CANCELLATION, WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDS POLICY

GENERAL PROGRAMS

Full credits or refunds will be processed by contacting Reception a minimum of 7 DAYS for Pro-D Day, Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer Camps and 3 DAYS prior to the start of all other courses/ program start dates (less supply costs). No refunds or credits will be given for dates of classes which have passed unless a medical note is supplied, and proof of absence can be obtained. Full credits or refunds are issued when WSPR cancels a program or when a program is not convenient due to unforeseen course changes. Every effort will be made by WSPR staff to cancel a class/program in a timely manner (3 to 5 days prior to course start date).

PASSES AND MEMBERSHIPS

Visit Passes, 1 month and 3month memberships and promotional passes are non-transferable and non-refundable but may be upgraded to an annual membership. Annual adult and annual family memberships are eligible for a one-time extension for leaves exceeding 30 days. Leaves less than 30 days may be granted for medical or personal emergencies. Requests may be granted for cancellation of annual memberships for relocation or medical reasons. Cancellations are effective at the end of the current month.

Credits are valid for two years from the date of issue. For refunds, payments made by credit card or debit will be credited to original credit/debit card (some restrictions apply). All other refunds are refunded by cheque and processed within 10 working days. A $25 fee may apply to NSF cheques, credit card or electronic fund transfer rejections. Refunds may be granted at the discretion of WSPRS staff. Documentation may be required. Some exceptions may apply and will be listed on your program receipts.

HOW TO BOOK A FACILITY

To book a WSPR room, arena, fields, facilities and evening/weekend follow these steps.

1. Download a form

The ‘request for use form’ is available at JDF reception, or online at www.wspr.ca under the Facility link.

2. Complete the form

Please fill out the form with all of the details of your booking.

How To: Check Availability

• Navigate to explore.wspr.ca

• Create account or logon to existing account

• Select your facility booking category under Explore/Book Our Facilities

• Select the tile that shows the venue or space that you are interested in booking

• Input all search filter criteria for a specific search or select the CHECK AVAILABILITY button with no filters criteria to broaden your search.

• Use the drop-down menu to select the personal or organizational account you wish to create the booking under.

• Insurance is required for all bookings, WSPR requires a valid third party $5 million liability policy with Westshore Parks & Recreation Society added as an additional insured.

• Available dates/times/locations will appear in green shading with a check mark listing “Available”.

• Unavailable dates/times/locations will appear in an orange shading with an X listing “Unavailable”.

4. Completing a booking

Upon receipt of the completed request for use form,’ our bookings department will process the request, and contact you when a rental contract has been prepared. It is not a confirmed booking until a contract is signed and payment is made.

How To: Fill Out a Request for Use Form

• Download the “Request for Use form” and save it to your electronic device.

• Input all contact and booking request information with as much detail as possible including alternate dates if able.

• Once you have saved the completed form to your electronic device, press the “Submit form to” button to email the completed PDF request form directly to the designated booking clerk.

• Submitting a request form does not guarantee or hold your requested date/time/location. This form is a request only and will not be confirmed until all requirements have been met and reviewed by our bookings department. A completed booking request occurs when a valid proof of insurance is provided, a signed facility rental agreement and payment have been submitted to the bookings clerk.

JUAN DE FUCA GOLF COURSE

Improve Your Short Game, Improve Your Score.

Located in the lower park at West Shore Parks & Recreation. The JDF Par 3 golf course consists of nine beautifully manicured holes, with yardage ranging from 79 to 170 and seven water hazards, this course is ideal for both the beginner and the experienced player. This course will only take a short commitment of time and is conveniently located only 20 minutes from downtown. Play on a first come first served basis – tee times not required.

Stick and Puck

This session is a great time for skaters aged 6+ to practice their hockey skills.

• No experience necessary.

• Children must have full gear to use hard pucks.

• Staff will be on the ice to provide pointers.

• No glides available.

• Helmets required for all regardless of age.

• Pucks will be provided.

Duffer

This program is for adults (19+) to hit the ice for some fun, non-contact hockey. Full gear required.

