Unlike a traditional scholarship that is generally awarded before tuition is due, Economic and Workforce Development scholarships are awarded as reimbursements after tuition is paid.

CFCC’s Academic and Career Readiness Department can help you meet your goals! Classes are offered at all CFCC campuses and at off-campus locations throughout New Hanover and Pender counties, as well as online.

ADULT HIGH SCHOOL (AHS)

This is a traditional evening and online high school program that meets at the downtown Wilmington Campus. Students complete the 22 credits required for a North Carolina high school diploma. Credit may be awarded for courses completed at the student’s original high school. Registration and orientation sessions are held regularly at the Wilmington campus. Returning students, call for registration information. Classes operate year-round.

We offer a variety of traditional and online courses to help prepare students to take the official GED® Test.

These classes are offered morning and evening at all CFCC campuses and also at off-campus locations. Test prep is taught in the four subject areas: math, reasoning through language arts, social studies, and science. Eligible

students attending classes receive the GED® Ready test for free (a $24 value). Scholarships are also available for eligible students for the official GED® Test ($20-$80 depending on the award). Registration and orientation sessions are held twice a month at the Wilmington campus.

Improving your English language skills can help you get a better job, participate more in your community, finish high school, and earn a college degree. The Essentials Program offers free Academic and Career Readiness classes to those who function academically at or below the 8th grade level and who wish to improve their reading, writing, math, and computer literacy skills. Our two-year program allows students the chance to enroll in multiple career pathways. Career pathways classes serve to introduce potential career opportunities and earn students a Continuing Education certificate upon completion. Pathway classes have fees associated.

This course is designed to teach students basic employability skills. Course work includes discussion of abilities, skills, and accomplishments. Resume writing, interviewing techniques, professional workplace writing, working with different personality types are covered. This course is designed to provide employability skills training to function professionally and confidently in an entrylevel medical receptionist position. Students will have familiarity with medical terms and tools, insurance, medical office practices and procedures, and the business and communication skills needed to succeed. 911 TELECOMMUNICATOR

This course is designed to provide employability skills training and career exploration for the role of 911

Telecommunicator within the Emergency Management and 911 Communication Department in New Hanover County Government. Students will receive training in Emergency Dispatcher roles, 911 example calls, HIPAA information, terminology, and basic listening for understanding lessons. Upon successful completion of this class and meeting all course requirements, students will be given the opportunity to take the CritiCall test and will be guaranteed at least one job interview .

This course is designed to assist students with their job seeking using current technology through the use of computers and smartphones. INCOME MAINTENANCE CASEWORKER – NC FAST (PREREQUISITE- HUMAN SERVICES EXPLORATION)

This course is designed to cover a variety of skills associated with the Income Maintenance Caseworker role to determine service eligibility. Specific focus will include proficiency in the utilization of the NCFAST application. Other topics will include skills in communication, interviewing, time management, data gathering/ compiling, and data analysis. This class is not fee waived. 48 hours

This course is designed to assist individuals with determining their goals and interests in an effort to reach successful employment. Class topics include goal setting, employability skills, success networks, and educational opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to create

This course will prepare students for entry level positions at hotels, restaurants, and resorts. CAREER EXPLORATION: CORRECTIONS OFFICER

This course covers skills and strategies designed to provide employability skills training and career exploration for positions within the Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice (DACJJ) of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS). Students will be trained via the Corrections Pre-Employment Training (CPET) modules and program management guidelines approved by NCDPS.

MEDICAL BILLING VS MEDICAL CODING

Medical billing and medical coding are often confused as the same profession because both require similar skill sets and employ similar kinds of tasks, but they are very different career options. Both the professions represent the administrative & financial side of the healthcare industry, but there are some stark differences between the two professions.

Both the jobs deal with the medical records of the patients, but the medical coders review the patient’s records and assign proper codes based on the information provided by the medical staff. Medical billers then use specialized software, into which all the medical codes are entered. Coders and billers work behind the scenes at clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and pharmacies, so that the insurance company is properly billed.

