Jalon Valley Help (JVH) medical store loaned out a total of 195 items of medical equipment to adults and children.
For adults the principle equipment includes hospital beds, wheelchairs, Zimmer frames, crutches, walkers/ strollers, commodes, shower chairs and much more.
For children the main items are car safety seats, highchairs, stair gates and pushchairs as well as nappies, hygiene pads, pants and baby food.

JVH also operate, with Cancer Care Javea, a cancer care advisory centre at the Animo Centre in Alcalali each Thursday morning.
The Animo DropIn centre also offers tea and chat sessions on Tuesdays, Slimming and Craft group on Thursdays, and Seated Keep Fit on Fridays.
To do all these worthwhile tasks, as well as to raise money at their three shops and to arrange events, JVH need volunteers who can give a few hours to work as part of this funloving multinational team.
Please help Jalon Valley Help to be able to support even more people who are in need in our community, which for JVH spreads well beyond the valleys of Jalon and Orba.
JVH’s next event is a concert by the Ok Band at Los Arcos, Pedreguer on Thursday July 6. The show starts at
7.30pm and tickets cost €10. For further information about this and future events please contact eventsjvh@gmail.com and for information about the charity visit: www.jalonvalleyhelp.com

Inspiring women
THE regular monthly meeting of the European Union of Women Marina Alta (EUWMA) invited three sportswomen to talk about their journey, each of them achieving final recognition
and respect.
Triathlete Lisa Childs, boxer Amy Dale and weightlifter
Melissa Wall spoke movingly of their chosen sport, not one of them fitting into the common perceptions of a
‘women’s sport’.
Their stories unearthed disturbing facts: the provision of toilets for women runners and triathletes is abysmal, some national sports associations allow non Spanish nationals to compete but won’t award them prizes when they win, and most surprising of all, lots of women can be discouraging, very mean or worse, to those fit, healthy women who look good.
But the good news is that these three inspirational women are already coaching and encouraging other women and girls into their sport by using their own experiences and expertise.
And on a national and international scale, women sports professionals are fighting for equal treatment, quality equipment and equal pay. For further information visit ‘European Union of Women Marina Alta’ on Facebook or email euwmarinaalta@gmail.com
With pride
LA NUCIA commemorated International LGBT Pride Day this week by hanging a banner from the town hall and organising various educational and awareness activities.
‘Love, respect, freedom, rights. Without closets, with pride’ read the banner hung from the front of the council building for the third consecutive year to show solidarity with the worldwide event celebrated on June 28.
A number of cultural and educational activities have been carried out in the town over the last two months under the programme Educando en igualdad (Educating in equality).
They included a series of talks on preventing discrimination and raising awareness among students at IES La Nucia college, organised by teams of professionals from ALGTB BenidormMarina Baixa and Entendemos Alicante associations to promote tolerant and safe educational environments.
A second project entitled Biblioteca de colores (Library of colours) was held at the Sant Rafael and Muixara primary education centres with a collection of 20 books promoting the visibility, integration and respect of diverse family models.
A new era?
OLIVA U3A says adios to Barry Purvis and welcomes Joe Bellenie as the new president of the group.
Barry has been president for the last three years. However, the role is not new to Joe. He has been involved with Oliva U3A since its inception in 2007 and in fact was a founder member.
The official handover of the presidency took place at the recent committee meeting. Officers and committee members, old and new, thanked Barry and warmly welcomed Joe. Oliva U3A has over 400 members and 27 active groups. New members are always welcome.

JAVEA’S Arenal beach was the scene of a spectacular drill operation by Valencia Guardia Civil Narcotics department last week. Officers manned patrol boats and a helicopter to stage a chase and capture of a suspected vessel seven miles out from the coast after receiving an alert from central command.
Preserved area
THE regional government has granted official protection to the volcanic outcrop in Altea’s Cala del Soio and Platja Fòssil in Cap Negret. The area will be preserved while the authorities draw up the management plan of the site that was declared a Natural Monument in 2020.
No smoking
JAVEA now has its first smokefree beach. The flag that certifies there is no pollution by smoke or cigarette butts is already flying in La Grava, with the restriction due to be extended to other parts of the coast next year.
School van
BENITACHELL Council has sent a van full of school furniture to a refugee camp in the Sahara desert after a town hall worker visited the camp last year. The cargo includes desks, chairs, blackboards, and copies of a children’s book by a local writer.
Healthier pool
JALON municipal swimming pool is open for the summer. As a novelty this year, the water is free from chemical products following the installation of a salt electrolysis system that prevents allergic reactions and irritation.
Caravan problem
RESIDENTS in Javea are complaining about caravans and motorhomes in the Primer Muntanyar area that have reportedly been there for more than 10 days, as opposed to just stopping by, which contravenes municipal legislation.
Forgers arrested
AN operation by Benidorm and Madrid police forces at Calpe market enabled the dismantling of a criminal gang dedicated to forging products of wellknown brands of clothing and technology.
Up to 10 suspects have been arrested in Calpe and the Valencia towns of Manises and Quart de Poblet, where officers discovered three warehouses with more than 47,000 counterfeit products.
The case was reported by representatives of the forged brands, who informed the authorities that the fake products were being sold at several stalls in the local market of the Marina Alta town.
Officers performed an initial investigation and identified and arrested the sellers of seven stalls with the help of an expert in brand forgery who con

A LOGGERHEAD sea turtle was found after laying 80 eggs on Denia’s Marineta Cassiana beach last week.
A passerby discovered the nest while walking along the beach and immediately called the Local Police, who contacted the regional Stranded Animal Network.
The experts rushed to the scene and collected the eggs, taking 14 of them to the Oceanografic Foundation in Valencia where they were placed in incubators to ensure they have the ideal temperature and conditions to guaran

Meanwhile, veterinary experts performed a blood test and an ultrasound on the mother to check her state of health, while technicians from the Stranded Animal Network fitted her with a satellite emitter to follow her movements over the next few days.
This is the first instance of turtle egg laying recorded in the Valencia Region so far this year and the 10th since records began.

CALPE MARKET: More than 47,000 counterfeit products were discovered in warehouses.
SUMMER HEAT: First heatwave of the season.
PROVERB OF THE WEEK
SUMMER landed with a bang in Alicante Province at the weekend with the first heatwave of the season caused by the entrance of a mass of hot air from the north of Africa.
Meaning that it is better to be careful now so that problems do not occur later on. The proverb was first recorded in 1837, by Irish novelist Samuel Lover in his novel ‘Rory O’More’.
Phew!
Sunday was the hottest day of the year so far, with l’Orxa (El Comtat) registering a maximum temperature of 40.2ºC, while in the Marina Alta, Pego hit 39ºC and Denia recorded a sweltering 36ºC.
The State Weather Agency (Aemet) activated
a yellow alert for heat, with minimum temperatures not expected to drop below 20ºC until at least the end of the week.
This led to the first ‘tropical night’ of the year all along the coast and in many inland areas, making sleeping difficult for those without air con
ditioning.
However, air flows coming in from the East meant the mercury did not climb as high as in other parts of Spain such as Andalucia and CastillaLa Mancha, who bore the brunt of the first official heatwave of the summer. The situation was expected to return to normal today, Thursday June 29, with temperatures dropping back down to regular registers for the end of June.
Exploring nature
PEGO Town Hall has launched a series of guided tours by boat through the Marjal nature park for the summer.

The trips down the Salinar river will last 30 minutes while experts explain about the flora and fauna that inhabit the protected marshland, including the project to reintroduce the osprey eagle, as well as the benefits of caring for the natural area and the threats it faces.
Pego Tourism councillor Ricardo Sendra explained that the boats will have a total capacity for 12 people at a time and that the price of the trips will be €5 for adults and €3 for children.
Visits will take place between 5pm and 9pm from Monday to Friday and from 10.30am to 2pm at weekends. They will be ‘pet friendly’ although owners are advised to keep dogs on a leash for the duration of the outing.
These outings will “increase our town’s tourism offer and will enable residents and visi

After the flames
THE Valencia regional government has launched a project to help kickstart tourism in several small towns and villages affected by the massive forest fire in the Vall d’Ebo last year.
The blaze destroyed more than 12,000 hectares of forest area in the mountains of the Marina Alta and Comtat districts after a bolt of lightning hit the Vall d’Ebo in the middle of the driest and hottest period of the summer.
The €50,000 investment approved by the Generalitat will be used to improve and diversify the area’s tourism services, increase resources and promote quality and sustainable tourism.
Projects will include a programme of free cultural visits including guided tours through the affected towns, visits to museums, caves and other points of interest, and designing rambling routes through the countryside.
A series of environmental workshops will be held to improve biodiversity, as well as talks and conferences in municipalities and schools to boost ‘ecotourism’ and promote respect and care for nature. The agreement also includes the design and production of promotional material, such as tourist and heritage maps of the Marina Alta municipalities affected by the fire.