POWERWEST ATHLETICS

We want you to be the best skater you can be! PowerWest Athletics (PWA) programs emphasize correct technical skating including stride development, agility, speed, balance, quickness, and readiness through the effective use of edges.

Our programs are unique in their program format, low ratio of instructors to participants, and are known for their professional skating instruction. Striding for excellence for 30+ years in coaching with novice to pro hockey players. Instructed by Mena Westhaver and her team of PowerWest Athletics coaches.

Edge Classes for all ages

6 years +

Edge classes cover all skating skills and edges: forwards and backwards, transitions, accelerations and decelerations with an emphasis on balance, control, power, and strength.

PRE-SEASON TRAINING CAMPS & PROGRAMS

Bust the rust and be ready to play with more efficiency, power, balance, and strength. Skating is the emphasis of these programs, hockey skills are included. Participants will receive a PWA jersey and a water bottle is included for U7/U9. Please note: I take 4 goalies per session and have specific Goalie registration codes for the U11 and upwards. Please register accordingly.

OUR FACILITY

The Juan de Fuca pool has a variety of features and amenities. Our pool is fully accessible for swimmers of all abilities. Equipment and amenities include:

• Male, female and universal changerooms

• Steam room, sauna and hot tub

• 8 lane 25 metre pool

• Leisure pool including lazy river and tot slide (only for sliders under 48”)

• Big blue waterslide (only for sliders over 48”)

• Aquatic wheelchairs

• Zero depth entry ramp into the leisure pool

• Handicare motorized lifts in universal changeroom, and on the pool deck (provides access to hot tub, main and leisure pool)

• Climbing wall

DROP-IN ACTIVITIES

Lane Swimming

For continuous lane swimmers. Swimming pace is identified through signage in each lane, and includes casual, slow, moderate, and fast. Water Walking is not permitted in continuous lane swimming lanes.

Water Walking

For water walking in the lane pool. Continuous lane swimming is not permitted in water walking lane.

Aquafit

Get fit in the pool! AquaFit classes are great for all fitness levels. Classes take place in the main pool, either in deep water or combo class (both deep and shallow).

Leisure Swim

Leisure time for adults and families with children. Access only to leisure pool and hot tub, no access to main pool. Age restrictions may apply.

Fun Swim

Fun for all ages! Main pool, leisure pool, hot tub, waterslide, rope swing and spray features are available.

Waterslide

You must be 48” tall to ride. Single riders only.

Youth Swim

Admission $2. All pool areas available for youth only swim for those ages 12-18. All pool areas including steam room, sauna and hot tub closed except for youth.

Adult Swim

For adults 18+ only. All pool areas are open

Child Admission Policy

All children under the age of 7 must stay within arm’s reach of an adult (16+) at all times. Maximum 3 children per adult. Children 7-9 years must have an adult in the facility during their visit.

PRIVATE LESSON

A weekly lesson set with one of our skilled instructors! Private lessons can include up to three participants with no additional charge. The primary booker is responsible for coordinating participants and paying in full upon registration. Maximum class size: 3 swimmers of similar ability (within a 3 level range)

There are two options to choose from:

1. Main Pool Private Class

• 45 Minutes

• Held in the main pool with a minimum depth of 1.1M.

• Best for swimmers 5 and over, including teens and adults.

2. Leisure Pool Private Class

• 30 Minutes

• Held in the warmer and shallow leisure pool.

• Best for all swimmers 5 and under or first-time swimmers of any age.

• 1:1 In-water participation is required for swimmers 2 and under and first-time swimmers of preschool age.

West Shore Masters Swim Club 18 Years +

Experienced swimmers of all levels are invited to join us and improve their strokes and fitness with a program designed and led by an NCCP certified coach. Swimmers must be able to swim a minimum of 1000m in one hour and 200 m continuously.

The fee schedule is 132/1, $240/2, $324/3, $432/4, $540/5 swims per week. Participants may choose any combination of available practice days and times, and will be a guaranteed spot on those days/time.

In addition to session costs, all new participants must pay a $39 annual registration fee to Swim BC (August-September).

Swimming Lessons

WSPR SWIM!