Coders hardly interact with the patients during their careers, but have to regularly communicate with the healthcare providers. Coders should be able to apply approximately 144,000 different codes which they will communicate to the medical biller. Medical coders are high on the technical side, where the coder is required to have medical knowledge, including that of anatomy and medical terminology.

A medical biller audits, processes, submits and follows up on claims with health insurance companies in order to receive payments for the services given by the healthcare provider. Medical billers have to interact more with patients, medical staff and Insurance company staff. The biller will have to interact with the medical coder as well if needed. A biller has to make sure that a proper reimbursement is received from the Insurance Company.

A biller needs to understand medical insurance, claims process, the appeals process and the impact on the practice’s revenue to successfully be able to optimize revenue performance. When the claims are submitted to the insurance company, it is the responsibility of the billers to verify the correct billing format, assign the proper modifiers and submit the required documentation with each claim.

Medical billers are responsible for correct billing, for which they communicate with patients and their health insurance companies professionally. They keep all the invoices organized and ensure payment is done in a timely manner. They are well versed with the coding language and are familiar with deciphering an assortment of medical invoices. On the other hand, medical coders do not work either with the insurance companies or the patients directly. Coders interpret medical records and capture proper codes. Note that every action taken in a medical office has a corresponding code making the work of coders very critical.

However, it is the obligation of both billers and coders to explain the charges and breakup of the bill, especially when the patients need to understand their payment obligations such as co-insurance and co-payments, which their insurance company specifies.

Simply put, medical billers and coders work together so that the physicians and other medical staff get paid timely. This is followed by a regular follow up with the medical insurers in order. Coding and billing are both essential to make sure that the money finds its way to the client’s bank account. It may be done either by two separate people or by a single individual, depending upon the size of the office. When deciding on the best pathway to follow, if the student is new to healthcare or works in the field and is not certified, it is recommended that the CHAA pathway is pursued prior to pursuing CPC or ICD 10.

CERTIFIED HEALTHCARE ACCESS ASSOCIATE - CHAA

This program is designed to prepare students to earn certification as a Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) or Healthcare Access Manager (CHAM) through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM). The CHAA certification is designed to maximize the knowledge base for the medical insurance biller. The certification equips the medical insurance biller with credentials needed to maintain high level subject matter expertise in medical billing and regulatory guidelines associated with revenue cycle management and patient access. Students will learn the principles of medical billing and insurance, and the skills and knowledge required to provide outstanding service in all areas of the healthcare process.

Medical billers play a vital role in the connection between health care providers, patients, and insurance companies. Medical billing is the process of submitting and following up on claims with health insurance companies to receive payment for services rendered by a healthcare provider. As a medical biller, you’ll need to read patient charts to determine medical history, including diagnoses and treatments given. Understanding charge entry, claims transmission, payment posting, insurance follow-up, and patient follow-up are duties of a medical biller. Medical billing translates a healthcare service into a billing claim. The responsibility of the medical biller in a healthcare facility is to follow the claim to ensure the practice receives reimbursement for the work the providers perform. A knowledgeable biller can optimize revenue performance for the practice. For those new to healthcare it is recommended that you pursue the billing certification before the coding certification. CFCC is the only school in our eastern region that offers this program and is accredited with NAHAM. Certification exam is $145. CHAA exam payment is facilitated through naham.org. This program consists of four core classes and a certification exam review class. The goal is to prepare students to take the CPC (Certified Professional Coder) in-patient coding certification exam through the AAPC (American Association of Professional Coders). MUSCULOSKELETAL SONOGRAPHY

Professional Development for Registered Sonographers and qualified Healthcare Providers

Ready to learn new sonography skills and join the rapidly growing field of musculoskeletal sonography?

The Musculoskeletal Sonography course is designed to provide the didactic, lab instruction and guidance for independent clinical practice necessary to perform entry-level musculoskeletal (MSK) sonography. Our target students are registered sonographers and other healthcare professionals who use ultrasound in their practice.

Course work includes scan protocols for the upper and lower extremities, anatomy and normal sonographic appearances, pathological processes and their sonographic appearances, pediatric MSK applications, interventional studies, and rheumatology applications. The materials in this hybrid course are presented online over a 16 week period and at face-to-face labs held on two weekends during the semester. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to recognize and acquire basic MSK images, correlate sonographic images with anatomical structures, recognize pathological processes, and assist with interventional procedures. Completion of this course should satisfy the recommendation for CME hours prior to taking the ARDMS MSKS examination or the APCA MSK examination.

