En Red Latina estuvimos presentes en la ceremonia de juramento de los Concejales y tuvimos la oportunidad de entrevistar a importantes representantes de la comunidad Hispana que estuvieron presentes en la ceremonia, La tradición de esta celebración proviene de los griegos, quienes al inicio de la primavera homenajeaban a Rea, madre de todos los dioses, con rituales y regalos. At Red Latina we were present at the swearing-in ceremony for the Councilors and we had the opportunity to interview important representatives of the Hispanic community who were present at the ceremony.

The tradition of this celebration comes from the Greeks, who at the beginning of spring honored Rhea, mother of all the gods, with rituals and gifts. However, this custom became official in the 20th century in the United States thanks to a woman who decided to honor her mother.

In 1905, Anna Jarvis began a campaign for what she called “Mother’s Day” after her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died on May 9 of that year.Three years later, she Anna organized a tribute to her mother even though the date was not an official holiday.

By 1911, all the states of the American Union had recognized the holiday, but it was not until 1914 that Woodrow Wilson, then president of the United States, signed a decree to recognize Mother’s Day as a national holiday.

l pasado martes 18 de Abril se llevó a cabo la Ceremonia de Juramente del Board of Aldermen de St. Louis, la ceremonia sucedió en el City Hall en Tucker Boulevard y Market Street; donde representantes de todos los círculos sociales y políticos de nuestra ciudad se dieron cita. Los Latinos, por supuesto, estuvimos presentes para ser partícipes del juramento de Daniela Velázquez, primera Latina electa en un cargo público de St. Louis.

La ceremonia de Juramento fue histórica por varios motivos, siendo el primero a destacar, la diversidad de orígenes y alineaciones tanto políticas como personales de los juramentados, la participación como Maestra de Ceremonias de Alaska Royale, miembro de la comunidad LGBTQ+ y por supuesto, el juramento de Daniela Velázquez. En su participación, Megan Green comentó lo siguiente: “Todos nosotros estamos agradecidos por su servicio, esos logros nos llevaron a un punto de inflexión que entregó la lista más diversa de legisladores municipales en la historia de nuestra ciudad. Respecto a la ceremonia, tuvimos la oportunidad de conversar con varios de los asistentes, todos ellos destacados miembros de la comunidad Latina, personas con amplia trayectoria apoyando causas sociales y amigos.

Regarding the ceremony, we had the opportunity to talk with several of the attendees, all of them prominent members of the Latino community, people with extensive experience supporting social causes and friends.

Attorney Richard Hein, of the Hein Law Firm stated; “It is a historic day for the Latino community, breaking the glass ceiling is an essential step to motivate the next generations of Latinos to participate in political life.”

Among the winners, the nomination of Gabriela Ramírez Arellano stands out. Originally from Mexico and inspired by her own experience growing up in the US, Gabriela is committed to helping others. Since she returned to St. Louis in 2016, she has focused her volunteer efforts on supporting small businesses, economic development, and language access. Gabriela helps small business owners achieve her dreams through her work at CORTEX and with her Auténtico podcast in collaboration with STLPR. Her work at the BALSA Foundation promotes social equity and prosperity. Gabriela, an author and marathon runner, is so proud to raise amazing children who inspire her to help make the world a better place.

“We are highlighting a selection of notable women who are committed to bettering and supporting the St. Louis community through volunteerism,” said Pam Toder, president of Women of Achievement. “For 68 years, Women of Achievement has been proud to honor the extraordinary volunteer efforts of women across the region.These are women who are motivated to give back and find a way to do it as a volunteer. El recientemente establecido St. Louis Tech Council, lanzó la STL TechWeek que contó con más de 30 eventos gratuitos durante la semana del 24 al 28 de abril. The newly established St. Louis Tech Council launched STL TechWeek, which featured over 30 free events during the week of April 24-28. The Missouri Folk Arts Program has chosen the recipients of the inaugural Missouri Living Traditions Sustainer Fellowship, the state’s newest award to recognize the artistic excellence and lifetime achievement of living traditional artists in the Show Me State. The fellowships honor these individuals’ deep-rooted contributions to their art forms and to the vibrant communities in Missouri that the artists support.

An independent panel of traditional arts and community specialists selected the honorees from a competitive pool of public nominations. This new project is made possible through grant funds received from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Missouri Arts Council, with support from the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri.

