THIS IS TOWN IN NATURE
A burger spot down on the corner. UF Health and the Y just up the street. Parks and trails around every bend. And trees ... well, everywhere. You could say that Wildlight is more than a place to have a home, it’s a place to truly live.
Riverside Homes and Pulte Homes have outdone themselves here, offering expansive front porches, picture-perfect kitchens and airy open space, for starters. And now Del Webb has joined the mix—with luxurious residences set within a gated 55+ community, complete with exclusive resort-style amenities (and 9 brand-new models to tour). And for those wondering about our location? We’re conveniently situated in what we like to say is the center of it all, with the comfort of Amelia Island and the culture of Jacksonville within easy reach. Intrigued? Come see.
Homes priced from the $400s.

The Best Places to Live
With tens of thousands of master-planned communities in America, you might ask, how do you come up with a list of America’s 100 Best Places to Live? The answer is that there is no one definitive list, but we’ve researched communities from our readers’ most-desired areas based on survey results. Each year we survey our readers to determine the most popular destinations and amenities. The destinations featured in this special issue are representative of those desires.
Most of our readers are looking to escape high taxes and find a better climate and quality of life. Whether you would like to move to the mountains or the coast or even internationally, the communities in this issue should help give you ideas of where you might want to live.
The housing market has exploded over the past two years, and inventory levels remain at all-time lows. As many of our readers are 18 to 24 months from relocating, the real estate market is sure to change again. But now is the perfect time to decide where you would like to live. Even if you are a year or more away from making the move, it might be a good time to start with your home plans or getting under contract as the average time to build a new home is between nine to 15 months. If you are looking to purchase an existing home, you might still need to place bids on multiple properties. The market does show signs of softening with the increasing interest rates, but demand is still very high. However, the most important thing to think about is improving your quality of life.
It is our hope that you will read about these location and the lives of people who have relocated and that you will get out and visit these amazing cities and masterplanned developments to find your ideal life.

What are Ideal-LIVING readers looking for?
The past few years have generated record-breaking sales across the U.S. and beyond. Over 30,000 Ideal-LIVING readers relocated in 2021, according to the U.S. Postal Service Change of Address, mainly seeking lower taxes and warmer weather. Each year Ideal-LIVING surveys our readers, and we like to share those results with you so you can see what others are looking for. We compared our results with the results from the 2021 United VanLines Study and found a lot of similarities, especially where people are moving from and where they are moving to.
Of the readers we surveyed, close to 60% said they are just beginning their search, and 67% percent said they would not relocate before they retire. And, as usual, proximity to quality health care is of primary importance. Another thing that has not changed is their desire for walking trails, fitness centers, and shopping and dining experiences. Retirees desire a healthy lifestyle. They want to spend their time exercising
socializing.

The Carolinas
It’s easy to see why retirees are flocking to the Carolinas. The kind of blue skies that people write songs about. World-class universities and medical care. Nascar races and fierce basketball rivalries. All sorts of landscapes from mountainous to beachy. Life can’t get any better than this. Charlotte and the Research Triangle are centers of innovation, and Wilmington and Charleston are historical coastal cities with offerings like walking tours, festivals, boutique shops, and farmers markets. Plus, there are so many quaint small towns to discover. Wherever you choose to explore, you’re sure to experience a warm, welcoming atmosphere full of good food, beautiful scenery, and southern charm. Sunrise to sunset, the Carolinas are just simply a beautiful place to be.

North Carolina has added nearly 900,000 new residents over the past decade. About 70 percent of that total growth has been from people moving in from other states, including retirees and working families who’ve found new homes and an active lifestyle in master-planned communities from the mountains to the sea.

Resources and Recreation
Farm-to-Table Water Sports Hiking + Biking
Boating, kayaking, and fishing are major outdoor recreations in North Carolina. In addition to 320 miles of Atlantic Ocean shoreline and 12,000+ miles of estuary coastline with saltwater sounds and bays, the state has more than 37,000 miles of rivers and streams plus 1,500 lakes of 10 acres or larger.
Well over 600 miles of hiking trails meander through North Carolina’s 41 state parks alone, plus the 1,175mile Mountains-to-Sea Trail that traverses the entire state and a 311-mile section of the Appalachian Trail in the western mountains. North Carolina is also home to about 550 golf courses.
Climate
There are around 50,000 farms in North Carolina, the majority of which are relatively small at less than 200 acres. The state is among among the nation’s leading producers of sweet potatoes, soybeans, and cotton, as well pigs, chickens, and turkeys. With orchards, vineyards, and vegetable fields throughout the state, local farmers markets are open for business nearly every week of the year.
The climate in North Carolina varies with its diverse topography, which ranges from oceanfront barrier islands in the east to mountain peaks as high as 6,600 feet above sea level in the west. Coastal areas have breezy summer highs around 90º, with winter lows rarely below freezing. The mid-state Piedmont region can actually be a bit warmer in the summer months and may see a few inches of snow in the winter. Ski resorts in the western mountains welcome about four inches of winter snowfall per month, while summer days are comfortably cool and the fall colors are spectacular.

Research Triangle
The Research Triangle is North Carolina’s center of technological innovation and cultural-arts attractions like The Carolina Theater. The flagship campuses for three major institutions of higher learning give the region its distinctive character: the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, Duke University in Durham, and North Carolina State University in the capital city of Raleigh. Both Duke and UNC have renowned medical schools and research centers, while the UNC Hospitals network has toprated treatment facilities throughout the state.
Piedmont Triad
The Piedmont Triad area includes the cities of High Point, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem and is home to Wake Forest University and its affiliated Baptist Medical Center. Among the region’s leading cultural sites are the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, the world’s largest open-air habitat at the North Carolina Zoo, and the International Civil Rights Center and Museum. Another area highlight is Mount Airy, actor Andy Griffith’s hometown and inspiration for the fictional setting of Mayberry.
Charlotte
Charlotte is North Carolina’s largest city, with more than 2.5 million residents in the greater metropolitan area. The “Queen City” is the nation’s second-largest banking center, with headquarters for Bank of America, Truist Financial, and Wells Fargo, as well as corporate giants like Honeywell, Lowe’s, and Duke Energy. The city is also home to professional sports franchises in the NFL and NBA, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and the Billy Graham Library, as well as more than a dozen college campuses and a broad range of cultural centers. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is a major travel hub, and the city’s unique LYNX urban light-rail network is currently over 20 miles long and expanding every year.
The Sandhills
The Sandhills Region of the North Carolina Piedmont is home to the towns of Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen. Set along U.S. Highway 1 and Amtrak’s primary north-south rail line, the area has been a popular vacation destination for more than 100 years with spas, antique shops, horse farms, and 40+ championship golf courses at destinations like Pinehurst Resort, Pine Needles, and Mid Pines.
“This is chapter two in life. And, when you meet other people in chapter two, everyone just seems happy. No one cares what you did in your old life; nobody cares what you do now. They just want to get together and have fun. You have to be careful because you meet too many people. Sometimes you might feel like you need to take a break from retirement, because it's so busy. The neighbors want to invite your over; there are bonfires on the beach and pickleball. Then people are saying, 'Let's meet at the club for dinner,' or 'What are you doing on Saturday?' Everybody is in a good mood. Everybody is just happy and goes with the flow here in St. James.”

