Fifty years ago, in 1970 SAP Foxtrot Company our platoon doing border duty in the Caprivi at Bwabwata. As a selfappointed Medic, I treated a Bushman boy’s head burn wound. On Camp Duty (Author on the left)
To The Editor NONGQAI I grew up as a 5-year-old kid in 1951 paging through the SA Police Nongqai (Armed Watchman). I remember my father cutting out the Standing Order amendments to update the Standing Orders Book. I had cancer of the jawbone which was removed. On the 6 August 2017 while recovering and talking to the Doctor an artery burst In my mouth. In the theatre due to blood loss my heart stopped. He phoned a relative and told her that Some-One outside the theatre saved my life. I am forever thankful to Dr Price (Plastic surgeon) and medical staff. In 1970 fifty years ago while doing S A Police Border duty in the middle of the Caprivi strip at Bwabwata I treated a young Bushman boy. He had a burn wound at the back of his head that had a crust of hard dung covering the wound.
I applied paraffin gaze and on the 3rd day the soften dung was removed. For two weeks the wound was treated daily with paraffin gaze until healed. See attached photos. Response: Amazing! Blast from the past. Great work. It must seem like another time now. South Africa’s finest in the Caprivi. Have a blessed Christmas and all the very best for the New Year.