Summer market
THE summer edition of the Mercat del Convent farming and handcrafts market in Altea was a resounding success last week and has become a major event on the local culture diary.
The number of stands selling local produce increased to 15 this time round, and as well as the market a number of cultural and fun activities took place including a children’s theatre, a mushroomgrowing workshop and a concert by Duo Bach at the church.
Organisers highlighted the large number of people
who visited the Plaça del Convent during the whole day the market was open and announced that they are already preparing the autumn edition.
“Our goal is for local farmers and producers to display their products on a nonworkday to reach more people and for them to be able to make a living from the land in tourist towns such as ours,” declared acting Agriculture and Culture councillor Jose Orozco.
“I encourage all residents and visitors to visit future editions of the market.”
THE Provincial Charity Golf Tournament, held on Thursday June 15, was once again a great success.
The event, held at Bonalba Golf resort, attracted 80 golfers from across the province comprising 50 visitors - a record for this eventand 18 masons who represented seven Lodges.
Those Lodges that weren’t fielding a team helped with the sponsorship of the event, ensuring that all 18 holes were sponsored plus three Longest drives and four Nearest the Pins.
This was the fourth time that the event has been held and the third consecutive time at Bonalba Golf Resort, and it gets better every year!
The course was presented
in good condition, the weather was perfect for golf and this showed in the results. The format was, as always, Texas Scramble Pairs and the great conditions resulted in 26 of the 40 pairs scoring under par and only three shots separating the top 10.
The first and second pairings had a magnificent score of eight under par, with Helmut Treiber and Robert Heyens winning on lowest handicap from Derek and Karen Cruickshank. Both pairs play at Bonalba with the Costa Blanca Golf Society, no doubt helped by their local knowledge of the tricky greens.
The prize presentation took place on the terrace overlooking the golf course
with the Presentation Committee comprising of Juan Alberto Albert, Bonalba Competitions Director, Sra Pascale Le Roux, Director Bonalba Golf Resort, R W Brother Rodney Bignell, Provincial Grand Master, and W Brother Michael Wyatt, one of the event organisers, presenting prizes to the winners.
The event was summarised in the final speech by the Provincial Grand Master, thanking the organisers, players and sponsors for helping us raise €7,420 for provincial charities including the hungry and homeless in our province, who are supported through food banks and charitable organisations.

He was accompanied by Citizen Participation and Public Space councillors Ana Pellicer and José Ramón González, respectively.
Sr Pérez highlighted the importance of the new installations “in an area that was lacking this type of infrastructure and which neighbours had been requesting for some time.”
In another development, the mayor and councillor González also visited the work being carried out on the new walkway on Poniente beach that will reach the Paseo de Colón and is expected to be finished by the end of this month.

THURSDAY June 21 was Fiesta night in Alcalali, with The Entertainers providing the show and Jalon Valley ARC raising funds.

The songs included several classics, such as Annie’s Song, Country Roads and Across the Universe, a Beatles song which has not had the acclaim it deserves. They ended the set with La Bamba as a taster of what was to come.

Arte y Mar takes place in Els Poblets on Saturday July 1 from 10.30am to 1pm at L’Almadrava culture centre and is open to residents and visitors of all ages, with no prior artistic knowledge required.
Participants will create works of art using recycled refuse and discarded items commonly found on the beach, such as empty containers, cans and broken objects.

FINESTRAT Council has launched a municipal grant to help residents pay their rubbish collection tax.
The project is inspired by the concept of Marcel Duchamp’s readymades and emblematic works such as Andy Warhol’s Brillo Box and Campbell’s Soup, seeking to transform everyday objects into meaningful pieces of art.
The main objective of the workshops is to promote awareness, emotional exploration and reflection on waste generation.
Participation is free of charge but requires prior inscription by emailing leina.talleres@gmail.com, as places are limited.
The subsidy is aimed at residents aged over 65, pensioners, unemployed workers, large families and workers affected by temporary redundancy plans (ERTEs) who meet a series of eligibility criteria.
Recipients will be reimbursed for the full amount of the refuse collection bill, which currently stands at €105.
“It is a subsidy aimed at supporting all those people who find themselves in a difficult economic situation,” declared Finestrat mayor Juanfran Pérez Llorca.
Applications can be submitted in person at the Registro de Entrada department on the ground floor of the town hall, in the municipal office in La Cala (Avenida Marina Baixa, 29) or online through the town hall website www.finestrat.sedelectronica.es until July 15.
The grant is compatible with the IBI property tax subsidies of up to €300 that will be launched in October.

Controversial restoration
RESTORATION work on Denia castle is now complete.
Improvements carried out over the last several months focused on the external wall on the Baix la Mar side, with workers removing the remaining scaffolding on Friday June 23.
The wall has been reinforced, with cracks and joints filled in and invasive vegetation cleared. However, there is one section that
is attracting criticism on social media.
It is the stretch nearest the Llavador tower opposite Sanchis Guarner street where concrete has been used to raise the upper part of the wall to bring it level with the rest of the section.
Critics are complaining that the work has ruined the original structure and that the contrast between
the new and old sections is too noticeable, but experts insist that that was the whole point.

ALFAZ DEL PI Town Council and several local associations are collaborating with a summer school project in Ivory Coast.
The project takes place from June 29 to July 27 and is spearheaded by town hall social worker Llanos Picazo, one of five Spanish volunteers who will work in the African country this summer.
“This is a socioeducational and health project that will be developed in the towns of BouakeSakassou and KorhogoKoni and in cooperation with the Saint Camille Association,” explained Sra Picazo.
“We will be assisting and accompanying
more than 250 children between the ages of two and 14. The intention is that they spend a summer of smiles, games, adventures, sport and education, and for this we need material to be able to carry out the different activities.”
Donations of material and money to purchase the necessary items, including food and medications, can be made through the Coempa, Memba, ACCU, Huellas de Mujer, Corazón Exprés and Voluntariado Social associations, or at the Oficina de Cooperación at Alfaz Town Hall from 9am to 2pm.

On the black list Mental health forum
THE third Youth Forum took place in Teulada last week with an emphasis on mental and emotional health.
Students at the IES Teulada college discussed and learnt about ways to manage their emotions, improve their mental health and lead healthier lifestyles.
The sessions were led by leading experts in the field and topics included anxiety and depression, mourning and how to find a balance between mind and body, with participants taking part in a yoga class.
A laughter therapy session was also included to add a touch of humour and positivity to the Forum, with students learning about the mental and physical benefits of this practice that helps reduce emotional tension and improve mood.
Teulada Youth department highlighted the importance of the Forum as a source of twoway information between the local council and young residents to outline their needs and inform them about the services and resources at their disposal.
Equal opportunities
BENIDORM Council is taking part in a regional employment drive for people with mental illness.
The town hall has requested a subsidy to offer a ninemonth work contract to a local resident with a recognised severe mental disorder or with serious mental health issues. The ‘Avalem capacitats’ (‘Endorsing abilities’) scheme is open to all local councils who have a municipal Care and Monitoring Service for people with Severe Mental Health Problems (SASEM) department, as is the case of Benidorm.
In May, the town hall successfully applied for a grant from the regional Employment services to offer ninemonth contracts to eight residents with recognised disabilities, and in December approved a Public Employment drive offering 26 vacancies to people with disability or functional diversity.
ENVIRONMENTAL organisation Ecologistas en Acción have published their yearly ‘Black Flags’ report.
The document singles out beaches, ports, activities and businesses throughout the country that fail to uphold certain environmental standards.
Ecologistas have awarded 48 of these negative distinctions this year for a wide range of faults including waste dumps, deficient sanitation, accumulation of rubbish on the seabed and noise pollution, among others.
In Alicante Province, one beach in particular is a frequent entry on the black list.
The Arenal in Javea is a beautiful and famous beach that nonetheless has an ongoing problem with storms and heavy rainfall, when the sand invariably appears littered with debris and rubbish.
“The correct management of storm discharges, the implementation of efficient sanitation systems and raising awareness of the importance of taking care of our beaches are key steps to reverse this situation,” concludes the or
ganisation.
In another development in Javea last week, several people who were taking part in two kayak excursions near the Granadella bay witnessed two construction workers dumping rocks and building debris from a chalet off the mountain into the sea following orders from a third man.
The witnesses posted videos and photographs on their social media accounts showing how they had to
dodge the ‘shower of stones’ to avoid being hurt and sustaining damage to their kayaks.
When the participants in the excursion shouted at them to stop, the man apparently in charge allegedly replied that they had permission to do so from the town hall and that they were ‘just stones’.
However, this is doubtful, as it is forbidden to dump anything into bays and it also
appears that the waste was not ‘just stones’, as it also included many other elements such as a small metal door, blocks of masonry, bricks and a metal bar.
The case has been reported to the municipal Environment department and to the Guardia Civil.
It is not the first time this kind of situation is reported in the area, as the cliffs are lined with several chalets under construction.

