Quelles sont les propriétés physiques du diamant ? Constitué uniquement de carbone, le diamant est le matériau naturel le plus dur sur les échelles de Vickers et de Mohs. Résistant, il est capable de rayer le verre et le quartz, mais ne peut être rayé que par un autre diamant. Malgré sa dureté, le diamant est naturellement cassant, son clivage régulier favorisant une cassure nette dans certains angles. Dépourvu de pléochroïsme, il est transparent à éclat adamantin, sa cassure est conchoïdale et sa luminescence est bleue à verdâtre.
What are the physical properties of diamonds? Made up entirely of carbon, diamond is the hardest natural material on the Vickers and Mohs scales. It is a highly-resistant stone that is able to scratch glass and quartz but can itself only be scratched by another diamond. However, despite its harness, diamond is naturally brittle, with its regular cleavage making it prone to clean breaks at certain angles. Diamond is devoid of pleochroism and transparent with adamantine lustre, while its fracture is conchoidal and its luminescence is blue to greenish.