This course is designed to provide training in inspecting and driving tractor trailers and assuming driver responsibilities on the road and at pickup and delivery points. Emphasis is placed on defensive driving, federal motor carrier safety regulations, trip planning, cargo handling, vehicle systems, hours of service, and accident prevention.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION CONSTRUCTION CERTIFICATE

This program provides students with knowledge and skills in working with historic homes, buildings, and structures. Throughout the three courses in the program, students will learn about different styles of historic homes and methods used to construct, repair, and preserve them. The first course in the series provides an introductory overview of various areas contractors will encounter when working on historic structures such as roofing, plaster, and windows. Courses II and III dig deeper into proper deconstruction, home rehabs, trade-specific concepts, and more.

Curriculum consists of lectures, hands-on labs, and guest speakers from local professionals. Taking a local approach, CFCC is collaborating with Historic Wilmington Foundation to provide this program. This program will provide students with a deeper understanding of architecture and historic districts, as it is specific to New Hanover and Pender Counties.

COURSE I: INTRO TO HISTORIC CONSTRUCTION

Take field trips to local historic homes and buildings to gain an understanding of and appreciation for Wilmington’s historic community. This class meets two times a week—once face-to-face and once online.

The course is designed to teach students how to properly renovate historical homes and small commercial units with a preservation approach. Students will be able to identify different styles of historic materials, and methods used to construct them. Have a full comprehension of interior and exterior value and how to preserve them as well as understand the architecture of Wilmington and its historic districts.

DULCE

A HANDFUL OF FIRSTS

Dulce Lopez-Jaimes is the daughter of Mexican immigrants who settled in Pender County, to raise their family. She is a firstgeneration high school graduate, a firstgeneration college graduate, and a first-generation firefighter.

Dulce earned two of those firsts simultaneously. She graduated from Pender Early College High School (PECHS) in 2021 with her high school diploma and her associate degree from Cape Fear Community College.

“PECHS and CFCC are a fabulous combination,” shared Dulce. “The faculty is supportive and inspirational. CFCC does an amazing job of preparing students to get where they want to be.”

EXPLORING INTERESTS

After graduation, Dulce took a gap year to explore other interests. Scrolling through her hometown’s Facebook page, she saw an ad calling for volunteers with Penderlea Fire Department. Without hesitation, Dulce signed up, and at the young age of 18, she took advantage of Penderlea Fire Department training sponsored by CFCC.

CFCC’S EWD Firefighter Academy program is a comprehensive program that includes certification classes in Firefighter, Hazardous Materials, Traffic Incident Management, and Emergency Medical Technician. CFCC also offers non-certification training to prepare firefighters for a career in public safety. Most courses are 60 hours or less.

“I have already earned over nine certifications,” Dulce commented. “I most recently completed the fire control course. That course really challenged me, but I loved every moment of it.”

As much as she loves working at the fire department, she hasn’t lost sight of her primary career goal. In 2022, Dulce transferred her associate degree to Fayetteville State University to pursue her bachelor’s degree in sociology.

EXPLORING CAREER OPTIONS

While enrolled at PECHS, Dulce was very active in a variety of clubs, student government, and teen court. The teen court was particularly impactful on Dulce.

Acting as the defense attorney for teen defendants, Dulce felt the pull to consider social work as a career choice. She wanted to help those who were struggling, neglected, or felt lost.

“These are real students who have real issues,” Dulce explained. “I realized through my experience in teen court, I could become a social worker. I can help kids early on, guide them, and help them make better decisions before the law gets involved.”

BLENDING CAREERS

Dulce would also like to apply her social work skills at the fire department. She envisions herself offering crisis assistance for those who’ve lost their home to a fire.

As an online student at Fayetteville State University, Dulce can continue to work for the local fire department and earn more fire certifications. She is particularly looking forward to turning 21 when she will be eligible to drive a firetruck.

