About us

We pride ourselves on offering a learning environment that educates, motivates and inspires our students. From our colleges in Stockton, Redcar and Billingham, we deliver a variety of honours degrees, foundation degrees, HNCs, degree level equivalent and professional courses, with full and part-time options available.

Classes are made up of adults of all ages, including those straight out of college as well as mature students. If you have been out of the classroom for a while or don’t have the traditional entry qualifications, we can offer support and guidance to ease your return to education.

Our access to higher education courses are a great way to prepare you for the demands of university study. Taking pride in our surrounding communities, we work closely with employers and organisations from the private, public and third sectors. This ensures the knowledge and skills we teach are up to date, relevant and meet the needs of our students, employers and the wider economic demands of the region.

HIGHER EDUCATION CENTRES

Our dedicated Higher Education Centres at Stockton Riverside College and Redcar and Cleveland College offer space for higher education students to study independently, in groups or network with other students. With comfortable seating areas and dedicated IT facilities, we have quiet study zones as well as space for group study.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRES

All of our higher education students can access our Learning Resource Centres at Stockton Riverside College, Redcar and Cleveland College and Bede Sixth Form College. Each has an extensive range of learning materials to support your studies, along with a variety of ICT facilities. Our LRC teams are also on hand to offer support.

VLE

All of our students have access to the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where you can communicate with your tutor and access programme materials. The VLE can be accessed remotely, making it easier to continue your studies at home.

LEISURE FACILITIES

As a student you will have access to our leisure facilities across all of our sites, this includes refectories, a restaurant, hair and beauty salons and access to our sport and gym facilities.

BEDE SPORTS CENTRE

We have our own dedicated sports centre at Bede Sixth Form College in Billingham. This includes a FIFA 1 standard, FA registered, flood-lit Astro pitch, a 10-metre-high climbing wall with cave features, a fitness suite with a full range of gym equipment and a four-court sports hall.

TECHNOLOGY

Our sites have some of the most advanced technology to help meet the demands of your course. This includes enhanced ICT facilities and industry-standard equipment relevant to your field of study.

ENGINEERING

We want to ensure we are equipping our students with the skills employers need, that’s why we have invested in brand new state of the art engineering facilities at Redcar and Cleveland College including...

> A purpose-built Programmable Logic Control (PLC) Room, including the latest software and hardware, enabling students to have real hands-on experience in PLC programming, developing and learning problem solving techniques.

> A Hydraulics and Pneumatics Training Room, complete with design software and a range of training stations. This enables students to design, build and test pneumatics and hydraulic circuits, linking theory to practice.

> We have enhanced our Automation and Process Control Area which now includes the Mitsubishi robotics, SCADA system and a dedicated manufacturing processing system.

> Our CAD Room has also been updated with new PCs, the latest software and widescreens for enhanced display of CAD drawings.

3G FOOTBALL PITCH

Our brand new, all-weather 3G football pitch at Redcar and Cleveland College was launched in July 2021 and is the ideal training facility for college students and the wider community!

CLEAN ENERGY EDUCATION HUB

The soon to be completed Clean Energy Education Hub at Redcar and Cleveland College will give you the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in the clean and renewable energy sector. Whether you are continuing in your studies, returning to education after many years out of the classroom or looking to retrain or upskill, we can help you to reach your personal goals.

Access to HE

Access to Higher Education courses are ideal for those who have been out of education for several years or without the traditional qualifications for entry into university. The Access to HE courses develop your knowledge and study skills ready for higher education.

Foundation degrees

Foundation degrees (FdA or FdSc) are heavily employment based and normally take two or three years of study. These courses offer opportunities for students from a range of backgrounds, including those with previous experience rather than conventional entry requirements.

HNCS

Higher National Certificates (Level 4) are designed to provide skills/career-based qualifications. They also enable students to progress to honours degree programmes.

Degree and degree top-up programmes

On completion of our foundation degrees, you can progress on to the final Top-Up Award, which is a one year programme that takes your qualification up to a full degree programme.

Teaching qualifications

We offer a variety of routes into teaching in the post-16 sector. Practical placement experience is an essential component of this programme. We offer part-time routes, on an in-service basis.

Professional programmes

We offer a variety of professional courses awarded by professional bodies. These are excellent preparation for or upskilling in careers such as accounting, business, financial services and human resource management.

