Incredibly Useful Tips For Expats Who Can’t Decide… Rent, Buy or Rent to Buy?
Buying a property in Spain as an expat is fairly straightforward, however, like most things can get complicated with poor advice or different processes from region to region. Here in the Costa del Sol, there are over 1,920 real estate agents, most offering services that include rentals and sales. Undoubtedly, a good Real Estate Agent will understand all the nuances and will guide you through the process to make it as hassle and stress free as possible.
Born and raised in the North east of England, Mike Smith moved to Spain in 2002 looking for a new challenge. He found it in the Costa del Sol, where he saw an opportunity and started First Choice Spain.
Since its inception, Mike and his business has seen the roller coaster of change and challenges in the Costa del Sol property market, and he is proud that First Choice Spain is better prepared than ever and also able to meet the new and exciting challenges ahead in the Spanish property sector.
This month, we highlight a Real Estate agent who has 21 years of experience here in the Costa del Sol and can share with you some advice and guidance whether you are seeking to rent, buy or let or sell.
Meet Mike Smith, owner of First Choice Spain.
It has been mentioned by numerous fellow agents alike that Mike’s knowledge of property on the Costa del Sol is verging on encyclopedic, and he enjoys sharing his experience and guidance with his colleagues, clients and friends.
First Choice Spain has helped thousands of Expat clients from all over the world to buy, rent or sell property in Spain, and has consequently
become one of the most established and most trusted real estate brands, along the length and breadth of the Costa del Sol.
As a company, they have learned to understand the best areas for each client, advise about the pitfalls to watch out for, and whether you’re a buyer, seller or renter, Mike’s goal is to get you the best deal.
Give Mike and his team at First Choice Spain a call, whether advice, recommendations, Renting, Buying or Selling
Renting as a Tenant
Renting a property in Spain is fairly similar to renting anywhere else in Europe. Spanish law requires the tenant to pay the landlord a minimum of one month’s rent in advance when signing a contract. If the property is furnished a landlord may ask for two months’ rent to cover the potential cost of damaged furniture. When your contract is up the landlord will carry out an inspection before refunding your deposit. In order to set up a rental agreement you as the tenant will need to have a Spanish bank account and a passport or NIE number.
Renting as a Landlord
For property owners looking to rent their properties, it’s highly recommended to seek out a fully integrated rentals and property management service. This means the Management agency will take care of sourcing tenants and carrying out background checks, as well as drawing up the necessary contracts and conditions, collecting deposits and rent payments. They can also be responsible for taking care of any domestic emergencies, and should provide on-going property maintenance on your behalf.
Renting to Buying
One of the big advantages of rent-to-buy contracts is your rent paid in advance is then discounted from the agreed purchase price. This may be useful if you actually wish to stay in your rental home permanently and buy it. Further, you can agree that during the time of use of the property, the selling landlord cannot offer the property
to the market, effectively reserving an exclusive option of purchase for you, for the whole duration of the contract.
However, if you have decided to finish renting and buy somewhere else, before searching for a new home or investment property you should give some thought to what kind of property you are looking for and its reason. This means understanding the ideal size of the property, the area, necessary nearby amenities and most importantly the budget available. When you have settled on these factors it is time to speak to a local agent who knows the area. An invaluable partner and ally, your appointed agent will be able to assess your needs and help you to find a property that best matches your requirements and preferences.
Your agent can then set up viewings on potential properties. When you have found a property you like it is important to hold a second viewing at a different time of day. Your agent will advise how much to offer but this is ultimately a decision for you to make. If the offer is accepted, you will be asked to pay a deposit to secure the property and to sign a sale agreement. It is at this point that both parties will agree on a completion day, generally between 6 to 8 weeks from the point of signing the sale agreement.
Costs
If you are buying property in Spain you should bear in mind that there are additional costs on top of the property price. Additional costs are generally between 10 to 11% of the purchase price. The biggest expense you will face when buying a notary and land registry fees.

Funny old world
In the small town of Blokhus, Denmark, the world’s tallest sandcastle has been constructed. Weighing in at nearly 5,000 tonnes and soaring to a height of 20 metres, it has exceeded its predecessor by three metres. Master builder Wilfred Stijger took inspiration from the global pandemic when creating this masterpiece and included a striking representation of the virus wearing a crown atop the castle - alluding to its worldwide control. Assisted by 30 expert sand sculptors, he added vibrant local features such as windsurfing, beach houses, fish and lighthouses to make it even more spectacular. Unfortunately though, this remarkable work of art will not stand the test of time - containing only 10 percent clay with glue for extra protection against winter weather, it is expected to be lost by next year.
