Solcrncr Becrch Ycrrd Builds Model House crf Fqir

The Solana Lumber & Ruilders Supply Company, Solarra Beach. Calif., erected the handsome model home front. showrr above, on the fairgrounds at Del Mar racetrack for the Southerr.r California Exposition and San Diego County Fair which closecl July 5.

It was the only exhibit by any lumberyard at the big fair and marks the fifth year that the Solana yard has successfully usecl such an advertising display. "It brings us in lots of new business," said Hershel Larrick, Jr., who is associated in the Lumber & Builders Supply Cornpany with his father, H. G. Larrick, Sr.

The only cost of the exl-ribit to the yard was in the materials used. 'fhe Fair itself furnishes the labor and the setting is landscaped by local architects in competition. The lumberyard gets the use of the setting on the fairgrounds for a space of four years.

Unired Lumber Yords Buys Merced Lumber Compony

John Martin of Modesto, California, president of the Unitecl Lumber Cornpany, before leaving for a six-week tour of Europe, made a very important announcement. United has closed a deal for the purchase of the Merced Lumber Company, with yards located in Merced, Le Grand, Atwater and Livingston, for about $400,000. This gives United a total of 26 yards in the San Joaquin Valley.

With regard to personnel changes, Mr. Martin states that the newly acquired yards have come under the management of J. E. Webb, general manager of United, and that Al Corrigan, former United manager at Oakdale, is now manager at Merced. Bill Crews will continue as manager of the Atwater yard, Manuel Fariea with the Livingston yard, and Oscar Oswalt with the Le Grand yard.

\Aralter Found, former manager of the Merced Lumber Company, retires.

The 1954 model home front was constructed mainly of ceclar. X{r. Larrick said it was more elaborate than anything the 1'ard had put up in previous years. It was the only modernistic exhibit at the fair. "It has attractecl lots of comment -pro and con," said tl-re young lumberman.

The photos show some of the modernistic construction details. An inset panel near the front door showecl constantly changing color slides which featured building with cedar. In addition, a "Take One" box on a railing around the plot contained free literature, "You Can FIave a Cedar Home," with the imprint of the Lumber & Ruilders Supply Co., and illustrated interior use of cedar in exposed beam ceilings, paneled rvalls, cabinets, etc. The pamphlet on Solana Brand Cedar was so popular with the fairgoers that the box had to be replenished several times daily.

TATEST LUMBER STRIKE NEWS

As this is written, July 10th, here is the West Coast lumber strike situation, little changed from ten days ago: No break in the Fir situation, about 85 per cent of the procluction down, amounting to about one-third of all softwood produced nationally. Negotiations between unions and mills started July Bth, no report to date; changes may come soon, or not for weeks. In the meantirne, stocks of Fir lumber get shorter every day, and prices advance u'ith scarcity in all reporting regions.

Practically all the production of softwood plywood in Washington, Oregon, and California reported down. Reports show manufacturers of plywood glue also heavily curtailing. All markets that hinge on Western lumber and plywood heavily affected.

About a dozen Western Pine mills have been struck, sympathetically. I-atest reports from Portland say general strike mn.1 sxtend at any timc to mills generally.

Situation may change quickly, or continue for some time. There are reports of a number of mills trying to conduct operations in face of the strike.

California Redwood, from various non-union mills, continues in considerable oroduction.

"Take LIFE as though it was-as it IS-an earnest, vital, and imnortant affair. Take it as though you were born to the task of performing a merry part of it-as though the world awaited your coming. Take it as though it were a grand opportunity to do and achieve, to carry forward great and good schemes, to help and cheer a suffering, weary, it may be a broken-hearted, brother. Now and then a man stands aside from the crowd, labors earnestly, steadfastly, confidently, and straightaway becomes famous for wisdom, intellect, skill, greatness of some sort. The world wonders, admires, idolizes, and it only illustrates what others may do, if they, take hold of life with a purpose. The miracle, or the power, that elevates the few, is to be found in their industry, application, and perseverance under the promptings of a brave, determined spirit."-Mark Twain.