Regardless of which career Dulce focuses on, she credits CFCC with putting her on the right path.

“Attending CFCC is more than just two years of college,” Dulce said. “It’s also the experience and the preparedness that you get. It’s a smaller environment so you get more personal attention. CFCC does a great job at providing resources to help you achieve.”

EMS training prepares the student to perform patient care in a prehospital setting. The course goal for EMT, Advanced EMT, and Paramedic is to prepare competent entry-level EMS personnel in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains. After successful completion of each class, a state examination is required for NC OEMS credentialing. EMT Refreshers, paramedic refreshers, Basic Anatomy and Physiology, CPR, and more are offered throughout the year.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Initial Courses will be offered daytime and evening. You may request a course for your agency.

This course is designed to train an individual to become an entry-level Emergency Medical Technician. The course teaches patient assessment and basic life support techniques such as airway management and CPR, hemorrhage control, oxygen administration, shock, bandaging and splinting, management of trauma and medical patients, child birthing, and transfer of patients to medical facilities. This course follows the guidelines established by the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services and meets the most current curriculum version. ADVANCED EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (AEMT)

The course is designed to build upon the EMT knowledge and provide health professionals with advanced knowledge and skills to better their critical thinking. This course meets NCOEMS requirements. Start date will be posted at cfcc.edu/publicsafety/ems. Placement testing and a copy of a North Carolina EMT card are required to register.

PARAMEDIC

This course is designed to prepare a person to care for the sick and injured at an advanced level of care. Students must be currently certified as an AEMT to be accepted into the program. This course covers topics that include basic anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, respiratory emergencies, venous access and medication administration, airway management, medical documentation, cardiac emergencies, pediatric emergencies, caring for the elderly, and medical emergencies. This course prepares persons to be competent entry-level practitioners and upon successful completion are eligible to take the North Carolina State credentialing exam.

NIMS ICS (National Incident Management System)

The National Incident Management System (NIMS) which was developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency provides a consistent

General subjects include, but are not limited to, criminal investigation, juvenile laws, civil process, law enforcement driver training, ABC laws, motor vehicle laws, patrol techniques, court procedures, emergency responses, and ethics and community relations. Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study to receive a certificate. Upon successful passage of the certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission, students may seek job opportunities with state, county, and municipal governments in North Carolina. In addition, knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired in this course of study qualify individuals for job opportunities with private enterprises in such areas as industrial, retail, and private security.

DETENTION OFFICER CERTIFICATION COURSE

Who Should Attend:

All persons who are employed or wish to be employed as detention officers at local confinement facilities are required by the Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission or the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission to successfully complete this course.

The basic standard operating procedures for local confinement facilities, the role and responsibilities of professional detention officers will be covered. This course employs lecture, discussion, demonstration, and practical exercises.

Course Requirements:

Attendance is required at all class sessions. The student must score a minimum of 70% on written tests and/or practical exercises for each block and score a minimum of 70% on the final Commission-administered written exam. All students confirmed for this course are required to provide a completed Medical History Statement (F-1) and Medical Examination Report (F-2), unless they have been grandfathered by the NC Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.

Special Concerns:

Uniforms are required for class unless otherwise stated. Students must also have proper gym clothes for physical assessment, physical training, and subject control techniques. Some evening sessions may be required.

All telecommunicators (sheriffs, police, emergency service centers, highway patrol, etc.) who are employed by or sponsored by an emergency service center. GLEN GARRISS: FROM DESK JOB TO MECHANICAL PASSION

GLEN’S JOURNEY

Before he could enroll in the two-year curriculum, Glen knew that obtaining his GED was a prerequisite. While working to earn his GED, Glen learned about Machining Technology, a new shortterm training program offered at CFCC. This program provided him with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to engage in machining operations while still working toward his GED. Intrigued by the opportunity to delve into the field before committing to a longer curriculum, Glen saw this program as a chance to sample the career choice with a small investment of both time and money.

Through this program, Glen discovered that the course credits earned could be transferred to the full curriculum program if he decided to pursue it further. This presented Glen with a valuable stepping stone, allowing him to explore the world of machining while keeping his options open for future educational pursuits.