A guide to Tariff points

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the central organisation that processes student applications for full-time higher education courses. UCAS uses a tariff system, known as UCAS points, which converts a wide range of qualifications into points.

This means you can use a variety of qualifications to help secure your place on an undergraduate course. Use this guide to work out how many tariff points you have and whether you meet our entry requirements.

Pre Access to Higher Education

Course Type: Blended learning

Length: 4 days

Entry Requirements: There are no entry requirements for the level 2 course yet there may be the need to sit a BKSB screening test to show what maths and English levels you are currently working at. A tutor will discuss with you your options after this screening.

Location:

Within the College this level 2 qualification is highly regarded as an excellent stepping stone for those wanting to enter the Access to Higher Education route into university. The Level 2 Qualification in skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development is also labelled as Pre-Access due to its success rate in helping those who have struggled with the initial maths and English screening tests for their desired Access choices.

WHAT WILL YOU DO: Using Calculations

The numeracy element of the course is based on developing understanding of numbers and data. The unit also focusses on being able to identify maths in real life situations.

Personal Career Preparation

The careers element of the course draws focus on personal progression, how you learn and what types of careers are available for those after Access and university.

Punctuation and Grammar Skills

The English element of the course is motivated by developing understanding of punctuation and grammar. The work involved helps essay development as well as creating a personal statement.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

The course includes the production of an electronic portfolio of evidence to show your newly developed skills. There are various methods of assessment such as production of a presentation, report, individual research and homework.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The course enables students to have confidence as they progress onto Access to HE and university. Currently at Stockton Riverside College and Redcar and Cleveland College we have various Access routes such as Health, Education, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences and Social Care.

Course Type: Access to Higher Education Diploma

Length: 1 year, part-time

Entry Requirements: All learners will be considered on their individual merits although recent relevant learning at level 2 is advantageous. All applicants will participate in an electronic information session. Following this, you will be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test to determine if a place can be offered.

Location:

The Access to Higher Education, Counselling Diploma, is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need or you may not have been in education for several years, then an Access to HE course could be the course for you. There is no upper-age limit for Access to HE courses.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The diploma is made up of a series of units which are individually graded. Subjects will include: Word Processing for Access, Study Skills, Communication Skills, Select and use of ICT for Access, Psychology, Counselling Theory, Professional Skills and Fundamental Skills of Counselling, Personal Development within Counselling

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

The production of an electronic portfolio of evidence is crucial. Assessment involves the writing of essays, reports, presentations, research and health promotion activities.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On successful completion of the access diploma students can apply to university for a place on an FdA in Counselling.

Course Type: Access to Higher Education Diploma

Length: 1 year, part-time

Entry Requirements: All learners will be considered on their individual merits although recent relevant learning at level 2 is advantageous. All applicants will participate in an electronic information session. Following this, you will be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test to determine if a place can be offered.

Location:

This course prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need or you may not have been in education for several years, then an Access to HE course could be the course for you. There is no upper-age limit for Access to HE courses.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The diploma is made up of a series of units which are individually graded. Subjects will include: Level 2 English Skills for Higher Education and Level 2 Maths. The graded level 3 units include subject areas such as Health Promotion, Human Biology, Professional Skills in Healthcare, Contemporary Care Practice, Immunopathology, Values Based Health Care and a Health and Care Research Project.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

The production of an electronic portfolio of evidence is crucial. Assessment involves the writing of essays, reports, presentations, research and health promotion activities.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On successful completion of the access diploma students can apply to university for a place on a range of health-related degrees or other higher education degree programmes. These include nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, dental nursing, physiotherapy and the Level 4 CERT HE in Health and Social Care.

All applicants will participate in an electronic information session. Following this, you will be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test to determine if a place can be offered.

This course prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need or you have not been in education for several years, then an Access to HE course could be for you. There is no upper-age limit for Access to HE courses.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The diploma is made up of a series of units which are individually graded. Subjects will include Level 2 English Skills for Higher Education and Maths and level 3 units such as Psychology, Contemporary Care Practice, Values and care development, English Literature, History, Sociology of Crime and Deviance, Social Welfare and a Humanities or Social Science research project.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Course Type: Access to Higher Education Diploma

Length: 1 year, part-time

Entry Requirements: All learners will be considered on their individual merits although recent relevant learning at level 2 is advantageous. All applicants will participate in an electronic information session. Following this, you will be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test to determine if a place can be offered.