Beach Body Fit in 12 Weeks
by Matt NuttallWho are you and where are you from?
I’m Matt and I’m from Rochdale just outside Manchester
You are an Expat living in Marbella, what attracted you to the Costa del Sol?
The prospect of an outdoor lifestyle more conducive to being fit and healthy, and of course the sunshine!
Why did you become a personal trainer?
By accident at first just to make money whilst at university, but I found that I loved helping people achieve their goals so much and I’m coming up to 20 years in the job!
What are your personal fitness goals?
Still the same as they’ve always been, to be bigger, stronger, faster, leaner and more flexible!
What qualifications have you earned?
I have BSc Hons in Sports Science, Certi-
fied Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the NSCA, England Amateur Boxing Coach, Gym Instructor Level 3 and a ton of other courses I have done and forgotten about.
Have you trained anyone Famous?
I worked with Frank Grillo over in LA, I’ve trained Nikki Sanderson, Lee Ryan, Tony Jeffries and a bunch of premiership footballers and professional boxers over the years.
What types of fitness classes do you do?
I specialise in bodybuilding style training, getting people lean and toned, and I also teach boxing and kickboxing. I´m a former England Team Kickboxer.
What do you know about nutrition?
I know that nutrition has much more to do with the psychology of an individual and habits, and I have been a student of nutrition for over 20 years.
What would you say to someone who is anxious about starting fitness exercises?
Take it one step at a time, do something simple to begin with, and if you are worried or nervous then I would hire a coach to take you through everything and if they are good, they will make you feel at ease right away!
Matt’s Routine to get Beach Body Ready!
Summer is one of those times that can creep up on us if we aren’t aware and if you go by the popular gym saying that ´summer bodies are made in the winter´ then you might be thinking you have left it a little late already! But don´t worry, there’s still time to get your summer body ready and here’s how!
Day 1
Upper Body Push
A-Chest press
B-Seated Shoulder press
C-Incline Chest Press
D-Dumbbell Shoulder Press
E-Cable Fly Machine
F- Tricep Pushdown
G-Rope Tricep Pushdown
Day 2
Upper Body Pull
A-Lat Pulldown
B-Seated Row
C-Single Arm Dumbbell Row
D-Dumbbell Bicep Curls
E-Ez Bar Bicep Curls

This program can be worked with a day off in between each workout, so ideally Monday, Wednesday and Friday would be your workout days. You´ll complete each exercise before moving onto the next, so you´re going to do 3 sets of 10-15 reps of exercise A before moving onto exercise B. Between each set you´re going to rest a maximum of 90 seconds before performing the next set.
In addition to hitting the gym 3 times in the week, you are going to shoot for a simple step count each day of ten thousand steps. On days when you find yourself less active, you will have to get outside for a walk or hit the treadmill after your workouts to actually get the steps in.
Day 3
Legs
A-Leg Press Machine
B-Leg Extension
C-Lying Hamstring Curls
D-Reverse Lunges
E-Abductor Machine
F-Hack Squat Machine
Nutrition
In terms of nutrition, for the first few weeks you are going to want to track everything you are eating, either by using an app such as myfitnesspal, or just writing it down manually. Studies have shown that just the act of tracking what you are eating is enough to elicit a change in body weight, call it a level of self awareness and self accountability. I´m pretty sure people nowadays have an understanding of what foods they should consume less of when fat loss is their primary goal. So we´re just going to work on tidying your diet up a little, small steps before delving deeper into nutrition!
You’re going to hit the gym at least 3 times per week! Here’s what that will look like!

Never Suffer From Fitness Class Boredom Ever Again!
We’re now three months into 2023, and firmly at the halfway stage to Summer! Fitness and health are at the forefront of many people’s mind, yet some find the prospect of pounding the streets or hitting the gym daunting, uninspiring or simply mundane.
If you are the kind of person where Doggy Yoga doesn’t cut it, Pilates is so last year and the prospect of donning boxing gloves for a touch of Boxercise is too aggressive, you are not alone! Whilst all exercise is good exercise, there are a lot of people like you who are searching for an adrenaline pumping and exciting way to get fit.
