Message received on 17/01/2021 from Klaradyn van Zyl – Daughter of Gen. JJJ van Vuuren, 4th Commissioner, South African Railways Police. I just want to thank my nephew, Jacques Olivier, as well as all the people involved in the creation of this excellent magazine, for their wonderful inputs and fond, precious memories of the Force! Looking forward to the next edition!
Railway Police Dog: J Wepener (Welkom) Hi Hennie & all. When we were in Worcester in the late 70's / early 80's we had friends, he was a Railway Policeman and his wife worked with John in the staff office. What I specifically recall was his German Shepherd police dog, named Bandit. After many years of "Railway Police Service" this dog retired and actually went on pension. He was given to his handler and was supplied with food and "medical aid" until the day of his passing. Even an exercise circuit was constructed in the backyard to keep him fit, on some occasions he would show his skills on various obstacles. regularly checked by the vet What a kind hearted loving dog he was towards us - and huge!! Must have scared the living crap out of the skollies on the Western Cape trains and stations!!
Groete.
No photos unfortunately – the handler was Isak “Sakkie” Horak, if memory serves correctly.
Dolf de Villiers.
Cheers.
Attached is a general photo of a SARP handler and his dog. Cheers. (Continued on page 214)
