanting MIP to bless him. He did not know that he would leave being truly blessed and leaving the house a newborn babe in Jesus Christ his saviour. Do you know who you are? MIP – Most Important Person. This was my father. MIP Joseph Alexander Zonicle. Loved, Special, Unique who revered God only. I give Yahweh, ALL THE GLORY, HONOR, THANKS AND PRAISE for Daddy’s life. He is in the presence of his Saviour. HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH.

A MAN ABOVE ALL MEN TO ME

My Daddy Joseph Alexander Zonicle was unapologetically a man above all men to me. As a very young child, I can remember how daddy demonstrated for me how to put Yahweh first in my life. From the time I developed an awareness of myself daddy led our family in sunrise and sunset prayer and bible study. The first book that I learned to read was the bible because daddy used devotional time as teachable moments.

Daddy had a good friend named Pastor Eugene Butler and as a child I admired how bold they were in conducting street meetings. Like the Apostle Paul, daddy was bold like a lion but harmless as a dove. He had a quiet disposition yet he was loving, kind, firm, confident and disciplined, always ready to stand up for what was right. He shared with me that he informed his employer, at the time, that he would be standing with the workers during the 1958 General Strike, which by the way, he helped to organize. His employer threatened that if he joined the strike he would be fired. Daddy, a husband and father of seven children; myself being the young baby at the time; walked off his job to be one of the leaders of the strike alone with Sir Randol Fawkes.

Daddy instilled in me the need to be a leader and not a follower and to be willing to stand alone for the truth that is found in the word of Yahweh. He consistently reminded me that straight and narrow is the gate to living

A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | 55

a righteous life and few people will choose to enter that gate, however, wide is the gate that leads to unrighteousness and death and many choose to enter that gate. That is why daddy encouraged me to spread the gospel every opportunity and to serve faithfully in the church ministry, where he pastored. Yes my daddy was a man above all men.

Daddy taught me how to catch a fish on the rocks of Yamacraw Beach, how to ride a bicycle right in the yard and how to share the gospel to win souls for Jesus Christ, during numerous mission trips on the Family Islands. He was a patient teacher to me. He built blackboards and used them to teach me and my sisters and to reinforce the knowledge received from school on any given day. I and several of my sisters inherited his love of tending the garden in which he permitted me to be his helper. To this day gardening is my favorite hobby. Daddy instilled in me the need to live within my means and to resist the temptation to compare my possessions and achievements with others because I did not know what persons would have done to acquire what they have. I had one person to impress and that person is Yahweh. He advised me to value myself as Yahweh values me, fearfully and wonderfully made. By doing so I would not need to be affirmed by any other person. He encouraged me to do everything as unto Christ and not covet the praise of man. Daddy saw all mankind as precious souls in the sight of Yahweh and as such he never looked down upon people, but saw them as having great potential that could be used for good once they come to the realization that they are loved of Yahweh, who will save them if they repent from their sins and invite Jesus Christ into their hearts and become a new creation.

In closing I would like to thank my mother for all of the support she gave my father in rearing their children. I am so appreciative of the example, guidance and direction I received from my parents. I am self-disciplined, confident and I honor Yahweh because of daddy. He will live on in my heart until I see him again in heaven.

His sixth daughter, Pauline A. Zonicle-Claude

When you are brought forth into the earth, the first thing that you are defined by is your name, and just like Joseph, the King of Dreams, who became one of the greatest Leaders in the Bible, you have lived up to and exceeded the stature of your name:

H - Honourable. You were a true man of Honour.

I know that you did right in the sight of God and he has now welcomed you home with open arms. Even though you are not with us, I feel your presence and God’s favor just from being a part of your lineage every day. What a blessing it is to your granddaughter. Your legacy will truly live on!

DADDY, I

want to thank you for instilling in me Godly principles from the time I knew myself to this present day. You took me to Sunday School no matter the weather, hot, cold, or rainy every Sunday. “Sunday is the Lord’s Day” in daddy’s home. At 5:30 am we all had to get up for Family Devotions. Each of us was given the opportunity to lead in devotion which entailed reading the scriptures and giving our understanding of what we read. By 8 am we had already eaten our breakfast and were just about ready for Sunday School, which began at 9:45 am. We were always on time even if we had to walk. After Sunday School, there was Sunday Morning Divine Worship Service which started at 11 am SHARP! After the worship service, we went home, ate our Sunday dinner, got some rest and at 6 pm we were present at Training Union, where we were taught church history and why we were called Baptist, etc. Then at 7 pm, we went right into the Sunday Evening Worship Service. There, we had a song service, shared testimonies, and listened to the preached word. We would be back home at 8 pm.

You took us to Prayer Meeting every Wednesday from about 7 pm to about 8:30 pm. Fridays were Youth Meetings. You also took us to revivals and trainings. Saturday morning, we had to get up very early at 5:30 am to clean the house, yard, wash, iron, and fold clothes and set them aside for Sunday morning. Bedtime was 8:30 pm. Daddy, your motto was to GO TO BED WITH SUNDAY SCHOOL ON YOUR MIND. I will never, ever forget that.