And Col. R. G. Inger""r, *r.,., "Justice is the only worship. Love is the only priest. Ignorance is the only slavery. Happiness is the only good. The time to be happy is now. The place to be happy is here. The way to be happy is to make other people happy."

A splendid philosophy r, ;;a belonged to that gifted and courageous American explorer; Captain Meriwether Lewis. Captain Lewis was the man who more than 150 years ago led the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition on its journey of exploration from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. In discussing the rigors and unknown hazards they had to face in that first great trek to Oregon, he explained his philosophy thus: "As I have always held it to be a crime to anticipate evils, I will believe it to be a good and comfortable road until I am compelled to believe differently."

on the subject ", n"n;.:.,'*" ',r.r, popular television star recently got a lot of newspaper publicity by a short discussion of that subject. FIe was asked if television comedians are happy people themselves, and he is reported to have replied: "I don't know any happy people. How could people be happy in the kind of world we are living in?" Then along came one of the big radio commentators, and called attention to the fact that the above quotation was a famous one bv a thinker of earlier days. However, the fact that the words fit the situation seems to be the important thing.

Victor Hugo wrot. ' ";"J is neither the master of his

life nor of his fate. He can but offer to his fellow man his efforts to diminish human suffering; he can but offer to his God his indomitable faith in human libertv."

Ralph waldo Emerson :rr:..I ""o. is not so short but that there is always time for courtesy." There is more need for thissage philosophy now than when he wrote it, before the motor car was invented. The auto has changed countless people into selfish boors. If drivers behaved as considerately when behind the wheel as they do in their homes, the death rate in traffic would be sliced to a minimum. A great need of the hour is better manners, more courtesy, and more sportsmanship on the road.

There is nothing ".- ;r;. ln. ".rr,. plutarch tells us that the great Athenian statesman, Pericles, so great a man that posterity named the Age of Pericles after him, "finding himself short of his competitor in wealth and money turned to the distribution of the public monies allowed for shows and service on juries, and what with other forms of pay and largesse (subsidies) he made use of them against the council of Areopagus (the Supreme Court of that d.y)." And in a later paragraph, Plutarch says that "a great corruption and flood of mischief and vice followed."

History amply testifies .J ; matter how ridiculous a philosophy may be, if its sponsor believes in it with his whole soul, he will not only make converts but will often awaken a- fierce enthusiasm, even an unreasoning fanaticism, which assumes the absurd to be self-evident because the founder said it. It was thus that John Krok transformed hospitable Caladonia into a nest of canting and intolerant Covenanters, and Mahomet changed the easy-going Arabians into a horde of murdering bigots. In the pathway of a Peter-the-Hermit on crusade, everything inflammable catches fire, and once aflame, argument and reasoning are useless. The fame must run its course. Study world history for just the last generation, and discover how true this is.

In the days of ancient Rome, it is said that sculptorswho were in abundanqs-sqrnglirnes made a fast dollar by putting wax noses on their statues, thus finishing them quickly. The hoax was rarely discovered unless the unwary buyer exposed the statue to the hot sun. Then the nose melted. So the buyers of statues in Rome insisted that sculptors make their statues with noses "5ingg111s"-6sgn-

Winston Churchill's speech after Dunkirk: '.We shall not flag nor fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France and on the seas and oceans; we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be; we shall fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets, and on the hills. We shall never surrender and even if, which I do not for the moment believe, this island, or a large part of it, were subjugated and starving, then our empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British fleet, will carry on the struggle until in God's good time the New World, with all its power and might, sets forth to the liberation and rescue of the old."

