Spring Fling 2023 Brochure

Page 54

Welcome

We are delighted to present another open studio event, this year with 100 studios, our biggest event to date! The event will take place across the region from Portpatrick to Sanquhar, Dumfries and Eskdalemuir (and everywhere in between!). Join us in the studios from 27-29 May 2023.

This year we have continued to focus on our studios and welcoming back the public into these creative spaces. Due to the ongoing financial situations affecting most, and especially small independent businesses, we have been delighted to offer more financial aid and supported participation. This year we have given out more bursaries (of an increased amount) and launched a brand-new scheme called CREATE which offers a free place in the event for an artist working in experimental, installation or site-specific work that doesn’t quite fit in the “traditional” studio environment.

We have 18 new studios and lots of emerging artists and makers taking part, producing everything from painting and printmaking to installations and blacksmithing. All studios are open for the full 3 days (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) and you can be assured of a warm welcome!

This brochure features details of our studios and information on our bus, bike and walking tours, the Spring Fling Prize Draw and our pop-up activities in the lead up to this year’s event. As well as information on other Upland projects like Emerge, our international residency exchange, Artful Migration and ROAM.

We hope visitors will be able to enjoy as many studios as they can across the long weekend, however, we know you can’t visit them all! This brochure, and the Spring Fling website (www.spring-fling.co.uk), has all the information you need to find out what studios are taking part, where they are and how to get there.

This year’s brochure illustration has been produced by Jill Calder and it presents Scotland’s most southerly point, the Mull of Galloway, an area you can travel to on one of our tours and visit Spring Fling studios! We are delighted to produce the brochure again with partners Alba Printers. We hope you enjoy seeing all that the event has to offer and start planning your visit!

With special thanks to our funders and supporters who have helped make this year’s event and it’s extended programme possible: Dumfries & Galloway Council, Creative Scotland, the Barfil Trust, the Holywood Trust, Archie Sutter Watt, our dedicated board, staff and our Friends. Most importantly, we would like to thank our event participants, both new and returning, for all their hard work in preparation for the event. We can’t wait to visit their studios!

On behalf of everyone at Upland, we hope you enjoy Spring Fling 2023.

Emerge Mentoring Programme

Emerge is a programme of mentoring and a bursary of £1,000 for early career artists or makers, working in any visual art or craft medium, who have a strong connection to Dumfries & Galloway.

This year we have awarded two Emerge Bursaries which will see each recipient paired up with an experienced Upland artist or maker. As well as creating new work and taking part in Spring Fling, the recipients will also benefit from go & see trips, networking and training opportunities.

Emerge aims to provide support which will enable the participants to develop both creatively and professionally, providing a stepping stone between education or employment and a career in the arts.

One of this year’s bursaries is specifically for an emerging artist or maker aged 30 years and under, which is supported by the Holywood Trust and the Archie Sutter Watt Trust. The second bursary is for an emerging artist or maker of any age, which is supported by Creative Scotland.

Emerge recipients for 2023 are:

Rachel Ashcroft (Studio 69, p47)

Abbie La Rooy (Studio 77, p51)

Spring Fling Open Studios continues as Upland’s flagship event but we also offer a yearround programme delivering a range of projects, events and exhibitions working with young people, emerging and established artists and makers.

70 Spring Fling Open Studios 27-29 May 2023
Modern Makers 2022 with Mark Zygadlo

As the visual arts and craft development organisation for Dumfries & Galloway, Upland aims to provide a network for learning and sharing, offering advice and support to creative practitioners whilst aiming to inspire and educate a wide range of audiences to participate in and be supportive of visual arts and crafts.

As a membership organisation we work to create opportunities that connect our artists and makers with audiences, communities and each other. With a strong sense of place, we aim to highlight and celebrate our unique region and its creative community, raising its profile in a national and international context.

CURRENT PROJECTS

This year we have a full programme of events and projects, including the Artful Migration Residency which offers artists a unique insight into the migratory birds of Dumfries & Galloway through partnerships working with local nature reserves. This year we are partnering with Forest Land Scotland and the RSPB Dumfries & Galloway to enable artists Leeming & Paterson to explore the elusive nightjar, one of Scotland’s rarest and most unusual birds. The residency will culminate with an exhibition in the autumn.

This year we are also delivering two complimentary projects which will explore and grow space for contemporary art and experimental projects in our rural region. ROAM (Space) explores the idea of creating a project space run by and for emerging artists, while ROAM (West) investigates how contemporary art practice can be developed in the western region of Dumfries & Galloway, led by artist and curator Jack Ky Tan.

We’re also delighted to be developing a new art and craft fair, Upland made, bringing a selection of our artists and makers under one roof in the run up to the festive period.

To keep in touch with all our projects and events throughout the year, please visit www.weareupland.com