With Red Cross phasing out their Canadian swim program, we’ve custom designed WSPR Swim to meet the needs of our growing community. WSPR Swim focuses on physical literacy, fun and safety. It includes a revitalized version of our existing preschool program, and a newly developed program for swimmers 5+.

WSPR Swim’s school age program contains 3 modules designed to establish swimming safety, skills, strength, and speed in core strokes including front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke. Treading water, eggbeater, diving, and dolphin kick are also developed.

WSPR Swim can be adapted for swimmers with unique needs and abilities.

These parented levels for the youngest swimmers provide a fun and safe introduction to the pool environment through play and songs.

Aqua Babies

(Previously Diaper Dive)

4 – 13 Months

1:1 Parent participation required. Focus is on entering and exiting the pool safely, bubble blowing, front and back floats and submersions through creative games and songs.

Aqua Tots

(Previously Little Learners)

14 – 23 Months

1:1 Parent participation required. Focus is on floating on front and back more independently, jumping into water, bobs and rollover floats through creative games and songs.

Twos – Beginner

(Previously Twos in Training)

24 – 35 Months

1:1 Full parent participation is required. Designed to introduce children to structured swimming lessons. To complete, children must be confident blowing bubbles, submerging and doing assisted front floats and kicks.

Twos – Advanced

(Previously Terrific Twos & Twos at the Top)

24 – 35 Months

1:1 Parent participation required at first lesson and / or at discretion of instructor Designed for swimmers to start participating independently. To complete, children must eventually be comfortable without in-water parent support and must be comfortable trying assisted floats, glides, kicks and games using a variety of equipment with the instructor.

Lesson Cancellation Policy:

Prorated refunds or credits may be obtained if requested before the second class. Classes cannot be rescheduled. Makeup lessons are not provided.

Young swimmers learn basic swim and water safety skills through songs and play. On completion of Dolphin, swimmers are comfortable swimming independently on front and back.

Level 1 – Starfish

1:1 Parent participation required at first lesson and / or at discretion of instructor. For children being introduced to the pool environment, submersions and assisted front and back floats and glides.

Level 2 – Jellyfish

1:1 Parent participation required at first lesson and / or at discretion of instructor. For children comfortable with submersion and ready to be introduced to unassisted front and back floats and glides.

Level 3 – Snapper

Front and back swims are developed, and children are introduced to deeper water. Children will be skilled doing front swims with big arms and back swims. Recovery to the pool edge and comfort swimming in the big pool is required to advance to Dolphin.

Level 4 – Dolphin

(Previously Maroon Starfish & Blue Dolphin)

3 – 5 Years

Unparented

Front and back swims will continue to be refined and confidence will be developed in the big pool. Front and back crawl, side glides and changing direction in deep-water are taught.

Suit up for swimming:

Children who have not mastered toileting must wear a swim diaper in the pool. Swim diapers may be purchased at reception.

Swim Safe Swim Skills Swim Strong

Swimmers learn basic swim and water safety skills. On completion of Swim Safe 4, swimmers are safe in deep water for moderate distances.

Swim Safe 1

5 – 13 Years

For beginners being introduced to submersions, unassisted front and back floats and glides. Parent participation is optional for younger beginners.

Swim Safe 2

(Previously Swim Kids 2)

5 – 13 Years

Confidence performing front and back swims will determine advancement to Level 3. Children will be comfortable performing deep water activities.

Swim Safe 3

(Previously Swim Kids 3)

5 – 13 Years

Front crawl is the focus of this level. Diving, change of direction and treading water are also introduced.

Swim Safe 4

(Previously Swim Kids 4)

5 – 13 Years

Front crawl, back glides and shoulder rolls are developed. Students must complete a 25 metre endurance swim to move on to Level 5.

Swimmers develop stroke technique and more advanced water safety skills. On completion of Swim Skills 10, swimmers have achieved the skills needed to swim for lifelong safety, fitness and enjoyment.

Swim Skills 5

(Previously Swim Kids 5)

5 – 13 Years

Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling and whip kick on the back. Stride dives are taught and endurance is increased to 50 metres.