Grand Old Churchill h"" O*" *an us here in the United States recently, fighting under new conditions not dreamed of when he made the Dunkirk speech quoted above, yet fighting with every ounce of his brain and body for that one thing he loves above all things-Britain. What a patriot! In lighter vein it could be said of the 79-year old

Briton what O. Henry once wrote about one of his heroes. He said: "He has gone to and fro in this world, walked up and down in it, and enjoyed it."*

And, since this piece is thus far made up chiefly of scrapbook items, why not finish with some others that may be missing in YOUR scrapbook? Edmund Burke, another great British orator, said to the British House of Commons in 1775: "America, gentlemen say, is a noble object. It is an object well worth fighting for. Certainly it is, if fighting a people be the best way of gaining them. Gentlemen in this respect will be led to their choice of means by their complexions and their habits. Those who understand the military art will, of course, have some predilection for it. Those who wield the thunder of the state may have more confidence in the efficacy of arms. But I confess my opinion is much more in favor of prudent management than of force. I do not choose to wholly break the American spirit, because it is the spirit that has made the country."

Remember when you ;rJ. lia, "r,a listened with distended eyes and flesh alive with goosepimples, while some future orator thundered the words of "Spartacus to the Gladiators?" Here are those lines, written by one Elijah Kellogg: "If ye are beasts, then stand here like fat oxen, waiting for the butcher's knife ! If ye are men-follow me ! Strike down yon guard, gain the mountain passes, and there do bloody work, as did your sires at old Thermoplyae ! Is Sparta dead? Is the old Grecian spirit frozen in your veins that you do crouch and cower like a belabored hound beneath his master's lash? O comrades! Warriors! Thracians ! If we must fight, let us fight for ourselves ! ff we must slaughter, let us slaughter our oppressors ! If we must die, let it be under the clear sky, by the bright waters, in noble. honorable battle !"

Hughes Fomily Hove Been Lumber Mokers for 54 yeqrs

The old adage, "In unity there is strength," has held true in the case of the Hughes Brothers lumber operation, located at Foresthill, Calif., twenty-three miles from Auburn, county seat of Placer County. This fine lumbering operation is owned and operated by a unique partnership of five brothers and one sister, all of whom are active in the management and operation of this thriving industry, and their mother, who is no longer active in the business.

The company was begun in 1900 by William H. Hughes, Sr., father of the present partners, in New Mexico. He died in 1926 and the business was carried on by his wife and the older of the eight children, with each child becoming active and interested as he was old enough until all eight were members of the partnership.

Of the eight, six yet remain active; one sister, Mrs. Nellie Grant, married and withdrew her interest, and one brother, Ted, passed away in 1950. The mother of the partners, Mrs. Kate D. Hughes, resides in Foresthill. The present partners are William, Brian, Ivan, Joe and David Hughes, and Mrs. Winifred Akins. Each is outstanding in his particular part of the business.

The company was begun and operated in New Mexico until 1942, when the need for expansion was felt and the present location in Foresthill was decided upon. The effrcient and

modern bandmill is located seven and one-half miles from Foresthill, and the dry yard, planing mill and main office is located in Foresthill.

Hughes Brothers at present employs about 125 men in their lumber operation. Their methods and forestry practice have brought them a high reputation for honesty and integrity.

Long-Bell Tokes Option on M ond M Plywood Plont

Longviern', \\rash.-The Long-Bell Lumber Company announces that it has taken an option to buy the plywood plant of the M and M Wood Working Company, which is located on Long-Bell property here. M and M's leasehold on the property expired at midnight June 30 and the company issued dismissal notices to 300 workers.

M and M had planned last spring to dismantle the plant and temporarily indicated it would let the workers go in April but the plant ,continued operations through June after Long-Bell made a purchase offer.

J. D. Leland, president of Long-Bell, said that if the option is exercised in the future the company rvill modernize and reopen the plywood unit.

Do-lt-Yourself Spreads Wlld|y

The "do-it-yourself" idea continues to spread like a prairie fire in a high wind.

It has proved to be as contagious as the spirit of holiness at a meeting of Holy Rollers.

It has rallied frcm the hillside and gathered from the plains.

It has caught the popular fancy like nothing else since someone long ago invented kissing.

A board and a nail and a saw and a can of paint may soon be built into a coat-of-arms for national use.

The old song, "Everybody's Doing It," may become the national anthem of the build-repair-and remodel movement.

No town or hamlet is safe from the insidious contagion. Millions of men and women are devoting their spare time to building and fixing around their homes.

This is one national campaign where the ladies are as interested as the men.

