CITYLIF The City of Discovery When you become a student at Abertay, you’re not just picking a place to study, you’re picking your new home. We’re proud to say Dundee is an awesome place to live . . . and study. Scotland’s sunshine city If you’re looking to catch some rays and get a regular dose of vitamin D, then Dundee is the place for you. Facing due south,‘Sundee’ has more hours of sunshine than any other Scottish city. TRY: to remember to bring your sunglasses. Thank you for the music!

SCAN ME

From The View to Be Charlotte,The Associates to Danny Wilson, music is embedded in Dundee’s soul. You never know which stars of the future you might be seeing, and big names regularly play here. TRY: an outdoor gig at Slessor Gardens.

FOR MUSIC 14

FE Shop local The city is full of independent shops selling local products, clothes and art. Couple that with the usual high street chains like Waterstones and Primark, there’s plenty of retail therapy when you need it. TRY: to find THE perfect vintage outfit in our amazing pre-owned shops. Take me to the beach Nearby Broughty Ferry, AKA ‘the Ferry’, has an idyllic beach. There’s wild swimming, stand up paddle boarding, kite surfing and plenty of golden sand to relax on. TRY: hiring an electric bike and cruising to the beach from Campus. Go wild… Tentsmuir, featured in the BBC’s ‘Springwatch’, is 20 mins away - a forest full of hiking/biking trails and miles of golden sand. You can go dolphin and seal spotting on the River Tay, or kayaking on one of the nearby lochs. TRY: doing the ‘Dook’, a sponsored dip in the River Tay on New Year’s Day. abertay.ac.uk 15

…or go out! Local nightclubs regularly host big name DJs, and there are live music venues all over the city. You’ve got two cinema chains and an art house cinema to choose from. And obviously lots of great bars and pubs to visit. There’s even a secret speakeasy hidden away in the city centre… TRY: a cocktail in Draffens (but don’t tell anyone, it’s a secret). Sport and exercise? You bet! Olympia Leisure Centre – where you’ll get a student discount – has an extensive gym with classes, There are pools all over the city for serious swimmers. There are two local football teams with plenty of matches to watch during the season. The cycle paths extend for miles, and there’s a skate park about 10 minutes’ walk from Campus. Our ice hockey team, The Dundee Stars, are one of the best in Britain. TRY: the steep walk up Dundee Law: fabulous views over the city and out to the River Tay.

16

Food glorious food We have artisan butchers, locally made Italian ice cream, fine dining, cafes and coffee shops galore, and even a deli called The Cheesery. Plus, Dundee is famous for its bakeries. Visit Clarks literally whenever you like (it’s open 24 hours a day) or scoff a fudge doughnut from Fisher and Donaldson in the city centre. TRY: a local pie - called a ‘peh’ - or a pasty called a ‘bridie’. City of culture The V&A Dundee is just five minutes’ walk from Campus, with new exhibitions twice a year. There’s the Rep Theatre where Brian Cox (‘Succession’, anyone?) got his start, art and films at Dundee Contemporary Arts (the DCA), and even more art and history at the McManus Gallery or Verdant Works. The Eden Project is building its first-ever ecological attraction in Scotland, and a new e-sports arena will soon be housed next to the waterfront. TRY: a photography course at the DCA, using your student discount obviously!

TEACHING & LEARNING Tutorials, seminars and workshops are active discussions, with a small group of students led by a member of staff. To ensure you get the most out of them you need to prepare properly, so you can fully participate.

MySuccess modules

An Abertay education provides you with opportunities for personal development: intellectually, professionally, and individually. There’s a strong emphasis on active learning, collaboration and developing your work readiness. We take a blended approach to teaching, with practical sessions alongside workshops and tutorials all supported by online learning. This means you’ll put knowledge into practice as much as possible and develop essential skills for your future career. Here at Abertay, you can expect a truly engaging learning journey.

Lectures, tutorials and seminars Lectures are designed to enhance your knowledge and expertise. These are often delivered and recorded online so you can refer back to key concepts when you need to and learn at your own pace. 20

Starting university can be daunting. We support you with our MySuccess modules, focussing on areas you’d like to develop. You take the ‘Being Successful’ module in year one, covering topics such as academic writing and wellbeing. This all helps to prepare you academically and socially for university life.

Assessment and feedback You’ll take assessments throughout your studies. These are often based on realworld problems, where you apply your learning from each module. The format varies and can include quizzes, case studies, presentations, debates and essays. You’ll receive feedback throughout your modules to help prepare you for graded assessments.

Microcredentials We pride ourselves in giving you the flexibility to personalise your course. In year one you will undertake MySuccess modules to support you in developing academic and social skills for success. In year two you will take microcredentials where you get to explore topics that appeal to you.

Work-related learning Work-related learning is a key feature at Abertay. This can mean work placements, study trips or even optional exchanges with universities around the world. Much of this is built into the course syllabus. You can also broaden your experience and boost your CV through extracurricular opportunities, such as through student societies and our Principal’s Award. All of which helps you to hit the ground running after graduation.

