The imperative for mental health training

1 IN 4 EMPLOYEES ARE AFFECTED BY A MENTAL DISORDER EVERY YEAR

AND THE REMAINING 3 CARRY THE LOAD

Mental ill health, trauma, and burnout are growing issues in society and the workplace.

Not only are organisations feeling the impact of poor mental health and wellbeing, the dynamics in modern organisations are contributing to, and aggravating the problem.

100% of the annual salary

The average cost of a single resignation due to stress and inability to cope

$9,660 per employee per year in absenteeism

Average cost of absenteeism for untreated depression

$57,960 per employee per year in presenteeism

Average cost of presenteeism is SIX times that for absenteeism

Arguably the key objective for managers and HR professionals is to bring out the best in people - to create a high performance culture of collaborators and innovators.

But when an employee is suffering from mental ill health::

✤ Their productivity declines

✤ Their team mates are affected

✤ Their customers are less well served

If not addressed, the situation can become chronic and lead to excessive sick leave, resignation and in extreme cases, self harm and suicide.

The impact is not just on the the individual - the team and the organisation are impacted. Organisations without Proper Mental Health Training and Programs:

✓ ELEVATE Stress and Anxiety

✓ CREATE Tension and Conflict

✓ DECREASE Decision Making

✓ SUPPRESS Communication

✓ CRUSH Creativity

✓ DRAIN Productivity

✓ FUEL Complaints

✓ EXPERIENCE Absenteeism

✓ LOSE Key Staff

✓ INCREASE Legal Liability

✓ SUFFER Bad Press & PR

✓ BLEED Cash

BUT THERE IS GOOD NEWS!

And yet as humans, often we struggle, and resist the inevitable changes, causing great distress and even conflict for ourselves and within our teams.

One of the biggest stressors at work is not the workload or task demands, but the interpersonal dynamics between team members. Workplaces are artificial environments, where a diverse group of people are thrust together, and expected to communicate and operate together seamlessly to achieve a certain goal. It’s not surprising then that many times, team dynamics are less than ideal, causing stress and distress, poor morale, covert or overt conflict, and a downward spiral of wasted time, energy, and headaches for all involved.

This course provides a safe forum for teams to learn about team dynamics, diverse personality and communication styles, and develop strategies for better cohesion and cooperation, to enhance productivity, performance, and wellbeing for all.

This course was designed specifically for staff in helping or customer service professions to provide a framework for positive peer to peer debriefing, to ensure that informal debriefing is done appropriately and helpfully, stays within the boundaries of informal debriefing, respects privacy, and improves wellbeing for all concerned.

Workplace Wellbeing Strategy

Discover the Precise State of Your Organisation’s Mental Health & Wellbeing

With global statistics showing that 1 in 4 people experience a mental disorder each year, there will be people in your organisation who are in distress. Even with the best recruitment practices, life throws us curve balls, and people go through challenges.

And like it or not, they bring them to work.

When people are mentally unwell, they are not able to perform to their potential, they are more likely to make mistakes, have accidents and injuries, be absent or unproductive, and this impacts not just them, but the whole team.

And the majority of people will not tell their boss when they are experiencing a mental health problem. So for most organisations, without an overt crisis situation to draw their attention to it, they are unaware of the degree to which these silent mental health problems are impacting their teams …. and their bottom line.

You need to know where you are, to work out where you want to be.

Building and sustaining a corporate culture that promotes mental health and growth requires a scientific approach.

The first thing to do is to find out the facts of the situation. Basically, you want to know if the culture in your organisation or team is what you think it is, worse than you think it is or, hopefully, way better that you thought it was.

Once you know where you are, then you’ll be able to accurately determine the Mental Health Strategy that will get you the best ROI and produce the staff engagement, and profit, you are after.

About the Institute

The right blend of mental health expertise and management know how

Founded in Australia in 2010, and now a global organisation, The Workplace Mental Health Institute has been researching mental health, wellbeing and resilience and providing effective education and consulting services for organisations across the USA, UK, Europe, Asia and Australia for more than 12 years.

The Workplace Mental Health Institute provides a boutique educational resource for organisations serious about creating immediate and sustainable changes for their workforce.

We have a team of highly skilled Workplace Mental Health Specialists, based in key locations internationally, and available to travel to your location, as required.

What are our courses like?

Our training is practical, uplifting, and interactive. Participants are engaged through activities and exercises, group discussions, videos, games and case scenarios.

In short, our courses are fun! Mental health can be a sensitive topic for some, so we approach it in a respectful, yet light and non-confrontational way.

Of course, we take mental health seriously, but we also know that people learn best while having fun, so we make sure that participants are supported throughout, actually enjoy the experience, and take away as much as possible from the course.

Most importantly, we ensure participants not only develop awareness and knowledge of mental health issues, but also learn practical skills that they can apply, in their day to day working (and personal) lives, for better wellbeing and performance at work.

What Makes Us Different

Trusted by Government, Corporate and Community organisations

Recovery Approach

The WMHI adopts a recovery oriented approach to mental health, which means that our focus is on recovery not illness. This may see like a subtle distinction, but it’s a vital one. It means we don’t teach people how to look for problems that aren’t there, or how to make themselves unwell. We teach them how to confidently and skillfully manage mental health in the workplace, while staying well themselves. It also means that our courses incorporate diverse perspectives on mental health and wellness - perfect for diverse workforces.

Workplace Focus and Understanding

We take a unique approach to managing mental health at work, and understand the complexities involved in supporting people where mental health issues are concerned, while also ensuring that the business performs at optimal standard. We believe that these are not mutually exclusive.

Our Qualified Workplace Mental Health Specialists

All our specialists are qualified clinicians (psychologists, accredited mental health social workers, counsellors, coaches etc) with extensive experience in mental health, and are equally qualified and experienced in business management and leadership, so they understand the unique challenges facing organisations, and the solutions when it comes to mental health and wellbeing.

We’ll come to you - anywhere and everywhere you and your people are.

With experienced Workplace Mental Health Specialists located in major capital cities, we offer services across the USA, UK, Europe, Asia Pacific, and beyond, offering the capacity to deliver a large number of programs that are consistent in both content and quality.

Practical Skills

While knowledge of a subject can lead to understanding, it’s skills that leads to real outcomes. Our training is highly-practical and interactive. Your team members will be equipped with proven strategies they can use every day to achieve higher levels of productivity, increased creativity, and a greater capacity to solve problems, more effective teamwork, and a healthy, happy morale throughout the organisation.