Daddy, you were there for me all the way. You taught me how to persevere, work hard, set and attain goals, push, stand-alone if I had to, overcome challenges, fight for what is right, to be a lady, not to give up no matter the circumstances, humility, time, and resource management, how to dress, speak, overcome obstacles, buy quality and how to listen to wise counsel. Daddy, you said to seek the Lord while you are young and you will never ever regret it. Daddy, as you know, that is what I did and I will never regret it.

Daddy, you were a very hardworking, honest, intelligent man, your expertise in architecture stood out. You were also a highly-skilled, efficient carpenter and builder, just to name a few.

Daddy, you were there attending school graduations, you gave me away at my wedding and you said that you were “only doing this once”. You were there for all my family celebrations. Including Gabrielles’s high school and college Graduations, Charisma, and Aneka’s honor roll service, and elementary graduation and birthday celebrations.

Daddy, thank you for being an exemplary grandfather to my children Gabrielle, Charisma, and Aneka and great grandfather to my grandchildren Rayne, Blaise, and Cleare, Father-in-law to

A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | 59

Clinton, and Grandfather in law to my son-inlaw Ondrey.

Daddy, from the time I knew myself you taught and instilled the word of God in me (us). If I (we) wanted to be successful in life, I (we) must first seek the Kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto me (us). Matthew 6:33.

Finally, daddy, I would like to thank you for being my father. From day one to this present day you were that Godly man to me. Daddy, the God you served over 102 years you emulated to the T. The life you lived, you wanted others to see Jesus in you. Daddy, you walked the talk, and you practiced what you preached. Daddy, you were the best father. I thank the Lord for giving me a father like you. I will always love you in my heart.

DEAR GRANDADDY, Y

ou taught us so much throughout the years. Your love for God was unwavering, and you never failed to encourage us to tell others about Jesus. We will miss those playful bites that you gave and the encouraging words you spoke. The life you led was exemplary, you lived what you preached and taught about. In the last conversation we had, you told us that we should tell everyone that we came into contact with about Jesus and his love for us. It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that when we come to visit the house you won’t be there anymore but, we know that you are in the arms of your savior rejoicing in heaven. We love you grandaddy and we know that we will meet again.

Aneka & Charisma.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighted in his way” Psalms 37:23. Daddy often talked of how his mother defied his father and sent him away from the farm in Cat Island to Nassau on a boat to learn a trade, with his father galloping on his horse on the dock. I guess the horse could not swim. He came to Nassas, learnt a trade , married the beautiful dark Stella, and the rest is history!

“To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven” Ecclesiastes 3:1. Daddy knew his purpose, and that was to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to all who would listen, and that should accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. He admonished everyone he met, small and great, short or tall, young or old, rich or poor. He did not just talk, was not just a hearer of the word, he lived it. He encouraged his children and congregation to live Mathew 28:19-20 one of his favorite scriptures...to ”Go ye therefore, and teach ALL nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” He went from door to door, street to street, from island to island lifting up Jesus and teaching Vacation Bible School.

I believe that I have been blessed with the character traits of tenacity, determination and perseverance, despite the odds, from my Daddy, believing I can do all things through Christ, that nothing is impossible with God. I recall when he decided that his family of 13 had outgrown the two bedroom wooden home. He embarked on building a stone home that included store fronts. He always maintained a convenience store that many people in the neighborhood stole from, or credited without ever paying back. But he never ran them down or demanded payment when they came back to the store. This house was like no other, so passers by would taunt him for using his girls as helpers and jerred that it would never be finished. But he did with God’s help.

I believe I got my sense of duty and time management from my Daddy, he was a loving and faithful husband to his “ Darlin Stella” Everyone knew that she was not always easy to deal with. She is strong willed, creative speech, and an independent thinker. She never neglected to provide hot home cooked meals, even if it was just corned beef with cabbage and white rice, Daddy’s food came out first. I remember the Ford Escort Daddy drove, could spot it a mild away, because we had to jump the wall and be home when he arrived to have his lunch, and avoid a tamarind switch, from

A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | 63

going to the neighbor yard which was forbidden. I learnt from my Daddy that the commitment made to your spouse in the presence of God was binding despite the ups and downs. He left father and mother and cleaved to his wife of 74 years.

I get my love for gardening and plants from my Daddy. Even Though he worked a full time job as a Labor Officer, pastored a church, and was raising 12 children, he still found time to plant a garden, raise chickens and keep the trees groomed. He was most at peace when he relaxed under the coconut or banana trees after working his garden on a hot evening.

My Father made me feel special and beautiful. I got my first piece of jewelry from my Daddy. He attended all the Parent Teacher Association meetings (PTA), and was even the Treasurer of the Donald W. Davis Junior High School while I attended.

