Capturing Beauty With Just One Shot
BY ALLYSON MATTINGLY
Recognized for fine art portraits of distinction, Stephanie Gilmore specializes in photographing babies, children, families, high school seniors, college graduates, professional headshots, and content creators. For over two decades, the definition of beauty has been the cornerstone of Stephanie Gilmore Photography: the quality that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is associated with such properties as harmony of form or color, excellence of artistry, truthfulness, and originality.
LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
HEADSHOTS
Stephanie first made her mark in the Tri-State area of Kentucky, West Virginia, and Ohio in 2002, and like many photographers, her children were the initial catalyst. “I had taken photography courses as a graphic design student in college, but it wasn’t until my favorite local photographer, Winnie Greer, moved from my hometown of Ashland to Lexington that I decided to hone my own photography skills” explains Stephanie. “I sharpened my skills in order to take better photographs of my daughters, but ended up opening my own studio!”
Two years into her trade, Stephanie joined the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and attended her first state convention and print competition, where she was awarded Kentucky Photographer of the Year. Stephanie’s image, A Coy Cowboy, took home the top prize her first year in PPA, the highly coveted Kodak Gallery Award. “It was after this unexpectedly quick rise and recognition that I was invited to teach at a convention in San Antonio, Texas” says Stephanie. Now, Stephanie has presented at photography conferences all over the country, earned degrees for both a Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman, has been published in several national magazines, and
is one of the fifteen photographers featured in the book Professional Children’s Portrait Photography: Techniques and Images from Master Photographers.
“In addition to never ending education in a field with ever evolving advancements in technology, my photographic style relies heavily on the relationships I build with my clients” Stephanie smiles. “My ultimate goal for every session is to create portraiture that uplifts and makes my clients feel their most beautiful.” Stephanie accomplishes this goal through the authentic rapport she establishes with her clients, which leads to a relaxed, comfortable environment where clients can reveal their genuine spirit and beauty.
Now, Stephanie has moved to Lexington to continue her photography, but will forever be thankful for the early influences of photographers like Winnie Greer and Bev and Tim Walden. “The Waldens instilled in me a spirit of giving back, as well as the importance of building relationships through our profession” says Stephanie. “I’m deeply honored by all my clients who continue to put their trust in me to create memories that will last a lifetime, it’s an extreme privilege that I will never take for granted.”

NEWBORN
The biggest runway trends for this year featured tailored separates for men and women. While suiting has always been on-trend for women, this year’s styles for her definitely play on a more masculine look. From cargo pants to power suits, fashion is undoubtedly making the world your boardroom, ladies. Here are some fabulous looks that will help you work this trend into your wardrobe!
Delphine linen trench vest and Heritage expedition linen pant (available at Banana Republic)
Himspiration
While you’re probably no stranger to blazers and suit pants, you may be new to going all-in on the menswear look. Many of us have been steered away from certain silhouettes. This is the year to shed that shyness and try something bold!
Suiting is all about clean lines. If you haven’t made friends with a local tailor, now’s the time. Having things fitted perfectly to your body will instantly elevate your look. (We promise it’s less pricey that you always assumed it would be, and it can actually save you money; you won’t have pieces languishing in your closet that you don’t feel comfortable in, and you can have pieces tailored again as the current trend – and your figure – changes.)
We love details that give clothes a little more definition and structure. The two looks to the left both feature built-in belts that cinch the waist in. Look for bold collars, shoulder epaulettes, visible pockets, piping, pleating and more.
For summer, we love breezy jumpsuits, sleeveless vests and suiting shorts. They’re the playful way to stay cool while rocking an executive flair.

TOP Styling Tips:
• Don’t be afraid to play around with extremes when you’re styling your look. Pair menswear with ultra-feminine touches or even streetwear-inspired pieces for an exciting contrast that will catch everyone’s eye.
• Wearing heels that match your trousers creates a long visual line that makes your legs look phenomenal!
• On the flip side, constrasting your accessories adds a playful edge that serious suiting can lack. It’s all about knowing your audience – and your personal style.
• With menswear, always carry an interesting handbag. Bags with curves are very on-trend right now, and offer the perfect contrast to the architectural lines of suiting.
• Never gotten into scarves? This is the year to try it! Whether tied around your neck, decorating your bag or sprucing up your ponytail, silk scarves are a timeless staple that will bring a punch of style to your look.

Entreprenuership 101:
Tips to help you become your own boss someday
by amanda harper
If it was easy, everyone would do it. But if you aspire to become an entrepreneur, we’re guessing you’re the sort of person who remains undaunted in the face of challenges, disappointment and setbacks. If your dream is to have the best boss in the world – yourself – here are some things to think about before diving in.
Connect
The most important thing you can do as a future entrepreneur? Get to know current entrepreneurs! Connecting with people who are living the life you aspire to will help you better understand how to make it happen. These are the people who will help you hone your processes and avoid some of the pitfalls of going it alone. That said, don’t expect your small biz friends to do the work for you – and certainly not for free. Even if someone is interested in becoming a mentor to you or assisting you in launching your business, compensate them for their time, wisdom and support.
Build a Team
The idea of doing it all yourself is admirable, but the reality is that you will have certain needs that you won’t have the skills to meet. More importantly, when you need those services, you will want to have someone in your corner who you already trust and who understands your business. From your lawyer to your accountant, your banking specialist to your insurance agent, make sure you are working with people whose goals align with your own.
Truly Understand Your Idea
Yeah, yeah, you’re certain you’re sitting on a billion-dollar idea. But do you really, truly understand how your idea would translate into a business? The process of constructing your business plan will ultimately highlight questions you don’t have answers to. Take every opportunity to consider and define aspects of your business’s identity so that you understand it from every angle. If you hope to secure funding for your idea, you will need to have answers to any question that might arise. Another way of putting it: how can anyone else understand your business if you don’t?!
According to Indeed.com, you should at least be able to answer four questions: why, what, who and how? Why is your business needed, and what need does it fill? What is the product or service you’ll be providing? Who is your specific target customer audience? How will you develop your product or service and deliver it to your clients?