Something different, something that works, something that stimulates pride, and a sense of achievement. Well, here at Costalink Magazine, we have discovered classes that do all this and are as far away from routine as you can possibly get. If you consider yourself a bit of a gymnast and don’t mind heights, aerial silks and hoops may be the exciting and challenging fitness class for you!
Aerial silks are exactly as they sound; two lengths of incredibly strong material hung from the ceiling that you can climb and manipulate around your body to help you hold different positions at various heights from the ground. This is a great core strength workout because you’re needing to move and suspend your body whilst maintaining control over the silks as you climb. As you progress, it’s apparently really easy to build the difficulty, and the brave amongst you could even progress to daring drops where you catch yourself mere feet from the floor!
Expat Hayley Cronin, a self confessed tattooed, rock climbing aerialist, is such the person who needs the next level adrenaline, She owns an Aerial Display Performance Act, that incorporates circus skills in the air to add the spectacular to events like launches, festivals and the like!
Hayley has also been teaching aerial fitness for 11 years, incorporating Aerial Hoops, Silks, and body conditioning and is passionate to share her expertise, skills and advice and teach people to enjoy life upside down!
Based in Marbella, Hayley created Marbella Aerial Fitness and a series of classes with the intention to help people with fitness, and to help build confidence, bravery and skills. Popular amongst children from the age 5 upwards, Hayley has classes to suit all levels, and even throws kids aerial parties! Perfect for adults alike, Hayley’s coaching style builds body confidence and promotes self esteem. As your skills progress, you become increasingly confident in your physical abilities.
Hayley says
“I love it more and more everyday. Of all the disciplines I teach, my favourite has to be silks. I love ‘big’ strength moves and drops, anything that has that wow factor! My teaching style is very fitness orientated, I’m all about getting a good workout and releasing those endorphins. I have a real passion for hard work and anything that requires some strength and determination, both physically and mentally”.
So if you’re in the mood to challenge yourself, meet like minded people, achieve the spectacular and relieve yourself of boredom that sometimes sets in whilst getting fit and strong physically and mentally, then this Aerial exercise is perfect to try. I have seen the positive effects it has had with some friends, who in turn have also made friends for life with their Aerial buddies! What’s stopping you?

Feature by Ian LucasTop 5 Trends That Are Changing Our Health & Wellness
Living on the Costa del Sol is attractive to many because the pace of life, weather and general location are appreciated to learn to lead a healthier life.
How we positively improve our health has evolved a lot in the past few years and people are making breakthroughs every day then sharing so we can choose how to live a healthier lifestyle. Taking care of yourself includes the mind, body, and soul, no matter how busy you become. Read on to find out about the top health trends today!
1. Taking Wellness Sabbaticals
A wellness sabbatical is a break taken for rest and relaxation, or to experience new or different environments. The idea behind the “wellness” sabbatical is the idea that longer timeframes are necessary for well-being. Often when people take a break from work, they return to their old habits because they are not able to make lasting changes in their personal lives. A wellness sabbatical is more than just taking a break from work. It includes personal growth, mindfulness, and other aspects of wellness such as nutrition and fitness.
2. Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent fasting is a dieting practice that involves alternating between periods of fasting and eating. The dieting practice, which can be done on a variety of schedules, has been gaining traction in the health space for its benefits. Some people choose to do it for religious reasons (Muslims fast for Ramadan, for example). Others use
it as a way to eat healthier and manage body goals. Additionally, intermittent fasting is gaining ground among entrepreneurs and other workers who are looking to maximise their productivity through more efficient eating habits.
3. Telemedicine
Telemedicine is the use of a telecommunications technology to provide clinical healthcare, health advice, or mental health services to patients remotely. This is done either through live interactive video and audio feed or through store-and-forward interactions such as email and videoconferencing. More than ever, people are becoming more open to the idea of receiving medical care without stepping into a doctor’s office.
4. Self Care
Self care is watching out for your well-being - one of the absolute best ways to invest in your future. This can involve anything that nurtures you, and is a time to reconnect with yourself. Self care is important because it prevents us from feeling burnt out and helps us maintain our sanity in the world we live in today. It’s also a way for us to take good care of ourselves and our mental health by reducing stress levels.