“I said in mine heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work” Ecclesiastes 3:17. Short in stature but a GIANT of a man. The best Father on earth the world has ever known. A man of God. A Pastor/ Preacher. A friend and confidant. A cheerful giver. A chauffeur to children, grandchildren. A loving and dedicated husband. A Labor activist. A man ahead of his time.

Daddy you are with your Lord Jesus now, your work and purpose here on earth is done. Take your rest, and here at that day...” ..Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee Joseph Alexander Zonicle), ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord”

One day I will greet you in heaven or meet you in the clouds.

GOD’S ANGEL & MY FATHER

Daddy I love you, now and forever. I will always carry you in my heart. You have raised me and my sisters extremely well, providing us with a Christian upbringing, one that you embodied to the fullest, as you led by example for me and others to emulate. Daddy I can never thank you enough for the love and care you gave me and my mother, your loving wife. Daddy you loved me despite my imperfections , advised me and gave me wise counsel, and encouraged me to put God first in my life so that all other things I desired will come to fruition in God’s perfect time.

Daddy if only I could have verbally expressed my gratitude to you where you could hear these words. But I know you understand and you know my heart. I want you to know that the morals and. values passed down to me will definitely be passed on to my children and my children’s children. You were very stern , and sometimes I thought too stern, but now I want to say thank you for your sternest, for it kept me in line and as a teenager, kept the boys at bay.

Daddy, thank you for being the UNIQUE, GENTAL, HARDWORKING, STRAIGHTFORWARD, and NO-NONSENSE man that you were, passing many of those characters on to me, making me the STRONG, FIRM, INDEPENDENT woman that I am today. I will strive to continue, to make you and Momma proud.

Daddy, there is no man on the planet that I know, that served the one true and living God as you did, and that is why he granted you a SPECIAL BLESSING with longevity of 102 years on this earth.

I know you are with your Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and one day I shall meet you again and join you in praising the God of your father, mother, and their ancestors. So enjoy the treasures you have a laid in heaven which you had sent ahead, for I know God has welcomed you to your permanent home.

Daddy, I can speak and write of the great man you are/were, where my fingers grow numb, so for time’s sake, I shall end by saying “YOU ARE ONE OF A KIND AND I WILL LOVE YOU ALWAYS”.

Your Loving Daughter, Clavia Melissa McClain

Shirnell ATHENA

ZONICLE-GARDINER Daughter

Iwas my mother’s favorite child. I know this because when she sought to wean my youngest brother Charles, she called me a big 9 years old boy to suck the milk from her breast.

She wanted to name me William after her father, but Dad chose Joseph. She and the Smiths called me Willie, the Zonicle’s called me Joe.

Her favorite scripture was Psalm 136. She cautioned me that, it was a dangerous thing to have Jesus only on your lips and not in your heart. This would be evident when on one’s death bed.

My father did not want me to become a school monitor because I would have to wear shoes. My mother responded, then he has to learn a trade. I will send him to his oldest sister Margaret. She put me into the care of the boat captain. By the time the boat reached New Bight, dad had ridden his horse to fetch me. The captain did not acquiesce as he had promised my mother. Dad could have gone to the local police and insist, instead he returned to Port Howe.

I was sent to Exuma to brake rocks. A gentleman inquired if I was interested in learning a trade. Upon my return to Nassau, I became his Carpenter apprentice. When my oldest brother George visited, he was astounded to see the bench I made for Margaret’s sewing machine and told Dad he wanted to learn the same trade.

I and George were curious to know what men found in liquor, so we bought the best Jack Daniels and drank it. The hangover we got ruined our taste for rum and it’s like ever since.

Upon a visit to Port Howe, on Burbon’s white land purchased by my father, I asked him what I needed to do to be saved. He responded, “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved”. I asked in surprise “is that all?” Dad replied, “that is all, son.” And there Dad led me to saving knowledge in Christ.

My cousin Mice, uncle Bodie’s daughter called me ‘Charlie’s little girl” because I was handsome and bashful. If I liked a girl, she would never know because I would never tell her.

I often visited your mother Aunt Ellen Strachan with her first cousin Cordy Ferguson. She was and is my one true love. I don’t think daddy ever betrayed her and even though she was pursued especially

when he worked on Watlings Island, she never betrayed him.

The Lord took my only son, but I would not trade in any of my girls.

The marriage was not perfect, but it lasted. How and when they reconciled, I don’t know. I don’t remember one night, except for September 2021 when Mom caught covid, that they didn’t spend together if the other was not traveling. I don’t think he would survive long if mom passed before him. Every time he got sick since he turned 100 years old, we tried to cajole him to hang around for her 100th. Birthday celebration. I hope it’s the Lord’s will that she survives him and reaches the milestone also.

If four of us were laying in the bed, daddy would feel our feet. When he touched me he would say, “this Nell for she has tender feet”. I was not one to walk around bare footed.

When afro was in style, many nights I plaited his hair.

When the boys bullied me in grade 3 and Christiana on her way to the shop spotted me skipping school, I saw

A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will | 71

him driving thru the corners looking for me before he caught up with me.