Books Every Entrepreneur Should Read:
Understand Your Competition
One of the ways you can build your business’s identity is to look around the market and figure out what needs aren’t being met elsewhere. This step can enrich your purpose and motivation, giving new meaning to all of your hard work.
It’s also important to consider that if your business is a big hit, there will be others who try to imitate your success. Clearly differentiating yourself now will help preserve your business down the road.
Understand Your Customer
I don’t know how many times I’ve heard a business owner say their target customer is “everyone!” While every business owner would ideally love to serve everyone on the planet, that’s unrealistic: a well-traveled 70-yearold retired executive has very different needs than a 19-year-old frat boy on a paper-thin budget. You can’t be everything for everyone.
Every major corporation defines their target customer as an essential piece of their brand development. They “know” their customer, down to the clothes they wear, the car they drive and the mattress they sleep on. This helps them steer their decision anytime a question arises.
One pitfall you may encounter with this strategy? Don’t base the ideal customer on an actual person you know –especially not you! Why? The answers to your questions should be based on market research, trends and in-store sales, not your own preferences. (Yes, we know your taste is impeccable, but you can’t be the entire brand.)
Look Out for “Magical” Thinking
There’s nothing wrong with being optimistic about your venture. But be aware of any areas where you’re being a little too hopeful. For instance, do you have an “if you build it, they will come” attitude toward acquiring new customers? Is your answer to “what if” simply, “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it?” Do you believe everything will just kinda work out? This kind of thinking puts on rose-colored glasses to avoid doing necessary problem-solving. Have faith that everything will go well, but know that even good luck needs a little heavy lifting!
Never Stop Learning
One of the most important roles of an entrepreneur is to be a student of business. Even people who have owned their businesses for decades are continually learning new ways to stay relevant, innovative and responsive. The work of an entrepreneur is never truly “done.” •

Rivard Fine Jewelry
As far back as he can remember, jewelry has been an essential part of Brandon Rivard’s life. Starting in the family business, Rivard Fine Jewelry, as a teenager, he has spent decades perfecting his craft and learning more about how to deliver the best value and quality to customers every day.
“We pride ourselves in providing the Central Kentucky area with the highest-quality designer jewelry, without big price markups,” Rivard explained. “The Kentucky culture is ingrained in our business and I think that really shows in our dedication to providing our customers with excellent service. To us, our customers are an extended part of our family and we’re honored to be a part of such special moments in their lives.”
With indispensable guidance from his parents, and nearly 40 years of success at the family-owned store to tap into, Rivard has found that a combination of independence and attention to customers allows his business to maintain its sterling reputation.
“I would always recommend working with an independent jeweler,” he advised. “You will always get a much higher level of expertise and service. Our doors are always open to new customers and it would be our pleasure to offer any guidance or help with any of your jewelry needs.”

Fayette County Public Schools
Serving more than 41,000 students, Fayette County Public Schools is known for outstanding educational offerings, highachieving students, exemplary staff, engaged families and involved community partners. As the second-largest school district in the Commonwealth and the second-largest employer in Fayette County, FCPS drives innovation and success in the region under the visionary leadership of superintendent Demetrus Liggins with the support of the Fayette County Board of Education.
“My mother taught me the value of hard work and my grandmother taught me that education had the potential to transcend societal barriers and unlock opportunities that were otherwise inaccessible to me as a poor black child growing up in an East Texas county named for a Confederate general,” Liggins explained. “These core beliefs led me to choose a career in education, with the hope of utilizing my own experiences and knowledge to empower students to fulfill their unlimited potential.”
After receiving input from more than 17,000 students, families, staff, and community members, Dr. Liggins led the development of the district’s New Way Forward strategic plan, which outlines the path to even greater success in the future.
“Regardless of the title I hold, I consider myself a teacher first, then a facilitator, a mentor and a role model, aiming to create a positive and inclusive learning environment that will cultivate the growth of every student,” he concluded.

Lavish Nails
As the eldest among her siblings, Anna’s childhood in Cambodia was shaped by her parents’ livelihood at the local fish market, where she would assist in selling the day’s catch. It was there that her drive and entrepreneurial spirit was born. In Cambodia, Anna met her beloved husband, Yii. Together, they now have three beautiful daughters making their lives a busy, but rewarding, whirlwind of parenting and managing their own business.
After opening the first Lavish Nails seven years ago, Anna now runs a thriving business and is watching her goals take shape. Connecting her neighbors with Kentucky Proud seasonal products, farm goods and local meats not only allows Smith to satisfy their hunger for quality produce, but delivers them the chance to support the operations and artisans that make this region so unique.
“Consumers should look to support local farmers each chance they get,” she said. “Look for folks who are passionate about growing your food and providing the education on the process it takes to get from the farm to your table.”

Lifstyl Real Estate
After years in the nursing profession, Liz Hodge realized she could help people in a career that would allow her to tap into her expertise in a new way. So, ten years ago, she joined the realty profession and today serves clients as a team leader of Winners Circle Realty Group and Lifstyl Real Estate.
“I realized that both industries were about helping people and I loved that I still used my education and nurturing skills to assist my clients as I did my patients,” Hodge explained. “The best advice I can offer to other business people is to be the expert in your field and always seek to improve. I’m constantly looking for education and professional improvement to keep me at the highest level of my profession.”

“When searching for a realtor to assist you in your real estate search or investments, look for an individual who has a high level of professionalism and extensive experience,” she recommended. “I pride myself on my hustle and grit that I use for my clients to get them the very best outcome!”

Joey’s Carpet Care
Over the last four decades, Joey’s Carpet Care & MicroSeal has evolved from Lexington’s best-known and mosttrusted carpet cleaning company to a full-serve business that offers a wide range of residential and commercial services. As its second-generation owner, virtually born into the business, Ben Pickett is leading that evolution while maintaining the level of service and care that has made Joey’s one of the region’s most successful institutions.
“You can depend on us, not only for your carpet, but your fine area runs, upholstery, hard floors, dryer vents, air ducts, exterior surfaces (including roofs, siding, concrete, etc.) and 24/7 emergency water damage restoration as well,” Pickett explained. “We leverage our experience to provide expert solutions to our clients.”
Over the years, Pickett has found that there is no substitute for a genuine desire to meet client needs by hearing them out and delivering unparalleled satisfaction.
“We love to speak to homeowners about their needs and answer specific questions they might have, and that’s also why we offer complimentary estimates,” he said. “Anytime you’re shopping for home services, you want to make sure the company has the expertise, the proper equipment and a reputation for taking care of their customers.”

