IT WASN’T SUCH A HARD DRIVE FOR CHRIS, WHO IS STUDYING HIS DREAM COURSE AT UNIVERSITY

Nam e: Chris Lives: Middlesbrough Aspiration: Work in the logistics industry

Course: Level 3 in IT

Why I chose SRC... There was a really good mix of practical and theory on the course and it gave me a good range of skills, which helped me keep my options open for when I entered university.

Next Steps... I can’t speak highly enough of the tutors. They were so supportive and they were always happy to answer any of my questions. I would absolutely, 100% recommend studying at Stockton Riverside College.

I would really love to work in the logistics industry, which is heavily dependent on a digital infrastructure, and would enable me to manage the indispensable equipment that helps run the organisation. Every day would be different; one day I’d be sat in an office and then the next day, I could be installing thousands of pounds worth of networking equipment on site.

BUILDING YOUR FUTURE CAREER READY LOGISTICS ACADEMY

Are you aware of the career opportunities that exist in the logistics industry? At Stockton Riverside College through our Career Ready Logistics Academy we work directly with employers to help raise awareness of this industry that is all around us yet often goes overlooked. Dealing with the planning, transport and storage of everything you see around you today, logistics is an essential part of all of our everyday lives. Working with Career Ready and industry leaders, our dedicated programme offers students the chance to learn more about the industry by taking part in master classes and site visits alongside their full-time course.

Emily, Career Re ady Graduate no w employed at PD Ports

I got to learn about the working environment at PD Ports and how everyone works together in a close knit team in the engineering department. I enjoyed being involved and seeing many of the projects taking place at PD Ports at the time, and engaging with a variety of different people.

Those taking part in the programme also get the chance to work with a mentor and carry out a placement or internship. By raising students’ awareness, the programme aims to encourage students to recognise the industry as a viable career option. And we are national award winners too! Our Career Ready Logistics Academy Coordinator, Ruth Cabourne, was winner of the Santander Employability Champion at the Career Ready 2019 Awards. IT student Chris was named the Career Ready Student of the Year 2020! Talk to us about how you can get involved.

Toni, Career Re ady student, Stockton Rivers ide College

Toni, who was a runner up in the Career Ready National Awards 2019, did an internship with PD Ports. She said working with a mentor along with the internship, gave her a real boost. Toni said: “Now I know that I would like to work in the sector. And, having worked with a mentor I would like to be able to do the same for someone else one day.

Recently, the Government has pledged £1.5 billion to protect the UK creative sector – we really are a world-class super power when it comes to the arts. APTA was launched to ensure that talented young people like you are well equipped to be part of this vibrant sector whether it’s in fashion, graphic design, TV and film or games design. APPRENTICESHIPS If you feel ready to start work then an apprenticeship could be the right move for you. You will learn on the job, gain a qualification and earn a wage. Sound good? We work with employers from a wide variety of industries with apprenticeship vacancies, so we can help you find the right opportunity. Apprenticeships last between one and four years.

WHAT WILL I DO?

We can advise on the available vacancies, and which one would suit you best. We work with local employers who are looking for an apprentice and can help guide you through the application process. If successful, you will start work and learn the skills of the job as you go. On some apprenticeships, you will spend one day a week at the College.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you are looking to start work straight away and prefer to learn in a working environment, then this could be the route for you. This is your opportunity to impress, so you will need to work hard, show dedication, determination and enthusiasm. You will gain work experience in an industry setting, whilst learning a qualification which can be used for UCAS points, should you wish to consider university in the future. Apprenticeships help provide you with the relevant work experience you need to find future jobs in your chosen area.

YOU NEED:

Entry requirements vary depending on the apprenticeship but all require that: • You are 16 or over • You live in England and are not taking part in full-time education • You may need to come into College one day a week if your apprenticeship is in a trade such as construction, hair or motor vehicle

ENGLISH AND MATHS

You will study functional skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved grade 9-4 at GCSE level. The grades you need vary depending on what level of apprenticeship you are studying. In some cases you will study ICT as part of your apprenticeship framework.

DID YOU KNOW?

The way apprenticeships work has changed and they now include an end point assessment. This assessment may include a professional discussion with an external assessor, an apprenticeship showcase (a bit like a portfolio), an observation in your workplace or a practical demonstration. Your assessor will let you know which applies to you.

WHAT ARE T LEVELS? T Levels are a new two-year course, being introduced by the government, primarily aimed at 16 to 19-year-old learners. The equivalent to three A levels, they are a level 3 technical option that combines classroom-based learning with a strong element of on-thejob training through a 45-day industry placement. T Levels have been developed in select subject areas, alongside employers and businesses to ensure they meet industry needs. The courses are being rolled out gradually to colleges and providers. The qualification is made up of two main parts, a technical qualification and an industry placement. Technical qualification: • Core content (knowledge and skills relevant to all occupations covered by the T Level). • An occupational specialism (the knowledge and practical skills to enter employment in a particular occupation). Industry placement: • Every T Level will include an industry placement with an employer, which will last a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) but can be longer.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A T LEVEL AND A LEVEL 3 VOCATIONAL COURSE T Levels are the technical equivalent to three A levels. They will cover core theory, concepts and specialist skills and knowledge for a specific career or occupation. The main difference between the T Level and a level 3 course is the compulsory industry placement. This will last a minimum of 315 hours and makes up 20% of the course. Academically demanding, T Levels incorporate English, maths and digital content.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A T LEVEL AND AN APPRENTICESHIP Apprenticeships are built for those who know what occupation they want to pursue and are ready to enter the world of work. They are typically made up of a combination of 80% on-the-job training and 20% in the classroom. T Levels have been developed in collaboration with employers and providers so that the content “meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work”. T Levels are based on the same industrial standards as apprenticeships, created specifically by employers and approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education. To find out more about the T Levels being delivered at Stockton Riverside College from September 2022 please email: info@stockton.ac.uk or call: 01642 865 566.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND DISABILITIES (SEND)/ EDUCATION HEALTH AND CARE PLAN (EHCP)

At Stockton Riverside College we are committed to supporting you to meet your individual goals and aspirations. We welcome applications from students with special educational needs (SEN), learning disabilities and/or other support needs. We will work with you to provide you with the right resources, support and services to meet your needs, achieve your outcomes and help you to prepare for adulthood. To ensure we can provide the appropriate level of support, we will ask to see a copy of your Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or SEN Support Plan. This allows us to understand your support needs and determine how best to meet your needs. We will work with you, your family, your current provider and any other professionals involved, to put in place a transition plan to help you settle into and adjust to college life. We work closely with the local authorities to adhere to the special educational needs and disabilities code of practice (SEND CoP) to meet the needs of our students. Support will include access to our dedicated Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) room.

TRANSITION INTO COLLEGE LIFE We can arrange taster sessions so you can experience a course session of your choice and decide if it is right for you. We can also provide support during your college interview. Transition sessions can be arranged to meet the course tutors, learning support staff and allow you to familiarise yourself with the building.