Daddy never threw any of us off potter’s cay to learn how to swim. I remember him holding us up on whatever beach we visited and saying ‘kick, kick.’ Saunder’s beach was his favorite, but we didn’t like going there because you were bound to leave with a busted toe as the beach was very rocky. He would also take each of us, one at a time, on his back while he swam in deeper water.

When I passed the entrance exams for St. John’s College, he was proud to be told my math scores were very high. Not once do I recall being asked to sit in the office because my school fees were not paid. He even sent me to Mexico for a school trip in 1976 with the Spanish Teacher. I can still visualize the sights and my $120 in $20 travelers checks.

I don’t think I ever told him, but it was on that trip I committed myself to attending evening services and personal devotions when I saw other students not ashamed of their faith in Christ.

My older sisters that didn’t secure a scholarship had to work and save their money for their university education. After graduating from the College of The Bahamas in 1982, I got accepted into Dalhousie but there was no money so I went to work for Barclay’s bank. After

one year, I was told to apply to Dalhousie again. This time and for three consecutive years, daddy took out a $5,000 thousand dollars loan at Barclay’s Palmdale to cover my tuition, $1,700 hundred differential fee, board and food. Thus, it was nothing for me to finance his trip to Israel in 1989. I wanted him to sleep under the skies his Lord slept under; to walk the streets his Lord walked; to bathe in the Jordan where his Lord was baptized. When he asked for a belt with cowboy tips, I searched the stores in the Mall at Marathon and bought him 2 (black and brown).

On my wedding day, as I descended the staircase, he paid me the best compliment…he stared at me and said ’you look like your mother’. He advanced monies to subsidize the expenses. When I got within $1,000 thousand dollars or maybe $1,500 hundred dollars of my monthly repayment to him, he told me keep the balance as his gift to me. Since I began working, no Christmas, Father’s Day or Birthday would pass and I didn’t put at least a crisp blue marlin in his hand. Often, I would let my daughters or grand daughter do it, as I wanted to train them to give.

I got in trouble one Father’s Day, as Lloyd saw the receipt, but the watch was not for him.

When I worked in Grand Bahama for a week, daddy stayed in the hotel, rested and witnessed to the local vendors. We

traveled to Utah, Texas, and Hawaii. He wanted to dip his feet in the Pacific Ocean, see Pearl Harbor and the pineapple fields Dole had developed after insisting that the Cat Island farmers export the entire fruit instead of just the core area.

His father was a world traveler. When I went to Ireland in 2017 with little Mell, he said why didn’t you visit England, you were so close.

It was nothing, if I was busy, for daddy to collect my daughters from school. He even went on a field trip to visit the dentist. You would think at 72 years old he would not welcome sleeping with a brand new infant. However, a few days after my daughter Niké was born, I caught an infection and Dr. Kirtland Culmer advised me to socially distance myself from the baby. Mom and daddy kept her for an entire week. Dr. Culmer until his retirement was daddy’s doctor. In his later years, whenever daddy visited his office, the bill was ‘No Charge.’

Daddy supported Mom in having his progeny gather around him on Sunday afternoons after worship. It was his favorite childhood memory of his maternal family going to his grandmother Faith Burnside Smith’s house in the same manner for a smothered (cooked/simmered with plenty of herbs) meat dinner.

Daddy was the humblest patient I knew.

| A Life in Pursuit of God’s Perfect Will 72

Always grateful for the service rendered. Sometimes saying to me ‘Thank You Darling’ , a name he reserved for mom.

I traveled the streets of Nassau witnessing door to door with daddy even while pregnant with my girls. When Mom traveled, many a Sunday after church, daddy would eat at my house, have an afternoon nap and then head out for evening service.

Seemingly, after he ordained Pauline and I in February 2016, daddy slowed down from coming to worship services. When asked about it he replied, ‘I don’t need to over exert myself. If I feel up to the mark, I will attend, if not I won’t and I won’t feel guilty about it either because my record is in heaven’.

As Friday February 4, 2022 dawned, no one said to me ‘knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? (2 Kings 2)… Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. 10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.’

I saw Daddy taken. What a blessing if his anointing would fall on Me. Anointing Fall On Me.

My tribute to you was supposed to be a collage of photos over the years because for me pictures can tell a million stories. A million stories is all that I have of you now. A

million smiles, a million laughs, a million hugs... a million pinches, a million embraces, a million tears, a million joys... granddaddy you a TRULY one in a MILLION!

I struggled with coming home for Christmas because I felt that my grades did not warrant such a trip, but I am so happy I came. Never would I have imagined it would be my last Christmas with you.

Granddaddy, although you never officially gave me a nickname, I felt like I was your driver. I remember so clearly the first day you drove with me. You were hesitant and said you would wait for someone else, but I insisted that I could drive and you would be fine. You said, “You sure you could handle this big jeep?” You would not let me surprise you. Telling me when to stop, when to turn, don’t forget your signal, honk, slow down...I watched you clutch the door handle as if you couldn’t wait for the car to stop. After a few minutes, I watched you become relaxed and comfortable with the drive. When we got back to 138, you said good job and that I could handle myself on this dangerous road. I was a good driver. From then, I was your driver. I took you wherever you needed to go, even if it meant sitting in the bank yard for an hour, while you witnessed before finally coming in the car.