Laboratory work Laboratories are where you apply your knowledge and develop practical skills. Lab work is essential for many courses. You’ll normally carry out supervised experiments and get to grips with the most up-to-date equipment in your chosen field, both individually and in groups. Most courses have a research project built into the final year, so that you can undertake original research and demonstrate your knowledge and laboratory skills.

Self-directed learning It’s vital to add to your knowledge from lectures and tutorials by studying in your own time.Teaching staff provide guidance such as reading lists and activities in MyLearningSpace (our virtual learning environment) and it’s up to you to make sure you keep up to speed.

Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) When you graduate, you’ll receive your electronic Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), a comprehensive record of your academic grades, plus your wider achievements such as academic prizes, sports awards and extracurricular work. Your HEAR supports applications for jobs and further study.

That makes it much easier to ask for help when you need it. In terms of Dundee, it’s a fantastic city to be a student and has a great nightlife. With everything that is happening with the waterfront project I know Dundee will thrive for many years to come and I’ll be back to visit as much as I can.

Abertay was a great university to study at and I think it benefits from having small class sizes as you really get to know your lecturers. I felt like they cared about how you were getting on.

Marketing and Business Management degrees at Abertay are flexible. You tailor what you study to suit your own interests and career aspirations. Our Marketing and Business Management degrees are part of a larger portfolio of 12 courses covering Business, Accounting and Marketing. The first two years covers a common curriculum including the basics of business, accounting, and marketing, meaning there’s the flexibility to swap between all of or some of the courses depending when you join. This means you can shape what you want to learn. You’ll develop general accounting, marketing and business skills that you’ll use throughout your career. Transferring between the courses is straightforward, so only apply for one of them.

Abertay has a real family feel to it. I liked that the lecturers knew every student by name and that they genuinely cared about students reaching their potential. The degree is delivered by a combination of academics and healthcare professionals, and because of this you get the best of both worlds.

Study Biomedical Science at Abertay and you’ll learn the techniques you need to conduct vitally important scientific tests, which underpin the diagnosis and treatment of human disease. This scientific analysis contributes greatly to the clinical outcomes of patients. If you follow the standard route, you’ll be well equipped for a career in life sciences - for instance, working in a laboratory setting looking at new drugs. Best of all, you’ll learn in cutting edge facilities at the UK’s Top University for Teaching Quality 2021.

Please note: After following a common pathway for two years, you’ll take either the Standard or the Applied programme route. The Applied route includes an 18-week placement and is particularly relevant for those keen to become a Biomedical Scientist in the NHS.

Physical Activity and Health

Alison Chapman

Special Education Teacher at Al Karamah School, Abu Dhabi

162

I work at a school for pupils with autism. It’s an American school but it’s for local children in Abu Dhabi. The children have varying levels of autism. I work in the PE department, doing gym with them and I love it. It’s an amazing job, and it’s quite a new school so it’s very up-to-date the facilities are incredible.

My degree has been massively helpful. I wouldn’t have got the job without it.

Physical Activity and Health draws on the core disciplines of physiology, psychology and sociology, so you learn about the effects of physical activity and inactivity on individual health, the needs of general and special (e.g. pregnancy, obesity and type 2 diabetes) populations. You also find out how to incorporate and increase physical activity and health at the individual, community and population level.

For the first two years, you would take Sport and Exercise as a foundation. After that, you can specialise or carry on studying this pathway. The degrees in this portfolio include:

It also includes areas such as public health policy and health promotion that teach you how to design, develop, implement and assess physical activity interventions – a crucial part of improving the health and wellbeing of the general population.

• BSc (Hons) Physical Activity and Health • BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise • BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science • BSc (Hons) Sports Development and Coaching • BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning If you’re joining us from college, you can often join in Year 3, meaning you can choose your specialism from the get-go.

My Abertay degree was important as it increased my skillset and gave me the confidence to pursue a career that I would never have thought possible. I was offered my first job just weeks after graduating. Abertay helped me grow as a person and believe in myself. I could never have imagined that I would be where I am now or be the person I am today. Abertay truly is an amazing university.

Abertay was absolutely crucial in getting me to where I am now. My course first exposed me to this industry and set a strong foundation of skills that were career-applicable when I received my first opportunity. Sport and Exercise Science

Dan Jefferson

Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach at the Boxing Federation of India

186

When I was 16, I went to do an apprenticeship in plumbing. I’d always had a background in sport specifically boxing - and I loved the coaching side of things. I was ready to work in sports and realised that if I were to get to the point I wanted – which is where I am now – I needed to get a degree. I went back to college and got an HNC in Sport. That gave me an entry route to second year at Abertay.

The demand for highly qualified sport and exercise scientists is greater than ever – particularly practitioners equipped to work with elite athletes and teams, as well as those who can help prevent chronic diseases. This degree offers you the opportunity to gain the expertise for these roles. The scientific knowledge gained from this practical degree means you’ll be equipped to work with a wide range of populations, such as athletes, young people, older people, and those suffering from, or at risk of developing, a number of diseases.