Blue Ridge Mountains
The Blue Ridge Parkway twists and turns for more than 250 miles through the most scenic highlands in the western North Carolina mountains. It’s a bucket-list adventure that everyone can enjoy from the comfort of their vehicle on a two-lane road with a maximum speed of 45 mph. Along the way are dozens of overlook stops to enjoy a picnic lunch or just admire the sweeping views. Popular sites like Grandfather Mountain, Linville Falls, and Mount Mitchell offer hiking trails to stretch your legs. Highland towns just off the Parkway feature lodge-style accommodations, pick-your-own apple orchards, wineries to sample the local vintage, and folk-art centers with unique crafts and bluegrass music concerts. Portions of the road are closed during the winter, but a Blue Ridge Parkway trip is unforgettable in every other season, especially when the autumn colors are at their glorious peak.
"Keith and I wanted to get closer to retirement and build our dream home, even though Keith is still working. I knew that I wanted to be closer to the beach. The beach is my happy place. We decided that 30 miles inland was perfect for us. We moved from Greensboro, NC, in 2014. River Landing is a lovely mix of young families and retirees. I’ve never lived in a planned development before, so having this pristine, beautifully-landscaped community is just beautiful. I play pickleball, walk, or bike ride every day. There is so much socially going on that you can pick and choose. You can just walk up to the club if you want to see people. But I don’t mind quiet time. I live in a small town, but if we need something more, we can get to Wilmington within 35 to 40 minutes, and I love the proximity to all the small towns around. It’s just charming.”

South Carolina has a well-deserved reputation as a top-tier retirement destination. Still, an increasing number of younger workers and their families are also among new residents in the state’s many multi-generational communities.
Recent statistical summaries rank South Carolina as the 9th fastest-growing state by population. In terms of business growth during the same period, South Carolina ranks third in the nation, with noteworthy increases in the manufacturing, real estate, health care, and professional services sectors.
Climate
The Upstate region of South Carolina is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, so a few light snowfall events in winter are not unexpected. Spring and summer days are generally cooler and dryer than in the rest of the state, with beautiful highland colors on display in the fall. The Midlands and Coastal areas can be warm and humid from May through mid-September, with comfortable daytime temperatures during the balance of the year and very few frosty winter nights.

"I tell people it’s like when you go to college. Everyone there is from somewhere else and is eager to meet new people. It’s really nice to see new people who step right into living here and being a part of Hampton Hall. This is a very friendly neighborhood. At bocce the other night, we laughed at the waves people have. There’s the ‘Hey, I don’t know you, but I’m waving anyway,’ and then there’s the ‘Hey, I know you with the bigger wrist wave.’
My husband I have moved about 10 to 12 times over the years for our careers, but nothing comes close to this. We are always saying, ‘I can’t believe we live here. I can’t believe we live in paradise.’ If you were to come and visit Hampton Hall, the first thing you would fall in love with is the beauty. When you come into the neighborhood, you come over the bridge with a breathtaking view of the golf course. To prepare for an upcoming game night, I’ve been at different events getting people to fill out surveys about what they like about Hampton Hall. Almost 70% responded with ‘the people,’ the rest were split between ‘the beauty’ and ‘the amenities,’ and a few people summed it up best with ‘everything.’”
Jill Friedman, Hampton Hall, Bluffton, SC
Lakes and Rivers
The Midlands region has four of the South’s largest man-made lakes—Moultrie, Marion, Murray, and Thurmond—covering nearly 300,000 total acres for boating and fishing for record-size bream and catfish. The Upstate lakes of Keowee, Jocassee, and Hartwell are smaller reservoirs but equally renowned for their bass- and trout-fishing spots. These clean freshwater bodies have countless forested coves to be explored by paddlers, who can also glide for 66 unobstructed miles on the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail in the Lowcountry.
Hiker's Heaven
South Carolina is a walker’s paradise in every season, starting with the unique urban trails in the downtown areas of both Greenville and Charleston. Columbia has its network of riverside paths for shady strolling, plus a 2.4-mile elevated boardwalk through the primeval forests in nearby Congaree National Park. More vigorous hikers can rise to the challenge of the Upstate’s 77-mile Foothills Trail with its inclines and waterfalls or choose one of the 26 separate passages on the 500-mile Palmetto Trail that runs from mountain peaks to the Atlantic shoreline.
Golf Destination
South Carolina is home to more than 350 golf courses that are open for play year round. Many of those are resort and semi-private layouts, including 80+ in the Grand Strand region with award-winners like Tidewater, Caledonia, and TPC Myrtle Beach. Down the coast in The Lowcountry are famous championship hosts like Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course and Sea Pines‘ Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island. That seaside region also features luxury private golf communities set along wetlands and tidal estuaries, while their Upstate counterparts offer highland layouts overlooking scenic freshwater lakes.

Endless Education Fresh from the Farm
The University of Georgia has its main campus in Athens and 26 satellite campuses throughout the state. Georgia Tech in Atlanta features worldclass science and engineering schools, while the state's expanding technical college system has more than 20 locations. At these and all other public institutions in the state, Georgia resident seniors can take classes for free, earn credits toward an undergraduate degree, and even enroll in a master's program. Many private colleges also offer reduced-fee courses, no-cost class auditing, and educational seminars that welcome local residents of all ages.
Georgia is the largest state by size east of the Mississippi River and has nearly 10 million acres of farmland. The leading national producer of pecans, peanuts, and Vidalia onions, the state is also a significant grower of fruits like peaches, blueberries, cantaloupes, and watermelons, as well as vegetables like cabbages, cucumbers, snap beans, and squash. All are available in season at fresh-picked farmers markets throughout the state and on creative menus at award-winning restaurants from Savannah to Atlanta.
Year-round Celebrations
Every month in Georgia, there are fairs, festivals, and community celebrations somewhere in the state's 159 counties. Among the most popular in the spring are the International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon and the 100-year-old Thomasville Rose Show and Festival. Late summer events include the Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee, the Hot Air Balloon Glow Festival at Callaway Resort & Gardens, and Midtown Music Festival in Atlanta's Piedmont Park. In addition to Georgia fall celebrations like Oktoberfest in the Bavarian-themed town of Helen and the Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival, Savannah alone hosts major annual events dedicated to films, books, music, food, and wine, plus the South's biggest St. Patrick's Day Festival.
Most of Georgia is considered to be a subtropical region, especially along the Atlantic coast from Savannah to St. Marys. The summer months there can be warm and humid, although often cooled a bit by the offshore ocean breezes. The rest of the year, throughout most of the state, is perfect for outdoor recreational activities, generally sunny and dry in the fall with spring showers that farmers and gardeners welcome. With the exception of the mostly cooler highland counties in the northern part of the state, Georgia receives very little snowfall in winter.