IN our office we have encountered this situation on more than one occasion. An individual, shortly before passing awayand despite the fact that he/she was suffering from an illness such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, etc modifies his/her will. As a result, in the will made before his/her death, a specific child or a third person is favoured. In these cases: Is it possible to

challenge the will on the grounds of lack of capacity? We analyse this matter, along with the access to medical records of deceased persons, in today’s article.
Challenging a will on the
grounds of lack of capacity: presumption of validity and ‘favor testamenti’.
Let’s start with the basics. The judgement of capacity made by all notaries, when someone grants a will before them, enjoys a presumption of validity known as ‘iuris tantum’. In other words, from the outset, it is assumed that the will is valid and effective. And that the person who made the will was in full use of his or her faculties and had enough capacity. However, the notary’s judgement does not have the status of an expert or technical report. In other words, it does not guarantee that the person did in fact have full capacity. Therefore, if evidence of the contrary is presented, this presumption can be destroyed.
If a relative, heir, etc wants to overturn this presumption, ‘hints’ or ‘suspicions’ about the testator’s capacity are not enough. The evidence that a person was not in full use of his or her faculties when he/she granted the will must be clear and unequivocal. Otherwise, in
application of the general principle of law ‘favor testamenti’, it will be presumed that the person was in possession of his/her faculties. And that the will is valid.
How to prove the testator’s lack of capacity: Access to medical records of a deceased person.
In these cases, access to the deceased’s medical records is essential. The question is: do the heirs have the right to access to the deceased’s medical records? The answer is YES, as there is a legitimate interest, such as confirming the testator’s capacity, for the purpose of contesting the will.
Both art. 18 of Law 41/2002 of 14 November on patient au
tonomy and rights and obligations regarding clinical information and documentation; and art. 46 of Law 10/2014, of 29 December, on Health of the Valencian Community; establish that:
“They shall only provide access to the clinical records of deceased patients to persons related to the patient, for family or de facto reasons, unless the deceased had expressly prohibited it, and this is accredited.”
Article 3 the Organic Law on Data Protection 3/2018 (which in addition to ‘family members’, expressly mentions the heirs) also states:
“Persons linked to the deceased for family or de facto reasons, as well as their heirs, may contact the data controller or data processor in order to request access to the personal data of the deceased and, where appropriate, their rectification or erasure.”
Neurology, psychiatry, and
other departments
When the deceased’s lack of full capacity is to be accredited, in addition to the clinical history, it is advisable to request reports and documents from other departments. In particular, all those related to the testator’s capacity: the areas of neurology, psychiatry, etc.
Conclusions
Challenging a will for lack of capacity is a complex process and the access to medical records of a deceased person, is key. At WhiteBaos Lawyers we are experts in legal advice on Inheritance Tax, Inheritances, Contesting Wills, etc both when the applicable law is Spanish law, as well as in those processes in which there is a connection with foreign laws (English, Italian, German, French, etc.). IT has been some time since one of Britain’s top bands has visited Spain, but that is all about to change.
Speaking to Robin Campbell, one of the original founding members of the iconic UB40, he explained that “we can’t just decide where to go, but rely on management and promoters to find the work for us.
“As a touring band, now in our 45th year, we have played almost everywhere and when we return from an upcoming American tour, we are really looking forward to entertaining our fans in Spain!”
They have three performances planned for Spain, July 26 in Santander, July 29 at Es Jardí in Calvia Mallorca and July 30 at Mare Nostrum in Fuengirola.
With 20 studio and six live albums and more than 50 hit singles to their name, the band has a huge range of songs to choose from and recognises the fact that fans will expect to hear some of the big hits.
Robin said “After all this time, I still really enjoy being on stage with the band, but I think we would all get bored if all we did was just resurrect the hits.
“We are still writing and our next

to travel to Spain due to much more restrictive visa and instrument importation requirements and only the bigger and better known performers can really afford to visit.
“You have to rely on good management and promoters to take care of these matters so that we can concentrate on what we do best, which is to entertain, but not too many years ago, we changed management and now my son (who used to look after social media for the band) and his business partner are doing a great job for us.”
With four original members still forming the basis of the band there has been some confusion with there apparently being two versions and Robin doesn’t hide the fact that he is disappointed that his other brother Ali left and then effectively set up in competition and now tours as UB40 featuring Ali Campbell.
album which will be entitled UB45 (because that’s how old we are) features our new singer Matt Doyle with one or two reworkings of our favourite songs as well as a selection of new numbers.
“Matt used to play in a band
called Kioko which supported us on around 40 gigs and I thought what a great singer he was, so when my brother Duncan suffered a stroke and had to retire in order to recover his health, Matt was the obvious replacement.
“The good news is that Duncan is really on the mend and Matt has fitted in with the band as perfectly as we expected.”
It has become clear that since both the pandemic and Brexit that it is quite difficult for British bands
The hard core of this band however have been together since they were 11yearold mates at school, love what they do and the fact that their fans do as well so promise three top performances in Spain this July.

METEOROLOGISTS in Spain are forecasting that the summer of 2023 will experience similar heat to last year, but with sporadic bouts of abundant storms and rainfall.
According to Mar Gómez, from eltiempo.es: “We could have a summer quite similar to last year in terms of temperatures.” She added though that it will vary in terms of rainfall, since: “last year was not rainy, but this year we anticipate that it will rain more.”
The weather expert’s prediction was backed up by Juan Jesús González Alemán, a meteorologist with AEMET, the State Meteorological Agency.
This meteorological phenomenon will occur more this summer due to the: “arrival of several DANAs and troughs causing stormy activity,” he indicated.
Although it is still too early for the experts to be certain, they pointed out that these severe storms may even develop in the form of hail.
This modality is: “more common in spring,” explained Gómez, but: “if we have a very hot and rainy summer, there may be episodes of hail because severe storms form,” she added.
González Alemán further explained that it is going to be rainy this summer because: “a blockade will prevail over the Scandinavian region.”
This ‘Scandinavian blockade’ is an atmospheric phenomenon by which: “the normal position of the air masses in a region is reversed, placing the warm air closer to the pole than the cold air,” indicated the AEMET on its website.
As a result, this powerful anticyclone located over that area of Scandinavia would be responsible for the storms moving further south on the European continent they detailed.
The rains that are expected will increase the humidity in the environment and together with the heat will cause a feeling of muggy weather.
Lovable rascal
THERE have been many self proclaimed ‘lovable rascals’ living on the Costa del Sol and one of the most memorable, Ronnie Knight recently passed away aged 89.
Initially best known to the general public as the husband of the late Dame Barbara Windsor, who was his second wife in a partnership that lasted 21 years, he found a second home in Spain prior to any extradition treaty coming into effect. His knowledge of the law ensured that he was acquitted in 1980 after being charged with the murder of gangster Alfredo ‘Italian Tony’ Zomparelli, who stabbed and killed his brother David, but when he later confirmed in 1998 that he had hired a ‘hitman’ (which he denied again in 2002), he couldn’t be
charged again due to the ‘double jeopardy’ law.
He ran away to the Costa del Sol in 1984, on the same day that his brother John was arrested on suspicion of being involved in a major robbery at Security Express the previous year.
Thus began his 10
year sojourn on Spain’s Costa del Sol where he opened an Indian restaurant as well as a nightclub and bar and once established in Fuengirola and having kept possession of a local property following his divorce from Barbara Windsor, he had a high profile
marriage to third wife Sue Haylock.
With money troubles, he was lured back to the UK by the News of the World with a promise of big money for his exclusive story, he was arrested and charged with handling £315,000 of the cash stolen from Security Express.
Since his release he moved to Cambridge and died from pneumonia on June 12 having suffered from Parkinson’s disease.

IKEA is steaming ahead with its major expansion plans in the Spanish market. The Swedish homeware giant expects to close its 2023 books, which they do in August, with a 5 per cent increase in revenue.
If successful, this achievement would push their earnings above €1.9 billion, a record for the company. This optimistic projection comes directly from the company’s annual financial report submitted to the Spanish Commercial Registry and announced on Friday, June 23.
The report provides a summary of their activities in 2022, a year that also saw Ikea soar to new heights, raking in €1.82 billion, an impressive 8.2 per cent increase on the previous year.
Design for success
In another notable change, their digital sales channel accounted for 22 per cent of their overall business, substantially more than in previous years.
This past year was pivotal for Ikea, confirming a robust recovery from the pandemic and laying the groundwork for their ambitious growth plans in Spain, which they have announced over the past few months and which are recorded in the report.
However, the company is also facing a tax penalty of €10.4 million, after a tax inspection.
Foreign investment soars
FOREIGN investment in Spain has skyrocketed, painting a promising picture for the year ahead. The Secretary of State for Trade published the encouraging data in the Foreign Investment Register DataInvex which was released on Tuesday, June 20.
The report reveals a staggering 20.3 per cent surge in nonETVE investment during the first quarter of 2023, compared to the same period last year.
The country welcomed a colossal influx of €9.91 billion, representing a remarkable 50.8 per cent growth compared to the previous fiveyear average.
Héctor Gómez, the Minister for Industry, Trade, and Tourism, credited the government’s economic policies for fostering international confidence in Spain. “Today’s figures reflect the positive economic climate and the world’s eagerness to invest in our country, with the industrial sector emerging as the key recipient of these investments,” he explained.
The industrial sector, closely trailed by services, claimed the largest shares of the foreign investments, with 48.8 per cent and 48.5 per cent respectively. The remaining 2.6 per cent flowed into the construction sector.
Leading the charge among investor nations was the United States, accounting for a whopping 58.1 per cent of the investment.
Winning formation
SPAIN’S dreams of hosting another FIFA World Cup is looking increasingly likely after contenders continue to drop out.
Saudi Arabia’s shock decision to pull out of the competition to host the 2030 World Cup on Thursday, June 22 has further cleared the path for Spain to host the global football extravaganza.
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, informed their partners about their withdrawal from the World Cup bid. Initially, Saudi Arabia had intended to form a joint bid with Greece and Egypt but ultimately decided against it, before pulling out entirely.
It seems Saudi Arabia recognised the strength of the Spanish bid which also consists of Portugal and Morocco.
The idea of a joint SpanishPortuguese bid had been suggested for years, but it was only in March that Morocco’s inclusion officially launched the bid. Previously, Ukraine had also been part of the SpanishPortuguese coalition but later withdrew.
Now, the sole remaining contender is the South American bid consisting of Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Paraguay.