At Jeff Ruby Culinary Entertainment, one of Lexington’s most soughtafter and luxurious restaurant groups, Farris Huehls leads with an understanding that it’s not merely about delivering delicious food, but about delivering unforgettable experiences.
“Some might say I’m in the restaurant business or steakhouse business, but in reality, I’m in the people business,” Huehls explained. “As Mr. Ruby would say himself, ‘If people are hungry, they go to the refrigerator.’ Giving our guests an experience — the Jeff Ruby experience, that they take with them forever — that’s truly my business.”
Huehls entered the hospitality industry upon graduating from college and moving to New York City, finding a passion for the daily challenges and the honest connections she’s made with people over food and drink. Alliance Financial Planning
As an independent firm, Alliance Financial Planning has the freedom to search the wider market to identify the best possible strategies for clients across their investment and insurance needs. In offering her advice to those seeking out financial planning assistance, the firm’s founder Diane Verhalen recommends taking a similar approach.
“Do some research on common questions to ask and come to the meeting prepared to interview your prospective financial planner so they can attempt to earn your business,” she suggested. “Also, reach out to multiple people in the profession and see who is most responsive for an initial meeting. Beware anyone who only offers one solution to your goal.”
After earning her degrees in finance and accounting, Verhalen has served as an independent financial professional ever since. And throughout her career, she has developed the skills necessary to work with clients and act as their financial advocate.
“I’ve had several good mentors along the way and the best lesson I’ve learned is to listen more than I talk,” she recalled. “If you listen to people and help them with what they actually care about, then you can work toward earning their trust.”

Keller Williams Legacy Group
Melissa Brown has always dreamed of being a realtor, and after receiving her license in 2018, she realized that dream with Keller Williams Legacy Group. Today, she operates her realty business from her personal office in her hometown of Mt. Sterling, but taps into the wider resources of the nearby Keller Williams office whenever needed.
“One advantage that really helps my clients is that I am not designated to any one location and I love to help buyers and sellers in and around Lexington, where I’ve been quickly building more clientele,” Brown explained.
“My clients appreciate my willingness to travel, dedicated professionalism, and determination to meet all their expectations.”
For those seeking to make a real estate transaction in an increasinglycompetitive market, Brown recommends scheduling a consultation that will allow her to walk them through the steps involved.
“The most important step is the first initial meeting,” she added. “This allows me to read and better understand my clients as I learn their needs and wants when it comes to making that final decision. Together, we can achieve the ultimate goal!”

For more than 20 years, Gabe Prewitt has been drawn to The Red Mile, the centuries-old horse racing track that serves as one of the most historic institutions in Lexington offering over 900 Gaming Terminals and Simulcasting.
“I moved across from The Red Mile when I came to the University of Kentucky in the fall of 2001 and my first college job was as a mutuel teller there,” Prewitt recalled. “I graduated in 2005 with a business management degree from UK and continued to have a relationship with The Red Mile as the track announcer as my career took me all over the country.”

Oak & Moore
With uniquely-crafted tables, stools, stands, bar carts, trays and more, Lane Moore is refurbishing bourbon barrels to instill Kentucky’s heritage and culture directly into timeless decor at his business Oak and Moore.
“I knew I desired to have a career that was specific to where I wanted to live,” Moore told KSR earlier this year, describing his decision to launch Oak and Moore as a recent graduate of the University of Kentucky. “Since bourbon is huge in Kentucky, I thought, ‘Why not make things from bourbon barrels?,” since I’ve always liked working with my hands.”
Now, Moore’s creations have become wildly popular thanks to the pride he takes in his process and the quality of the resulting products. Each barrel he uses is dried to the perfect humidity to ensure the resulting crafts last and each product is engraved with the initials “KY” to demonstrate their authenticity. And this dedication to quality has been quickly recognized, as Moore earned the Patron’s Pick of the 2023 Masters of Craft Awards for Keeneland Mercantile.
As his expertise and business only grow from here, it’s clear that Moore is a craftsperson pushing Kentucky’s history into the next era.

Welch cherishes the opportunity to help her clients reach their home-ownership goals, and encourages anyone she might help to reach out to learn more.
“Contacting me is the first step to achieving your dream of owning a home,” she said. “People think they need to wait until they have everything figured out before contacting a mortgage lender to be pre-qualified. Driven by a passion for design and gorgeous magazines for as long as she can remember, Haley Norris has the pleasure of creating the pages of TOPS Magazine as the Vice President of Production at TOPS Marketing Group. She creates advertorial designs, client advertisements and additional content with an unparalleled attention to detail and natural knack for showcasing the best of Lexington and bringing those stories on the page to life.
“Throughout college, I always knew I wanted to design beautiful pages for a magazine and was lucky enough to begin that career with TOPS after graduating,” Norris explained, nearly 10 years later.
“In every design decision, I bring an understanding of the power of typography and an approach that each project is a blank canvas for something unique.”
With creativity being a lifelong pursuit and passion, Norris also thrives through another outlet that is her wedding planning company, Haley Michelle Designs. Building it from scratch and 7 years later of experience and success, HMD has become something Norris is proud to call her own. Norris offers design and planning services for engaged couples across the state and beyond, which continues to flourish her design experience that in turn enhances her work with TOPS Marketing Group.
“When we conclude one issue and begin production on the next, I get inspired and excited all over again,” she explained.

“
Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person.“
Richard E. Rogers leans on a foundational lesson he learned early on to deliver thoughtful, and effective legal advice in the legal and real estate fields to his valued clients today.
“I learned at an early age in life what most people consider to be their greatest assets: their families and the homes or farms in which they live,” Rogers recalled. “This understanding in combination with my longing to help others, is what led me to a career in the fields of law and real estate. As poor of an analogy as it might be, I can literally help anyone with a tailored experience from cradle to grave, no matter what their situation may be.”
Practicing law privately in the specialties of real estate, estate planning and probate; serving as in-house counsel for Foundation Title & Escrow Series, LLC; and as acting Principal Broker of Rogers & Co. Real Estate; Rogers offers holistic legal services in some of the region’s most important sectors, advocating for clients and acting as their closest ally along the way.
“The culminating philosophy behind the organizations I am proud to be a part of is quite simple,” he explained. “We strive to challenge conventional thinking by enhancing the customer/client experience, while also bettering the lives of our colleagues, customers and clients, along with all of those whom we share experiences, relationships and transactions.”
Rogers has been driven not only by the foundational lessons of his early life, but also by the example his parents set. Rogers and his siblings were taught that, no matter what they achieved personally or professionally, the most meaningful accomplishments were in how they served others. Rogers has found that he is most able to fulfill that example today by combining his growing expertise in the fields of law and real estate.
“Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person,” he reflected. “Law and real estate are ever changing, as are the people and professionals within the industries. As cliché as it sounds, the industries I currently work in truly are relationship driven. That is why I pride myself on being able to relate to as many people as I possibly can, whether it be as an attorney, fiduciary, realtor or friend.”
This emphasis on relationships, and genuine passion for serving as many different people as he can, is what makes this the place that Rogers feels most comfortable and driven to deliver his expertise.
“I love the diversity of the Lexington area, the people who call it home and the many rare attributes that make it what it is today,” he said. “It’s truly an eclectic mix of people, beautiful geography unlike any other in the world, and the many rare qualities it possesses are what make me proud to now call it home.”