Swim Skills 6 & 7

(Previously Swim Kids 6 & 7)

5 – 13 Years

Work continues on front and back crawl. Elementary backstroke is introduced, endurance increases to 150 metres and basic rescue skills are taught.

Swim Skills 8/9/10

(Previously Swim Kids 8/9/10)

5 – 13 Years

For children able to swim distances of at least 150 metres (6 lengths) and those that have advanced front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke. Ready to learn breast stroke, side stroke, and egg-beater support, while continuing to refine front crawl, back crawl and focus on endurance.

Swimmers master technique to build endurance, improve strength and swim speed. Swim Strong is a great way to improve fitness and prepare for lifesaving & swim instructor courses.

Swim Strong 11

8– 15 Years

For swimmers who have completed Swim Skills 10 or equivalent, and seek to perfect technique such as whip kick and eggbeater, and continue refining front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke. Dolphin Kick and butterfly introduced.

Swim Strong 12

8– 15 Years

For swimmers who have completed Swim Skills 11 or equivalent, and seek to improve speed for timed swims, or work on endurance challenges. Drills and speed challenges introduced.

Bronze Medallion

Prerequisites: Minimum 13 years old by last class or Bronze Star. Recommended swimming ability equivalent to Swim Skills 8 or higher.

Develops an understanding of lifesaving principles. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defence and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a time swim.

Bronze Cross

Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion

For lifesavers who want more advanced training. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced Lifesaving Society programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certifications.

National Lifeguard Pool Option

Prerequisites: 15 years of age by last day of program, Bronze Cross, and Standard First Aid.

Develops fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required to be a lifeguard. Worth 2 credits for Grade 12. 100% attendance is mandatory.

National Lifeguard Pool Option Recert

Prerequisites: National Lifeguard Pool option

Lifeguards need to recertifiy every two years to remain current.

WSPR Swim Instructor Program

Pre-Requisite: 15 years old by the last day of the course AND Bronze Cross.

Interviews for Spring 2023 hiring are guaranteed upon completion of this course. For those interested in becoming a Swim Instructor with West Shore Parks & Recreation. This course plus a supervised/ guided apprenticeship covers everything an instructor needs to know to teach with us.

The path to working at Juan de Fuca has two streams – swim instructor and lifeguard. We may hire swim instructors with a Swim Instructor certification, Standard First Aid, and Bronze Cross. To lifeguard, you must also complete the National Lifeguard program in addition to being a Swim Instructor. Those without a Swim Instructor Certification may apply, however applicants must be registered in a Swim Instructor program as a condition of employment. Indoor Cycling

Indoor Cycling classes are a great cardiovascular, no impact workout set at your own intensity. Your instructor will simulate a variety of sprinting and hill climbing drills enabling you to build your cardiovascular fitness and endurance. Classes are for all levels, beginners to advanced.

A low impact, all-around fun full body class to increase your core strength, balance and flexibility. Full body strength and endurance exercises will get your heart pumping, muscles working and body feeling great in this efficient and fun class! A continuous series of full body strength, core exercises and cardio intervals. Suitable for all levels of fitness.

Power Core

Building a strong foundational core is key for balance and strength. This class will incorporate a mix of body weight, Pilates, stability ball, and bands to push you to the next level of body awareness and power. All levels welcome.

Stretch & Restore

A well needed stretch to finish off the week! This class will focus on targeted stretching and myofascial release to restore hard working muscles. Feel welcome to participate in the Cycle 60 class before and stay for the stretch or come for the stretch by itself.

Total Body Conditioning

Achieve a full body workout though this strength & conditioning freestyle format class. Focusing on form and technique this class will utilize body weight, body bars, dumbbells, and more to increase overall strength, tone and function.

TIME

Together in Movement and Exercise is an exercise class for individuals with balance and mobility challenges from conditions such as Stroke, Acquired Brain Injury or Multiple Sclerosis. This specialized circuit style fitness class is offered in partnership with Island Health. Participants must be able to independently walk 10 metres with or without a walking aid without the assistance of someone else.