THE surfing community have been left griefstricken after a wellknown athlete and veteran surfer was killed in a freak accident.
The incident occurred on Saturday, June 17, when 51 year old Jacobo Rodríguez was surfing on the beach of Salinas, in Asturias, according to a news outlet.
Rodríguez was a wellknown resident of Salinas, and his passing in such tragic circumstances has been a huge shock to friends and family not to mention residents of the area.
The highly experienced, veteran surfer
had gone out as usual to enjoy the waves. At some point, it is believed that a wave took him unexpectedly during which his own surfboard struck his head.
Despite the quick response of an offduty National Police officer who was nearby who pulled him to the shore, and a cardiologist who was also present it was not enough to save him.
After an hour and a half, he was transferred by helicopter to the hospital where he sadly died the following day due to a cardiorespiratory arrest.
The Spaniard was already an important and wellknown member of the world of surfing after decades on the board.

Sip sip hooray!
QUENCH your curiosity with this H2O update! A report by the Spanish Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) found that the country’s clearest tap water can be found in the north and west of the country.
So, which cities take the crown for the best tap water? While Madrid is renowned for having excellent tap water, other contenders steal the spotlight in the report, which was released back in March but made headlines on Thursday, June 8 as consumers begin looking towards the summer.
The northern cities of Burgos, Vigo, and San Sebastian take the top position in the report, offering a truly satisfying sip. Las Palmas also received a mention for its crystal clear water.
On the other hand, Zaragoza, Ciudad Real, Palma de Mallorca, Huelva, and Barcelona struggled to win over discerning critics from the OCU.
According to the OCU, tap water also reigns supreme over its bottled counterparts in both cost and quality.
However, many consumers still opt for bottled
water due to the unappealing taste or hardness of their local tap water. The hardness factor, caused by substances like calcium, determines whether the water leaves a bitter aftertaste.
On June 21, the Guardia Civil in the socalled ‘Operation Queen 33,’ developed jointly with the French Gendarmerie, arrested six people, for the alleged smuggling of certain protected species.
The operation was also with the collaboration of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
CITES is an international agreement between governments, which aims to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species.
Many different species were seized, which include an ocelot, a boreal lynx, servals, macaws and several marmoset monkeys, plus various weapons, ammunition and cash, according to a report from the Guardia Civil.
The detainees were charged with the crimes of trafficking in species, false documents, smuggling, belonging to a criminal group and illegal possession of weapons.

The property report found that the country has a shocking 450,000 unsold and uninhabited new homes that have failed to attract buyers. These properties, remnants of the early 2000’s real estate boom, remain in the hands of developers and do not meet the current market demands.
SPAIN is justly proud of its world famous Pata Negra hams which sell at prices averaging between €500 to €700 for a leg.

Officers were alerted to the fact that certain hams were appearing which seemed to carry counterfeit labelling.
To make normal, low quality hams have the appearance of the highly priced Pata Negra version, those involved were first washed with pressure water or burned so that the fat would emerge.

and charcoal was applied to them to improve their appearance and if the whole leg wasn’t up to visual standards, then they would slice it and sell the ham in packets.
With the ‘good looking’ hams, false documentation was supplied which persuaded innocent buyers to take delivery of the fake hams and the scam is believed to have netted millions before it was finally closed down.

ESSENTIAL tips for children. Drowning incidents can occur quickly and silently, making it vital for parents to be wellinformed and proactive in preventing such accidents. One of the most critical safety rules is to never leave children unattended near water. Even shallow water can pose a risk, and accidents can occur within seconds. Always stay within arm’s reach of children.
When around water, it is important not to leave toddlers wearing disposable nappies. These nappies can become heavy when soaked, causing toddlers to sink if they fall into the water.
If you are not a confident swimmer, it is recommended to take swimming lessons to ensure you can respond effectively if your child gets into difficulty in the water. Basic knowledge of water safety, rescue techniques, and CPR can be invaluable in case of an emergency.
While inflatable armbands and other flotation devices can provide some assistance in the water, they should never be solely relied upon to keep children safe. These devices can deflate or slip off, and children can still get into dangerous situations even while wearing them. Toddlers are particularly vulnerable due to their lack

of understanding and impulse control. Secure pools with childproof barriers, lock gates and remove any objects that could potentially allow them to climb over barriers.
Enrol your child in swimming lessons as early as possible. Swimming skills can instill confidence in the water, teach children how to stay afloat, and enable them to handle emergencies better.
When selecting swimming suits for your children, opt for bright and easily visible colours. Brightly coloured swimsuits increase their visibility in the water. Avoid choosing swimming suits in shades of blue or grey, as these colours can blend with the water.
In case of an emergency, the designated emergency services number is 112.
Despite the fact that Sánchez’s luxury private plane was parked in a discreet area, he was spotted on board, according to a news source on Saturday, June 24.
This will be President Sánchez’s second precampaign rally outside the peninsula in which the luxury jet has been employed. The flight will cost an estimated €56,000 from a budget of €450,000 that has been allocated for travel. In the May 28 campaign, half of that budget was spent on two flights.
The President has once
again chosen to use the same aircraft that he used for most of his trips during the May 28 campaign to travel to the island of Tenerife to take part in a meeting with minister Héctor Gómez and Canary Islands president Ángel Víctor Torres.
The aircraft was scheduled to take off on Saturday June 24 from the Madrid Barajas corporate terminal, around 8:15am. However, the presidential entourage did not take off until almost half an hour later, at 8:42am. Consequently, the plane arrived later than scheduled at the Tenerife North airport in La Laguna at 10.11am.
The jet, which was chosen by Sánchez has a cabin height of 1.88 metres and a width of 2.34
metres, a size larger than that of the official Falcon and in which the president of the government is no doubt more comfortable.
The private jet has space for up to 10 passengers, with a top speed of 891 kilometres per hour and requires the presence of at least three crew members: a pilot, a co pilot and a cabin technician.

Boats attacked by Orcas
TWO sailboats participating in ‘The Ocean Race’ were attacked by a pod of orcas on Friday, June 23.
The race staged since 1973 is known as one of the world’s most complex and demanding team competi
tions in which the sailors compete against nature and the sea.
What they didn’t expect, was the additional involvement of killer whales who seemingly decided they wanted to ‘play’ with the boats.
The incident occurred at around 2.50pm while the two VO65 sailboats belonging to Team JAJO and Mirpuri Trifork Racing were racing in the Atlantic, located to the west of Gibraltar.
This part of the world has recently seen a spate of similar attacks by one or more specimens of this cetacean on the hulls or rudders of boats.
As the team members were battling the waves to reach their destination, their boats were suddenly attacked by a pod of orcas.
In a tweet posted on The Ocean Race account @theo
ceanrace, they wrote: ‘On their approach to Gibraltar this afternoon, Team JAJO encountered a pod of orcas which led to a scary moment on board the VO65! Thankfully, the crew and the boat are unharmed. The Dutch boat skippered by Jelmer van Beek is back on its way to Genova’.
Fortunately, there were no injuries or material damage to
the boats, even though the killer whales reportedly put all their efforts into hitting, pushing, ramming, and biting the rudders of the boats for around 20 minutes.
The sailors suddenly found themselves experiencing one of the most dangerous, surreal and complicated situations of their lives, according to a news source.
Summer strikes called off
BRITISH holidaymakers received good news at the weekend with the announcement that security staff at Heathrow Airport had accepted an improved pay offer.
Around 2,000 members of the Unite union had threatened industrial action that was due to start on Saturday, June 24. They were to strike every weekend after that, right through the summer, for a total of 31 days, until August 27.
Further negotiations between Unite and Heathrow Airport Limited have now resulted in the workers receiving the offer of an increase of between 15.5 per cent and 17.5 per cent said the union.
The strikes would have involved security staff based in Terminal 3 of the airport facility plus their colleagues who work in Terminal 3. They are responsible for checking airside workers and vehicles entering the facility.
“This was a hard won victory which
demonstrates what can be achieved when workers stand together and take action together,” insisted Sharon Graham, the general secretary of Unite, according to a news source on Friday, June 23.
She continued: “The pay deal at Heathrow is a further demonstration of how Unite’s complete focus on jobs, pay and conditions are having direct benefits for its members.”
The decision will come as a massive relief to the hordes of British holidaymakers looking to head abroad this summer. Heathrow Airport is a major international hub and caters for flights to a variety of exotic destinations.
Despite one set of strikes being averted, travellers still face uncertainty over trips to Europe this summer. Air traffic controllers in Italy and France have threatened to down tools over demands for better salaries and working conditions.