Do-ll'Yourself Kirchen ldeos Developed by Plywood Mokers

As part of a continuing effort to help retail lumber dealers sell rnore fir plywood, plans for a thoroughly mo<lern series of "do-it-yourself" kitchen work centers have been developeci by western fir plywoocl manufacturers.

There are 14 new plans in ail, each one carefully designecl to satisfy the modern housewife's growing need for more built-in kitchen and utility room storage and work facilities' Ancl the designs have been simplified to appeal instantly to even the most amateur of home handvmen.

The 14 plans are a source of nearly 30 separate ideas for improving the home kitchen. Such units as range counter, oven utensil an<l har-rging dish cabinets, plus a sliding spice rack, recipe file, telephone desk, utility closet and cleaning cart are but a few of the manv do-it-vourself ideas included in 1he olans.

Awqrds to Two Cqlifornio Ysrds

Two California lumberyards woll awards in the 1954 Public Relations contest of the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association, Everett B. Wilson, public relations director, announced June 30. No California yard won one of the national awards for outstanding achievement.

The two yards which won state awards here were the Chandler l-umber Company, North Hollywood, and the Thompson Lumber Co., Ltd., San Bernardino. Certificates have been sent to the managing officers of their regional association and they will'be presented to the dealers on behalf of the NRLDA.

Remcrnufqcfures for Three Mills

A new firm, the Consolidated Nlilling Company, is operating the remanufacturing plant of the Douglas Manufacturing Company, near Roseburg, C)re., and preparing for market the green lumber from three sawmills in Douglas County' Marlin Holm is president of the new companY, and the milling concerns are Holm Brothers, at Glide, the Cleveland Lumber Company, at Camas Valley, and the Lloyd Gilbert Lumber Company, at Susan Creek.

An Edltorial

The average woman is pretty clumsy with a hammer and a saw, but she can give a paint brush holy hades.

And how she loves that job ! She might kick like a mule if she messed up her clothing and anatomy in any other fashion, but with a paint brush and a can of green or white-she revels in it.

That's why uncounted millions of dollars will be spent this year for "do-it-yourself" supplies.

A board or a sheet of plywood are raw materials for a million building things.

Yes sir, a nail and a board and a saw and a can of paint make millions of places look new that ain't. And what's more, it's fun.

Lumber yards by the tens of thousands are working hand in fist with this so very practical craze. ,Long may it wave !

Shorv l'roducer Ted l3entley says that, due to a huge stimulant received from the surging do-it-yourself market' the u,allpapering and painting fields have unclergone a rrast change the past tvuo years. It is reported that ntore than 75 per cent of all interior paint sold is applied to the do-ityourself field, rvith Southern California coming in for a large percentage of this flgure. In rvallpapering, the trend is almost as great, being about 6O per cent to the do-ityourself market.

Probably the greatest incentive in the paint field has been the marketing of such devices as paint rollers and othcr forms of easy-to-apply applicators. Several novel applicators v,'ill be on display at the shou', Bentley said.

Chicago-Furniture sales r.r,ill probably reach near-record levels in 1954 but manufacturers and retailers face a sharp drop in profits, it r.r'as agreed by members of the industry at the International Home Furnishings Shon' here the end of June. Forest Fire Prevention Drive Brought Less Loss in | 953

Forest fire prevention campaigns paid off last year with an 18 per cent decrease from 1952 in the number of forest fires, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. This record is outstanding, according to Richard E. McArdle, chief of the Forest Service, in view of the extremg drought in manv forest areas last year.

Forest Service fielcl offices, state foresters, the Soil Conservation Service, the Department of the Interior and the Tennessee Valley Authority reported a total of 154,16C forest fires ciuring 1953-the lowest number since 1946, when there were wartime restrictions on travel. This is much lower than the 210,000 average for the five years before the present state and federal cooperative forest fire prevention carnpaign began.

Featuring Smokey the Bear, this campaign has been featurecl by public service advertising time and space clonated by American business and industry through the Advertising C.runcil. 1-his advertising was valuecl at $7,000.000 in 1953.

