Hand Hygiene of Nurses Working at South Estonian Hospital Teele Piir, Merle Varik, Alice Venski Abstract Hand hygiene is one of the simplest ways to prevent infection and spread in patients and colleagues. Over the years, various documents have been produced by the Health Board and hospital infection nurses on how to perform the most effective hand washing in various situations. The aim of the final thesis is to describe the hand hygiene observation protocols of nurses working in the departments of South-Estonian Hospital. With regard to the objectivity of the work, the questions are: (1) How are nurses maintaining hand hygiene before performing the procedure? (2) How are nurses maintaining hand hygiene after performing the procedure? The research is quantitative, empirical and descriptive. This study has been conducted between 27.07-01.09.2020 in the inpatient departments of SouthEstonian Hospital, involving 41 nurses. Data were collected by non-interventional observation, using protocols. The data obtained from the study were analyzed in Excel. The research revealed that the nurses´ hand hygiene before performing the procedure depended on the upcoming procedure. Regarding non-invasive procedures, the results showed that 61% of nurses did not perform hand hygiene before the procedure, while 73% of nurses performed hand hygiene before invasive procedures; 90% of the nurses performed hand hygiene in the case