5. IV Vitamin Therapy
Maybe you’ve heard about the latest celebrity trend…? IV Vitamin Therapy is said to help minimise stress, and decrease the risk of heart disease. Other benefits claimed include healthier skin and will improve your performance, increase your energy, prevent premature ageing and boost your immune system. It is also available on the Costa del Sol!

We are delighted to welcome Touring Professional, Rickard Strongert, as Costalink’s Golf expert who will share simple, concise and easy to relate tips to improve your golf from beginner to pro! Rickard comes with a wealth of experience and success in the game.
His passion for golf shines through his coaching. We assure you that for anyone keen on taking up golf for the first time, or for any golfer who wishes to improve their game, Rickard is your Man!
This month, Rickard explains why Warm Up Routines are Your New Best Friend!!
If You Want To Be A Winner, Make Your Warm Up Routine Count!
The main reason it’s essential to create a warm up routine before you play is to prepare your muscles and joints for the game ahead and to achieve a nice rhythm in your swing. Therefore it is important to warm up in the right order.
1. Warm Up With Pitch Shots
If you look at professionals on the driving range before a game, you will see nearly all of them start their warm up by hitting pitch shots with a sand wedge or pitching wedge. This warms up your muscles slowly and helps get your swing into a nice flowing rhythm. It’s important to practice your pitch shots so this is a good opportunity.
2. Practice Body Rotations
A good way to warm up is to practice body rotation. Simply hold a club horizontally across your shoulders and stand up right. Make sure your feet are apart and firm. Start rotating the club along with your shoulders and hips back and forth ensuring your body always follows through. Once you have repeated this several times, then lean forwards from your hips, and take up your set up position, and continue to turn around your spinal axis to practice the correct body rotation for your swing.
3. Practice Half Swings
Once you have practiced your body rotation, take a pitch or sand wedge and hit between five and ten half swings. Then play five balls with alternate Irons, such as seven and five, before turning to hybrid and fairway woods. Finally, take out the Driver. Concentrate on swinging the ball away rather than hitting it. The key phrase to remember here is “Swing on Hit”. Make sure you keep your balance as you swing.
4. Finish With More Pitches
Finally, you can return to the pitching wedge or sand wedge to finish off with a few more pitch shots and reinforce that relaxed, flowing motion.
You are now ready to go out on the course and play a great round of Golf!
An Indian Curry Infused with Culture, Love & Flavour…
Iam British, from Italian descent, and I have been brought up on Fish and Chips, Roast beef, anything and everything Italian and of course, curry. I love curry. I have lived here on the Costa del Sol for nearly 14 years and we’re never far away from restaurants serving the diverse food of the Indian subcontinent, which makes my traditional weekly Curry fix as contrasting as the restaurants amongst us here.
The story of Indian food in Britain is complex; one involving bitterness, beer and gooey quantities of ghee. It remains a mystery why so many are just so terrible. Often you get dubious meat cooked up in sauces with a sugary oil slick. Plus there’s those deep-fried doughy onion bhajis, pungent dishes overflowing with raw garlic, and grated cheddar half melted on your spinach trying to pass itself off as a sag paneer.
Not so at Maa Indian Restaurant in Marbella. Nestled in the interesting setting of Aloha Gardens, just 1km from Puerto Banus, with a magnificent backdrop of its giant waterfall, an ornate and illuminated pond, complete with a bridge that leads you to white linen dressed tables with intimate table lamps on the outside garden terraces. Early summer evenings in this setting just adds an extra element as you take in the aroma’s in the air that create an increased anticipation for the food you are about to receive.
A tiny restaurant, with only six tables, seating around 18 people, MAA’s unique gardens create a bustling environment without intrusion of up to 80 diners during the summer months. The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff are extremely friendly and warm. They remember their customers and do all they can to please.
The food is just exquisite! Fresh, tasty, super flavour. The chef will accommodate for your taste more chilli, more ginger, but for me, I prefer to eat as I find it, as that’s how the chef intends it. The menu includes popular ever-presents, such as Tandoori, Madras, Jalfrezi, Korma and the rest of the usual suspects, however, there is a lot of focus on the chef’s actual specialities…
On this visit, which regrettably was for a table of one, I ordered a starter of a Chicken Lollipop,
which are legs, rolled back, marinated and juicy with a crisp outer, together with Samosa. These are simply melt in the mouth parcels of intensely delicious flavours, meat or veggie. Maybe a little on the large size when having two starters! I trusted the Chef, and ordered one of his specialities, Murgh Masala. A tandoori chicken dish, with minced meat, encapsulated in a smooth yogurt based sauce which was at a perfect spice level. Having had two starters, I opted for a cheese Naan, no rice. This dish offered an array of flavours, reflective of the diversity and variance found in the cultures and languages of India.