'fhis campaign and the Keep Green forums, lvhich are sponsored by the states in cooperation with the timber industries, have made people increasingly aware of the neecl for forest fire prevention. Through public cooperation, mancaused fires have decreased-|4l,632 in 1953 as compared to 180,265 ]n 1952.

Policing of Unions ls Sttrte Power

Editorializing on the recent Supreme Court decision which upheld a Virginia state court ruling that a union charged with violence during a labor controversy can be sued in a state court rather than being prosecuted under the Taft-Hartley law, the 14,-oll Street Journal said:

"The high court said nothing in the T-H law deprives states of their 'inherent police power' to deal with local controversies. To the layman this will seem only common sense. A local government which did not have the power to maintain order in its own community would not be a government at all. And if it had to run to Washington every time there was a brawl, there would soon not be much local order.

". For years there has been a determined effort to give unions a sort of privileged status in relation to local law, to argue that a labor controversy was immune to the rules of other controversies and that the unions were beyoncl the reach of the local policeman. Much of the labor violence of recent years has been possible only under the sway of that doctrine . The Supreme Court decision'should do much to restore the power of state governments to manage their own affairs."

Georgio-Pocific Completes Big Timber Deol in Norrhwest

New York City-Georgia-Pacific Plywoocl Company completed on June 30 the purchase of valuable old-growth timber stands in Oregon, adjacent to one of its other large timber operations, in a deal involving more than $12,000,000, it was announced here by Owen R. Cheatham, Georgia-Pacific president. Georgia-Pacific acquired all the stock of Inman-Poulsen Lumber Company, Western Logging Company and Saginaw Timber Company, all of Portland, and what is known as the Grand Rapids Timber Tract.

In the $12,000,000 transaction, the liquidation of current assets from the acquired companies returned approximately $6,000,000 to Georgia-Pacific. "This gave us the timber, plus timberlands, roads and logging equipment, at a price of about $16 per thousand board feet of old-growth timber," the president pointed out, "as compared with similar timber selling in the open market from $25 to $50 per thousand feet."

This new purchase, coupled with the timber the company has in the area, will give Georgia-Pacific an almost unlimited supply of raw material from which to make veneer to feed its other plywood plants in the Northwest, in addition to the large lumber and plyw-ood plants at Toledo, Ore.

Tentqtive Progrqm for Hoo-Hoo Houston Annuql

Houston, Texas-This year all Hoo-Hoo eyes are on Texas. That is, Houston, Texas, where the 63rd annual Hoo-Hoo convention will be held September 6-7-8-9, at the Shamrock Hotel. Houston Hoo-Hoo Club No. 23 will be the immediate active host. All nine Texas Hoo-Hoo clubs, however, are joining with Houston to welcome and extend true Texas hospitality to the delegates and members attending the convention.

Convention committees, headed by General Chairman W. A. "Bill" Russell, 50220, have been working all year preparing a rousing welcome and gala program. W. C. "Bill" Whitridge, 53966, chairman of reservation and registration, already is busily recording advance commitments. He points out that members should send in formal registrations together with hotel reservations because convention badges will be personaliz.ed and prepared in advance to be on hand upon arrival.

Although the convention opens formally on Tuesday, September 7, there will be an informal welcome party on Mondav a.fternoon, the 6th. This is described as a round-up party. Busses will take the members to the Detering estate, where there will be an outdoor show by the sheriff's mounted police of ,Houston County, followed by a barbecue dinner and an informal dance with music by Papa Celestius, original dixieland band, through the courtesy of the Texas Lumber Nlanufacturers Association.

Chairman Russell advises that something new has been added. Early reservations indicate that a large number will check in on Sunday, September 5th. For those, the commit-

tee has provided an "Early Bird" cocktail party for Sunday afternoon.

For the convention outing d^y, Wednesday afternoon, September 8, members will enjoy a dutch luncheon at the Grand Prize Brewery, and then will meet the ladies for a yacht trip down Houston ship channel to the San Jacinto Rattle-grounds and will visit the San Jacinto Monument and the battleship Texas. Dinner at the San Jacinto Inn will follow.