An Enjoyable Environment
The Sea Islands of Georgia are a diverse collection of Atlantic Ocean barrier islands that shelter 137 of the most beautiful miles on the intracoastal waterway. The north-to-south route begins with Tybee Island, a long-time favorite destination for Savannah day-trippers and vacationing families who enjoy its historic sites and casual vibe. Ossabaw and Sapelo are undeveloped islands that are only accessible by boat and the respective homes of a 9,000-acre nature preserve and traditional Gullah-Geechee communities. St. Simons and Sea Island feature world-class oceanfront resorts and tournament-host golf clubs. At the same time, Jekyll Island is a state-owned vacation destination with 20 miles of bike paths, a huge water-fun park, and elegant Jekyll Island Club accommodations.
SAVANNAH

Savannah is Georgia's historic port city, one of the South's most popular vacation destinations and a top-ranked "Best Place to Retire," according to several recent surveys. For visitors and residents alike, it's among the most walkable cities in America, with a network of 24 downtown garden parks that include Chippewa Square and its iconic Forest Gump bench. Between the moss-draped oaks in the 100-acre Bonaventure Cemetery and the open-air City Market with fresh local produce and unique crafts, there are sidewalk art shows, historic sites, flowery gardens, and specialty shops to browse. After a tour of the three signature Telfair Museums or a new exhibition at the Savannah College of Art & Design, fine-dining options include dozens of downtown restaurants that feature eclectic menus and fresh seafood specialties. Residents in upscale communities on nearby Skidaway Island and along the Savannah River also enjoy top-rated health care at Memorial Health University Medical Center and the Candler/St. Joseph's Hospital network.
ST. MARYS Riverside Gateway
The Town of St. Marys is the ferry port "Gateway to Cumberland Island," the southernmost of the Georgia Sea Islands and an early 20th-century playground of the rich and famous. In addition to historic mansions and gardens, visitors can explore Cumberland's 17 miles of pristine oceanfront. Back in town, the St. Marys Historic District covers the entire revitalized downtown area, which features historic sites, riverfront parks, bed-and-breakfast inns, daily-catch seafood restaurants, and attractions that include the St. Marys Submarine Museum. GEORGIA LAKES
Freshwater Escapes
Georgia boasts nearly two dozen major recreational lakes, and some of the best are in North Georgia. Lake Lanier, located just north of Atlanta, is Georgia's largest lake that covers 39,000 acres and features nearly 700 miles of shoreline. Residents in Lanier's surrounding resort and retirement communities enjoy boating, kayaking, fishing, and picnics at 50 forested parks, about half of which have sandy beaches for sunning and swimming. Oconee and Sinclair are sister lakes east of Atlanta with a combined 400+ miles of shoreline, luxury retirement communities, world-class golf courses, and a destination resort with five-star restaurants and spas. Lake Rabun and Tallulah Falls Lake enjoy mountain settings with cool and clean waters, unrivaled highland fishing, and undulating hiking trails with spectacular waterfalls along the way.
ATHENS Progressive College Town
Located about an hour east of Atlanta, Athens is home to the flagship campus of the University of Georgia (UGA). In addition to top-rated graduate schools and continuing education programs, the UGA campus is also the site of the Georgia Museum of Art and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Coasting to a Better Life
About 40% of Florida's nearly 22 million residents are age 50 or over, the nation's second-largest senior population. Many are active-lifestyle retirees, but many others are extending their working careers or donating their time as volunteers in a state with an average life expectancy of 80.2 years. The Tax Foundation's 2022 State Business Climate Index ranks Florida as the best state in the South for private enterprise and fourth in the entire nation. Florida businesses created a total of 479,300 new jobs in 2021, about 20% higher than the national rate of employment growth.

“When we were looking for houses, I instantly fell in love with this area. It wasn’t overcrowded and over trafficked, it still had a lot of convenience. We just saw so much potential. Wildlight has the most amazing neighbors we have ever had. The Florida Lowcountry living combines two things that we really love— porch swings and rocking chairs. It’s a combination of Florida living and that Lowcountry living from Savannah and up along the coast. We couldn’t have picked a better neighborhood.”

Resources and Recreation
Water, Water Everywhere State of Health Unique Attractions
Floridians are serious about maintaining their good health, consuming more locally grown fruits and vegetables, and getting more outdoor exercise than most Americans. And when they need some professional assistance, Florida has more than 50,000 licensed doctors, 250,000 registered nurses, and 300+ hospitals that are often hubs of extensive regional provider networks.
World-famous theme parks aren't the only one-of-a-kind attractions in Florida, where you can swim with manatees in the Crystal River, snorkel and dive on tropical coral reefs, and ride an airboat through the Everglades wetlands. Florida is also home to the Kennedy Space Center, where NASA regularly launches unmanned rockets and SpaceX crews. The 127-mile Overseas Highway takes drivers above the waves down to Key West.
No location in Florida is more than an hour's drive from the beach, and along the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, there are more than 660 miles of beaches that can all be enjoyed in every season. The same year-round schedule applies to off-shore fishing on both coasts, while kayakers and canoeists have 11,000 miles of Florida rivers, streams, and waterways to explore.
Climate
Florida has the mildest winters of any state except Hawaii. The relatively warm and dry days during that season make the state popular for visiting snowbirds and locals who enjoy outdoor recreations. Temperatures and humidity begin to climb in the late spring and peak during the summer, although frequently cooled by brief but intense afternoon showers. During July, August, and September, tropical storms can roll in off the Atlantic or rumble up the Gulf Coast.