YOUTH FITNESS Regional Youth Weight Room Orientation

This orientation will provide 13–15-year old’s with an introduction on how to safely use a recreation centre weight room. Content will include weight room procedures, etiquette; cardio and weight training guidelines and instruction on how to use and strength training equipment. Can be scheduled one-onone or see group session offerings on pg ().

Upon completion of this orientation, participants will receive a sticker which permits them to access weight rooms at the following facilities: Esquimalt Recreation Centre, City of Victoria Recreation Centre, Saanich Recreation Centres, and West Shore Recreation, Oak Bay Recreation Centre, Panorama Recreation Centre and SEAPARC.

Aqua Yoga

Aqua Yoga is a low-impact aquatic exercise, performing yoga poses in water. Aqua Yoga poses help you develop strength, static balance and increases range of motion with little to no impact on joints, especially knees, hips, and ankles. No yoga experience is necessary.

NEW! Core Yoga

This class will activate deep and superficial muscles of the abdomen through a focus on core exercises. It will also have elements of a traditional flow practice but will articulate more strength, stability and pelvic support in all flow postures.

NEW! Chair Yoga: Mobility and Mindfulness

This hour-long chair yoga class is created to be accessible to all. We will work on increasing our mobility while focusing on using our breath to calm our mind. Individuals should expect to leave this class feeling relaxed, both in their body and mind, and with some easy stretching poses and breathing exercises that can be done anytime, anywhere! Easy yoga is a weekly timeout that will energize your body and calm your mind. Nothing fancy, no difficult exercises, just plain easy yoga that anyone can do and benefit from.

Gentle Yoga

This is a nurturing class to release tension and stress. Restorative yoga poses use the breath to create a free flow of energy in the body. Gain body awareness and a sense of deep relaxation, allowing the body to heal.

RUNNING & WALKING JDF Trail Walkers

The JDF Trail Walkers is a volunteer led walking group with three different paced groups, walkers can find one to suit their own “speed” of walking from slow to moderate to fast. Walks take place on Tuesdays & Thursdays between 9-10:30am on the Galloping Goose trail, Royal Roads trails and surrounding area. Meeting times along with walking duration and distance varies depending on pace groups. New members are welcome to walk with any of the three groups to find one that best suits their walking pace.

Indoor (Concourse) Walking

Come walk The Q Centre Arena Concourse! Concourse walking is suitable for individuals who would benefit from the positive effects of low impact exercise. JDF Running Club

Hatha Flow Yoga

Traditional Hatha postures are sequenced to encourage fluid movement between postures. This fluid movement, partnered with breath awareness, helps create a strong connection between mind, body and spirit. This class is suitable for all-levels and blends stretching, strengthening, balancing, and relaxation.

Pilates Fusion

Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with the emphasis on the “power house” core strength. Fusion incorporates exercises from different workout styles, including Yoga, strength training, and Barre. In this class the emphasis is core, posture, toning, balance, flexibility, stretching and connecting mind and body.

Want to feel calm and strong in your yoga practice? We'll explore different and creative ways to move your body in a welcoming and relaxed environment. Beginners and beyond welcome to attend!

NEW! Vinyasa Flow Yoga

In this class we will activate foundational muscles using only your body weight then relax into more restorative postures. This class is just right for all levels of experience and accommodations are available if needed.

Yogilates

This class is a fusion blend of yoga and Pilates that will challenge strength, balance, stamina and flexibility. It combines the yogic focus of mind and body awareness with Pilates techniques to improve posture and deep core strength to create a strong, stable foundation for movement. Finish with Savasana to relax the mind and body. All fitness levels are welcome, and the class is beginner friendly!

Hawaiian Hula Dance for Seniors is a fun dance and movement class that helps you exercise your mind, body, and soul. Tailored for seniors, come learn basic Hawaiian hand, feet, and body dance movements, teaching you fluidity of movement and grace. Sway and move to the music of Hawaii and Polynesia in this low-impact class that will keep you active, while improving your coordination, balance, and memory.