A gala convention dinner dance at the Houston Club, Thurstlay, September 9, will mark the end of festivities, "Hasta Ia Vista".

The business sessions will be devoted primarily to the business of Hoo-Hoo. In addition to the address of Snark of the lJniverse John B. Egan, 45206, national, regional and local club ofificers will be heard. Convention committees on administration, legislation, resolutions and nominations will report. The election of the Snark of the Universe and the Supreme Nine for the Hoo-Hoo year 1954-55 will climax the business meetings. The convention concat is always a feature. From Texas comes the report that the degree teams in charge of the concat are hard at work preparing a ceremony that will be most impressive not only to the "kittens" but also to the clelegates. The concat is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, September 7. After the concat, the ladies will join the men at a buffet dinner and water show-Terrace of Shamrock Pool.

There will be no outside speakers at the general sessions. Prominent speakers lvill address the two luncheon sessions, (Please Turn to Next Page)

Beniomin Frqnklin

Ben Franklin said, "Time Is Money," but he meant when time is employed at some worthwhile work. Ben was the most useful and practical man this nation has ever produced. He was a great scientist, a great linguist, a great diplomat, a famous swimmer, a great philosopher, a great patriot, a great businessman, a great citizen. He went to France and borrowed the money that Washington needed to win the Revolutionary war. He built the first cookstove, invented the first spectacles, founded the University of Pennsylvania, founded the first public library, harnessed the lightning in a modest way, and became the richest man of his day and generation. He was the one great printer of his time.

Ben Franklin worshipped two gods here on earth-work and thrift. lle was the greatest preacher, teacher, and practicer of thrift this nation has ever known. He believed that from thrift all good things come, and that few good things come without it. With regard to religion, this great thinker had the simplest of beliefs. He said he believed that the Power that made him and put him here and cared for him here was well able to care for hirn wherever he was going when he left here, and he did not propose to worry on the matter.

Mony Moslems

The largest Moslem country in the world is Indonesia. More than 90 per cent of its population of 83,000,000 is of that faith. Pakistan is next, with some 64 million Moslems out of a total population of 78 million.

The Gift We Mcrke

You gave him gold? Well, what of that? You left him still in need. A kindly word, a friendly smile, Had been a better deed.

His Best

A man who stuttered went to a doctor to see if anything could be done about curing him of the habit. The doctor gave him a lot of aplitude and other tests, and finally told him:

"I think I could cure you, but don't believe it would be wise. You see, the only thing that yo.u do well, is stutter."

The Meoning?

An innocent traveling salesman wants to know what is meant by a sign he says he saw posted at the entrance to an attractive glen in a park, that read-"NO PARKIN' OR NOTHIN'.''

Finding God

The little lonely souls go by, Seeking their God who lives on high, With conscious step and hat and all, As if on Him they meant to call, In some sad ceremonial. But I, who am a pagan child, Who knows how dying Plato smiled, And how Confucius lessoned Kings, And of the Buddha's wanderings, Find God in very usual things.

The Need of Americo

The need of America is not for men who can lift blocks of marble to the fortieth story of some great building, but for men who will lift the level of character-not men who dot the seas with the while sails of commerce, but for the men who in their everyday living exemplify those homely virtues, those old-fashioned verities, which in the last analysis alone can bring happiness into the life of the individual, or build perpetuity in our civilization. The time has come when we must understand. as never before that there is an everlasting difference between making a living and making a life. Life is not a goblet to be drained; it is a cup to be filled. The great need of America today is not for men who will add to the quantity of our materials, but men who will add to the quality of our living.-Dr. W. W. Youngston.

"Oh, Nof!"

A Filipino school teacher in the Islands wrote a letter of resignation to the white superintendent, that read:

"I wish to resignate. My works are too many, and my salaries are too few. Moreover, my principal makes many lovings to me, to which I say 'Oh, Not !' "

Sociql Securiry

Consider the cow, with her poise and urbanity, Doing her share of the world of humanity; Her bed and her board and her background of scenery, Supplied by adjacent and succulent greenery. The cow may regard with the utmost passivity, Methods and plans to control productivity. Her function is one of complete spontaniety, Ruled by a kind and beneficent Deity. Having no duties beyond her ability, Hers is a world of utmost stability. Cared for by others from birth to maturity, A perfect example of social security.