As I read mommy’s tribute, it was my field trip to Village Dental in grade 3. I was so happy to have you with me. We went for TCBY afterwards and I didn’t care to sit with my class, I wanted to sit with you. You attended numerous chapels at NCA, and was present for every graduation.

I was never ashamed of seeing Providence church bus parked in the front of the school yard. You were always early and if we

were late coming to the bus, you’d make sure to tell us, “Be in front”. I was scared though, you sure could speed in the bus and the little aqua car.

I watched your love for me transcend into your love for Kadin. I made sure Kadin understood that she must never leave the house unless she kissed you goodbye. Which was easy because she loved you too. To see you cry when I told you Kadin was moving with me to Orlando broke my heart, but I assured you that she would be back. Me and grammy had to lie to stop you from crying again. Whenever someone asked what my name was, you may have not known it right away, but you would respond Kadin’s mother.

Granddaddy I always said that I wanted my future husband to look at me the way you look at grammy. The love you have for her is unmatched. God knew exactly what He was doing when he allowed her shoe to pop. You have demonstrated what a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather should be. No one will ever fill your shoes. I am overjoyed that you are walking the streets of gold. I can imagine the first thing you wanted to do was see the print of the nail that was in His hands. To see your Savior’s face and receive your reward in heaven, I bet you are crying tears of jubilation right now. My only wish is that you would be here to see me achieve one more milestone.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love my grandparents. You will always be MY JOE!

I LOVE YOU ETERNALLY! Nachy

THE STORY BEGAN –

Day 1 of my birth, you were the first male exposure outside the womb that I had, and I know now, that it would be the avalanche of moments that forever shaped my perception of the world and how I chose to interact with it. My first unconscious exposure to a love that transcended the issues that were being faced, at the time. No one, family or stranger was exempt from your respectful correction. I’ve never seen you yell or react in a way that would create a sense of fear. Whenever I or any cousins were asked to pick a switch or sit down in a chair and be still, we Always knew it was warranted. For me, at least, any expression of frustration, I could see the process in your face of being mindful of how it was outwardly expressed.

There were times when I questioned why you never intervened in domestic disputes, but now that I’m older and more exposed to the world, I understand. I’m sure life tested you in it’s own way, but the way you chose to rise above will forever be a pillar for my own decision making skills. You always seemed to listen and observe first, but when you spoke, lol, it was always sure to be a sermon. No matter the place.

I’m blessed to be one of the few grandchildren with not just one, but two nicknames. It’s interesting to think back now, I’ve never heard you say my actual name. The story of my nickname’s origin began on a Sunday day, arriving at what we all call “grammies house” and you were sitting in your rocking chair on the second floor balcony. There’s a lot about my childhood that I don’t remember, but I never forgot this day. Immediately when I saw you, and I must have only been 7 or 8, I proceeded to tell you

of my adventures at Disney World. Excited and ecstatic, I said, “Granddaddy, I saw Mickey mouse!” and continued with a story of watching a parade and enjoying the adventures of Disney world. I’m guessing he chuckled and responded, “Oh really, is that so?” and my response was, “I serious, ya know!” and there you have it, an entire life being called serious, but only by my granddad.

For the second name, the story goes. I came home from college, I don’t remember the exact year, and I was greeted by my grandfather in the kitchen and he said, “I’m going to start calling you Celestia”. From what I understand, he changed the name because he felt I was becoming too serious. Celestia reflected the new person I had become, being off in another country by myself; I was expanding and the sky was the first stop before the cosmos. Why exactly he chose Celestia, I never remembered to ask.

I had hoped I would have gotten the honor of having you walk me down the aisle or holding and blessing my offspring with your love. From your sticky beard, to your light finger bites. I’m humbled by being able to experience affection and love from a pillar of your calibre. For you my love, just as your daughters looked out for you, I will do the same for men of your lineage; and by extension all the men you’ve inspired. If only to just passively cover them with thankful prayers.

You set such a high bar and I accept the challenge You lead with such immense examples both personally and professionally and I am honored to continue and create my own legacy.

I love you Granddaddy

Signed Serious and now your Celestia

The Lord, my Savior, my Jesus, my King, bless these hands and cause them to be a tremendous blessing for others in lifting him up so that He would see of their commitment to Him as their Savior and Lord and so that the family will not be disjointed but we shall all; mom and dad, children and grandchildren, spend eternity in heaven someday praising him forever.

Sheena ELIZABETH ANGELIQUE ZONICLE Daughter

DADDY,

I have always and will always love and honor you. I want to thank my heavenly Father for such a wonderful earthly father.