“My husband Richard and I moved to Telaro at Tradition in January of 2022. For the last six and a half years, we lived in Montreal. There were many months in Quebec where we could only go out of the house to the market or the pharmacy. We owned a vacation home in a community in Tradition, so we knew we wanted to eventually move to Port St. Lucie; I was ready to embrace the 55+ lifestyle. We purchased in Telaro, and we didn’t really know what to expect—as all of the amenities were not open yet—but we met neighbors right away. Telaro’s lifestyle director, Nicole Cummings, has been putting together activities like happy hours, mix and mingles, trivia nights, different game nights, and a lecture and brunch series. We have yoga and tai chi classes. I am embracing this lifestyle. I think I might be a bit more appreciative since living up North. Some people who haven’t moved in yet are coming to yoga classes. They are jumping in and meeting people before they even move in.”

ORLANDO Culture of Fun
Millions of Americans and visitors from around the world have made the trip to Orlando for its destination theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios. But the Orlando area is also home to 2.5 million year-round residents that include working families in the tourism-driven economy and retirees in upscale leisure communities. When the latter aren't playing on one of the nearly 100 local golf courses, they may be kayaking on the Indian River or hiking in the Merritt Island Wildlife refuge. Weekend shows at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, symphonies and ballets at the Phillips Center, and touring exhibitions at the Orlando Museum of Art offer cultural diversions. The Orlando International Airport has daily flights to most major U.S. metropolitan areas. The area's top-rated hospitals and provider networks include a regional VA Medical Center that opened in 2015.

6th-lowest cost of living among all U.S. states
According to the latest U.S. Census data, Tennessee's population grew by nearly 9% in the past decade, an increase of more than 600,000 new residents. The Middle Tennessee counties around Nashville were among the nation's fastest growing with a 21% increase. New suburban and retirement communities spurred aboveaverage growth in five East Tennessee counties—Knox, Loudon, Bradley, Sevier, and Hamilton. The appeal of "small-town Tennessee" is no accident: The state is among the national leaders in revitalization efforts with its innovative Tennessee Main Streets and affiliated Tennessee Downtown programs. From Athens to Winchester, the 34 participant communities have preserved their traditional architecture and small-town ambiance, while creating economic incentives for new local businesses and professional services.
The highlands of East Tennessee offer an invigorating four-season climate, with cool evenings and vibrant woodland colors in the fall, occasionally significant snowfall that lasts a few days at a time in the winter, and very comfortable daytime highs in the spring and summer. The rest of the state is a continental subtropical zone, with generally warmer temperatures and higher humidity in summer. Average daytime temps are generally moderate in the spring and fall months, while a few inches of snow from time to time can be expected in the winter.

Recreational Trails
Tennessee features more than 1,500 hiking and biking trails, most of which are located in 56 state parks and recreational areas. That scenic collection is highlighted by the 210-mile Cumberland Trail with 50+ access points to segments that range in difficulty from easy to very challenging. Streams that flow from the East Tennessee mountains are popular blueways for kayaking and whitewater rafting excursions. For players who prefer electric-cart transportation, the Tennessee Golf Trail is composed of nine excellent daily-fee courses located in state parks, including three of the six Jack Nicklaus-designed layouts in the Bear Trace series.
Great Drives
The Tennessee Music Highway runs the length of the state from Bristol in the east to Memphis in the west, with stops along the way at dozens of historic sites and concert venues. The Cherohala National Scenic Byway is a beautiful two-lane driving route on the mountainsides above the Tellico River. But the granddaddy of them all is the Natchez Trace, originally a pioneer trail through the woodlands that connected the Cumberland, Tennessee, and Mississippi Rivers. Parts of that historic path can still be walked today, but most people prefer the driving tour on the 440-mile Natchez Trace Parkway that runs from Nashville to Natchez, Mississippi.
Home of American Music
Melodic tunes can be enjoyed everywhere in The Volunteer State of Tennessee, which makes a strong claim to be home of three authentic American music genres: bluegrass, which was created by Scots-Irish immigrants in the mountain towns of East Tennessee; country music, which grew from a regional sound to an international industry in the studios and concert halls in Nashville; and the blues, which emerged from the Mississippi Delta to take center stage in the Beale Street clubs of Memphis.
Lake Tansi Village

We’ve obviously seen an increased interest in Tennessee because of the affordable cost of living. Remote work and the ability to work from home has enabled more people to relocate to Tennessee for a better quality of life, and we’re a very tax-friendly state. We also have very low electricity costs thanks to the Tennessee Valley Authority. The Retire Tennessee program attracts retirees to 15 rural and urban counties throughout the state.”

Knoxville is East Tennessee's largest city and a regional center of business, education, and culture. In addition to headquarters for companies like Sea Ray Boats and the Tennessee Valley Authority, Knoxville is home to the main campus of the University of Tennessee (UT) and its world-class medical center. Graduates from UT and a dozen other area colleges staff innovative start-ups in the Tennessee Technology Corridor. Jackson Avenue in the Old City district is the local destination for fine dining, shopping, and nightlife. Cultural attractions include open-air concerts at the Tennessee Amphitheater, extensive collections at the Knoxville Museum of Art, and cultural history exhibits at the McClung Museum. The Knoxville Botanical Gardens is a flower lover's delight, while the city's 1,000-acre Urban Wilderness is a unique recreational preserve with historic sites, a nature center, zip lines, and 50 miles of hiking trails.
CHATTANOOGA Poised for the Future
Set along the banks of the Tennessee River in the state's southeastern corner, Chattanooga is a vibrant city of traditional culture and business innovation. The historic downtown area features symphony and opera performances at the Tivoli Theatre, tours of the Hunter Museum of American Art, and family fun at the Tennessee Aquarium. The high-tech business sector has grown rapidly in recent years, due in part to the city's Electric Power Board's region-wide 10-gigabyte internet system with free hot spots. Those connections are also used by Chattanooga's Parkridge and Memorial hospital systems to facilitate top-rated medical care. The entire area is a recreational wonderland with streams to kayak, lakes to fish, and mountains to climb. Chattanooga offers two other unique leisure destinations: the 16-mile Tennessee Riverwalk, an unrivaled urban path for walking and biking, and Lookout Mountain, which offers its own collection of hiking trails, plus panoramic views to inspire and deep caves to explore.