Interest rates up
IN an effort to control inflation, a major move by the Bank Of England saw them raise interest rates by half a point to 5 per cent.
As reported on Thursday, June 22 the Bank Of England increased interest rates to combat inflation which is causing misery for households up and down the UK, according to a news source.
The Bank’s monetary policy committee (MPC) took the bold move of a halfpoint increase rather than the anticipated quarterpoint rise. This will be the 13th consecutive hike in rates since December 2021, bringing it to the highest level since 2008.
Following the announcement, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the government would “remain steadfast in its course” to slow down rising inflation, a decision which comes amid growing calls to intervene as millions of householders are struggling with mortgage payments.
The PM expanded his view: “The reason interest rates are going up is because inflation is too high. This is something that makes everybody poorer, that’s what inflation does. That’s why we’ve got to grip it, we’ve got to reduce it and interest rates are a part of that.’
Sunak reiterated the enormity of the problem: “Now, I always said this would be hard and clearly it’s got harder over the past few months but it’s important that we do do that.’
Yesterday’s figures showed that inflation remained at 8.7 per cent in
May, when all expectations predicted, it would fall to 8.4 per cent. This is still a long, long way away from the Bank’s target of 2 per cent.
A spokesperson on behalf of the MPC said: “There has been significant upside news in recent data that indicates more persistence in the inflation process, against the backdrop of a tight labour market and continued resilience in demand.”
The Bank of England confirmed that it would continue to monitor the situation and if deemed necessary would push interest rates higher.
Tributes to missing firefighter
A SERVING member of the UK Fire Service was reported missing while taking part in an English Channel charity swim.
Fortytwoyearold Iain Hughes, a member of Wednesbury fire station, West Midlands, started the charity swim on the morning of Tuesday, June 20. Despite being accompanied by a support boat he was reported missing later that day.
An extensive search for the lost swimmer was launched including helicopters from both France and Belgium, but it was later confirmed the search had been called off.
The married dad of two was aiming to raise money for numerous charities which included the British Heart Foundation, Firefighters Charity, and Midlands Air Ambulance.
His heartbroken colleagues at West Midlands Fire Service posted a message on Twitter:
‘We are heartbroken to confirm that one of our Crew Managers, Iain Hughes, is missing after his inspiring attempt to swim the English Channel for charity.
‘Iain, based at Wednesbury fire station with our Technical Rescue Unit, began his attempt yesterday morning (June 20), accompanied by a support boat.
‘Yesterday evening, we learned that Iain had been missing for several hours.
‘In spite of search efforts involving French and Belgian military helicopters, plus navy and
police patrol boats, Iain’s whereabouts remain unknown. French authorities have confirmed the search has now ended.’
Chief Fire Officer, Wayne Brown, said: “Iain’s disappearance is unspeakably sad. We are giving Iain’s family all the support we can at this distressing time.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and everyone close to Iain. He is a highlyrespected and muchloved colleague and friend to many.”
Iain, whose 43rd birthday falls next month (July), had trained for nearly two years for his crossChannel charity swim.
Married with two children, he was raising funds for The Fire Fighters Charity, British Heart Foundation and Midlands Air Ambulance.
Iain joined West Midlands Fire Service in 1999, at the age of 19.

MEL STRIDE, the UK’s Work and Pensions secretary insisted that the UK’s food prices were rising more slowly than other countries.
Speaking on the BBC’s Radio 4 shortly before the May figures were announced, Stride said food inflation was running at roughly 20 per cent in Germany, Portugal and Sweden.
“So it’s higher than it is here,” he said.
The most recent figures for all four countries cover the year ending in April 2023, when the UK recorded higher food inflation rates than the others.
Stride would have been correct based on the April figures although Germany, Sweden and Portugal’s food inflation has fallen since March. Meanwhile the UK figures remained high.

THE UK government’s total debt rose to 100.1 per cent of its gross domestic product in May.
This was the first time that the GDPtodebt ratio had risen above 100 per cent since March 1961, with the exception of a shortlived period during the Covid19 pandemic which was later revised down owing to stronger GDP figures.
The government’s borrowing rose to £20 billion (€23.2 billion) in May owing to energy support schemes, inflationlinked benefit payments and interest payments on debt. Borrowing was £3 billion (€3.5 billion) lower than in April but £10.7 billion (€12.3 billion) more than a year ago.

BBC Verify asked Stride’s department which figures he had been referring to.
“We were told he was talking about the first three months of 2023, when UK food price inflation was 18 per cent and Sweden, Germany and Portugal were all over 20 per cent,” the BBC explained.
Executive chairman José Manuel Entrecanales Domecq admitted to shareholders that although Acciona viewed Ferrivial’s decision to decamp to the Netherlands as “legally impeccable”, the company was not contemplating a move.
“Naturally, like all options, we have studied it and our stance is that for the moment we are not interested,” Entrecanales later said to the media.
Acciona’s executive chairman did not go into details regarding the company’s decision not to move, but referred to “multiple reasons” behind the company’s refusal to emulate Ferrovial.
Takeover bid
MIAMI private equity fund I Squared Capital confirmed that, alongside TDR Capital, it was sizing up a €1 billion takeover bid for Applus Services.
Applus, a leader in the ITV vehicle inspection sector, informed Spain’s Securities and Exchange Commission (CNMV) early in May of “non binding and unsolicited expressions of interest” in acquiring it.
The UK’s 19 per cent food inflation in April exceeded the European Union’s 16.4 per cent average and was higher than in all major European economies.
Nationwide promise
NATIONWIDE, the UK’s biggest building society, will not leave any town without a local branch for at least three years.
Consumer magazine Which? estimated in May that more than 5,000 bank branches had shut since May 2015 but Nationwide’s Debbie Crosbie, who took over in June 2022, said last month that just 20 of the building society’s 600 branches had closed down during her tenure.
After Nationwide’s own survey found that 77 per cent of more than 2,000 customers “valued or depended” on physical bank branches, it extended an existing promise that no town or city where it operated would find itself without a branch.
The building society, which is owned by its 16 million customers, first made the pledge in 2019 and had previously renewed its commitment until 2024.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has affected energy prices, together with supplies of grain and fertiliser.
Self-sufficient
DECARBONISING Spain’s aviation industry will need an annual five million tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2050. A report by the PricewaterhouseCoopers consultancy (PwC) for Iberia and Vueling calculated that between 30 and 40 SAF production plants throughout Spain would cover the entire national demand. Although PwC said this would involve investing around €22 billion, Vueling’s Sustainability director Franc Sanmartí, maintained it would give Spain “the opportunity of leading by example” by achieving energy independence. Sanmartí’s Iberia counterpart Teresa Parejo also pointed out that Spain had great potential as an SAF producer, owing to its wealth of forestry, agricultural and livestock residue and waste.
This followed rumours that buyout funds Apollo and Apax and an I Squared TDR Capital consortium were interested in Applus.
I Squared has now advised the CNMV that it has still to decide whether to launch an offer.

ROLLSROYCE would rejoin the market for smaller jet engines, its chief executive Tufan Erginbilgic said.
Speaking during the Paris air show, he said Rolls Royce was ready to reenter the market to build engines for singleaisle or “narrow body” jets, although it would probably take a decade before a new opportunity arose.
When he took over in January, Erginbilgic warned that Rolls Royce would have to transform if it was to survive, although while in Paris he also said that the company was “making great progress.”

FORMER Bank of England governor, Mark Carney, told the Daily Telegraph that Brexit was to blame for soaring inflation in the UK. “We laid out in advance that this would be a negative supply shock for a period of time which would result in a weaker pound, higher inflation and weaker growth,” Carney said.

CHURCH OF ENGLAND vicars asked for a pay rise to help them cope with the cost of living crisis. More than 2,000 clergy and lay staff represented by the Unite union have submitted their first ever official pay claim, asking for a 9.5 per cent rise in their current annual stipend, which stands at £26,794 (€32,142).
Salaries don’t stand up

AVERAGE whitecollar salaries are stagnating, prompting fears of another talent exodus.
Companies risk losing their appeal to employees as the costofliving continues to rise, the latest Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) figures demonstrated.
Data provided by Bullhorn, which provides software for the staffing industry, revealed that average UK salaries for professional roles did not improve monthonmonth in May. Although this figure did increase by 1 per cent compared with the previous year, the minimal growth did not re
flect increasing inflation figures and the growing costofliving, APSCo pointed out.
The statistics also revealed the recruitment market’s continuing slowdown, despite a slight monthly increase between April and May.
SPAIN’S public debt fell by €8.8 billion to €1.526 trillion in April, 0.5 per cent less than last March, according to Bank of Spain data.
Nevertheless, this was 5.6 per cent higher than in 2022, when Spain’s debt stood at €1.445 trillion.
State indebtedness increased the most, with a 7.3 per cent year on year rise to €1.356 trillion, followed by Social Security, which increased by 7 per cent to €106.17
Permanent and contract vacancies were up a respective 9 and 6 per cent, monthonmonth, although this did not entirely compensate for the reductions noted in April, when vacancies dropped 16 per cent for permanent posts and 13

Comparing April and March figures, the State reduced its deficit by 0.5 per cent but Social Security by just 0.1 per cent.
Regional debts grew to €321.5 billion in April, a 3.5 per cent yearonyear increase but 0.22 per cent lower than last March.

per cent for contract posts compared with last year.
With regard to May, vacancies fell 28 per cent and 30 per cent for permanent and contract roles.
APSCo has warned that the tight labour market and continued skills shortages across a number of professions are causes for concern, particularly in light of stagnating pay packages.
“While hiring is dropping across the UK’s professional sectors, ongoing skills shortages are still prevalent,” pointed out APSCo’s chief executive Ann Swain.
“In fact, the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that the proportion of the workforce that has been out of work for a year or more and are, essentially inactive, has increased.
“This will only serve to reduce available talent pools for employers that are already struggling to find the skills they need,” she warned.
DESPITE a US veto on Hauwei’s networks, equipment and 5G technology that is supported by many countries, Huawei España recorded a €1.135 billion turnover in 2022. This was 57.6 per cent more than in 2021, while the company’s €29.8 million net profit showed a 49.4 per cent increase on 2021. according to accounts submitted to Spain’s Mercantile Registry.

ENDESA’S board has appointed as its vicechairman Flavio Cattaneo, who is the new chief executive of Enel, the Italian energy group which controls 70 per cent of the Spanish electricity company. Cattaneo replaced Francesco Starace after he failed to receive backing from Giorgia Meloni’s new government on completing his third threeyear term in April and resigned as CEO.