Jesus said in John 14:9 “...anyone who has seen me has seen the Father...” Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1 “...follow me as I follow Christ”

Have I seen the Father? Have I been discipled to be an imitator of Christ? I will look at the life you lead, then I will answer my question.

Daddy these are some of the traits, qualities, and attributes I have seen in you. I have seen unconditional love, commitment to the gospel and Jesus’ command to make disciples, what we often refer to as the “great commission”. I have seen your commitment to family. I have seen you lead a disciplined life in personal relationships, in finances, in prayer/devotion and personal health.

Daddy one of my first and fondest memories of you is one where you are holding my hand and taking me to preschool. I felt so proud, so happy and so complete as I walked. I still feel the love and admiration for you today as I felt over 50 years ago. I remember how you would always leave a morsel of food on your plate to share with us. Although the food came from the same pot, the portion you left always tasted better. Just as you shared your meal with me, I witness on many occasions you sharing your meal with the grandchildren too. I felt your love and appreciation. I witness how you would stop and share the gospel with any and everyone you meet, with love and humility. You loved everyone unconditionally, and it was felt. I knew you loved me. I knew I was “as good as

they come”

Daddy, you introduced me to the gospel, the love of God. You showed and taught me that I was His most important creation. You lead me to Christ. You discipled me. Daddy, you taught me how to pray and read the scriptures. You taught me the love of singing and praising God. I remember as a child, waking up early every Sunday morning for devotion with the family. Even in the most recent years, you still had prayer and devotion with the family. When I chose to dedicate my children, every single one back to the Lord, you were the person who prayed for them and prayed with me. Daddy I don’t do it every Sunday as you did with me, but I have devotion with my children. I sing, pray and read God’s word with them. I make every effort to take them to church for Sunday school and worship. I expose them to vacation bible school. I too am trying to follow in your footsteps to rear and discipline them. As you did with me. You also taught me to be bold and fearless, and to share my faith with others.

Daddy, I remember our family time. I remember as a child going to the beaches. You held out your arms and taught me how to swim. I remember getting in your car visiting other family members; distant or immediate family members, everyone felt close. I remember going with you to visit close friends. Going with you to the barbershop was another delightful experience. You showed me that developing and nurturing relationships was/is important. Thank you for instilling in me the value of family unity, cooperation and support. I can clearly remember working with you

and other siblings on the homestead; because of that I learnt the value of working together and embracing hard work.

Daddy you were a true giver all your life. You lead by example. As head of our household, mom and my siblings followed your giving spirit. Even to this day we continue to be a giving, supportive family. Because of your example I made the decision to be “ a giver, not a taker”. You showed me not only to give my possession but also my time. I saw how giving lead to blessings, over and over again. You showed me how to dedicate a portion of my resources back to the Lord. You showed me that if I put my trust in God all of my needs will always be met. I remember whenever you couldn’t remember where you put money, you didn’t get upset; you just knew God would provide. You taught me the value of saving, and preparing for the future. Some of your financial wisdom, I’m still working on, but you taught me and for that I am forever thankful.

Daddy you were one of the strongest healthiest men I ever knew. I can remember you working in the garden, pulling branches, tieing them up, retraining them to grow in the direction of your choosing. Whenever you harvested your produce, be it bananas, soursop, avocados and tamarind to name a few, you always shared with relatives and friends. I also remember going to the tamarind tree, breaking and plaiting thin flexible branches for other purposes. Daddy you enjoyed good, good tasting and appetizing food. It was my pleasure preparing various dishes and natural drinks for you and mom. It gave me much satisfaction when you

“cleaned the plate“ that was my litmus to determine the quality of the meal. You were always thankful, even for a glass of water. You never forget to thank you. Daddy I could go on and on about how you have impacted my life for the better. For that I will always be thankful. Like Paul, you lead by example. I am honored to follow you. Like Jesus said; if you see me, you have seen the Father. Daddy in you I have seen the Father. Thank you Heavenly Father for such a man.

TRIBUTE FROM JAMAL TAYLOR, ADOPTED SON :

“Mr. Zonicle was the spiritual foundation of the Zonicle family, he was a family man, a great father and a wonderful husband. He always proclaimed that Jesus Christ is Lord! Mr. Zonicle loved his back yard garden, he successfully grew just about everything out there including peaches at one point. My natural Mom would hand me across the wall as a baby, and leave me in the care of Mrs. Zonicle. I spent many days of my childhood in the Zonicle household, Mr. and Mrs. Zonicle took me in their home and treated me as if I were their own. Mr Zonicle always had spiritual guidance advice for you. When I’d run into him during my adult years at Mrs. Zonicle’s ‘Take-Away’, you were guaranteed a minimum of an hour’s sermon, or at least until Mrs. Zonicle said: “Now Joe, that’s enough!”. Mr. Zonicle was a God- fearing and family man. His life and devotion to God and family should serve as blueprint to all men. Mr. Zonicle lived a long, healthy and happy life, he had a bounce when he walked. And so today we celebrate his life and his contributions to his family and country. May he rest in eternal peace.”