EXERCISE REHABILITATION:

Do you need specialized exercises to assist your recovery or have a medical condition that your exercises need to address or be tailored around? Our team of Kinesiologists can help develop an exercise plan specifically for you, and demonstrate you how to perform your exercises safely and effectively. Written medical clearance may be required before participation. Exercise Rehabilitation requires an assessment by one of our qualified Kinesiologists, then a follow up appointment to show you your exercise program.

EXERCISE REHAB CLASSES

TIME

Together in Movement and Exercise is an exercise class for individuals with balance and mobility challenges from conditions such as Stroke, Acquired Brain Injury or Multiple Sclerosis. This specialized circuit style fitness class is offered in partnership with Island Health. Participants must be able to independently walk 10 metres with or without a walking aid without the assistance of someone else.

Aqua Therapy

This water therapy class is for people graduating from one-on-one rehabilitation sessions or those who require the support and guidance of the Exercise Rehabilitation Specialist. One-hour pool exercise sessions will include individual attention and program adaptation to give the best chance for improvements in strength, fitness, and function. This class is best suited for individuals with joint replacements and chronic pain. Pre-requisite: Rehabilitation Assessment, session, and Medical Clearance.

Take Heart & Breathe Well Program

This program is a supervised exercise program for people who have had a cardiac event/surgery, chronic respiratory illness, and/or other chronic conditions. DROP-IN SPORTS

Pickleball

Pickleball is an emerging racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, and is played in a fun and inclusive environment. All skill levels are welcome, and all equipment is provided. Please wear comfortable, athletic clothing and running shoes. Registration is mandatory. Basketball

Come shoot hoops on the Indoor Sports Floor! All ages and abilities welcome. Unsupervised open gym time - basketballs available for signout at reception. Participants under 12 years must be accompanied by someone at least 16 years of age.

Ball Hockey

This program is for adults (19+) to hit the indoor sports floor for some fun, non-contact hockey. Plastic blades only – sticks provided.

Jiu-Jitsu (Beginner)

14+ Years

This drop-in jiu-jitsu class is intended for beginners, but all abilities are welcome. We emphasize safety, having fun and getting a good workout! The classes will introduce participants to the fundamentals of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. There will be some time in each class for rolling (sparring). Students are encouraged to roll only if they feel comfortable doing so.

CYCLING Kids Can Ride 7-9 Years

Lifelong habits start at a young age. The sooner kids are taught safe bike-handling skills, the quicker they develop confidence and ability on their bikes. The focus of this course is to help your children develop and practice safe cycling skills and habits, so they’ll be ready to learn how to ride with traffic when they’re older. The skills are taught through fun games and skill-related activities by Capital Bike instructors! Please note that kids entering our courses should be able to ride a bike without training wheels.

Do you want to become more confident on your bike? This adult bike safety course combines classroom, parking lot, and on-road training taught by Capital Bike instructors. It’s intended to build traffic cycling proficiency for adults of any age who want to ride to work, run errands or ride for pleasure. Learn the rules of the road and traffic safety as it applies to cyclists. Practice important bike-handling skills in a nontraffic environment. In WSPR’s Move. Learn. Play.-based Licensed preschools, children have fun, build relationships and explore the world in which they live. Certified Early Childhood Educators who are also trained in fundamental movement and physical literacy skills incorporate basic components of physical literacy into the preschool programs. The aim is to give children the motivation, confidence and skills to be active for life.

All traditional activities including arts & crafts, storytelling, music, cooking, indoor and outdoor play are incorporated each day, utilizing the amazing 109 acre JDF site, use of the library and Indoor Sports Complex, and special activities such as dance, art, sports, yoga and skating.

Tiny dancers will tap their toes, twirl and whirl, learning the very basics of ballet with help from a parent or caregiver. Focus is on having fun, moving to music and participation in a group setting. Parent participation required.

We will learn both the graceful, technical basics of ballet and the high energy, more fast-paced style of jazz dance. Students will work towards a simple jazz routine rounded out with beginner ballet technique and posture. Parents/Guardians do not join their child in the program room.