Financial services licensing - common misconceptions
1. Is it true that FX companies that are solely authorised by the FCA can operate in Spain without being authorised by the Spanish authorities?
This is a very common misconception. When the transition period ended, UKbased financial services companies lost their passporting rightsmeaning they lost the ability to operate in the European Union unless they were regulated by a relevant EU provider. If a firm is soliciting and working with clients based in Spain, they must have an appropriate EU licence.
2. A Spanish estate agent referred me to a currency provider that’s authorised by the FCA. As I’m a UK resident, will I be protected if I use them?
If you’re being referred to a currency provider offering services outside the UK, you should check that they have the appropriate licence to operate in the relevant country. If the firm is operating in Spain, they should be authorised by a relevant EU authority like the Bank of Spain FCA regulation by itself may not be enough. When using a new company, it’s important to check their licence permissions, how they protect client funds and what support you’re entitled to from a local regulator if anything goes wrong.
3. My FX company tells me they are FCA protected and do not need an EU licence as all the trading is done in the UK and their Spain office is only for marketing purposes. Is this accurate?
No, this is not the case. As above, a company that offers services in EU countries like Spain has to be licensed by a relevant EU authority, such as the Bank of Spain or Bank of Portugal. If they only have FCA authorisation they should not be offering services in Spain or other countries in the EU.
4. I have heard my FX company has an EU licence but there is nothing on their website and I can’t find any EU licence number when I search them on Google.
If your FX company has an EU licence, they should display details of who they’re authorised by and their licence reference number on their website. If they are not, contact them directly and ask them to share their licensing information with you. Any company which has the correct authorisation should be happy to share this with their clients, so if they’re unwilling or unable to provide proof of their EU licence, this may be because
they do not have one and are therefore not authorised to provide FX services in the relevant country. If they claim they are authorised but have not listed their reference number, you should always ask which EU country has licensed them and check with the local financial regulator in that country. Almost all financial regulators publish the names of companies that they have approved to operate.
5. I’ve been told that FX companies in the UK that don’t have a branch or other establishment in Spain do not need an EU licence and can still solicit referrals via estate agents and lawyers in Spain.
This is not the case. Any company soliciting referrals in Spain must have a relevant EU licence.
6. I live in Spain but have sent my funds to
an FX company that is authorised by the FCA as an Electronic Money Institution. They’re holding my funds on account while I wait for the exchange rate to improve. Am I protected by their FCA authorisation?
Technically, if you’re a Spanish resident and register with an FCA regulated company offering services in or from the UK, you are afforded the same protection by the FCA as a UK resident. However, a UK firm should not be soliciting business in Spain without an appropriate EU licence, and you should check their status.
7. I only do our clients’ legal/tax/house purchase advice and the FX company I refer to deals with the client payments. They must have all of their licences in place, they are the experts, aren’t they?
You should never assume that a financial service provider has the licences they need to operate and service clients in Spain. Always check their website to find out which organisations they’re authorised by. If you can’t find the information you need, ask them to share their licence credentials. You should also check what measures they adopt to protect client funds, what safeguarding protections are in place and what recourse you have available to you if things go wrong. It’s important to check that the bank account you are paying into is a segregated client account and protected under a trust arrangement in the event the FX company becomes insolvent or financially distressed.
8. My Spainresident clients are protected as the FCA regulates the currency provider they’re using. If clients make a complaint, the UK Institutions (ie, the Financial Ombudsman Service) will provide adequate support to my clients.
Individual clients based in Spain and the wider EU will still be able to raise complaints with, and benefit from the support of, the Financial Ombudsman Service provided the relevant FX company was providing services in or from the UK. The client’s nationality or country of residence won’t matter. Note that the FX provider must protect client funds by paying them into segregated client accounts. However, if a client uses a company without the correct EU licensing, they may not be protected if they wish to seek the support of their local incountry regulator.
Brexit changed a lot of things, including the way financial service providers can operate in Europe. To help you get to grips with what the changes mean for you, here are the answers to some of the common queries raised by the clients and partners of currency transfer providers.
EWN 29 June - 5 July 2023 euroweeklynews.com FEATURE 34 • A financial services company can only offer services in Spain if the company is regulated by a relevant EU authority, like the Bank of Spain, Bank of Portugal or Bank of Ireland. • If a Spanish estate agent or lawyer etc is referring a UK resident to a currency transfer provider, that provider can’t offer services in the EU without a relevant EU licence. • FCA authorisation/regulation does not by itself allow an FX company to do business in Spain and the wider EU. • If in doubt about a company’s licence, check it out! Always verify that they have the licence they need to work with you or your clients. You can check if a company is authorised by the Bank of Spain here: https://www.bde.es/bde/es/secciones/servicios/Particulares_y_e/Registros_de_Ent/
You can ask to see a company’s licence credentials. Check the appropriate licence is in place to operate. Advertising Feature The information below is not legal advice - if in doubt, always seek advice from a financial services solicitor. We hope this helps clear up some of the confusion around the licensing of financial services companies post-Brexit, but here are our key takeaways:
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT
OTHERS THINK IT
AT the risk of upsetting my gay friends and relatives, whom I truly do love dearly, I am going to stride purposefully out on a limb and state quite categorically that I am utterly against transgender males competing in female sporting competitions.
This statement has nothing to do with homophobia (heaven forbid), it is reached by the simple conclusion that it’s obviously and clearly unfair.
Merely because a musclebound weightlifter decides he wants to change his name to Doris and live as a woman, his choice should in no way give him / her / it / us/ them / or they, the right to compete against the fair sex in trials of strength. If this practice were allowed to prevail in all sporting competitions, most of us would never see a genetic female grace the winner’s dais again.
So, as much as I truly do sympathise with the situations that the basically male, transgender sport enthusiasts find themselves in, the idea that they have being ‘victimised’ and ‘not fair’ that they should be excluded from female
Not the norm
competitions, is in fact quite the reverse. Despite what they would have us all think, men and women on this planet are different, particularly in the physical sense. Do they truly believe that it would be ‘fair’ to pit male boxers and wrestlers, against females? Would they be prepared to take the responsibility of fatalities or serious injuries in the ring simply because they consider all with opposing views to their opinions are homophobic, or simply ‘not fair’?
No, this is the usual rhetoric from another minority, not at all happy with their lot, who are utterly insecure in their ‘differences’ and consider the only way they can be accepted is to browbeat the majority into recognising their situation as ‘the norm’. Well, it’s not the ‘norm.’ What these people (they are hopefully people!) should really be doing is accepting and taking pride in the knowledge that there are many human beings who are in fact different, and to celebrate this phenomena by working toward and per

haps introducing a separate category for transgender sportsmen and women, in much the same way as the wonderful work and effort that has resulted in the worldwide success of those find themselves physically impaired. I didn’t hear those marvellous people whinging and whining about their infirmities. Their para Olympics and competitions are magnificent and a sparkling example of what can be overcome by the human spirit.
So I suggest that all those transgender sports people who figure themselves hard done by and put upon, to stop blaming the majority and come up with some positive way of improving their lot. What a great event something like that could actually be. ‘The Transgender Games.’
Book me in on the front row and stop being such pathetic degenerating and utterly unacceptable drags. Keep the faith. Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com expatradioscotland.com Mon. and Frid. 1pm till 4.
IT seems rather strange that as Spain assumes, with much fanfare, the Presidency of the Council of the European Union until the end of 2023, that the current government may have to hand over the reigns of power to another party.
As previously observed in this paper, whilst it was clear that there would have to be a general election by December, the decision to call the election early and on July 23 did come as something of a surprise.
Local and some Provincial elections held in May saw some movement towards the more right wing parties and away from the left, but it wasn’t a total debacle for the ruling coalition and clearly President Pedro Sánchez thinks that he has a chance of holding on.
The fact that the Podemos Party with its supposed links with Iran and Venezuela is being replaced by the new party Sumar created by the popular Minister of Labour Yolanda Díaz could give some confidence to voters, especially as on the other side, Vox continues to utter some fairly unpopular statements concerning domestic violence for example.
Despite the fact that Spain is awash with EU money, much of which should be repaid at some time, many businesses have suffered from a string of new laws which make it more difficult to hire and fire or indeed to keep hard earned profits.
There will be a clear polarisation between the political parties and their supporters and whilst businesses generally will hope for the Partido Popular to take control, the hard right or the hard left (who still exist) may actually tip the balance one way or the other.
Leapy Lee’s opinions are his own and are not necessarily representative of those of the publishers, advertisers or sponsors.

Gousto also found that few people knew that olives

SLIMMERS who lose weight rapidly thanks to semaglutide medication must later contend with the flab.
Many experience what they call the ‘Ozempic bum’ with backsides they compare to a pancake. Videos highlighting the sideeffect abound on social media but Dr Simon Cork, a senior Physiology lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, explained this demonstrated the efficacy of the semaglutide drugs.
“The buttocks are an area where we deposit excess fat,” he said.
“So, as they lose weight some people will see this come off their buttocks faster than elsewhere.”
Woman’s best friend
TRISHA ALLISON, 50, from Wilford (Nottingham) credits her dog Luna with saving her life. One day Luna, a twoyearold colliegreyhound
cross repeatedly sniffed and nudged at Trisha’s chest before lying next to her, something she rarely does.
Aware of a pain shortly afterwards, she examined her breast and discovered “something wasn’t right,” she told the UK media.
Visits to her GP and hospital confirmed that she had breast cancer, and Trisha who has now undergone surgery calls Luna her “little lifesaver.”
Few doctors would con
tradict her as research has shown that thanks to their acute sense of smell, dogs can detect the markers of breast, colorectal, lung, and other cancers.
In a lather
WHETHER you should wash your hair daily depends on texture and whether it is oily or processed.
Lifestyle and age also play a large part.
Shampooing each day is the best option for people with oilier scalps where accumulated sebum makes their hair limp and greasy, said dermatologist Dr Murad Alam. Fine hair also becomes greasy more quickly, because there is less hair to absorb the oil, also making a daily wash advisable, he said.