The 2023 honorees will be recognized in a ceremony from 2:30 – 5:00 p.m. at Compass, Inc.,1107 University Avenue, in Columbia, Mo., on May 21, 2023.

Living Traditions Sustainer Fellowships are modeled on the National Heritage Fellowships presented since 1982 by the NEA. For Missouri’s fellowship, Missouri Folk Arts Program uses the NEA’s definition of folk and traditional arts:

The folk and traditional arts, which include crafts, dance, music, oral traditions, visual arts, and others, are those that are learned as part of the cultural life of a community whose members share a common ethnic heritage, cultural mores, language, religion, occupation, or geographic region. These traditions are shaped by the aesthetics and values of a shared culture and are passed from generation to generation, most often within family and community through observation, conversation, and practice.

Missouri’s 2023 Living Traditions Sustainer Fellows are:

Kenny Applebee, Old-time rhythm guitarist of Mexico, Mo. Kenny Applebee is widely recognized as a mainstay of old-time music in Missouri. He has “backed” fiddlers on his rhythm guitar for decades at contests, jams, concerts, dances, and the Bethel Youth Fiddle Camp. Applebee picked up the

guitar at age 14 and credits a regional flat picker for teaching “all the chords I needed to know.” As an adult, he got involved in Missouri’s vibrant old-time music community via the Montgomery City Old Threshers Reunion and Fiddle Contest. In addition to a lifelong career in farming, over the years, Applebee has evolved as the “goto” back-up guitarist for numerous fiddlers from multiple generations. His notable honors include invitations to perform in 1988 with Rhonda Vincent and the late Pete McMahan in Hannibal, as well was at the 1991 Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the 2010 Centrum Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. He accompanies master fiddler John P. Williams regularly for the Missouri State Museum and Old-time Music, Ozark Heritage Festival. Additionally, Applebee has taught three rhythm guitar apprentices in Missouri’s Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program between 2017 and 2021.

Folkloric dancer/choreographer/costume maker of St. Louis, Mo.

Carmen Sofia Dence grew up immersed in the traditional Colombian dances of Barranquilla that meld Indigenous, Spanish, and African influences. She has lived in St. Louis, Missouri for over forty years, where she spent decades at Washington University, retiring in 2015 as an Associate Professor of Radiology. She tends to her lifelong passion for dance via Grupo Atlántico St. Louis, the dance troupe she founded in 1995. They perform often at Missouri History Museum, Festival of Nations, and other key events in metro St. Louis. As Missouri Touring Performers through Missouri Arts Council’s directory, Grupo Atlántico has performed around the state and in the Mid-America region. In 2012, Dence founded Dancing Damsels, a troupe of “seasoned seniors” dedicated to artistry and activity for life. She is a previous recipient of the 2022 Missouri Arts Award for Individual Artist; 2019 St. Louis Visionary Award for Outstanding Teaching Artist; and 2019 Anthony B. Ramirez Esperanza Award, among others. Additionally, Dence taught five apprentices since 1994 in Missouri’s Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program.

La persona evasiva siente incómoda al mantener relaciones íntimas, le cuesta confiar y detesta la idea de depender de alguien, sea emocional o financieramente.

Temen la proximidad, no se sienten a gusto con la intimidad. Sus parejas desean más intimidad de la que pueden darles. Para ellos, es muy importante la independencia y la autosuficiencia. En los momentos de estrés, tienden a buscar menos apoyo de sus parejas.

Coordination Hydrologist with the North Central River Forecast Center of the National Meteorological Service. “It basically acted like you had a four or five inch storm over a wide area. You are going to expect flooding on the river.” In 2019, there were multiple significant rain events as the snowmelt crest approached, making matters worse. The US Army Corps of Engineers says this year should be a shorter event compared to 2019, where some districts were fighting flooding for nearly 100 days. “We expect this to be a relatively rapid flood, several weeks to a month as it moves through the system. So these floods had to move through a very large navigation system,” said Drew Smith of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Barring heavy rains, flooding in St. Louis is not yet a concern. Detrás de ese miedo existen ideas, creencias, emociones, tales como miedo a manejar situaciones nuevas, a pérdidas físicas o emocionales. También terror a equivocarnos, a ser criticados, a perder el control. En fin, todo esto causa ansiedad e inseguridad, que nos provoca resistencia al cambio.

Los motivos que nos impiden cambiar son la autoestima baja o la creencia de que cambiar es ser inestable.

Si deseamos cambiar un problema, debemos pasar por cuatro etapas, según Paul Watzlawick, John H. Weakland y Richard Fisch.

