Essential Heritage

he so-called Old Town of Funchal is located in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, which back when settlers first made it to the island was known as Santa Maria do Calhau. In 1986, this zone was classified by the Regional Government of Madeira so as to protect the whole area, which is of particular significance in terms of history, architecture, heritage and culture. The story goes that it was here that the first urban centre of the city was supposedly born in the 15th century, probably from around the 1420s onward. This area stands out as a whole and not just for any specific estate, even though there are also landmarks here. The area stands out for its narrow paved streets and traces of a primitive road where one can witness the evolution of the town throughout the ages given the amalgamation of different styles, images of the several periods in which the place existed. One of the many arteries in the area is Rua de Santa Maria, which crosses what would become the old nucleus of Santa Maria do Calhau, and which many experts believe to be the oldest street in Funchal and, most likely, the oldest street built by Europeans in the Atlantic. denominada Zona Velha do Funchal, localiza-se na freguesia de Santa Maria Maior, conhecida inicialmente, na altura do povoamento, por Santa Maria do Calhau. Esta zona foi, em 1986, classificada pelo Governo Regional da Madeira, de modo a que fosse possível proteger toda a área, de particular importância ao nível histórico, arquitetónico, patrimonial e cultural. Reza a história que foi aqui, nesta localidade, que terá nascido o primeiro núcleo urbano da cidade, a partir da década de 20 do século XV. Esta área impõe-se sobretudo pelo seu todo e não apenas por um ou outro imóvel isolado, embora também haja edificações de referência. Destacam-se as suas características ruas estreitas e calcetadas, vestígios do traçado viário inicial, onde se pode testemunhar a evolução da cidade pelo tempo dada a amálgama de estilos diferentes, imagem das várias épocas vividas pelo lugar. Entre as várias artérias destaca-se a Rua de Santa Maria, que atravessa o que seria o antigo núcleo de Santa Maria do Calhau, e que muitos especialistas consideram ser a mais antiga rua do Funchal e provavelmente a mais antiga construída pelos europeus no Atlântico. É um dos pontos mais procurados pelos visitantes da cidade e também pelos locais já que a oferta de espaços comerciais é vasta, sobretudo bares e restaurantes, com propostas gastronómicas de diferentes partes do Mundo.