WanzaJURUSHA MUNROE

Daughter

Ican truly say that I was blessed with one of the world’s greatest fathers. Daddy demonstrated in his everyday life devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ his Saviour and unwavering love to my mother. Daddy was a sacrificial provider, he made sure all our necessities were met even to the extent of self-denial. I knew I was special to him from my earliest memories. I could remember sleeping on his chest. I remember the thickly sliced homemade peanut butter sandwiches from Aunt Ester that he would bring for me when he worked with Uncle George. I remember the KFC doughnuts and vanilla milkshakes, Mortimer’s peanuts and Christmas red and white peppermint candies.

Each grandchild was precious to you, when they were little you would ask for a bite of the finger or 5 to10 kisses. But most of all daddy demonstrated service to Almighty God and practiced the Great Commission. When asked, ‘how are you doing’ your reply would always be ‘I am in the Lord’s hands’. Daddy, you need no longer long to see your mother and father, son Joseph Jr., your siblings, Aphia, Kevinique, Jodi, old pastor friends, sisters and brothers in law or all those loved ones who went to heaven before you. I am assured that you are now a part of the ‘great cloud of witnesses’ cheering us on to continue the fight of faith.

I love you but the Triune God loves you infinitely more. Your Baby, Wanza Capanza Sweet Child

A TRIBUTE TO THE THE ONLY GRANDFATHER I EVER KNEW

You may have left from this world, but you will never leave from my heart. With each new day that arises I miss you more & more. I’ll always remember your playful arm bites, your infectious smile and just your nod of approval with anything I did. What hurts me the most is that I wasn’t there to say goodbye. I love you but we know that Jesus loves you best, and he knew that it was time for you to take your well deserved rest. I’ll cherish the memories of us two forever, until the day we are all together.

I know that you are always here with me, but please give Kevinique a big hug for me!

Love you always, Mel

Joseph Alexander Zonicle Was No Ordinary Man. He was a Kingdom builder a loving husband, an excellent father not only to his children but to his nieces and nephews alike. Uncle Joe was an evangelist to the core I have never seen anyone witness about the Lord like him. He took the great command to go into all the world and preach The gospel very seriously, it did not matter who you were or where the occasion , he shared his faith.

I had the privilege of travelling with him on many mission trips he referred to us on the team as MIP Lydia or what- ever your name was and he used the abbreviation to lead the conversation and witness for The Lord. We experienced many miracles on those trips such as the bus turning over and us running out of gas and coasting into the gas station.

Whenever I visited him after he had retired he would remind me to lift- up the Saviour. He truly forth A good fight and finished his course.

Uncle Joe wanted no accolades, he simply wanted to glorify his Jesus. He was a rare gift to the Bahamas I could only imagine the reunion in heavens with his family and loved ones, may his soul rest in peace.

TRIBUTE FROM JOANNE G. ROLLE, BEST FRIEND OF NIECE LYDIA ZONICLE

WALLACE:

“Uncle Joe as I called him because of my friend and sister in Christ, his Neice Lydia, was a LEGEND in every sense of the word. Uncle Joe was “24/7” and “365 days” when it came to Evangelism. He ALWAYS wanted to be CERTAIN that everyone’s HEART was right with God.”

Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 vs 1 - 2 declares, “To every thing there is a season and a time and to every Purpose under the heavens”.

“A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted”.

My Dearest Uncle Joe. I would like to Thank you for your words of Wisdom, Insight and encouragement that you have always spoken over my life. I remember the last words of impartation that you had over me which was and I quote “Lord Make Her a Blessing”.

Uncle Joe you have fought the fight, you have finished your course, so now receive your reward from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So until we meet again in heaven, take your rest.

A TRIBUTE TO MY DEAR COUSIN BISHOP JOSEPH ZONICLE.

Today my family and I salute a giant of a man, a motivator, an encourager, an example to emulate. He was a man of integrity, a brave soldier of the cross, a trailblazer, expositor of the gospel nationally and internationally. He loved his family and his God dearly and preached Christ without compromising. He was well respected in his community and society at large. His jovial tenacious smile was captivating that makes one smile in return. He was well loved by his family, church and extended family. Cousin Joe again I say I salute you for your unselfish service to your God. You have fought a good fight and have ran your race well. Take your well deserved rest until we meet again in Heaven.

From your Cousin Inez Smith Moss

OUR UNCLE JOE! MY UNCLE JOE!!

Uncle Joe, after your passing, I went back, way back in my memory of you and could only smile to myself. I remembered how you took my first born, Addis, into your arms and held him, like he was your first grand son. You held him so gentle and cared for him, like no other. I am forever grateful. You were my Mighty Oak, standing tall and strong, supporting me.

You were very stern and the love you displayed for God, Aunt Stella, your children and family, were next to none.

You did it your way and it was always outstanding. I will always remember your encouraging words to seek and serve the Lord and there’s no other way but with Jesus.