Location:

The Access to Higher Education, Policing Diploma, is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need, then an Access to HE course could be for you. There is no upperage limit for Access to HE courses.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The diploma is made up of a series of units which are individually graded.

Subjects will include Level 2 English Skills for Higher Education, Professional Behaviours for Police Officers and Maths. Level 3 units include An Introduction to Law Enforcement, Crime in Context, The Sociology of Crime and Deviance, Psychology and a Law and Criminology Project.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

The production of an electronic portfolio of evidence is crucial. Assessment involves the writing of essays, reports, examinations, research and project work.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On successful completion of the access diploma students can apply to university for a place on a range of policing qualifications through foundation degrees or degree programmes all supported by the College of Policing.

Length: 1 year, part-time

Entry Requirements: All learners will be considered on their individual merits although recent relevant learning at level 2 is advantageous. All applicants will participate in an interview process. Following this you may be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test to determine if a place can be offered.

Location:

Social Care Studies

Course Type: Access to Higher Education Diploma

Length: 1 year, part-time

Entry Requirements: All learners will be considered on their individual merits although recent relevant learning at level 2 is advantageous. All applicants will participate in an interview process. Following this you may be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test to determine if a place can be offered.

Location:

The Access to Higher Education, Science Diploma, is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need, then an Access to HE course could be for you. There is no upperage limit for Access to HE courses.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The diploma is made up of a series of level 2 units which are subjects that will include Maths and English Skills for Higher Education. This then leads onto a series of graded units at level 3 in biology, chemistry, physics, immunopathology, maths and a scientific project.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

The production of an electronic portfolio of evidence is crucial. Assessment involves the writing of essays, reports, examinations, research and practical activities.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On successful completion of the access diploma students can apply to university for a place on a range of health and sciencerelated degrees or other higher education degree programmes. These include midwifery, physiotherapy, pharmacy, chemistry, biology, nutrition and radiography.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma, Social Care Studies, is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need, then an Access to HE course could be for you. There is no upper-age limit for Access to HE courses.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The diploma is made up of a series of units which are individually graded. Subjects will include Level 2 English Skills for Higher Education and Maths and level 3 units such as Contemporary Care Practice, Health Promotion, Professional Practice, Safeguarding, Principles of Social Work Practice and a Health and Care project.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The CILEx certificate in Legal Practice consists of six units* in total, three of which will be chosen law units and one practice unit which links to one (or more) of the law units, e.g. Contract Law and Civil Litigation or Criminal Law and Criminal Litigation. You will also need to complete two legal skills units, Client Care and Legal Research. There are a total of 14 law units to choose from including, but not limited to, Land Law, Tort Law, Immigration Law and Employment Law. Your unit options will be discussed at the interview stage.

Trainees will complete a mandatory module entitled Professional Skills. This module will require you to complete legal research on a given case study. You will specialise from day one of your programme and can qualify as a CILEx Lawyer within as little as two years. The course is also designed with flexibility in mind, allowing you to study through a blended delivery model consisting of face-to-face delivery and online learning. All trainees will be required to become members of CILEx and, as a law graduate, you’ll join CILEx as a CILEx Paralegal and begin specialising immediately.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Trainees will enter the programme at Advanced Stage and will complete a variety of modules including civil litigation and criminal practice, as well as conveyancing and wills and probate, with some additional material on legal accounts and legal technology. During my studies, I decided to progress all the way up to degree level. Health and Social Care (Top-up)

Course Type: BSc (Hons) Top-Up

Length: 1 year, full-time

Entry Requirements: Level 5 Foundation Degree in Health, Wellbeing and Social Support or an equivalent qualification. Any candidate who has already completed a research study as part of a different degree programme at level 5 or above may be considered for entry onto the programme. All applicants will need to have the equivalent of 240 credits, 120 at level 4 and 120 at level 5.

Due to the nature of the programme candidates will need to provide written references from two sources.

One of these should be an academic reference with the other being their work based mentor/supervisor in order to demonstrate their appropriateness to undertake and cope with the academic requirements. Levels of maturity and commitment to the course and professional development will be evaluated from reference material and during the interview process.

Applicants will require an interview to secure a place on this programme.