For dancers who want to try it all! Each week we will spend time on both the graceful, technical basics of ballet and the high energy, more fast-paced style of jazz and hip hop. Utilizing the beautiful and varied 109 acres at WSPR, this is an all outdoors, all -weather nature program. This camp is designed to give children a positive first interaction with 10 sports. Our NCCP Instructors will teach through games and activities designed to explore agility, timing, balance, movement, hand/eye coordination, and skill development tailored to individual skill levels.

This party is for up to 10 children (including the birthday child), and includes 1 hour of art instruction, all art materials, and a 30-minute party room rental.

• The party room time does not have an attendant.

• We DO NOT Supply: tablecloths, balloons, décor, food, tableware, candles, cake knives, etc.

• Parties can bring their own treats, music and decorations for their event rooms. Rental spaces do not include a fridge, kitchen, or the ability to warm items.

• Please be advised we are a nut aware facility and ask that No Nuts are brought into the spaces.

• Arriving/Leaving: There is a 10 minute window for set-up and take-down before and after your party.

Horseback riding lessons are a great way to develop confidence, balance and coordination. Learn to ride on safe, well-trained school horses from qualified instructors. Through play, improv games, and text analysis, you will become confident in how to approach a script and create a real audition. At the end of the week, you will receive a link to download your own self taped audition.

This full day music camp offers a creative and fun approach to learning about music. Introduction to Coding

9-12 Years

Discover how much fun it is to build your own game! Students will be introduced to basic coding skills with easy to use drag-and-drop software, and get to use those skills to make their very own games. Students will also learn how to create their own 2D vector artwork to make characters and levels that are entirely their own. The final project is a game that you can access and play or proudly share with friends online.

3D Animation

11-14 Years

Dreaming of a career with PIXAR? Ever wonder how those awesome 3D animated movies like Shrek, Toy Story and Frozen are made? Spend the week learning how by modeling, animating and telling your own stories in 3D. You'll use Blender, a wonderful (& free!) 3D software, to design characters that jump off the screen and then make them come alive by adding voices, soundtracks and completing your own animated short film. Final projects are usually group projects with each student contributing a character and a scene.

Claymation Movie Production

9-12 Years

Make your own clay characters come to life, just like Shaun the Sheep! Participants will work to build their own clay characters, sets and props; develop their own script; shoot their movie scenes; and then learn to edit and add sounds and special effects to complete the whole project. Don't worry parents, there will be plenty of time devoted to outdoor games and activities!

Learn how to build a 2D game from the ground up using Godot, an awesome free software that uses a coding language similar to python. This is a coding camp, so be prepared to challenge yourself and learn some new skills. Time will be spent learning how to create advanced 2D vector artwork and animated character sprites to make your game look great. Some coding experience or Byte Camp's - Intro to Coding is a recommended as a prerequisite.

The final project is a game that you can access and play or proudly share with friends online. 2D Animation on Tablet

9-12 Years

Turn your drawing skills into awesome animation skills on our tablets! We'll show you how to make beautiful animations as wild as your imagination. Participants will learn to storyboard and use some advanced animation skills to make their characters really come alive on the screen. Principles like Squash & Stretch, Anticipation and Exaggeration will be introduced in fun lessons and students will produce their own animated short films by the end of the week.

Build an App

11-14 Years

Learn how to design, code, test and deploy your very own app! Use the gyroscope, tapping, and dragging or anything else you can think of to build your app from scratch. This is a coding camp, so be prepared to challenge yourself and learn some new skills. Each day a new project is introduced and students are taken through the steps of understanding and working with the new code ideas. Students will get to work on their own project ideas on the final two days. No previous experience is required however Byte Camp's 2D Video Game Design is recommended.

Music Video Production

9-12 Years

Make your own music and music video! Camp time will be split between digital music composition, video filming and editing. Use amazing software tools to craft your very own song from scratch. We will show you the basics on beats, baselines, chords and melodies so that your song will sound awesome. Experiment with video, special effects and editing techniques to make the video as cool as your tune.

Fill your week with action, adventure and a lot of comedy with Film Camp in A Box Senior Claymation and Lego animation camp. Mentored by master filmmakers, campers will engage in hands-on exploration of the stop motion animation process, including pre production, production and post production. Working in small crews, they will learn about stop motion animation, set design, script writing and editing. Campers will then create their own stop motion animation and edit a short film and movie trailer, complete with sound effects, music, voice, sound effects and special effects. Movies will be presented at our red carpet, popcorn film festival and archived on our digital theater.