Assets to Ashes, Dollors to Dust The RFC by Gongress Is 'Busl'

At midnight June 30, the Reconstruction Finance Corp., the once-powerful government lending agency, became a part of the Treasury department by Congressoinal order. The fallen giant is not dead, but dying, and will spend its last hours cleaning up its obligations after 22 years of often stormy controversv.

It might take several years and there is always the possibility, as long as the RFC remains a corporate body, o{ a reprieve in the form of a wartime emerge'ncy, but it seems more likely that government lending to business will be handled by the Small Business Administration, which was set up as the RFC's successor last year. The SBA has a loan limit of $150,000, as compared to one loan of $111 million which the RFC once granted to Kaiser Steel Co.

The RFC came into being in the last days of the Hoover administration. At its height in World War II, it had 11 subsidiaries. As a lending agency, it dispensed $12.3 billion and, by its o\rrn accounting, claims a $540 million "profit." In the business the RFC takes along to Treasury Secretary Humphrey might be loans and odds and ends of from $261 million to $537 million.

The Treasury also inherits some businesses over u'hich it rvill have to watch until they are sold to private industry. Other agencies rvhich 'ivill get RFC "bequests" include the Federal National N[ortgage Association, which u'i1l get $64 million of home mortgages partially guaranteed by the VA, and the Housing and Flome Finance Agency, rvhich u'ill get $42 million of apartment project mortgages.

And in those days, behold there came through the gates of the city a Hardwood Salesman from afar off, and it came to pass as the day went by he booked plenty.

And in that city were they who waited for business to come their way and they spent their days in adding to the alibi sheets. Mightily were they astonished. They said one to the other, "What the hell; how doth he getteth away with it?" And it came to pass that many were gathered in the back ofEce and a soothsayer came among them. And he was one wise guy. And they spoke and questioned him saying, "How is it that this stranger accomplished the impossible ?"

'Whereupon the soothsayer made answer: "He of whom you speak is one hustler. He ariseth very early in the morning and goeth forth full of pep. He complaineth not, neither doth he know despair. He is arrayed- in purple and fine linen, while ye go forth with pants unpressed.

"\fhile ye gather here and say one to the other, 'Verily this is a terrible day to work,' he is already abroad. And when the eleventh hour cometh. he needeth no alibis. He knoweth his business and they that would stave him off, they give him orders. Men say unto him 'nay' when he cometh in, yet when he goeth forth he hath their names on the line that is dotted.

"He taketh with him the two angels 'inspiration' and 'perspiration' and worketh to beat hell. Verily I say unto you, go and do likewise."

Fred Bronch Fomily Cruising Six Weeks Under Own Power

Fred Rrar.rch of the Pacific Hardwoocl Sales Co.. ()akland. the Brancll family anrl a group of their friends left the East Ray recently for a six-week vacation. The first stop for the party was at Algonac, Michigan, where on Jtrly l2th, they took delivery of a brand-new, 45-foot Corsair.

The party will spend the next six weeks cruising the Great Lakes ar.rd Canada as far as Quebec, where Mr. Branch plans to visit several of his suppliers in that area. The itinerary for the return trip will take the party dou.n the Richelieu River, through Lake Champlain, and on down the Hudson River to New York, 'lvhere they plan to spend several days. They will then travel out to sea, around Sancly Hook to Cape May, through Delaware Bay ancl the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, an<l on into Chesapeake l3ay.

After cruising Chesapeake Bay, the Corsair will heacl for Norfolk, Va., where it will get a ride to the west coast via special steamer. The Rranch party r,l'ill then return to California by plane.