-Una clara definición del problema en términos concretos

-Una investigación de las soluciones hasta ahora intentadas

-Una clara definición del cambio concreto a realizar

-La formulación y puesta en marcha de un plan para producir dicho cambio.

of the Metro East Every Survivor Counts (Metro ESC) Board. We would like to bring your attention to an emergent issue regarding services for our sexual assault population. Due to funding restraints, the continuation of services for the area is in jeopardy. It is unsure if these survivors will have advocacy and counseling services available to them. This will impact not only the survivor but the community at large.

Sexual assault does not occur in a vacuum. The effects ripple throughout the community in many ways. It impacts society through an increase in the burden on health care services, illicit drug and alcohol use, and the use of the judicial system. Further, sexual assault has a negative impact on the economy through a loss of productivity and lower educational achievements of the survivor. Studies have shown that the presence of an advocate can help the survivor mitigate trauma and experience less psychological and physical disparities.

We are asking for your help with this critical situation. First, while we are working to secure grants, we need operating costs to continue with services. We would be grateful for any support you are able to give at this time. Second, please write your representatives and Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault (ICASA) to express the dire need for services for the Metro East and your support of our efforts to maintain sexual assault services in this area. As a Latina mother, I am very proud to have a daughter who is first generation and willing to make an effort to pursue higher education. She worked tirelessly with Puertas Tutoring, a WashU program that assists Latino high schoolers with their college journey. Sarah attributes much of her success to Martin, a Puertas tutor, and Virginia, the head of the program. I hope Sarah becomes an example for other Latino children who might be afraid of entering the unknown or stuck in the cycle of generational poverty.

El pasado domingo 28 de abril, 2023; en la librería de Fairmont City una de las ciudades de mayor concentración latina en el área metropolitana de St. Louis, se dieron cita representantes que apoyan en la campaña TVDL “Yo voto ID para TODOS”; entre ellos se encontraba el Senador (D) Christopher Belt, quien apoya la propuesta de ley HB3882. Así como varios representantes de Minneapolis, en donde en enero 30, de este año aprobaron este proyecto de ley y el gobernador Tim Walz firmo la Ley de licencias de conducir para todos, esto permitirá a los residentes indocumentados de ese estado solicitar licencias de conducir; lo cual dará inicio en octubre de este mismo año.

En 2013 el estado Illinois paso la legislación TVDL que permite a los inmigrantes indocumentados poder obtener una licencia de conducir que no es validad como identificación.

La legislación que ahora se está solicitando es que esa licencia de conducir TVDL pueda usarse como una identificación válida para los inmigrantes indocumentados.

El proyecto de ley, conocido como Licencias de Conducir Para Todos (Driver’s Licenses For All en inglés) abriría esa oportunidad para miles de inmigrantes indocumentados que viven en Illinois, esos inmigrantes son mayores de la edad legal para conducir de 16 años, según el Instituto de Política Migratoria en Washington, DC.

Hablamos con Valery Mora una de las organizadoras de la comunidad del estado de Illinois que está acudiendo a diversas

ciudades para promover esta iniciativa, indicando que la fecha límite para contactar a los senadores de Illinois es el 19 de mayo, 2023.

Illinois could join the states with a Driver’s License for Undocumented Persons that serve as official identification

Last Sunday April 28, 2023; At the Fairmont City bookstore, one of the cities with the highest concentration of Latinos in the St. Louis metropolitan area, representatives who support the TVDL campaign “I vote ID for ALL” met; among them was Senator (D) Christopher Belt, who supports HB3882. Just like several representatives from Minneapolis, where on January 30 of this year they approved this bill and Governor Tim Walz signed the Driver’s Licenses for All Act, this will allow undocumented residents of that state to apply for driver’s licenses; which will begin in October of this year.

In 2013, the state of Illinois passed the TVDL legislation that allows undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver’s license that is not valid as identification.

The legislation that is now being requested is that TVDL driver’s license can be used as a valid identification for undocumented immigrants.

The bill, known as Driver’s Licenses For All, would open up that opportunity for thousands of undocumented immigrants living in Illinois who are over the legal driving age of 16, according to the Institute. of Immigration Policy in Washington, DC.

We spoke with Valery Mora, one of the community organizers from the state of Illinois who is going to various cities to

promote this initiative, indicating that the deadline to contact Illinois senators is May 19, 2023.