Rock and Roll all night and every day at our Music Video Production in a Box workshop. Mentored by master filmmakers, campers will engage in hands-on exploration of the music video production process, including pre production, production and post production. Working collaboratively in small crews, they will learn about cinematography specific to music videos and advanced editing techniques. Using an existing pop culture song, campers will listen to the lyrics, learn them and create a story, encapsulating the theme of the lyrics. They will then act in and edit their full music video. Each film crew will use a Macbook, Final Cut Pro, an HD camera, tripod, and green screen under the guidance of their own filmmaker. Family and friends will join us at the Film Camp in a Box Red Carpet Film Festival at the end of the week to enjoy blockbusters and, of course, some popcorn. Always wanted to learn to skateboard? Join us at the NEW Thrifty Foods Skatepark at West Shore Parks & Recreation. This half day camp is for first time/beginner skateboarders. Lead by certified skateboarding instructors. Learn the basics, warming up/ stretching, foot placement, balance, push, turn, stop and how to fall. Campers will participate in skateboard games that enhance skill development, learn about equipment and maintenance, skatepark safety, etiquette, and adaptations.

All participants will then gain hands-on experience by working with West Shore staff during summer camps. (One-week full-time volunteer hours is required with one of West Shore camps.) Program graduates will receive a certificate of completion and an evaluation from camp leaders, great tools to enhance future employment opportunities. A summer recreation pass is included.

Wedding Dance Preparation

Don’t leave the traditional first dance, as a newly married couple, to chance. We can help you prepare for this special event. We’ll cover how to approach the floor with poise, basic step patterns, how to move as one and how to finish with flair. As this is an activity that requires two people dancing together, please be sure to register with a partner.

Intermediate East Coast Swing

You have learned the basics and are ready for more! Join us as we introduce a selection of new figures and variations to increase your repertoire for added interest and fun. Please be sure to register with a partner.

NIA Dance

Dance has been proven to help cognitive function, as well as, condition the bodies heart, lungs, bones and muscles while just having fun moving to music. Nia is choregraphed and Free dance combined with Martial Arts and Healing. Nia improves circulation and helps maintain a healthy weight. Nia is great for any age, fitness level, or body type. Please bring a yoga mat.

Jazz for Beginners

Join us in a fun and supportive environment to learn the basics of Jazz. Develop technique with the help of our experienced instructor. Those new to Jazz and beginners who are seeking to improve their technique are welcome to join this class.

NEW! Aloha Fit Hawaiian Dance & Movement for Seniors

Hawaiian Hula Dance for Seniors is a fun dance and movement class that helps you exercise your mind, body, and soul. Tailored for seniors, come learn basic Hawaiian hand, feet, and body dance movements, teaching you fluidity of movement and grace. Sway and move to the music of Hawaii and Polynesia in this low-impact class that will keep you active, while improving your coordination, balance, and memory.

This class is for total beginners who have never been in contact with French. In this class, students will focus on basic communication around the topics of first interactions in French and discovering a francophone city. (Textbooks are mandatory)

2023 L.I.F.E Program

L.I.F.E. assists individuals and families with low incomes to access recreation services and programs at all municipal recreation centres in Greater Victoria. The L.I.F.E. Program is designed for individuals and families in the Westshore whose combined gross household income must be at or below Statistic Canada’s estimated low income thresholds for 2021. Post-secondary students are not eligible.

A competitive non-impact sport?

Check out the Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowls Club. Lawn Bowling is a competitive sport open to all ages and levels (social, recreational, competitive and elite). The only equipment required is a pair of flat soled shoes (no heels.) Lawn Bowling is similar to curling except the jack is a moveable object. Men and women compete equally so it is enjoyable for couples. Social and recreational open bowls are played with optional attendance. Schedule or league bowling is available for the competitive. Our clubhouse hosts socials, BBQ’s and Pot Lucks.
