HIKING IN MAJORCA EXPLO RING UNES C O WOR LD HE R ITAGE
T
he geography of Mallorca, its nature and its breath-taking landscapes make it an ideal destination for lovers of hiking. In fact, more and more locals and visitors travel the island equipped with their backpacks and eager to discover iconic places that leave many with open mouths. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the Cultural Landscape category in 2011, the Serra de Tramuntana combines landscape, culture and heritage in 90 kilometres of nature overlooked by the Puig Major, the highest peak on the island. In the Serra, there are hidden routes for hikers of all levels willing to discover this magical treasure of Mallorca. One of the most typical excursions to enjoy a family day is the Castell d’Alaró. A pleasant route, full of vegetation, which ends at the Oratory, surrounded by an esplanade where you can rest, play with the children and, of course, eat something to recharge your batteries before going back. Another route for all levels is the one that begins at the church in the municipality of Bunyola and ends at the Comuna. The path is easy and well signposted, so it is common to find many families and groups doing this route on weekends. For the more experienced hikers, Mallorca also offers incredible itineraries. The Camí de s’Arxiduc is one of our essentials. It starts in the beautiful municipality of Valldemossa and, although the path is not difficult, the route is long and has a 507 metres drop, but the effort is well worth it to enjoy the views of Sa Foradada. Another excursion to challenge our legs is the one that runs through Puig Tomir. For this one, we must be aware of the slopes that we will find during the descent, as they are very vertical. Therefore, it is best to prepare beforehand so as not to suffer more than necessary. Last but not least, the island’s most iconic excursion: Torrent de Pareis. The beginning, in Escorca, marks a wild route that fans of canyoning should absolutely not miss. If you like to walk through nature and admire the landscape, you will know how difficult it is to explain what it feels like to practice hiking. So we can only recommend that you choose a route, put on your hiking boots and fill your backpack with food and water. And, of course, do not forget: the important thing is not the finishing line: it is all about enjoying the journey.