Despite its diminutive size, there is a marked difference in the mean temperature and amount of snowfall in Delaware from north to south. Temperatures in the southern part of the state are moderated by the stabilizing breezes off the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay. The state boasts a valued four-season climate without the extremes of heat and cold.
Health Care
U.S. News & World Report ranks Delaware #6 in the country for overall health care, including a #1 ranking in the category of hospital quality. Major hospital facilities are concentrated in more-populated northern Delaware, with Christiana Hospital in Newark leading the field in several disciplines.
Beaches & More
Recreation begins with the beach, whether you want the bustle of the boardwalk in Rehoboth or the protected serenity of nature at Delaware Seashore State Park. The Cape Henlopen State Park is 4,000 acres of walking and biking trails, bird sanctuaries, and beautiful beaches. Festivals and events abound, including the Delaware Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival in Wilmington on June 25. The Dover Motor Speedway is home to both NASCAR next spring and the famous Firefly Music Festival this fall on September 22.

Not So Far Away
Why choose Maryland? The question you should be asking yourself is: Why not? Although the state may not be the first that comes to mind when you think of retirement destinations, Maryland boasts a long coastline full of beaches, plenty of sports teams, seafood galore, and unique residents.

taxation on Social Security Benefits
Reasons abound as to why retirees love Maryland. Maryland has lower income taxes than many other coastal states and doesn’t tax social security benefits. Medical care here is top of the line. It is right outside of D.C. with its museums, monuments, restaurants, and traveling shows. There are two pro football teams and one major league baseball team, so it’s easy to catch a game if you're a fan of either sport. One other great thing about Maryland is their food and beverage industry. Many craft breweries and farm-to-table restaurants make it easy to broaden your palate. Plus, the Chesapeake Bay is perfect for all sorts of beach activities. Maryland simply has it all.
Climate
Maryland has a pretty moderate climate. Its summers hover around the 70s and 80s, while the winter lows fall to about 20° to 30℉. The state has over 200 days of sunshine per year, and it's home to over 150 tree species, making it a great state for gardening.
Health Care
According to U.S. News & World Report, Maryland is in the top 10 states for health care in terms of health care quality and access as well as public health. This state is home to Johns Hopkins Hospital, which is nationally ranked in many adult specialties, as well as numerous regional hospitals.

Median property tax is $1,556 per $100,000 of assessed home value. Partial rebates available for qualifying renters or buyers over 50.
Pennsylvania has become a relocation destination for those over 55. One reason is that retirement income is free from taxation. This makes it easy to spend more money on the things that you want to do, and Pennsylvania has something for everyone to love. There are many attractions for history enthusiasts such as Historic Gettysburg Battlefield. Cultural arts venues like historical theaters and museums are all over the state. Dozens of breweries as well as wineries and vineyards call Pennsylvania home. From ski resorts to Amish villages, Pennsylvania can be a wonderful place to retire.
Climate
Pennsylvania has a humid four-season climate. It is warm in the summer but hardly if ever reaches past the 90s. The winter brings in the cold and often ice and snow. Spring and fall present more moderate temperatures, although spring is a bit wetter. And, the fall foliage simply shouldn’t be missed here.
Health Care
A study by WalletHub found Pennsylvania to be 12th in the U.S. in terms of price, accessibility, and successful outcomes for patients. This study also concluded that Pennsylvania is 7th in the nation in terms of doctors per capita. And, the University of Pennsylvania hospital is one of the best in the country.

The Old Dominion
There is perhaps no place in the union more awash in history, natural beauty, cultural significance, and outdoor fun than Virginia, “our ancient dominion” as King Charles II of England referred to it in 1660.
5.3%
state sales tax rate
Virginia does not tax social security benefits, and there is no estate or inheritance tax
The state’s cost of living index is 103.7, which is above the national average
Virginia’s average effective property tax rate is just 0.8%, below the national average
The Commonwealth of Virginia takes its name from a term dating back to 15th century England meaning “common well-being.” This state emerged as the cradle of our representative democracy and excels in the quality of its health care, offers a mild year-round climate for healthy outdoor recreation, and takes pride in the legacy of its abundant history. Virginia’s diverse geography flows west from the Atlantic Ocean and Tidewater coastal plains, across the Chesapeake Bay and its bounty of seafood, through the fertile piedmont region, and all the way up to the ancient peaks of the Appalachian Mountains. Visit in the fall to enjoy apple-picking, and discover the growing popularity of hard cider— a mainstay libation for Presidents Washington, Jefferson, and John Adams, who drank a tankard every morning!
Recreation Climate Health Care
Virginia scores a comfort index of 7.4 on a scale of 10, so it's one of the most pleasant places to live in the country. There are 205 days of sun each year, right at the national average. And Virginia’s average annual snowfall is only 13.8 inches, so it’s one of the least snowy of the 50 states. Elevations run from sea level in the east to over 3,000 feet in the western mountains.
The “2022 America’s 250 Best Hospitals” list for overall clinical excellence includes 12 facilities from Virginia, with nearly half of them located in Richmond. Virginia ranks #12 in overall health care access and quality. And median health care costs are the lowest in the central and eastern regions of the state.
Start with a sunrise jog on the beach, then paddleboard in the Tidewater estuaries, or backpack along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Take a day trip to Shenandoah National Park, Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, and Monticello. Marvel at the wild ponies of Chincoteague Island, find adventure at Busch Gardens amusement park, or tour the Luray Caverns—the largest in eastern America. Don’t forget winery tours, zip-lining, birding, national-class golf, and Washington D.C. just across the Potomac River.

Walkabilty. The top amenity requested by Ideal-LIVING readers is walking trails. The good news is almost every planned development has a network of walking trails throughout to help residents stay in shape. 3
2 Sense of Community. Almost everyone in a planned community has moved from somewhere else. It’s a very welcoming environment, and they want for you to be a part of the community.
4

Proximity to Health Care. As planned developments attract a large number of retirees, quality medical centers and hospitals are generally nearby. 6
Social Clubs. Join any type of club that interests you. If there isn’t one, you can always start one, and others will join you. From cycling to walking and book clubs to walking groups, you’re sure to find at least one that suits your needs. 7
Sense of Security. Many planned communities are gated with 24/7 security.
8 9 10
Beautifully Maintained Homes. Planned communities have architectural guidelines that ensure the design integrity of the home.
Lush Landscapes. Planned communities are built around perfectly managed green spaces (especially when there is a golf course) that are filled with beautiful flora and fauna.
A Chance to Give Back. Community organizations within the developments offer an environment to volunteer your gifts.