How much is too much?
PROTEIN obtained from food is essential for health but requirements vary, depending on a person’s age, activity levels and weight.
Most should aim for between 1.2 and 1.6 grammes of protein for every kilo of body weight per day.
Consuming more than two grammes could lead to problems involving the digestive system, blood vessels and kidneys, doctors warn, although some suggest that people may need more as they age.
A 2016 study concluded that the elderly should ideally consume between 1.2 and two grammesor even higher per kilo of body weight daily, to prevent agerelated muscle loss.
Magnificent magnesium
Linda Hall
DIETITIAN Shyla Cadogan said that she would choose magnesium if she were allowed only one supplement.
Research shows that most people fail to get enough of this vital nutrient, Cadogan told StudyFinds, a journal which features research studies.
An absence of magnesium in the diet can have negative health consequences like heart disease, deteriorating bone health, and depression.
When it is present, magnesium assists several vital processes that include creating energy, repairing DNA, helping muscles contract and relax, and regulating neurotransmitters.
The mineral is found naturally in foods like dark chocolate, nuts, leafy greens, whole grains, lentils, and fatty fish.

Beat the flushes
HOT FLUSHES are bad at the best of times but worse when temperatures soar.
Dr Naomi Potter, founder of Menopause Care and coauthor with Davina McCall of best seller, Menopausing, calculates that 80 per cent of women going through the menopause will experience hot flushes at some time.
Don’t forget, Dr Potter said, to carry a fan and water in an insulated bottle while out walking or using public transport this summer.
Also, stick to linen and cotton clothing, plus big knickers in a natural fibre.

DARK CHOCOLATE: Contains important mineral, magnesium.
THE world underwent a profound transformation in the aftermath of the Covid19 pandemic. The necessity of staying at home compelled individuals to explore the realm of remote work and contemplate the possibilities of conducting their professional duties from the comfort of their own homes, wherever those homes may be located across the globe.
Consequently, the working landscape experienced a significant shift, leading to an increasing number of people embracing remote work. As of 2023, remote working has emerged as a desirable option, enabling individuals to reside in the country of their choosing while pursuing their dream careers. The prerequisites for remote work are rather simple: a reliable laptop and a stable WiFi connection.
In light of this, the website Moving to Spain (www.mov ingtospain.com) undertook a comprehensive analysis to determine the best European countries for remote workers. Various factors were taken into account, including the quality of internet connectivity, the availability of digital nomad

Spanish plan to fight forest fires 2023
EVERY year as summers get hotter so there are an increasing number of forest fires and the Spanish government plans to do something about both preventing and tackling them.
visas, healthcare provisions, happiness indices, and cost of living, among others. Using these data a ‘remote worker score’ was calculated, which served as the basis for their report.
Excitingly, Spain claims the fourth position on the list, boasting a commendable score of 6.76. One of Spain’s standout attributes is its ranking within the top three for internet download speed, an indispensable requirement for any digital professional. In first place is Norway, a country known for its stunning natural
beauty, and holds the title of ‘happiest country in Europe’.
A closer look at Spain itself, reveals that Malaga is among the top four cities for remote workers, with a score of 5.18 out of 10. Malaga is celebrated for its relatively low cost of living, and its residents will be pleased to learn it has been recognised as the third safest city in Spain.
Taking the lead are Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, sharing first place with a score of 6.67 points. In second place was Granada, with a score of 5.93.
According to Minister of the Interior, Fernando GrandeMarlaska who announced the programme on June 20, “We are no longer talking about estimates or predictive models, we are talking about a reality that has demonstrated its terrible destructive potential for our peoples, fields, cities, livestock and farms and on the natural heritage of the different regions of Spain.”
Last year, a number of forest fires took out more than 300,000 hectares of forest, seeing the evacuation of some 30,000 people, the loss of four lives and a huge amount of property.
As Spain is such a large and relatively under populated country flash fires can take some time to discover and
then firefighters have difficulty in reaching them, but as the number of such fires has trebled in the past 10 years, possibly made worse by climate change, the trend must be reversed.
Preparations began in April rather than waiting until June and the government is working closely with the autonomous communities to ensure all sides work together to fight the outbreak of fire anywhere in the country.
It is not just firefighters who are involved. Members of the Guardia Civil’s Seprona division as well as National Police, Civil Protection and
the Ministry of Defence are working together to get the right equipment to the right place as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately, in today’s fast reacting climate, whilst fire is a major hazard in the summer, all plans need to be adaptable to take into account the possibility of earthquake, tidal waves, flood, heavy snowfall and even nuclear or biological disaster. Funds will be made available to compensate individuals and businesses affected by fire as well as councils who have to face additional expenses in order to combat them or clear up after.

Best for observing dolphins
A TOWN on the west coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands has been named as one of the top locations in the world to observe dolphins. According to analysts from the travel website booking.com, Acantilado de los Gigantes in Santiago del Teide municipality is one of the six best places to see these beautiful cetaceans in their natural habitat.
Watching dolphins or whales is not one of the easiest tasks in the world. It is not impossible, but due to their constant migratory movements, it can prove difficult. Pollution and marine traffic also add to the
problem.
As indicated in the Royal Decree that was approved in 2007, it is forbidden to approach within 60 metres of this species in Spain.
There are strict protection measures surrounding these creatures with fines for those who might break the law, which even includes throwing food to eat or objects for dolphins to play with.
The website explains how inflatable boats transport tourists from the port of Los Gigantes to get very close to the fauna that lives under the sea and recommends that watching dolphins should be on everybody’s
wish list.
Dolphins often swim alongside the boats and interact with humans, displaying a docile and friendly nature.
Newquay in Cornwall in the UK was also in the top six places to see dolphins. The largest group of dolphins in the United Kingdom inhabits the waters off the rugged Cornish coastline.
Trips depart from the Newquay to Cardigan Bay, where you can even go whale watching. Plenty of bottlenose dolphins and other marine wildlife, including grey seals, can usually be spotted in this location.

OUIGO, the French railway operator in Spain has launched a promotion aimed at travellers aged over 30, offering them a 20 per cent discount on various routes.
The destinations with discounted tickets include Madrid, Zaragoza, Tarragona, Barcelona, Valencia, Albacete and Alicante.
As shown on the Ouigo website, this offer by the lowcost highspeed train operator will be available between July 31 and September 2.
It is added to the already existing discounts for young people up to 30 years of age, promoted by the government, in which Ouigo participates.
A total of 50,000 discounts have been made available by the company. They are on sale until June 30 through the Ouigo website and mobile application.
To benefit from this discount, all that a prospective passenger has to do is use the promotional code VIEJOVEN. These discounts will be applied to the amount of the ticket in roundtrip reservations with a minimum value of €40.
Ouigo launches new promotion
With this promotion called ‘Viejóven’, the company aims to facilitate summer travel by highspeed train for people over 30 years of age. Its objective is to promote a more sustainable means of transport and reduce travel by other more polluting means, such as aeroplanes and cars.
Ouigo intends to show its
commitment to young people, a profile that can be affected by rising prices, while also gaining other travellers who want to make summer getaways. These discounts also contribute to the modal shift towards more sustainable options in Spain.
These latest offers add to Ouigo’s long history of launch
ing promotions during periods of high demand, such as Fallas and Christmas.
Recently, Ouigo requested a capacity study from Adif with the aim of starting operations in 2024 on the lines that connect Valladolid, Segovia, Madrid, Albacete, Alicante, Madrid, Elche, and Murcia.
THE government announced on Tuesday June 27 the extension of antieviction measures while discontinuing the extra extension of rents. These measures were initially implemented during the Covid 19 pandemic and have now been prolonged through a royal decree law.
The government aims to address housing, transportation, tax, and energy price concerns arising from both the pandemic and the inflationary crisis linked to the war in Ukraine. This lastminute extension will also incorporate additional measures, including tax rebates for electric vehicle purchases.
Government safeguards
Starting from July 1, tenants will no longer be able to extend their expiring contracts by six months. Since March 2020, tenants whose rental contracts had expired were granted a sixmonth extension due to the challenges posed by the lockdowns. This extension allowed tenants extra time to find a new home without facing changes in rent prices or other lease conditions.
Despite the discontinuation of rent extensions, the government has agreed to extend the anti
eviction measures implemented during the pandemic. These measures ensure that vulnerable households are protected from eviction if they can demonstrate economic vulnerability and the inability to find alternative housing.
The government justifies the extension of anti eviction measures because the Law on the Right to Housing, passed in May, has not yet taken effect. This law, which aligns with the spirit of the Covid19 antieviction measures, requires regional authorities to establish mediation and arbitration services to assist families facing eviction.