Motor Lodge Luxe
Bardstown Motor Lodge o ers a comfortable yet luxurious throwback staycation experience
by Amanda Harper // photos courtesy Bardstown Motor Lodge
Summer means road trips. Whether you’re entertaining out-of-state guests or simply looking for a little Kentucky fun, Bardstown is a wonderful staycation destination. As the beating heart of Bourbon Trail, The Most Beautiful Small Town in America is the perfect home base for your travels.
If you want your bourbon infused with a little Americana, the Bardstown Motor Lodge offers a throwback vibe alongside thoroughly modern accommodations. This boutique hotel experience in downtown Bardstown was designed with the fun-loving traveler in mind, and it delivers a stay unlike anywhere else.
For the uninitiated, motor lodges are a throwback to the earliest days of cars. As Americans started hitting the open road, the need for hotel accommodations that catered to motorists arose. Bardstown Motor Lodge celebrates this tradition, giving this piece of our culture a much-needed comeback.
Part of the Common Bond Hotel Collection, Bardstown Motor Lodge offers an invigorating stay close to all the attractions you’ll want to experience. Wholly updated since its days as the Parkview Motel, rest assured that no opportunity for comfort (or style) went ignored. From retro mini-fridges and snuggly beds to a genuinely cool bathroom, the rooms are hip yet still cozy enough to offer a serene spot to crash after a long day of playing tourist. (The Common Bond is opening its second property in Louisville this fall – inside a former disco ball factory! The Myriad Hotel’s restaurant, Paseo, is already open.)
But the real magic of Bardstown Motor Lodge comes with the fun they pack into your stay. From the mid-centuryinspired breeze block-lined pool (with tons of luxurious cabana seating, complete with a pool bar) to the cozy firepits in the courtyard, you will never be bored, no matter the season. Toast S’mores over the fire, sip a drink while playing cornhole or socialize with other guests over board games in the comfy rec room. The attentive staff is on-hand to ensure that your every need is met, from ice
water and towels to carefully crafted cocktails and casual snacks.
Speaking of good eats, Bardstown has seen a huge upsurge in fine dining experiences in recent years, and Bardstown Motor Lodge is no exception. Their on-site restaurant, Toogie’s Table, offers chef-driven, seasonal dishes that will wow. Their menu features reimagined classics with a regional bent, with dishes that are innovative yet comforting and familiar. The Spring Pea Salad (snap peas, cucumber and lime labneh with bay powder, crispy shallots and a pepper vinaigrette, dusted lightly with Toogie’s signature spice) is a bright, joyful start to your meal. The Chicken & Spaetzle Dumplings (featuring a smoked chicken thigh, Trappist beer mustard in a delicious white sauce and cracklins for a salty, smoky, creamy bite) is like a warm hug on a fall evening. Even the Tavern Burger & Wedges was unforgettable (featuring peperonada, bacon jam, muenster and dijonaise).
If it’s been a while since you’ve been to Bardstown, you may remember Kurtz Restaurant, a local staple since 1937. Marilyn “Toogie” Dick inherited the restaurant and motel from her family and worked tirelessly to honor her family’s traditions while innovating to encourage the vibrant tourism industry in the area all the way up until her retirement. Now, the restaurant proudly bears her name in recognition of all she did to help the Nelson County community. That sense of togetherness is built into the eatery, which serves as a collaboration between Director of Culinary Mike Wajda, Chef de Cuisine Jeremy Frederiksen, Kentucky farmers and local distillers.
Bardstown offers a wealth of activities for any interest, from historical attractions to bourbon distilleries (natch). Nearby Bernheim Forest offers hiking and natural exploration, while area golf courses make this town a putter’s paradise. If you’re ready to plan your trip to Bardstown, start with booking a stay at Bardstown Motor Lodge and dinner reservations at Toogie’s Table – you’ll love this retro-cool experience!

Easy ways to give your home a glow-up!
BY AMANDA HARPER
Pergola
These garden and deck features offer a lot of beauty. The open framework of the top can be covered with canvas, vining plants or plexiglass to create shade and protection from rain. But many homeowners leave them open to enjoy the dappled light they provide. Pergolas may be free-standing or attached to a pre-existing structure. The open design makes them somewhat resistant to wind and heavy snow, unlike other covered structures.
The materials you use to construct your pergola greatly change the impression. Sturdy timber offers an Old World appeal while sleek steel can look more modern. Do you want a Mediterranean feel, or something like a secret spa escape?
We’re loving pergolas that offer interesting twists on the classic. Archways, rustic roofs, interesting lighting and more can enhance this outdoor feature.
Forbes estimates adding a pergola to your home typically costs between $1,500 and $6,000, depending on a number of factors. But the relaxation benefits of this exterior facelift are truly priceless!

Cupola
It’s easy to overlook your roofline as a spot for potential beautification, but it can be the site of some real magic! Cupolas are little boxes or domes that add some style to your roof. They might add ventiliation, cover unsightly appliances or offer a little skylight, but usually, they’re just there for the flair! By contrasting with the material of your roof – say, by employing copper – you can add a ton of visual interest. If you love the look of a weathervane, this is the perfect spot to place one.

Arbors & Trellises
If you love plants, arbors and trellises are your garden BFFs. Not only do they add beauty in your outdoor spaces, but they offer climbing and vining plants the chance to really shine. Generally speaking, arbors and trellises are an inexpensive way to add a big visual impact. It can take some time to get your plants trained to the framework, but it’s well worth the wait! Notice a little overlap between the design of certain arbors and pergolas? The open woodwork of a trellis often looks similar to what’s used to construct a pergola. The difference tends to be the overall size; arbors are generally fairly narrow archways whereas pergolas are intended to offer lots of sitting space beneath. And while you can use a pergola to help train plants to grow, almost all arbors and trellises are used for this purpose.