Unlock Your Housing Wealth
Examining Your Financing Options
With rising interest rates, it’s a good idea to consider all of your financing options for the purchase of your new home. In the Spring issue, we discussed reverse mortgages and why they might be a good alternative to a traditional mortgage or paying cash. When purchasing a home with a reverse mortgage, you can increase your buying power with the funds you need while eliminating a monthly mortgage payment. Here, we wanted to show you an example of how the process works.
Reverse for Purchase
Jerry and Kathy, both 68, have decided to move forward with their retirement dream of living close to the beach on Florida's Gold Coast. They are purchasing a home for $650,000, but they will only receive $460,000 from the sale of their current home. They could decide to go with a traditional 30-year loan for the remaining $190,000 at 5.5% interest with a monthly principal and interest payment of $1,078 and pay $198,367 in interest over the life of the loan.
Or, they could take out a reverse mortgage* which creates an additional $106,700 in available funds and no required monthly payments. Jerry and Kathy can now choose any combination of the following:
• Take all loan proceeds and add to their retirement savings
• Apply the $106,700 to their loan balance and create a line of credit with a growth feature, or
• Make voluntary payments to maintain equity.
Requirements
• Must be 62 or older
• New property must meet outlined requirements; it must be a single-family residence, 2-4 unit property, townhome, or condo
• New home must be your primary residence
• Maintain new property and keep up-to-date on property taxes, insurance, and any HOA fees
This illustrative example generated on 4/1/2022 assumes a loan with a principal limit of $366,000 and a variable-rate initial rate of 3.275% changing annually with a maximum rate of 8.275%. Loan origination fee of $0 and remaining loan fees of approximately $0. Monthly loan servicing fee of $0. Terms may vary and conditions apply.
The borrower must meet all loan obligations, including living in the property as the principal residence and paying property charges, including property taxes, fees, and hazard insurance. The borrower must maintain the home. If the borrower does not meet these loan obligations, then the loan will need to be repaid.
*A reverse mortgage empowers qualified borrowers access to the equity in their home or purchase a property without any required monthly mortgage payments. Interest and fees are added to the loan balance over time rather than collected monthly like a traditional mortgage. The balance is repaid when the last remaining borrower permanently leaves the home or if the loan terms are not met.

Beaches, barbeque, bluegrass, and beyond. The South has its own culture, and it’s known for its own brand of hospitality. Arkansas is referred to as “The Natural State,” a well-earned moniker given its countless National Parks, wilderness areas, national wildlife refuges, protected waters, and over 50 state parks. Plus, almost its entire eastern border is framed by the venerable Mississippi River. Natural indeed! Arkansas is a haven for outdoor recreation and adventure of every sort. The state also boasts a rich cultural community, thanks in part to Walmart heiress Alice Walton, who brought life to the remarkable Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville—open free to the public. Little Rock is the state capital and largest city, while Fayetteville is a charming town and home to the University of Arkansas. Whether your taste runs toward city life or smaller-town living, you'll be amazed at the affordability of Arkansas’s residential offerings, with home prices often running 50% below the national average. ARKANSAS
Recreation Opportunities
From the languid cypress swamps of its delta south to the scouring rivers, waterfalls, and towering limestone bluffs in the mountainous north, Arkansas offers every kind of terrain for outdoor recreation. Up north, the 153-mile Buffalo National River is one of the few remaining undammed rivers in the continental U.S. and is a haven for white water rafting, trout fishing, or just lazing in one of its secret pools. Along with housing the Crystal Bridges Museum, Bentonville has been self-declared as the “Mountain Bike Capital of the World,” the epicenter of a burgeoning system of premier singletrack trails that crisscross the state. Care to partake in the restorative waters at Hot Springs National Park? Then tour the historic town, which includes grand landmark bathhouses, engaging art deco architecture, as well as a casino and thoroughbred racetrack that is home to the prestigious Arkansas Derby.
Health Care
Owing to the fact that much of Arkansas is rural in nature or conserved land, the number of premier hospital facilities in the state is limited, hence its health care ranking is not particularly high. However, there are top-rated facilities in Little Rock with The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Medical Center. And the Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville is ranked #1 in the state by U.S. News & World Report
Resources
Arkansas is the grateful beneficiary of an ancient sea bed that was pushed up during the Paleozoic Era and created the high plateau that today is the Ozarks or Ozark Mountains, which offer every kind of water recreation, plus hiking, birding, rock climbing, cycling, and cavern explorations. The Ozarks stretch north into Missouri where, just minutes over the Arkansas border, you’ll find Branson, one of the premier entertainment and recreation capitals in the country. And while you’re crossing borders, jump a mile across the Mississippi and take in the riverfront allure of Memphis, home to the Delta blues, the honkey tonks of historic Beale Street, and Sun Records, where Elvis recorded his first songs.
Climate
Like many states, the climate in Arkansas is partially driven by topography, with the mountainous northwest part of the state enjoying cooler summers and the mostly sea level southeast portion appreciating warmer winters. The southeast can get hot and steamy in the summer, with average highs in the low 90s, but spring and fall are delightful. While being a Southern state, Arkansas does flash impressive fall leaf colors.

Welcome Home to Mississippi

While many of the states in the South can seem overcrowded and pricey, Mississippi has avoided that reputation. Housing costs are significantly lower than other nearby states, making it somewhat of a hidden gem. Its affordability is just one of the many things to love about it. There are 25 state parks with opportunities for kayaking, hiking, picnics, and more. Plus, Mississippi has many historic sites and buildings for those history buffs out there. You can explore the Natchez Trace, civil war battlefields, and colonial settlements. And, for avid bird watchers and nature enthusiasts, Jackson County features the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge. Mississippi is truly an ideal location for anyone looking to save money on real estate and spend more time on what’s important.

Yes, it’s true: Southern hospitality is alive and well in Mississippi. Neighbors are very friendly and will welcome you with open arms.