You showed your love by displaying it in your actions and with that I know I can’t go wrong. Respecting you as our Godly Uncle, was so easy, because of how you lived. You were genuine, an original, God-fearing, honest and most of all loving to all you came in contact with. I say thank you Uncle Joe, I will truly miss you but your purpose on earth has been fulfilled. I know weeping may endure for a night, but joy will come in the morning.

Until then, the love will remain in my heart....

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbes, 22-6

This proverb came to mind Uncle Joe as I sat down to write this tribute. You touched so many lives by your selfless and countless acts of care and kindness, always giving and never expecting any favors in return. Your dedication to the work of God, your family and any one you met, always encouraging persons to make sure get to know Jesus as your Lord and Savior and live only for him, is what set you apart. You were a Giant in the Kingdom of God, you worked and labored, setting the path for many other to live a life pleasing to God.

The way you lived your Life is a living testimony for so many young men and women you took under your wings.

Uncle Joe you were and will always be an inspiration me, You have left a void in the family that will never be filled.

While we mourn today, we also take comfort in the fact that your mission on earth have been fulfilled. We thank the Lord for your life and bid you farewell until we meet again.

Love, Your Niece

It is finished, The battle is over

It is finished, There’ll be no more war

It is finished, the end of the conflict, It is finished, and Jesus is Lord!

We, The Carey Family, thank God for the life of Our Uncle, Bishop Joseph A. Zonicle.

To us you were an uncle, ONE IN A MILLION! You were humble, kind, loving and caring.

For as long as we can remember, you preached the word of God in its fullness. Now you have gone to reap your Crown of righteousness, which the Lord Himself will give to you. You touched so many lives by your selfless and countless acts of kindness. Uncle Joe, you have left a void in our family that will never be filled

While or family mourns today, we take comfort in the knowledge that your mission on this earth has been fulfilled.

I can remember as a child, coming to Nassau from Eleuthera with my mom, Hazel to visit you and my Auntie. We were always met with a big hug and a warm smile. You were kind, hospitable and loving to us. Those days I will never forget.

God decided to take you to heaven to join our dad and mom, our grandparents, Edward and Faydora Belle, our sister Estella, and our little brother Hartman. Oh yes, and our dear Auntie Eugie. Please give them a big hug for us. Tell them we miss them so much!

To our Aunt Stella and the children, we say please be assured that we know that grief is a great burden. We pray that God will comfort and be with you and even through the darkest valley, you will have no fear, for God promised to be with you even to the ends of the earth.

It is finished, the battle is over, It is finished, there’ll be no more war. It is finished, the end of the conflict, It is finished, and Jesus is Lord.

May his Soul Rest in Peace and Rise In Glory

“Above all I am expecting to see my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who died and gave up His sinless life for a sinner like me so that I can have an eternity in heaven praising Him who has been so kind and good to me. So when it pleases the Lord to take me, do not weep, do not cry because I will be going home, sweet home, to be with my Jesus, to praise him forever and ever.

“Naturally, when we get to heaven it is going to be an everlasting togetherness. In the meantime, I greatly appreciate your love, even as I lay here helpless. But the Lord is with you.

Whatever happens...whatever He does to and for me, you will be forever united to me. None of us are here to stay.

I might leave you but when we join up in heaven together, it’s going to be praising our King of kings for all eternity. So I want you to know how much I appreciate your kindness and your love through the years.

But one day...one day we will be gathered together in heaven and there we will praise our King of kings the Lord Jesus.

Thank you

Your Tributes, recollections, and well wishes, verbal, tangible and spiritual through Prayers, are testimony to the fact that, in Eternity, long before the foundation of the world, God set for a plan and a purpose for the life and legacy of Bishop Joseph Alexander Zonicle that was to shape the very foundation of our Country and reverberate into the global community. Over 102 years, the culmination of his Life showed us all the excellence and magnificence that awaits each of us if we too have the courage to walk boldly in our Divine Destiny.

He was “my Joe!” As Husband, he was my Love, my Companion, my Covering. I know his partnership, his leadership, his parenting, his pastorship, his friendship, his service, his character. He showed us how to love in the face of hate; fight in the face of adversity; how to walk courageously in the face of fear; forgive in the face of betrayal and derision. His voice will never fade from my ears, or, in the consciousness of others.

His memory will never fade from any of our hearts.

I would like to express my humble gratitude and sincere appreciation to those who, in one way or another, provided my family and I with the support and prayers that have comforted us in our time of sorrow. Your prayers and most especially your presence, in coming to see us, in attending the Memorial and Official Services to celebrate Joe’s Life, have meant the world to us.

Joe was my world and this has been one of the most difficult losses that I have ever had to manage. Although my family and I are still mourning, our spirits are lifted knowing that Joe will always be remembered and loved by so very many of you.

I ask that you keep each of us in your thoughts and prayers as we continue to navigate this time of challenge and new beginnings. May you accept the challenge to perpetuate Joe’s spirit of faith and love in your life and the lives of all you touch.

May God bless and keep you in His Perfect Peace.