FAN t tic
It’s easy to overlook the impact your ceiling fan has on your home’s décor. After all, you hardly think about it until you need it. But innovations in recent years have led to more appealing – and more functional – fans. So if it’s been a while since you’ve swapped out yours, maybe it’s time to think about whether it’s due for a change. It’s a fairly inexpensive swap that could mean big benefits...
146 TOPS | July 2023

Indoors
We get it; thinking about the world of ceiling fans probably seems about as exciting as watching paint dry. But you’d be wrong if you just assumed not much has changed since you last had one installed. A fan isn’t just a fan anymore!
Smart technology has really changed the game for homeowners. No more teetering on a stepladder only to grab the wrong pullcord, then wonder if you just turned it “off” or on “high.” At a couple quick taps of your smart phone, you can have your fan running exactly how you want, no risk to life and limb.
How they operate has changed a lot in recent years, as well. Companies like Big Ass Fans (which, if you didn’t know, is based in Lexington) are applying lots of complicated science to develop new blades, more efficient motors and better overall designs. The benefit to you? Lower energy bills, more airflow, quieter operation and a more stunning look. No more shake, rattle and roar!
That increase in efficiency means three-blade fans are on-trend. The minimal profile means more opportunities to experiment with how the finish pairs or contrasts with your décor. Aside from the super sleek look, one of the biggest benefits is less time spent trying to clean the darn thing. Who doesn’t want that!?

Outdoors
Nothing says summer like spending time in the great outdoors. But whether you’re porch sittin’ or dining on your patio, you’re probably feeling the heat.
Outdoor fans are a time-honored Southern tradition. But gone are the days of drooping blades and inescapable squeaking! Manufacturers have heard our cries and are now offering ceiling fans specifically designed for covered outdoor spaces.
Wondering how to find your new outdoor fan? Look for models specifically marked for outdoor use. Kentucky’s high-humidity summers can wreak havoc on the inner workings of fans not specifically designed for the outdoors. Damp-rated fans can’t handle much direct exposure to rain and snow, so they’re best for screened-in porches and patios. Wet-rated fans are best for open-air structures. Pay special attention to the materials used on the blades. Thinner wood, composite and plastic blades can wilt under the heat and humidity. Sturdier natural wood, aluminum, ABS plastic and stainless steel are your best bets. If you want to go the rattan route, be sure the materials are supported by sturdy wire. But your best bet is faux made from ABS plastic; it’ll still achieve the look while standing up to the elements.
148 TOPS | July 2023
big a fans prominence home
honeywell
Use a pillowcase! Slowly slip a pillowcase around each blade, then gently press the pillowcase down with your hands, one on the top of the blade and one beneath. Pull your hands (and the pillowcase) towards you. Then take the pillowcase outside, turn it inside out, and shake all of that dust loose.
Use compressed air! Compressed air can help you clean the motor housing. It can also be used to clean any nooks and crannies you miss during regular dusting.
Wet or dry? Dry cleaning cloths can rain dust down on your space – but wet cloths can damage indoor-only fan blades. If you can’t handle all the mess of using a dry cleaning tool, make sure that your cloth is only barely damp, or use a wrung-out cleaning wipe.
A bright idea... Does your fan have a glass globe or other light shades? Unscrew or remove those to clean them; you’ll be able to truly get all of the dust out without disturbing your fan too much –and without killing your arms!

GET BACK ON Track with Tates Creek Chiropractic
BY: ALLYSON MATTINGLY
When you step foot into Tates Creek Chiropractic, you’re met with an abundance of staff ready to help you achieve your goals while exceeding your expectations. Leading Tates Creek Chiropractic’s team of talented professionals is Dr. Michael Pugh, who opened his chiropractic clinic in 2003 with the ultimate goal to help more people and help people more.
“I had no idea I was going to be a chiropractor when I grew up,” laughs Dr. Pugh. “I injured my back while in undergrad working at Applebee’s, and after a few weeks of absolute misery, I picked a chiropractor out of the phonebook, and now here we are, 33 years later.”

Joey Creekbaum III
In the beginning Tates Creek Chiropractic offered services including massage and rehabilitative exercise, and over the years, has added a large variety of services. Now, whether you’re searching for spinal decompression, whole body cryotherapy, class IV laser therapy, or need assistance with an injury, you can trust that the team at Tates Creek Chiropractic will take great care of you.
Dr. Pugh even told the TOPS team that they have recently added a Nurse Practitioner, Joey Creekbaum III, to their practice, who allows the clinic to offer even more services. Now, chiropractic patients who also have an interest in achieving a healthier lifestyle can receive services such as semaglutide-based weight loss, better known as Ozempic, platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections, hyaluronic acid gel injections, and more. “Now, we can even further assist our patients out of pain and back to living the life they want to live” explains Dr. Pugh. While most people believe chiropractors treat exclusively back pain, there is so much more that chiropractic care can achieve. Because chiropractors help to remove pressure from the nervous system, they can also influence many other conditions. In fact, Dr. Pugh told us that headaches, neck pain, back pain and sciatica make up the majority of conditions they treat, but they also see lots of shoulder and arm pain, knee pain, plantar fasciitis and elbow pain.
If you’re looking for a chiropractor who can magically fix your neck, back, or other body pain, look no further than Tates Creek Chiropractic. “I know there are a lot of people out there looking for a chiropractor, but they just aren’t sure who to trust,” says Dr. Pugh. “Luckily, we’re here to put both staff and patients first, willing to serve them in every way, every day.”

A COMFORTABLE LEGACY:
The Manchester Welcomes Guests To Lexington’s High-End History
Developed on the campus grounds of Central Kentucky’s first registered bourbon distillery, The Manchester is establishing its own legacy as Lexington’s first and most celebrated high-end hotel, welcoming guests to the heart of Lexington’s historic Distillery District.
The vision for this 125-room lodging began with hoteliers Nik Feldman and Hank Morris, who brought years of expertise from numerous celebrated brands across hospitality and real estate to bear as they developed The Manchester, along with its accompanying bespoke bottle shop, spirited lobby bar, unique drinking and dining spaces, restaurant and rooftop bar.
A SPIRITED PLACE. You’re cordially invited to stay a while.

A LOVE of LEXINGTON
Feldman first envisioned The Manchester in 2019, recognizing the need for a high-end hotel in Lexington, a city he had fallen in love with as an avid polo player.
“The Manchester was built out of our love for the city of Lexington,” Feldman explained. “I spent my summers here, playing polo, and have always been keenly aware of what an incredible, rare place it is. It was astonishing to me that this unique travel destination — steeped in horse racing, bourbon and Kentucky basketball — didn’t have an equally special, unique and exciting hotel at the center of it all. Because of this, The Manchester was born.”
Knowing that only the highest standards and quality in development, design and construction could make this dream a reality, Feldman teamed with Morris, his former classmate and longtime friend, and the two began on the project in earnest in 2020.
“I’m inspired by creating spaces that provide real, emotional experiences while authentically giving people a sense of place,” Morris said. “In my mind, the best way to do this is with a hotel. It’s crazy to think about, but over the coming months and years at The Manchester, lifelong friends will meet for the first time, couples will fall in love, great business deals will be made, just to name a few of the life-changing moments it will see. Being able to have influence on those types of moments for so many is really meaningful for me, and is precisely what inspires me.”

THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN KENTUCKY.
Beyond The Manchester’s historic setting or unique place in a city that calls for it, a wide range of curated experiences and thoughtful details set it apart from any other place on earth.
“The Manchester is the first of its kind in Kentucky,” Morris and Feldman said. “Whether it’s our locallyrooted design, unique food and beverage program or curated on- and off-property experiences offered, there is no other hotel quite like it.”
The pair partnered with interior designer Jenny Bukovec to craft the hotel’s soulful interiors, all of which are inspired by Lexington’s historic rickhouses and the earthy tones of the region’s surrounding landscapes and rolling hills. The space features hand-laid masonry symbolic of the Irish, hand-hewn stone walls of Kentucky’s countryside, and the entire property sports structural curvature that gives a nod to the Distillery District’s barrel-shaped tradition.
Granddam, the hotel’s 140-seat feature restaurant, offers a menu of globally-inspired takes on classical Appalachian dishes while the Lost Palm, an Art Deco rooftop bar and lounge, celebrates the spirit of 1960s South Florida horse racing culture, with a menu full of playful interpretations on classic American cocktails and an expansive view overlooking downtown Lexington.
In every feature, piece of furniture and refreshment, the founders’ celebration of Lexington is apparent.
“Though we are forging a new path in Lexington’s growing Distillery District, we’re continuously paying homage to the Bluegrass Region and its storied past,” they concluded.

Wake up, Water
It’s been said that beauty starts on the inside. And when it comes to hydration, that old adage couldn’t be any more spot-on!
Our bodies are about 60% water, and chances are, you’re not drinking enough to reap the full benefits of staying hydrated. While we’ve all heard to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, you may need more based on your health and activity level. But in case you struggle to gulp down enough h20 each day, here are some tips to stay perfectly hydrated throughout your day!
Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning gets your metabolism going and gives you a boost of energy for those mornings you can’t get out of bed. This can also help you feel less hungry throughout the day, while sipping a glass can slow you down during meal time.
Eat your Water
About 20% of our daily water comes from the food we eat, so why not increase that number? Fruits and veggies like cantaloupe, strawberries, cabbage, and spinach have a high water content that can help you meet your daily agua goal. Plus, what a delicious summer snack!
Goal Maker
You may not think it, but setting a goal can help you stay on track and motivated, setting you up for your newest healthy habit! You can do this with a water bottle marked with tracking measurements, download a hydration-tracking app, or set alarms to remind you to take a drink throughout the day.
Experiment with Flavor
Though a gulp of ice cold water is like a gift from Heaven, some people think it’s just, well…too plain. Experimenting with different flavor combinations can make your daily water goal easier to reach, plus it can take a plain beverage to a delicious new favorite. Check out some of our favorite infused water recipes...
For each of the infused water recipes below, add the ingredients to 5 cups of water in a pitcher, and allow flavors to develop for at least 3 hours in the refrigerator. Before serving, add 1 cup of ice. (adapted from Culinary Hill)

Tradition in Every Stitch with Freedman Harness
BY: ALLYSON MATTINGLY
Hand Craftsmanship. Quality. And Tradition in Every Stitch. This is the legacy of Freedman’s. A story that started over 200 years ago in 1802, and continues to the present day with the same promise, the same commitment to excellence.
Six generations of harness makers later, the modernday Freedman’s is a brand known for its legacy work in horse harness, but also for its ingenuity in show horse tack and furnishings and emerging trends in handbags, belts, and performance riding apparel.
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
From harnessing World and National Champion ponies and horses and making saddles for the trotting breed horses, to making harnesses for the famous Budweiser Clydesdales and for the Royal family, Freedman’s strives to accomplish quality every step along the way. The mission at Freedman’s is always to provide safe, comfortable, and well-made horse furnishings, rider apparel, and fashion goods that meet the standards of excellence that the brand has come to be known for. Being part of an industry of athletic and beautiful horses has engaged Freedman’s way of thinking, enriching the brand beyond just what the horses need to wear, but also what the human athletes need; their riding apparel, their fashion sense, the accessories they prefer to carry.
“I first had thoughts of doing this work for my life when I was 13,” says owner and 6th generation harness maker, David Freedman. “I had been deeply impressed by the beauty and athleticism of the horses along with the people in the industry. By the time I was 18 it became clear that I wanted to learn the trade from my father. I had embraced hand stitching at the age of 10 and everything leather was interesting to me (and still is). I never thought for a minute about continuing the family tradition and becoming the 6th generation in my family to do so until my father’s sudden passing when I was 27-years-old. Overnight, I became the leader of a luxury heritage brand.”
Please be sure to join Freedman’s on Sunday, July 9 at 2:00p for the Grand Opening Celebration of their Midway Boutique & U.S. Flagship Store.
Whether you love horses or just love quality craftsmanship and leather goods, Freedman’s just might have something that you need. Come enjoy live music, bourbon tasting, light food, and of course, the intoxicating smell of handmade leather!
To be successful in this line of work, one must know horses as well as leather and the art of crafting it. Freedman’s products are unique because of their knowledge of both. Knowledge of the product and of the horse industry allows Freedman’s to deliver on the promise of quality that is offered to customers and clients. As a leather craftsman himself, David can expertly direct the artisans that work in the shop because he also knows the trade.
While the products have changed over time, the essence remains the same: quality craftsmanship with the very finest materials. With leather production in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Freedman name still boasts the work of artisans and leather from some of the best tanneries in the world. The Boutique has been located in Midway, Kentucky for nearly 18 years, and only just this year, did Midway become the brand’s permanent home. The location for the storefront was made because the brand and product was needed and would be loved here; in Midway, in Lexington. Lexington is a thriving city and Midway is just a stone-throw’s away; with restaurants, boutiques, and beautiful landscape. “We love it here. Midway is home,” says David.
When you walk into the brand-new Freedman’s, you will find not just horse furnishings and equipment, but an assortment of hand-made belts, small leather goods and accessories, uniquely beautiful hand and travel bags, and, as expected, the same quality craftsmanship with the very finest materials.