F'red Branch has for many years been connected with yachting activities in the l3ay area an<l currently is treasurer and a flag officer of the Oakland Yacht Club. Consequently, it is only natural that the Pacific Hardwood Sales Co. would cater to the requirements of the boat-building industry and specialize in mahogany lun-rber and marine plywood. Mr. Branch has also spent considerable time in Central America anr1, after Worlcl \\'ar II, was the first to bring a shiprnent of rnahogany lumber into the rvest coast for the then n-rahogany-hungry boat building industry.

Horn' the state of California is planning to insure iuture water supplies and rvhat foresters are doing to protect today's suppiies in the central Sierra Nevada were the subjects featured at this year's spring fieid meeting of the Northern California Section, Society of American Foresters, reports Clyde Walker, editor, Northern California Section, Society of American Foresters.

Some 130 foresters gathered at Shaver Lake, about 60 miles northeast of Fresno, {or the two-day meeting. Friday, June 4, was highlighted by a dinner meeting at which Medill Thiebaud, hydraulic engineer in the State Division of Water Resources, described studies being made to develop a state-wide water plan. June 5 featured a field trip to inspect forestry practices and erosion control measures on lands of the Southern California Edison Company and the Sierra National Forest.

California has plenty of water, said Mr. Thiebaud, but not in the right places. Two-thirds of the annual runofi

is from streams in the northern third of the state. Consequently, one of the main problems is to transport water to drier parts of the state, as by the proposed Feather River project. Another problem is to develop methods of using underground basins for storage of excess runoff. Most of the good surface reservoir sites are already taken, Thiebaud said, but ground water basins provide an ad-

ditional means of regulating water supplies. He pointed out that whereas Shasta Dam provides storage space for 4.5 million acre feet of r,vater, the underground basins of San Joaquin Valley alone can store more than 90 million acre feet.

Thiebaud praised foresters' efforts to protect stream flow through wise land use, and said engineers were especially inlslssted in proposals for research in ways to retard melting of the Sierra Nevada 5ns1y p?ck through speciall)designed forest practices.

Several practices designed to protect water supplies in the Shaver Lake area were seen on the June 5 field trip. Plans of the Southern California Edison Company for improvement of company-owned watershed lands were outlined by H. L. Moore, manager of the company's right of ivay and land department, and by K. D. Henze, consulting forester of the firm of Mason, Bruce and Girard.

Thinnings made to improve the growth of Sugar Pine trees and plantings of Ponderosa Pine seedlings in cleared brushfields were shown to visiting foresters by Bill Wingo, resident forester for the power company. .Use of a tractormounted chipper to chew up logging slash and spread a

protective mulch on bare skid trails was demonstrated by national forest workers; this practice reduces 'fire hazard. and helps control erosion.

Other stops on the field trip included a six-year-old pine plantation in an area wiped out by forest fire in 1947, and the Dinkey Creek sarvmill of Byles-Jamison.

At the sawmill, Al Hildman, chairman of the Forest Conservation Committee of the Western Pine Association, rvelcomed Southern California Edison Company into the Tree Farm family. He commended the company's faith in long-range forestrl-. In accepting the Tree Farm certificate, J. F. Davenport, vice-president of Southern California Edison, declared, "We want to make this a model tree farm for the state, and the key to success is continued cooperation with the Forest Service, the California Division of Forestry, county agencies, and the Byles-Jamison Company."

John Callaghan, deputy state forester at Redding and chairman of the Northern California professional foresters, was general chairman of the meeting. Cecil E. Metcalf, deputy state forester at Fresno, was in charge of local arrangements for the meeting.

Puget Sound Plywood Compony Storts New Pockoging Method

Puget Sound Pl1'r'vood, Inc., Tacoma, Wash., has instituted an effective protective measure to make certain that shipments of fir plyrvood reach distributors in the best possible condition. The new packaging inethod will inclucle a /a-inch A-D panel placed face in on both top and bottom of each skiclload of A-A and A-B panels. This r,r,ill eliminate, as much as possible, fork loading marks or dam:rge on panel shipn.rents.

The protective service is optional and the /4" panels n'ill be added to invoices for distributors requesting it. The company asks that distributors not \\,anting the service indicate this on their new orders.