At The Maa Indian Restaurant, they regard their cuisine as a performing art. I’d simply say they are consistently great, the recipes are delicious, good sizes and the service and setting is superb and I think at a reasonable price. My bill for the aforementioned setting and two (three) course meal, with a Cobra beer served in a frosty cold glass whilst perusing the menu, a glass of red house wine with the main course and a bottle of still water came to just under €44.00. Oh, and they do takeaway and delivery also….
Highly Recommended.

Why You Should Maintain (or Even Increase) Your Marketing Investment in 2023
Contrary to popular belief, Entrepreneurs and small and medium businesses should maintain — or even increase — their marketing investments when it seems costs are increasing and the economy is facing a potential downturn.
When an economy takes a downturn, costs are rising and the word “recession” is uttered across the mainstream media, there is often one standard response: cut the budget. For many small businesses, the first on the chopping block is marketing. This is the one area of businesses where results may seem intangible, and owners could assume — at their peril — that slicing away some of the perceived marketing investment will make little difference to the end result. The truth could not be more different.
I recall the world global credit crash in 2008 with mixed feelings. The initial news that consumers and companies were to have access to credit and overdrafts reduced and even worse, removed, was met with gloom…. How could business suddenly finance cash flow, how could consumers suddenly change buying habits from credit cards to cash debits? Demand slowed for many businesses, and when you experience an unforced destruction of demand for your product or service, you have to make a correct decision quickly to avoid the business hitting reverse gear with potential terminal effects.
This is when counter intuitive decisions generally win. Whilst many businesses batten down the hatches and try to “ride it out”, or slash prices and margins to attract new buyers, those that see the situation as an opportunity to refocus their marketing purpose, their message and reidentify which clients to attract, will stand out from the crowd. This in itself maintains your business visibility, and importantly accessibility to buyers in a marketplace that is seemingly less crowded.
In the business I owned at that time, we addressed the “credit crunch” problem, by introducing automated advance monthly payment plans with a low entry level. We shouted about it, we broke down the low risk, free credit proposition without slashing prices, appealing to the habits of the consumer at that time. Online had become crowded and the return on investment was diminishing. So we pushed a Direct Response marketing campaign and communicated directly with our specific audience, away from the crowd. We advertised in more magazines than previously, we supported that with strong calls to actions and followed it up with direct mail. We put ourselves “physically” in front of our prospective clients. Our marketplace competitors all retracted spend, and we were the only company in our niche to divert our investment to offline activities and as the results came in, we invested more. The principle behind this is every business needs more than one route to market. In fact, it’s proven through the time of passage, businesses should have a
minimum of seven pillars of marketing activity, so if one or two slow or no longer work, you still have routes to market to maintain the business. It’s not reliant on one or two channels. It’s a continuous evolution. In 2023, there are over 18 different primary disciplines of marketing, so a good strategy is more essential than ever before.
The results spoke for themselves. During those challenging times, we grew that business to report revenues five times greater than the previous financial year. By 2010, we had acquired two competitors who didn’t invest in their marketing in the same way. Sure, we cut some expenditure fat, in facilities we changed suppliers, renegotiated insurance and generally procured better than before, as companies were offering supply deals to compensate for their demand slow down… Where we saved, we reinvested in marketing and we grew.
Continuously analysing your market, your referral process, your advertising, your audience and your services and product is a part of Entrepreneurial and Business Life. It’s fascinating, it’s challenging and it’s satisfying. There are always solutions to problems, and cutting back on reaching your marketplace is not one of them.

Could the Costa del Sol be the new Spanish Hollywood?
It is true that this part of Spain has been increasingly used as a backdrop for films. With its stunning scenery, excellent weather and wealth of cinematic locations, it is easy to see why this area of the country could indeed become a new European centre for movie-making.
Netflix is taking full advantage of the Costa del Sol’s beauty and production capabilities, shooting three of its series in the region. Local Fresco Film production company, run by Peter Welter and Silvia Aráez, has gained much respect from the likes of Hollywood for its two Location Managers Guild International Awards (the Oscars of the profession) for its work on Game of Thrones.