With No Limits
For decades, Community Ventures has been on a mission to create vibrant communities across Kentucky, beginning with building healthy neighborhoods and thriving businesses. In Lexington, their efforts are most clearly on display at The MET. This East End mixed-use commercial and residential real estate development is named for its location at the corner of Midland & East Third.
The site, which welcomed residents and business owners in the fall of 2020, is now a staple of the East End community and is home to businesses like Carolyn’s Crown and Glory Hair Salon, Manchester Coffee, Albert Couture, DV8 Kitchen, and Health First. Community Ventures developed, financed, and built it to strengthen and revitalize Lexington’s East End by creating jobs and providing housing.
In addition to creating housing and job opportunities, the Community Ventures’ development also supports a blossoming artist community through organizations like Art Inc., The Artists’ Studios, Art House Kentucky, and a cluster of single-home family residences that form The Artists’ Village.
Mark Johnson, an East End native and president of Art Inc., spearheads each of these initiatives. An artist himself, Mark has been named one of the world’s Top 60 Contemporary Artists of the Year and his work has been displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. Mark attributes much of his success to those that helped him in his artist journey. He views Art Inc. and his other programs that support creatives as a means to give back and assist artists with the help they need to be successful.
Art Inc., which is supported by Community Ventures, is a non-profit marketing and business incubator committed to helping Kentucky creatives build and profit from their businesses. The organization equips emerging and established artists and creatives with the services, resources, and educational opportunities.Art Inc. supports creatives by providing access to courses that provide the tools necessary to run a successful business, space to display and sell their creations at ArtHouse Kentucky, and access to rent private art studios at The Artists’ Studios.
The Artists’ Village, which is home to well-known creatives like Kentucky’s first African American Poet Laureate Frank X Walker and hosts an annual art and music festival, slated to take place this year on August 19, 2023. To learn more about the Artists’ Village, visit https://www.artinckentucky.org/theartistsvillage.
In addition to adding shopping, retail, and an artist community to Lexington’s East End, The MET also addressed the housing needs of this community by adding 44 market-rate and affordable housing residential units, both 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom units.
Revitalizing neighborhoods requires balancing the new and the old. For the East End, that meant honoring the culture and history of the former home of Keeneland. Community Ventures celebrated the historical legacy of this community by incorporating paintings, sculptures, and poetry throughout The MET property. A mural honoring African American jockeys, a large wooden panel featuring historical and current East End streets by LaVon Williams; Black and White photographs of East End by Patrick J. Mitchell, and a poem “Ode to the East End” by Frank X Walker ensure that while the East End grows, its history will never be forgotten.
To learn more about Art Inc. or to inquire about renting an artist studio, contact Mark Johnson by phone at (859) 231 – 0054 ext. 1023 or email at mjohnson@cvky.org. Art Inc. is supported by non-profit Community Ventures.

Mark Johnson Meet...
Mark Johnson is a Lexington and East End native and is the president of Art Inc., which Community Ventures supports. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a minor in Economics. After becoming one of the youngest Vice Presidents at his bank, Johnson left the banking industry to give back to Kentucky through small and micro business development.
As an artist, Johnson was juried into the Kentucky Arts Council’s Kentucky Crafted program, one of the highest honors a Kentucky artist can receive. Johnson’s art has been displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, and ArtExpo, one of New York City’s largest art shows. He has also been recognized as one of the world’s Top 60 Contemporary Artists of the Year. In Kentucky, Johnson’s work is part of the permanent collection of Eastern Kentucky University’s John Grant Crabbe Main Library, and based on his Fountainfalls Waterdrop photography series, he was named “Photographer of The Year” by Art Design Consultants, a full-service art consulting firm and art gallery based in Ohio. In 2022, he was invited by Eastern Kentucky University, the Richmond Area Arts Council, and the NAACP of Richmond to exhibit his glasswork at an event recognizing several prominent African American artists during Black History Month.

Pickleball!
Discover the fastest-growing sport in America
by allyson mattingly | photos courtesy pickleheads
A cross between ping pong, badminton, and tennis, pickleball is a fun, easy-tolearn game that can be enjoyed well by players of any age. Even though it was invented in 1965, pickleball participation has grown an average of 158.6% over the last three years, with just over 10,000 pickleball courts in the United States! With an estimated 36.5 million pickleball players in the US, we’re sure at least a few of you readers are ready to play! Pickleheads, an online destination founded by experienced entrepreneur Brandon Mackie, is the perfect platform to find courts in Lexington, organize sessions with friends, and connect with local players.
While you can play pickleball independently, Pickleheads makes it a snap to connect and socialize with other central Kentuckians – potentially leaving you with new lifelong friends. “Pickleball is a social activity as much as it’s a sport,” says Brandon Mackie. “It’s commonly played in an open-play format where 50 or even more players show up and rotate games and partners. You also almost always play pickleball as doubles, which leaves many opportunities to socialize and meet players.”
Pickleball may be a bit of a pickle to master (pardon our pun), but even beginners tend to pick the game up quickly and keep coming back for more. “Pickleball’s popularity exploded during the pandemic, when many Americans were looking for responsible ways to socialize and stay active. But that was only the beginning – pickleball’s growth has continued even as lockdowns have ended and normal life has resumed,” explains co-founder Brandon.
Not quite sure where to start? Visit the Pickleheads website to learn more about the sport, locate courts and find other pickleball friends!