After seven and a half years of working for a delivery company, Glen Garriss reached a pivotal realization: without a high school diploma, his prospects for advancement within the company were limited. Recognizing the need for a change and determined to chart a new career path, Glen had a heartfelt conversation with his supportive wife, and together, they agreed that Glen should enroll at Cape Fear Community College to earn his GED® qualification. This pivotal decision marked the beginning of Glen’s transformative journey towards unlocking new opportunities and pursuing his passions in a different professional realm.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

During Glen’s pursuit of his GED at CFCC, a long-time friend who had recently achieved an associate degree in Computer Integrated Machining, encouraged Glen to follow a similar path. Witnessing his friend transition from a 20-year career in butchery to landing a position at GE Aviation as a CNC Operator served as an inspiring role model for Glen. His friend also shared with him the job outlook and income possibilities as a CNC Operator. “My friend kept telling me that I need to do this. He said I can make good money at it.” “He said there are companies that need CNC machinists.”

TAKING THAT STEP

The Machining Technology course ignited a newfound passion in Glen, propelling him toward his chosen career path. With his enthusiasm fully fueled, he has now set his sights on enrolling in the associate degree program. With his sights firmly set on achieving his goals, Glen is determined to take the next step forward and test for his GED, knowing that it is a pivotal milestone on his journey towards continuing his career pursuit and realizing his dreams in the field he has grown to love.

EFFECTIVE TEACHER TRAINING

This course is designed to educate students about effective teaching practices by way of lecture-discussion and hands-on participation and to provide substitute teachers training in the following areas: standards of professional conduct, management of student behavior, effective classroom instructional strategies, health emergencies and first aid, blood borne pathogens, staff and student relations, and other relevant topics. This course is highly recommended for teaching assistants and participants who are interested in substitute teacher positions in Pender and surrounding counties.

IF you are not commissioned as an NC notary, this is the class you need to take. The NC Departments of the Secretary of State and Community Colleges provide a Notary Public Education Program to assure compliance with notary rules and regulations and to deliver quality notary service. The program educates notaries about legal, ethical and procedural requirements of notarial acts and is offered throughout the year. Bring a valid ID; 2016 NC Notary Public Manual (can be obtained from the CFCC bookstore) prior to the start day of class.

LEVEL I

Have you always wanted to learn how to speak Spanish? Are you interested in Spanish culture? Explore basic Spanish in a creative, interactive way that will help you retain and practice the language. This course is for beginner students who either have no knowledge of the language or simply need a refresher of the Spanish language basics. You will learn pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and conversation skills. In addition, you will be introduced to various aspects of Spanish culture, including historical and social topics.

This course builds upon beginner-level Spanish-speaking skills to help you read, write and speak Spanish with greater fluency. Using creative and interactive techniques, the instructor will help you advance your knowledge and skills through increasingly complex language structures and grammar. You will also have the opportunity to practice your conversational skills through group exercises. This class will be taught primarily in Spanish, in order to help students begin to speak the language more fluently. It is recommended that students complete Spanish: Level I or have equivalent experience.

WASTE WATER TREATMENT OPERATOR I & II (NC BIOLOGICAL I & II)

This course is designed to provide the individual with a general knowledge of the operation of biological wastewater treatment systems, knowledge of the laws and regulations related to treating wastewater systems, equipment use/ maintenance, and collecting/analyzing samples. Site visits and class hours are needed for this course. Upon completion, the student should be prepared for the NC Biological Grade I and II* North Carolina Water Pollution Control System Operator’s Certification Commission Exam in December of 2023 (WPCSOCC).

FORKLIFT CERTIFICATION

DIESEL SAFETY AND PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

This course covers workplace safety, safety data sheets, basic systems, terminology, and the proper use of tools related to the diesel industry and how to recognize potential safety risks. Topics include PM programs, services, schedules and DOT inspection requirements for highway vehicles. Upon completion of this course, the student will recognize potential safety risk, demonstrate safe work practices, use basic tools and complete PM services provided by manufacturers and specific equipment requirements. No prerequisite. Purchase textbooks at the CFCC north campus bookstore.