For the first two years, you would take Sport and Exercise as a foundation. After that, you can specialise or carry on studying that pathway. I think the thing that helped me most were the practical sessions and my time coaching through Active Schools - a programme aimed at providing more sporting opportunities before, during and after the school day. All the research we were asked to do and the weekly activities also helped open my eyes to the other sides of sport. The versatility of the courses and experience of the tutors also helped to shape my way of looking at things.

Keen to uncover what makes sport tick? Interested in the principles of management? Ready to explore the relationship between the two? This degree gives you the best of both worlds, making you a highly desirable candidate for high-level sports clubs seeking business-savvy graduates. We prepare you for a management career in sports. Strength and Conditioning

Tatenda Nyatsanza

Lecturer at Glasgow Clyde College

The whole experience was really good. It’s turned me into a person who wants to do a little bit of everything. The way that university was structured was a good basis for that. I was juggling placements and work and doing course work. That’s translated into me having three jobs and being busy! I’m still in contact with my university friends, we talk to each other all the time.

Strength and Conditioning (S&C) is an integral component for a wide range of amateur and professional sport worldwide. But S&C practitioner roles are not just confined to sport. The industry is constantly evolving into other areas such as the military, the police service, the fire service and more. This degree is Scotland’s only undergraduate programme accredited by the International Universities Strength and Conditioning Association (IUSCA)*, and formally recognised by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) under their Education Recognition Programme (ERP). Accreditations like these recognise the advancement of skills and education in this area. *Students who graduate with a 2.1 or above are also eligible for a personal IUSCA accreditation too.

For the first two years, you would take Sport and Exercise as a foundation. After that, you can specialise or carry on studying that pathway. The degrees in this portfolio include: • BSc (Hons) Physical Activity and Health • BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise • BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science • BSc (Hons) Sports Development and Coaching • BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning If you’re joining us from college, you can often join in Year 3, meaning you can choose your specialism from the get-go. abertay.ac.uk 195

TERMS AND CONDITIONS DISCLAIMER

DATA PROTECTION

Courses, the content of courses, entry requirements, regulations and related matters are under constant review in light of current circumstances and may change from time to time with some courses being altered withdrawn or replaced. Circumstances out with the University’s control, such as industrial action or the departure of staff, may result in it not being possible or appropriate to continue to provide courses that were previously offered.

Any personal data provided by you may be processed by the University in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. The University holds information about you in order to manage student recruitment, admission, registration, study, examination, graduation and other student services such as accommodation and careers. Information is passed between various sections of the University for operational reasons and may also be disclosed to external agencies to which the University has obligations (for example: Council Tax Registration Officers, Electoral Registration Officers, Scottish Funding Council, Higher Education Statistics Agency, Student Loans Company and Research Councils). You should refer to the University’s Data Protection Policy and Student Privacy Notice at abertay.ac.uk/legal for more information. If you have any queries about data protection, please contact foi@abertay. ac.uk.

As a result of this, the University reserves the right not to provide any particular course and to make alterations and modifications to courses and the delivery of courses if it reasonably considers such actions to be necessary. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information in this Prospectus as at the time of publication. However, it has been published in advance of the academic year to which it relates and applicants are advised to visit the University’s website at abertay.ac.uk to check up-to-date course and other information.

CHANGES TO YOUR PROGRAMME 1.

5.

6. 7.

At the time of making an offer, the University will provide you with information on your programme title and core modules, and will endeavour not to change these other than in the circumstances described below. A programme title may change, for example, to reflect developments in the subject. If the University intends to change the title of your programme, you will be informed of the proposed change and will be entitled either to change to the new title or to retain the original title. Core modules are not expected to change during your programme of study, but the content will be updated. However, in some disciplines the subject develops rapidly, and so it is possible that core modules may need to be replaced to reflect the change. Your programme information indicates how likely this might be for your subject. Option or microcredentials may change over time; your programme information sets out possible option modules, but the options or microcredentials listed may not run in a given year, or may be replaced by new modules, depending on staff availability and developments in the subject. The University’s portfolio of programmes changes over time, with new programmes being introduced and others being withdrawn. Where a decision is taken to withdraw a programme, a teachingout arrangement will be put in place to enable those students already registered for the relevant programme to complete the programme within the normal period of study. Where a programme is accredited by a professional body, the University may be required to change the programme to meet the professional body’s requirements. In all cases, the University will communicate with students and applicants affected by a programme change as soon as it has been approved. In most cases, this will be in the academic year before the change happens. There are, however, limited circumstances that generally cannot be anticipated where changes may need to be made with less notice.

ABERTAY STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION As required by the Education Act 1994, the University Court gives notice that a student has the right not to be a member of AbertaySA and that any student who exercises this right should not be unfairly disadvantaged in regard, for example, to the provision of the services offered by AbertaySA. The University Court considers that it does not require to make alternative arrangements in respect of the services provided by AbertaySA.