Peaches In Season:
Peach Cobbler
1/2 c. unsalted butter
1 c. all-purpose flour, sifted
2 c. sugar, divided
1 T baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
5 c. fresh peaches, peeled and sliced
1 T fresh lemon juice
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Melt butter in the bottom of a 13x9” ceramic baking dish.
In a large bowl with a pour spout (or measuring cup), combine flour, 1 c. sugar, baking powder and salt with a fork. Add milk and vanilla. Stir until dry ingredients are just moistened.
Pour batter over butter. Do not stir or flatten.
In a saucepan over high heat, bring peaches, lemon juice and 1 c. sugar to a boil, stirring constantly.
Pour peach mixture as evenly as possible over batter. Do not mix or flatten. Bake for 45 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbling. Let rest for 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. (adapted from Southern Living)
Note: if your peaches are very ripe, you may wish to toss with cornstarch to ensure that cobbler doesn’t come out overly-sweet and wet.
Peach Salsa
1 lb. Roma tomatoes, diced and chopped
1 bell pepper, seeded and diced
2 jalapeños, seeded and diced
1 medium red onion, diced
1 1/2 lbs. peaches, pitted and chopped
1/2 bunch cilantro, stemmed and chopped
2 T lime juice
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
Toss everything together in a large bowl. Cover and let sit for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld. Refrigerate for up to 3 days.
(adapted from Natasha’s Kitchen)
Notes: This salsa is perfect for eating with chips. It’s also a great topping for your grilled pork and fish dishes. If you’re into “gourmet” burgers, try this as a topping along with a handful of crispy fried onions. If you’d like a little more kick, leave in the jalapeño seeds and add 1/2 tsp. Tajín powder before tossing.
Peach Chutney
1 lb. peaches, peeled and pitted
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. apple cider vinegar
1/2 red onion, chopped
1/4 c. golden raisins
1 T grated fresh ginger
2 strips lemon zest
1 cinnamon stick pinch of salt
2 T water
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, bring sugar, vinegar, red onion, raisins, ginger, lemon zest, cinnamon, salt and 2 T of water to a simmer; cook 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the peaches and return to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until peaches are just tender and liquid is syrupy, about 30 minutes.
Let cool and transfer to jars and refrigerate until cool. Keeps up to 2 weeks.
(adapted from Food Network)
Notes: This tangy condiment is great with pork chops. It’s also a perfect spread to add to your charcuterie board!
July 2023 | TOPS 177 July 2023
1 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt
6 T. unsalted butter
1/4 c. ice water
3 small peaches, pitted and sliced
1 T sugar
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 egg white
Peach Galette Peach Icebox Cake
2 frozen pound cakes, thawed
1 (10 oz.) jar peach preserves, divided
1 qt. vanilla ice cream, slightly softened
1 c. heavy cream
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
3 T powdered sugar
1 c. peach slices, peeled (see notes)
In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Grate in cold butter. Gently toss with flour until all strands are coated. Sprinkle in ice water while gently tossing with a rubber spatula to create a dry, shaggy dough.
Turn dough out. Quickly gather into a loose disc, and wrap with Saran wrap. Refrigerate for at least an hour.
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Toss peach slices with sugar and cinnamon. Unwrap dough and transfer to a sheet of parchment paper. Roll to 1/4” thickness in a rough round. Move dough and parchment paper to a baking sheet.
Arrange peaches from the center, leaving 2” of dough uncovered. Fold the edges over the peaches. (For a less rustic look, neatly turn edges under.) Seal using egg white, and lightly brush the crust with egg wash. Sprinkle with a light dusting of sugar.
Bake until dough is golden, about 40 minutes. Let stand at least 20 minutes before cutting. If desired, garnish with mint leaves for a fresh look.
(adapted from Tasting Table)
Using a serrated knife, trim and discard crusts from pound cakes. Cut into 1/2” thick slices.
Line the bottom of a 9x5” loaf pan with plastic wrap, leaving 4”+ overhang. Place 1 T. of peach preserves in a microwavable container, and chill until use.
Arrange 6 cake slices, side by side, to cover bottom of pan; trim as needed to completely cover bottom. Spread 2 c. ice cream over cake. Spread half of remaining peach preserves evenly over the ice cream layer. Cover the next layer with 6 slices of pound cake, again trimming to completely cover layer. Spread 2 c. ice cream as the next layer, followed by a layer of the remaining 1/2 jar of peach preserves. For the last layer, use the remaining pound cake to completely cover the layer.
Tightly cover the top of the cake with plastic wrap. Freeze around 8 hours. Beat cream and vanilla with an electric mixer on high until foamy. Gradually sift in powdered sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
Remove cake from the freezer; lift cake from pan using plastic wrap overhang. Invert cake onto a platter and discard plastic wrap. Spread top and sides with whipped cream.
Melt reserved 1 T. of preserves in your microwave, around 10-15 seconds. Gently stir in peaches to coat. Place peach slices atop cake and serve immediately.
(adapted from Souterhn Living)
Notes: wait to slice peaches until ready to serve. Cut with a clean, warmed knife, cleaning between each cut with a warm, moist towel.

Peach Bellini
1 peach, peeled and diced
8 fresh raspberries
1/2 c. water
1 bottle Prosecco, chilled
Peach Margs
3 oz. tequila
2 oz. Cointreau
2 oz. fresh lime juice
1 c. sliced peaches
1 T simple syrup
1 c. ice
Peach Sangria
1 bottle Sauvignon Blanc
1/4 c. peach schnapps
1/4 c. peach nectar
1/4 c. sugar
sliced peaches
mixed berries
seltzer
In a blender, puree peach, raspberries and water. Press mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove raspberry seeds. Cover and chill for at least 1 hour before serving.
To serve, pour 2 ounces of puree into a champagne flute. Top with Prosecco, and stir gently.
(adapted from Pinch and Swirl)
Note: to reduce foam, open your Prosecco 15 minutes before serving. Feel free to garnish with a fresh slice of peach!
Blend ingredients until combined to your desired consistency; a little less time will result in a slushier margarita while longer will make the consistency thinner and more sippable.
If desired, run a slice of lime along the edge of your glass, then dip in salt. Garnish each glass with a slice of lime or peach.
(adapted from A Couple Cooks)
Note: For a fun twist, stir a few chopped basil leaves into the mixture before serving, then garnish each glass with a fresh basil leaf. This will offer a fresh, bright, summery taste your guests will adore!
In a large pitcher, combine wine, peach schnapps, peach nectar and sugar. Stir to combine. Let sit in the fridge at least 2 hours before serving.
Add sliced peaches and desired mixed berries to the pitcher just before serving.
To serve, fill a glass with ice, fill glass to 2/3 full with sangria, then top with seltzer.
(adapted from The Novice Chef)
Note: Flavored seltzer will obviously add a little more flavor to the mix. We won’t tell anyone if you want to use peach-flavored hard seltzer to add the bubbles to your glass! ;)

Mission: “To create a more compassionate environment for special needs children, which we believe starts in the home, followed by a culture of inclusion in society.”
PHOTOS BY CHRISTIAN BRANHAM
“My priority is making my home a haven for my husband and three beautiful children,” explains April Parker. “I enjoy homeschooling my 2 younger children and watching them become amazing siblings to my oldest child, Sayla, who has profound cerebral palsy.
April continues, “Sayla’s smile lights up our world, and because of her, as well as my background as an ER nurse and an interior decorator, I founded my organization Project Special Spaces, a nonprofit where we provide professionally interior decorated bedrooms to children with special needs living in Kentucky.”
The family moved to Kentucky 12 years ago to pursue better healthcare opportunities for Sayla, including a Medicaid waiver and access to better therapy. “It is my turn to give back with the goal of creating a more inclusive and compassionate environment for special needs children across our state,” April says.