Getting Grand in Arizona
The Grand Canyon State not only has breathtaking scenery around every corner, but it also has more than 100 wineries to visit while you enjoy the views. With a choice of golf courses second only to Florida, year-round sun, and a culinary scene to make your mouth water, it’s no wonder Arizona is one of the fastest-growing states in the country.
Effective
Climate
Arizona is well-known for its dry, desert heat and year-round sun. It doesn’t receive much rainfall, but surprisingly, there are pockets of the state that do experience all four seasons, such as Flagstaff. Nights tend to be cooler, which provides respite from the intensity of the summer heat, and the lack of humidity generally means an active, outdoor lifestyle is easy to maintain.
Arizona boasts a cost of living that is below the national average. This enticing fact and the 22 world-famous national parks and endless outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, climbing, and even hot air ballooning make Arizona an attractive relocation destination. Additionally, Arizona is a hive of activity, blending Native American and Hispanic cultures with a southwestern vibe to host eclectic festivals, art exhibits, delicious food, and theatrical events throughout the year. Combine this with some of the safest cities in the country and non-existent humidity, and we see why Arizona is looking so good. But did you know that Arizona is also one of the only states that doesn’t change the clock in fall or spring? Now that’s a real bonus!
Health Care
If health care is informing your next move, you need to know that Arizona has some of the best-rated hospitals in the entire country, including Mayo Clinic Arizona's two campuses—one in Phoenix and one in Scottsdale. Many surveys show that a majority of retirees are overwhelmingly happy with the available health care.
Recreation Opportunities
Arizona is a nature lover’s paradise, from the never-ending sunshine to the stunning rock formations. Camp in the most famous canyon in the world, soak up the beauty of Saguaro National Park, or kayak, paddleboard, or water ski at Lake Powell or Lake Mead. Take in the stunning colors of Antelope Canyon, with its endless rock walls, and check out the water at Emerald Cove, where microscopic organisms create its intense green color. Golf fans can tee up at more than 300 world-class courses across the state. There is so much to discover in this stunning state of deserts and mountains, forests and rivers, waterfalls and canyons; you’ll never run out of places to explore.

Magical New Mexico
From vast desert plains to dramatic volcanos and mountains, New Mexico is home to one of the most diverse landscapes in the world. Add to this its award-winning wine status, Santa Fe as the nation's highest elevation state capital, and the ancient Taos Pueblo, and we know New Mexico has to be seen to be believed.

Effective property tax rate
Median annual property tax paid by homeowners in New Mexico is $1,403, about $1,200 less than the national median.
I grew up in New Mexico and moved back to raise my family here. In many ways, it's still undiscovered. It has an incredible quality of life with a four-season climate. There is a genuine love of the arts, history, and culture here, and, did I mention, it's beautiful! It's not crowded, and you can see 30 to 50 miles of blue sky. At night you can see all the stars since there is no light pollution. As a state, we're trying to evolve at a pace we can manage to preserve all of the things we love about New Mexico."
John Garcia, Secretary of General Services Department, New Mexico
New Mexico is fast becoming a hot relocation destination due its exotic scenery, well-planned communities, and rich native American and Spanish culture. From the thriving artists’ community of Santa Fe located high in the mountains to the ski resort of Taos, New Mexico can accommodate a range of interests and lifestyles. Las Cruces is another charming town in the south of the state, providing a less expensive option to the more popular Santa Fe. Whether you’re a connoisseur of stunning sunsets, a UFO-enthusiast, or just a lover of the Spanish-inspired cuisine, New Mexico has an abundance of choice. And to top it all off, New Mexico has some of the lowest cost of living in the country.

Climate Recreation Opportunities
There’s plenty of sunshine! And the arid, dry heat of the long New Mexico summers makes it a wonderful year-round temperature, rather than having over bearing humidity. Much of the winter rain falls as snow in the mountains which is ideal for the ski resorts.
Health Care
New Mexico emerges as a health care leader by pushing for affordable care and prescription drug coverage for its residents. With many award-winning hospitals across the state, excellent treatment is available. The Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe is among six hospitals in New Mexico to receive a four out of five-star rating for overall quality, in a report by a government health care agency.
Home to five national forests, 15 national parks and monuments, 34 state parks, and eight ski resorts, the Land of Enchantment is abundant in its range of outdoor possibilities. Wheeler Peak, near Taos, is New Mexico’s highest mountain and Elephant Butte Lake State Park, is the state’s largest lake. Hike through the dunes of White Sands National Monument, or camp in the vastness of City of Rocks State Park for mind-blowing sunsets and places to climb. Capulin Volcano National Monument towers over the edge of the Great Plains in the state’s northeastern corner. It allows you to drive to the top of the 8,000ft cone for a view, including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado. Full facility RV parks are plentiful across the state, allowing for comfortable camping in some of the most scenic spots. And if you’ve ever wanted to go scuba diving, there are plenty of companies to choose from, so you can knock this off the bucket list. No write-up on New Mexico would be complete without mentioning the Roswell UFO Museum, where the curious can decide for themselves what happened in 1947!
Income Taxes
New Mexico is moderately taxfriendly toward retirees. Social Security income and withdrawals from retirement accounts are only partially taxed. Wages are taxed at normal rates, and the marginal state tax rate is 5.90%. Starting in 2022, New Mexico offers a limited and temporary tax break for military pensions. Up to $10,000 of military retirement pay is exempt from tax for the 2022 tax year. The exemption amount is increased to $20,000 for 2023, and then to $30,000 for 2024 to 2026.

Out of this World in Nevada
The Silver State has way more to offer than the largest deposit of this muchloved metal and possible alien landings. From the glittering lights of Las Vegas to epic scenery and outdoor adventure galore, Nevada should be high on the list of states to visit.
There is a wide selection to choose from when it comes to award-winning retirement communities in Nevada. Reno in the northern part of the state allows for easy access to resort areas around Lake Tahoe, the Sierras, and Sacramento. As one of the most tax-friendly states for retirees in the country, Nevada also offers stunning national parks such as Valley of Fire State and Red Rock Canyon. Historic towns offer a vibrant cultural scene and culinary delights to satisfy the most adventurous foodies. Climate Recreation Opportunities
The diversity of its weather almost matches the diversity of Nevada’s landscape. Luckily, hot summers take up way more of the year than the brief winter of two or three months that supplies the much needed snow for prime skiing resorts. Carson City has the best of everything with an average of only nine inches of rain and 253 days of sun each year.
Resources
Being fondly referred to as the Silver State speaks for itself. Nevada is rich in mineral deposits, particularly gold and silver. The mining industry is a major part of the Nevada economy, in addition to the obvious income from the entertainment capitals of Las Vegas and Reno.
Whether you’re looking for the world-famous glitz of Las Vegas, breathtaking hikes in the Valley of Fire State Park, or on-point skiing in the Ruby Mountains, Nevada has you covered. Take a spin on the world’s largest observation wheel, ride a Venetian gondola, or experience the Fountains of Bellagio in Vegas. Want to be outdoors? Go paddle-boarding, jet skiing, or camping in the popular Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Northern Nevada is also a surprising golf mecca, where the nine courses around Carson City enjoy the splendor of the Sierra as a backdrop. Did you know that as many as 19,000 wild mustangs and donkeys live in Nevada? You may be lucky enough to spot a herd from the Extraterrestrial Highway (State Route 375) or Highway 50 – coined the Loneliest Road in America, or book a wild mustang tour out of Reno. And, if you’re inspired to go underground, visit Great Basin national park, home to the stunning Lehman Caves, hollowed out of limestone and marble around 550 million years ago. Take a tour to witness the spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and rare formations.