This summer it is behind Netflix’s big productions Red Book, Kaos and Scandinavian series, Exit.
Scenes for Red Book are currently being filmed in San Pedro de Alcántara, with future filming planned in Estepona, Marbella and other nearby locales over several weeks’.

With seemingly so few job openings outside of the Costa’s hospitality industry these days, you may have a tough time sliding into a new role. Relatively few people in the expat community work as executives for overseas companies. So, for those who at some point have to or want to work for others here, you should know that there are relatively few honest, secure, well paid employment opportunities available to expats. They do exist, but you have to work hard to find them.
Most of the English speaking jobs here involve no
or very little basic salary and of course no benefits of any kind. Paid holidays, social security, health cover, and maternity leave are very hard to find. Where a basic salary is offered, it often turns out to be a draw against future earnings.
By far, the largest section of the expat job market here is sales related. Many expats have lost their savings due to failed attempts at setting up a business and end up working in sales companies out of sheer necessity. Because of the options available and plenty of workers contemplating changes, you’re likely to encounter some competition to land and find the job you want.
1. Research, research, research.
Find the companies already here that might need your skills and experience. Make sure you have the correct permissions, visas, driving licences and so forth. Also find out the history of the business, where is it registered, how long has it been trading, do they have online reviews? Do your research to help prepare the approach.
2. Prepare, prepare, prepare.
Avoid thinking of the approach or interview as your first step toward a new job. Once you set the appointment, it’s time to take an even deeper dive to learn as much as you can about the company and position. Ideally, you did some of this legwork when you created a custom resume and cover letter, but for the interview, you need to know more. After arming yourself with all the information you can, practise answers to questions you expect the interviewer to ask.
3. Decide what the interviewer should know about you.
Using the job description as a guide, create a list of points you want to communicate to show how your experience and knowledge fit the role. During the interview, pay attention to opportunities for sharing these details about your skill set. Most interviewers will give you the opportunity to add information you haven’t covered; use this time to deliver a succinct summary of how you can succeed in the position.
4. Create your own list of questions.
An interview isn’t just about determining whether you’re a fit for a job; you also need to decide whether the job is a fit for you. Think about what you need to know in order to feel confident accepting an offer. You might organise your thoughts by considering what is essential in a new job and what aspects are “nice to have.”
5. Present yourself as a winning candidate.
Impressions are everything when it comes to interviews. Dress to impress with well-fitted clothing appropriate for the job and practise good grooming habits, including details like trimming your nails and minimising distractions like pet hair. Arrive early enough that you’re not rushed or flustered when you check in for your appointment. Use good posture, a firm handshake and a clear, confident voice. Speak authoritatively but respectfully and try to make the interview a comfortable, conversational exchange.
6. Leave a lasting impression.
Before you end the interview, ask for clear insight on the next steps in the process. Within 24 hours, send follow-up messages to each person you met with. Thank them for their time and include references specific to your conversation, such as elaborating on a question or reiterating a key point. This shouldn’t be a copy-paste message, but rather a tailored one to each individual. Close by reiterating your interest and how your skills are a fit.
We recommend you consider these top tips to help you make a great impression and land the Costa del Sol job of your dreams:

How to Hire the Right Person on The Costa del Sol
Over the course of my business lifespan, I have interviewed a fair few people. But rarely did a key role become available, such as a leader and or, a Director. As a consequence of importance, I found my interview techniques and environment change to a less conformative or traditional format in the pursuit of these key people. So much so, and with such a high degree of success for these roles, I changed our complete recruitment process from top to bottom so we could find the right people at the first time for our business and culture at all levels.
I also asked other entrepreneurs and business owners, “How do you hire?” Their answers were and still are always insightful because after years of interviewing countless job candidates, they’ve also learned the best approaches to help them get right to the core of who a candidate is and how he or she will work within a company and a team. In the Costa del Sol, we have unique challenges in addition to the norm. It’s a relatively transient and international arena, and yet we all need to find that will, reliability and consistency. Is the person on an extended holiday? Are they truly committed to doing what the job asks?
