ERINEVATE TRAKTSIOONIMEETODITE KASUTAMINE ALASELJAVALUGA PATSIENTIDE RAVIS Usage of Different Traction Methods in Patients with Low Back Pain Marit Salus, Brit Marleen Õismaa Abstract Low back pain is a frequent problem causing absence from work and it is also a burden to the health care system. Despite its seriousness the majority of low back pain patients recover within few months after the first pain episode occurred. Traction has been used since ancient times as one of the treatment options for low back pain, but the efficacy is still questionable. The aim of this thesis was to provide an overview of various traction methods used as a treatment modality among patients who suffer from low back pain. Results of the thesis show, that despite the differences of various traction methods, the purpose for traction applications is similar. Regardless of the type, method, duration, force etc. of traction, the main purpose is to apply traction force in order to create distraction. Distraction creates decompression of the compressed neural structures and intravertebral discs. Mostly the traction methods are divided into three categories: manual, mechanical and auto-traction. Using traction methods for low back pain treatment is still controversial. The efficacy of traction could be affected by various aspects such as the specific technique, magnitude of force, duration and frequency. Traction can be used as one of the treatment interventions for low back pain, but the efficacy still remains disputable. Keywords: traction therapy for low back pain, low back pain conservative treatment, inversion traction therapy.