La Pura Vida
Living “La Pura Vida” (the pure life) is one reason Costa Rica has become one of the most popular places in the world for North American retirees and expats to relocate. This beautiful country lures people to pack their belongings and reinvent their lives in Costa Rica.
Compared to many other countries in Central America, Costa Rica enjoys far more political and economic stability and has a moderate growth rate. It’s a democratic country, and that doesn’t seem likely to change. In addition, it has a relatively low cost of living to make it even more convenient, allowing even those with moderate incomes to live in relative comfort. In recent years, Costa Rica has also become the hub of a thriving technology sector. It is a vast country of rolling mountains, open plains, and lush river valleys. Known as the Switzerland of Central America, Costa Rica has no military, which has allowed military budgets to be diverted to the growth priorities of education, the environment, tourism, and health care. Costa Rica has a stable economy and currency, allowing residents to plan their costs and maintain their budgets safely.
We first came to Costa Rica on a cruise ship; then we just started vacationing and thought we might we want to live here when we retire. We were blown away by Arenal Hills. The craftsmanship of the homes was mind-blowing. It’s a beautiful property with rainforest and waterfalls where we have seen sloths, toucans, and blue jean frogs. If you love wildlife, it’s all here. You never have two days the same when you are here. People have so much pride in their country, and it’s well-deserved. They have done a beautiful job of protecting the environment and caring for what they have. I love the Pura Vida. We are so at peace in Arenal Hills.”

White Sand Beaches of Mexico
Mexico has become the most popular international haven for Americans and Canadians. Of the estimated 11.5 million who have chosen to live abroad, more than two million live in Mexico. Moreover, getting back and forth between the countries is effortless with direct flights between major cities.
Mexico boasts diverse climates that range from tropical to temperate mountain air found in higher altitudes. From Yucatecen to Tampico, the food of Mexico will delight any palate. You'll also find many living options, from 16th-century colonial towns and metropolitan cities to lake villages and beach towns. Known for its world-class beaches, you have your choice of the palm-fringed Pacific Coast or the powder-white sand beaches of the Caribbean.
The immigration process is streamlined and straightforward, with one of the world's easiest ways to qualify for temporary or permanent residence. And, Mexico offers an affordable cost of living and health care.
“We really enjoy the Costa Rican people; they are kind and helpful. We’ve tried to immerse ourselves in the culture. Here you are on “Tico Time.” People will get to it in their own time. You just have to go with the flow.
We advise others to do their due diligence. People might want it to be where they came from, but you really need to embrace the culture. It is not cheap to live in Costa Rica. If you want to buy products that are not naturally grown or manufactured here, you will pay more. The restaurants serve locally grown foods. I lost over 25 pounds from just eating a healthier diet in two and a half years. Most people have produce that grows in their yards. We have mango, lime, and avocado trees in our yard. Every weekend in every town, there are farmers markets with some fruits and vegetables you might not even recognize, but you can get a week’s worth of fruits and vegetables for $30.
We love our life in Los Reyes—it’s 20 minutes to the hospital and the airport. And, we’re only an hour from the beach. We belong to groups that go into San Jose for cultural events. We live on the golf course, and it’s a gated community. Los Reyes reminds us of an old-time neighborhood with large trees. It’s established and secure. We really have the best of all worlds.
And, when it comes to health care, I feel more comfortable in Costa Rica than I would have in the states. The doctors and nurses genuinely care about you — you are not just a name or number on a chart. You can pay as you go, but health care is cheaper here than in the states.
Put Costa Rica on your bucket list."
Susan and Bob Locke Los Reyes, San Jose, Costa Rica

The Center of the World
Ecuador is one of the most bio-diverse countries on the planet and happens to hold the distinction of having a city in the middle of the world. Adventure awaits whether you climb in the rain forests or venture to the Pacific to surf or scuba dive, or maybe even take a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
Life in Ecuador is much like life in Costa Rica about 15 years ago, with friendly people and a low cost of living. Although the majority of the population lives below the poverty level, the people are very happy to share their country with those who appreciate it. Quality health care in Ecuador is very inexpensive; U.S.trained doctors' appointments are roughly $30, and insurance is around $200 a month for a couple aged 65. Health care costs are roughly 10 to 20% of what they would be in the U.S. To top it all off, the country's official currency is the U.S. dollar.
All of this and the weather is amazing. The year-round temperature ranges from 84 to 91 degrees in the day and between 68 and 75 degrees in the evening, and the temperature cools as you increase in elevation.
Between Two Worlds
Embedded between two continents and two oceans, Panama is small in size but enormous in features. It is perfectly packed with geological and biological diversity, rich culture and history, a thriving economy, and a quality lifestyle. For most of the year, Panama is sunny with an average temperature in the mid- 70s in the mornings and mid-80s in the afternoons. While the rainy season lasts from April to September, there are no hurricanes.
The raw beauty of Panama's landscape offers endless exploration. Visit the stunning archipelagos made up of hundreds of islands. Experience some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. When you add to the mix the country's lush cloud forests, mountains, lakes, and rivers, you'll find you're living in a true natural sanctuary.
Panama has a thriving, stable economy with an affordable cost-of-living and world-class healthcare, while also providing a tax haven.
“In Ecuador, every day has perfect weather. We wanted something luxurious but affordable. We searched for a long time, and Ecuador wasn’t even on our radar. We found Los Olas on a web search, and it checked 12 for 12 on our wish list. Weather, golf, and horses, who could ask for more? The cost of living is about half of that in Canada. We cashed out early and moved here four and a half years ago.”
Greg and Lisa Josie are renting a condo in Manta just an hour south of Los Olas while they build their home with golf, mountain, and ocean views, and all within walking distance to their horses.
Lisa is a champion show jumper and barrel races and needed somewhere she could ride. She’s also completed two Ironman races in Ecuador so far.
Lisa says, “On one of my rides the other day, we came upon a sea lion on the beach. That’s not something horses are used to seeing. We get to ride on the beach and in the mountains.
"We’re not giving up creature comforts, but when you live here, consumerism disappears. You buy what you need. We wear shorts and t-shirts and sandals all of the time. You also eat a lot healthier here— everything is all-natural. I lost 30 pounds when we moved here, and Greg lost 20 pounds.
"We had socialized medicine in Canada that always covered everything, but we have found that health care in Ecuador is exceptional. The doctors even make house calls."
Lisa and Greg Josie Los Olas, Ecuador