Location:

The BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care will provide you with the unique opportunity to engage with and learn about the wider concepts and developments within the health and social care sector in light of recent legislative and social policy developments. This is aimed at improving the existing provision, outcomes for service users and ultimately development of the health and social care workforce to the highest possible standards, including maximising personalisation and key quality care concepts.

Management and Administration of Medication in Social Care Settings

Course Type: NOCN Unit, Level 4

Length: Flexible delivery, 6 week course, part-time

Entry Requirements:

To be currently working in an organisation that supports clients who require medication

> Level 2 qualification related to safe handling of medicines

Location:

This module is designed for any person involved in management and administration of medicines whilst working within the health and social care sector. It is an ideal opportunity for healthcare staff to refresh their knowledge and understanding in line with current legislation, policy and guidance. The purpose of the module is to equip learners with the knowledge to understand the legislative framework governing the use of medication in a health or social care setting.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

> Legislation protecting the public: Medicines Act 1968, Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, Care Act 2014, Data Protection Act 2018, local policies and procedures

> Roles and responsibilities of those involved in prescribing, dispensing, administering, storing and disposing of medicines including consent and refusal

> Classification of medication; maintaining therapeutic levels

> Types of medication; to include a wide range of prescribed and over the counter medication. Controlled drugs

> Routes of administration

> Record keeping, disposal of medicines

> Maintaining standard precautions to include hygiene, handling, correct dosage, safe administration, storage

> Side effects/Adverse reactions and responding to these appropriately

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

If you are a manager or senior employee in a relevant role, this award provides you with the opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills in relation to quality assurance and quality improvement within the context of the management of medication. Errors in medication administration within the public, private health and social care sectors are a major concern for those using and delivering these services and account for financial loss as well as the human cost to those affected.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

You are assessed by one written assignment. The assignment requires you to undertake a medication risk assessment within your area of practice, identifying potential hazards at stages of the medication process. This is followed by recognition of the importance of robust policy and implementation of the policy with links to legislation and guidance.

Therapeutic Counselling

Entry Requirements: Entry requirements are an NQF Level 5 Foundation Degree in Counselling or an equivalent qualification. I previously attended Redcar and Cleveland college to study the Level 3 in Electrical Installations. I was shown the engineering facilities in the HE centre and from there knew I wanted to study a HNC. I enjoyed each module of the course as they were all new to me so I found them very interesting. The staff are very friendly and helpful and always make you feel welcome.

Higher Apprenticeships in Engineering

The Higher Apprenticeship Engineering Manufacturing Technicians standard at level 4 has been designed to provide the engineering, manufacturing and processing sector with high grade technicians and engineers who have practical skills, combined with a higher education qualification.

Typical job titles include:

Process engineer, manufacturing engineer quality, manufacturing production engineer, manufacturing procurement engineer, quality engineer, costing engineer, test and commissioning engineer, installation engineer, production support engineer and maintenance engineer.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

This apprenticeship includes a mandatory HNC qualification, dependent upon your specific job role and chosen in consultation with your employer. You can choose from:

> HNC Chemical Engineering

> HNC Electrical & Electronic Engineering

> HNC Instrumentation & Control Engineering

> HNC Manufacturing Engineering

> HNC Mechanical Engineering

Typical duration of the apprenticeship is 42 months.

You will attend College on a day release basis over approximately two years, whilst also being assessed for skills, knowledge and behaviours within the workplace. As part of the apprenticeship, you may also study work related training such as working at heights, rope access and confined spaces training.

WHERE WILL THIS APPRENTICESHIP LEAD?

This apprenticeship has professional recognition with IET and IMechE. Completion of the apprenticeship can lead onto HND and degree routes.

HOW WILL THIS APPRENTICESHIP BE DELIVERED?

The apprenticeship is delivered through classroom teaching, practical workshops and online study.

You will also be allocated an assessor who will visit you in the workplace to support the development of the evidence required for competency elements, such as skills, knowledge and behaviours.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

The apprenticeship is constantly assessed for skills, knowledge and behaviours. Final completion of the apprenticeship will consist of an End Point Assessment.