I’ve discovered a typical job interview here on the Costa del Sol is little more than a social get together with some predictable choreography. A conference-room meeting, a pristine résumé and the standard questions: Where do you want to be in five years? What do you consider your big-
gest failure? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Add in some small talk — maybe the candidate and the interviewer have something in common, and that’s largely it. The candidate seems good, and the references check out. So an offer is made, and fingers are crossed that everything works out. Then, a month later, the new hire misses an important deadline or starts complaining about the work. Cue that sinking feeling: You start wondering if hiring this person was a mistake.
Of course there’s a better way. Here are some ideas that may help you hire the right person: They do exist if you look in the right areas for the right qualities and embrace a different approach.
1. Be creative.
Every candidate will be prepared for commonplace interview questions. Find new ways to truly understand how a person thinks. Make it unique and relevant to your business and specifically for the role you are seeking to fill.
2. Be encompassing.
Put the candidate in situations where they are more likely to show their true selves. Take the pressure OFF. For example, if they really are a good sales person, they’ll be more than happy to invest their time with your top salesperson. You’ll see very quickly how they interact and how they listen. Encompassing their natural professional environment makes a huge difference.
3. Allow your employees to help.
You are not the only person who is going to work with this candidate. There is likely already a key person or a team of employees you trust that will interact with him or her every day. Their opinion should matter. Let them spend some time with the candidate.
4. Take Them On a Tour
Show the candidates around your company, and introduce them to some colleagues. Things to pay attention to: Are they asking questions about what everybody does and how things work? Are they curious? Do they treat everyone they meet with respect, and show interest in what they do? Do their potential colleagues receive the candidate positively? At the end of the day, you’re building a team and character matters.
5. Share A Meal
Take a candidate out for lunch or dinner. Going to a restaurant will reveal all sorts of clues about someone. For many leaders, this is the most important part of the interview process.
The key is to watch whether the candidate is considerate of others — an essential quality of effective team players.
This is not an exhaustive list, just some base pointers that have helped me and others find the right people at the right time for the right job. The candidates appreciated it too. Good luck!

What is the Advantage of Costalink Magazine Advertising?
Magazine advertising is one of the most powerful marketing tools available, and an ad placed in a Costalink Magazine can improve sales and promotion or Brand awareness enormously.
Costalink is the No.1 Local Magazine and keeps us all in touch with our local area along the whole Costa. Costalink is trusted, interesting, quirky, full of local information and businesses and a really useful source of information for over 16 years.
Costalink is the perfect direct niche publication for you and here’s 10 benefits why:
1. This is Your Audience - Readers are within 1 hour away!
Your business is local, and Costalink Magazine is the ideal way to speak directly to your potential customers, who are at most one hour away from you! Like you, they are interested and involved in our local community, so they are interested in you too. Because they are proud of where they live and because visitors are interested in the area they are visiting, Costalink readers and subscribers prefer to support and buy from local businesses.
2. What People Take In During Their Time Out
There’s plenty to attract our attention on websites and social media, but typically that lasts 20 seconds. Sitting down with a hot drink and a Costalink Magazine is different. It’s a quiet, relaxed time we have awarded ourselves. There isn’t any competition; we’ll just look at and read what interests us, and that’s a great opportunity for our partners.
3. Being Noticed and Remembered
There’s a lot of media traffic out there, and we learn to filter it. In Costalink Magazine, there are only so many pages, with just a few advertisements on each page. You have a much better chance of being noticed and your local advertisements will be more memorable than their digital equivalents.
4. Reader Confidence
Fake news and cybercrime have made many people hesitant about online engagement. In contrast, readers trust their local Costalink Magazine as a source of personalised, non biassed, local information, so they are more likely to trust you too. There’s very little risk for them in making a visit, a call, WhatsApp or sending an email.

5. Opportunities To Be Seen
While online and social media have been ‘in the moment’, your local Costalink Magazine has staying power. It will stay on a coffee table, in an office or café for a whole month, until the next edition is published. It is usually picked up, taken and shared with family and friends. That means your advertisement can be seen over and over again.
6. Spin-off Brand Benefits
Your local Costalink Magazine has a great reputation for interest and authority. People trust what they see, and your brand and business will benefit as a result.
7. Staying power
Costalink Magazine has been around for a long time, we are celebrating 16 years in 2023, yet we maintain our freshness and relevance so readers and businesses who already advertise recognise its value. Commit to a campaign of advertising and you can build your recognition.
8. Extra Opportunities