OceanGate LETTERS
I think that this was a disaster waiting to happen, all in the pursuit of financial profit.
I was born in Southampton and, as such, I feel that I have a personal link with Titanic. You can’t avoid it there, the museum, the monument, the history, etc.
I get the fascination, but $250,000 to visit what is tantamount to a stranger’s grave is verging on morbidity. If OceanGate OFFERED me $250,000 to go down in the submersible, my answer would be ‘Absolutely not!’, and I am not a wealthy person.
Over 1,500 people died on an ‘unsinkable’ ship. Was there not a lesson to be learned there somewhere?
Justification on the basis of scientific research is a nonsense, it’s all about financial gain.
There were aIso expert concerns, which appear to have been ignored, in 2018.
The dangerous circumstances, and common sense, would indicate that there would be little chance of an effective Plan B, should there be a serious malfunction.
I hope that OceanGate are funding the millions of dollars that the rescue attempt is costing, and that they face some sort of legal challenge.
I also hope that the passengers’ prayers are answered, but there were millionaires on Titanic as well, which was also regarded as ‘rock solid’, to quote OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush’s own words.

Scotland stats
Hiya,
I always enjoy reading your column as one of the first things to do when we arrive back in Calahonda and pick up a paper.
Interesting stats on Scotland that I didn’t know but of course, I assumed they’d be living like royalty while the kids are leaving school half educated, but Queen Nicola is happy because violent rapists now have the choice to be gaoled in a women’s prison, and that is so much more important than the four x the usual rate of post natal deaths and twice the usual rate of spontaneous abortions.
Well Salmond was bad, Sturgeon was
worse, but wait for Humza Crooked Yousaf!
He’ll be the Scots equivalent of Sheffield’s Magid Magid, 100 per cent Crook, mayor of Sheffield, (which he did more damage to than the Luftwaffe) and more recent Member of The European Parliament. ♂
Keep well.
Queen Nicola has to get out the uniform and go back to her old job.

Rowdy travel
Loved your article on Ryanair’s ban on taking alcohol on board, having just had a similar experience on a BA flight. Yes, why the hell were they allowed on board in the first place, one could hardly stand, AND the group being served more on board?
We can rant on trying to find reasons, probably the cost of unloading all the baggage whilst on the runway always financial, however I do take issue with the last sentence ‘not everyone likes to fly with drunken lads’. Well my experience was not even with lasses, five 40year old women, absolutely embarrassing. I used my ‘How was your flight?’ email and got a reasonable response from BA. Thank you Euro Weekly News for highlighting this ever increasing problem.

Poor people
I have just spent a week in the UK to attend the christening of my grandson.
I have never experienced anything so bad in my life, there were scores of people, British people, begging. Why do our own citizens have to beg, sleep rough, have very little or no sanitation available whilst we give accommodation, money, mobile phones to thousands of immigrants.
What I witnessed has made me feel for these poor people. I have to say a succession of governments have given the United Kingdom away.
If the country was in this state in 1944 I doubt you would have had thousands of British soldiers running into a wall of German bullets, these soldiers gave their lives for Great Britain, they would not do it today because there is nothing left to save. Where I live you need an income or you simply get sent home, no handouts, they look after their own first. I am not racist in the slightest, but I think the government has no idea what the average British people think. A disgusted expat living abroad.

MX-5 - definition of a sports car
ROAD TEST
by Mark Slack
HOW many true, affordable sports cars are on sale at the moment? If
your definition of a sports car is a two seater with folding roof, affordable is a debatable point given prices at the moment, then your choice is quite limited. One of the most
recognisable and unar guable examples of a sports car is Maz da’s MX
Launched over 30 years ago a contin uous se ries of updates and up grades have not dimmed the MX 5’s ability to produce a fun drive despite not be ing an outright performance machine. Two options are on offer, the full convertible with fabric roof or the RF which is a fully electric retractable hard top and looks more like a targa top once the magic of the powered roof has been completed. Prices start from €30,046/£25,825 for the full convertible, €32,257/£27,725 for the RF, and there are 1.5 and 2.0 litre petrol engines
gears.
Standard fare on the lead in Prime Line RF model includes Apple Car Play and Android Auto, heated seats, powered and heated door mirrors, LED headlights, air conditioning, pushbutton start, navigation, tyre pressure monitoring system, hill launch assist and cruise control. All Mazda MX 5 models are a snug fit in the cabin, but the finish and build quality is excel
gine produces a 6.8 second sprint to the benchmark 62 mph and on to a maximum of 137 mph (racetrack only of course).
Mated to Mazda’s slick six speed manual gearbox, limited slip differential and rear wheel drive, it makes for entertaining motoring on twisting cross country roads. The sports suspension is a tad on the firm side over some of our rougher roads, but generally
draws a nice line between comfort and performance.
Additions to the standard equipment include Nappa leather trim, adaptive LED headlights, climate control, reversing camera and sensors, auto lights and wipers, auto dimming rear view mirror and 17” alloys. Priced at €40,154/£34,510 this isn’t a cheap sports car, but it’s a very grown up sports car and one which answers those who want a more refined open aired solution to fun motoring.
Depending on your interpretation, the market for true sports cars is pretty small, many that are billed as such are more sports coupes, so if you are in the market for some sports car fun then Mazda’s MX 5 RF might just be one of the only ways to find it.

Guipuzcoa coaching boom
THE Premier League has witnessed a unique phenomenon with the influx of coaches from Spain’s smallest province, Guipuzcoa from the Basque Country. With the recent ap pointment of Andoni Iraola as Bournemouth’s coach, a total of four out of the 20 coaches in the English league now hail from this ex traordinary region. This statisti cal challenge raises questions and highlights the exceptional footballing lineage of Guipuzcoa.
Iraola joins the illustrious list of Spanish coaches in the world’s top league, alongside Mikel Arteta (Arsenal), Unai Emery (Aston Villa), and Julen Lopetegui (Wolverhampton). What sets these coaches apart is that, except for Pep Guardiola, they all originate from Guipuzcoa. This province, covering a mere 2,000 square kilometres and inhabited by just 726,000 people, constitutes only 1.52 per cent of the Spanish population. Yet, despite its small
size, Guipuzcoa has emerged as a footballing heavyweight.
The sporting tradition of Guipuzcoa is wellestablished, with Real Sociedad and Real Unión de Irún playing pivotal roles in the creation of the Spanish League in 1928.
Additionally, the incredible story of Eibar, a team from a town with a population of 27,000, defies the odds and captivates football enthusiasts. The Premier League is not the sole destination for Guipuzcoan coaches. Xabi Alonso has also ventured to Germany, joining Bayer Leverkusen last year.
The fact that 80 per cent of these coaches originate from Guipuzcoa defies statistical norms but further enhances the mystery and allure surrounding this phenomenon. Guipuzcoa’s footballing legacy, from talented players to accomplished coaches, continues to captivate and amaze the football world.

Alcaraz regains World No1 spot Tributes pour in
CRAIG BROWN CBE, arguably one of the greatest football managers of all time, passed away on Monday, June 26, at the age of 82.
His 15year spell as coach of the Scottish national men’s football team won Brown legendary status among the nation’s fans.
In 1996 he guided the Tartan Army to the finals of the Euros. Two years later the Scots reached the World Cup finals in France. That was the last time the country qualified for football’s biggest tournament.
“To manage your country is the ultimate job in management. If you manage your country successfully and qualify for tournaments, that’s even better,” he once said, as reported by a news source.
“I hope to be a guy they say was fair and honest and upright and did his very best,” he responded once when asked how he would like to be remembered and what his legacy would be.
He added: “Craig Brown the manager? Well, he was fortunate enough to manage good teams. I’m the luckiest guy in Scottish football, I mean it sincerely.”
The Scottish national team tweeted: “A true Scotland legend. Our thoughts are with Craig’s loved ones at this sad time.”
Brown was a player before going into management.
Prior to going into management, Brown played for Glasgow Rangers. His time was limited though after he suffered a serious knee injury. He did manage short spells with both Dundee and Falkirk after that.
Motherwell offered him the job of assistant manager before he finally took over as boss at Clyde in 1977. Brown subsequently won a brace of Division Two titles with them.
The Troonborn Brown also took charge of Aberdeen. In a tweet, the club wrote today: “Everyone at Aberdeen FC is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved former manager, director and club ambassador, Craig Brown.”
CARLOS ALCARAZ is once again the world’s No. 1 tennis star after beating Australia’s Álex de Miñaur in the Queen’s ATP 500 final.
The 20yearold from Murcia recovered the top spot after an impressive straightsets win on Sunday, June 25, taking both sets by a score of 64.
“So many legends have won here and to see my name surrounded by so many great champions is amazing,” Alcaraz said in his postmatch interview.
He added: “I started the tournament not very well, especially my movement on the grass, but it’s been an amazing week.”
De Minaur graciously accepted the loss in his interview after the match, commenting: “It’s been a great week, we were close but wasn’t able to get it done today.”
After losing to Novak Djokovic in the French Open final at Roland Garros, the young Spaniard dropped into second spot in the rankings.
As a result of Sunday’s impressive win over the 24yearold world No 18, Alcaraz will be the No. 1 seed when Wimbledon kicks off on Monday July 3. Alcaraz will definitely be a major contender to take the Serb’s crown.
He has already racked up five titles this season and is looking like a real force to
be reckoned with. This was only his third tournament on grass and his first victory on a grass court.
Lleyton Hewitt was the last Australian to win at London’s Queen’s Club, lifting the trophy in 2006. On his way to Sunday’s final, he knocked out Britain’s former world No1, Andy Murray, in the first round.
Despite the scoreline, De Minaur’s pace and agility really placed Alcaraz under pressure and he had to be on top of his game to win this match.
Alcaraz pulled out the big shots just when they were needed. He broke the Australian’s serve in both sets and in the first set, produced a stunning ace that was measured at an incredible 137mph.