All HNC modules are assessed by assignments; each unit’s assessment is matched to the content of the unit. Each unit can be assessed at Pass, Merit or Distinction levels, which are combined at the end of the qualification to give an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction for the HNC.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their apprenticeships. In order to optimise success candidates will typically have 5 GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including mathematics*, English and a science, technology or engineering related subject, or 90+ credits in an engineering BTEC at level 3.

*As further guidance, the level of mathematics has an advisory GCSE level of Grade 5/6. Speak to us directly regarding your entry qualifications.

HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS

Much like our level 2 and 3 apprenticeships, our higher apprenticeships will give you the skills you need to excel in your chosen field whilst providing real world work experience. If you have A levels or a level 3 vocational course or apprenticeship qualifications you may be considered for a higher apprenticeship.

Do you have an interest in reading and writing and would like to develop your skills whilst gaining a nationally recognised qualification? Perhaps you are furthering your education or career and GCSE English is an essential requirement for your next step? Or maybe you want to develop confidence to enable you to support children and grandchildren in their studies? GCSE English could be the course for you!

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Study an exciting range of both fiction and non-fiction texts to develop the skills required when analysing unseen texts. Analyse the use of language and structure for a range of purposes across a range of activities. You will also develop your creative writing skills both for narrative and non-fiction writing.

The course also includes the study of spoken language with an opportunity to develop vital presentation skills.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

There is a mixture of continuous assessment methods throughout the year, including 2 mock exams, in addition to the final exams that are planned for June.

WHAT’S NEXT?

GCSE English is required in many professions such as teaching or nursing. It can also be a good foundation for those wanting to move on to an Access to Higher Education course.

Are you self-disciplined and enjoy using technology to help you learn? Our unique online delivery of GCSE English could be for you. Online tutorials, personal email tuition and videos will support your exploration of the English language. With no classroom based teaching, you will be required to demonstrate a strong starting point in your initial assessment. There is still a requirement to sit the formal assessments in college.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Functional Skills are a great way to build confidence, improve skills and give you essential English skills for everyday life and work. We have experienced tutors who can support you no matter what level you are already at. You may be a complete beginner or just want to refresh your memory and gain an up to date, nationally recognised, qualification. We can support you.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

On Functional English you can learn to write in different styles using different formats, brush up on your basics (spelling, grammar and punctuation), improve your reading skills and learn how to communicate confidently and effectively, both spoken and written. We provide opportunities to develop employability skills and ensure you feel as confident as you can with your literacy skills.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

You will complete tasks within your classes that will allow your tutor to assess your progress. You will have regular reviews with your tutor to discuss this. When you are confident and ready, you will complete an exam to gain your qualification.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On completion of the level 2 course you could apply for a vocational course, an Access course or GCSE English. The qualification at level 2 is accepted by most employers and education providers.

Paying for your course

PAYMENT PLAN

If you are paying for your course, the College can arrange for an upfront payment in full or set up a payment plan.

WHAT ARE THE LOAN OPTIONS? Advanced Learner Loan

If you are planning to study a level 3-6 further education course or Access to Higher Education programme and you are aged 19+ you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. Students can apply for a loan to meet the upfront costs of their qualification, which will be paid directly to the College on their behalf.

Repayments only start when earning an annual salary of £27,295* or more. If the loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you subsequently go on to successfully complete a higher education course you won’t have to pay back your Advanced Learner Loan.

Part-Time Student Finance

Part-time students undertaking designated higher education courses may be eligible to take out a yearly tuition fee loan from Student Finance England.

Your course will be free at the point of entry and you only make repayments if you are earning over £27,295* per year once you have completed your course.

The courses in this guide designated for tuition fees are First Degrees, Foundation Degrees and Higher National Certificates. The amount of fee loan a student can apply for cannot exceed the fee charged by the university.

Stockton Riverside College has a reputation as a creative environment, so studying the Level 3 Stage and Screen and progressing onto FdA Acting was a no brainer for me. During my FdA I have performed in 2 vocal concerts, a full length musical, 2 one act plays, a Shakespeare play and this year will be playing the lead role of Nell Gwynn in our end of year production. There are so many opportunities available for you to progress, and the amount of industry knowledge the tutors have, they really encourage you to achieve your full potential.

Next Steps...

Kate has chosen to continue her studies locally with our FdA Acting course. Whilst studying, Kate was invited to audition for a part in Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, receiving the part on the same day. Kate’s ultimate goal in future is to perform at the National Theatre!
