FIFTIES PLUS MOUNTIES February’21 A visit to Pine Crest Orchard at Bilpin where we able to pick our own apples and pears, which they had many varieties. Lunch was at Wallerawang Community and Sports Club. Great day to be out and about.
March’21 We enjoyed a Nova 2.5 hour Newcastle Harbour Luncheon Cruise. Even though the weather was challenging we had never seen so many waterfalls along the M1. While cruising we saw tug boats, cargo ships and coal loading facilities. While enjoying our lunch the captain gave a running commentary about the harbor and its history. The weather was terrible but the day was great.
April’21 Wirrimbirra Sanctuary – Bargo, is a heritage listed fauna sanctuary native plant nursery. Wirrimbirra means “to keep, to preserve”. Due to the bush fires Wirrmbirra was badly affected, but are slowly returning to their better days. Next stop NSW Railway Museum at Thirimere , where every object on display has its own story to tell about social, economic and technological significance. Lunch at Bago Sports Club
May’21 Eight day trip to Mildura and Broken Hill. We stayed overnight at Griffith on first day. Day two we travelled to Wentworth where we had a brief tour of this historic town.
Our trip left from the Mounties club 'Twas early Monday morn An outback tour organised By fearless leader Dawn Now Robbie was our Coachman He did a Sterling job Of taking us from place to place The over 50s mob He drove us o'er 2,000 miles To places near and far He took us on some old dirt roads But mostly on the tar Each day we broke our journey with a luncheon at the pub While other times we made a stop at the local sandwich club
There is a bronze statue of Possum, who when disgruntled by life during the Great Depression took to living off the land in and around Wentworth. Mildura is our next stop for a relaxing cruise on the paddle steamer Melbourne. Day four Mungo National Park, until 15,000 years ago was a vast lake and one of the earth’s longest continuous human habitants. The Great Wall of China was created due to the wind storms and the lake is no longer. Broken Hill next day where we were given a guided tour of the ghost town of Silverton, known as the Hollywood of the outback. Movies have been produce here such as Mad Max 2, Pricilla Queen of the Desert and many more. We were given a special tour of the White Mineral Arts and Mining Museum. The Living Desert Reserve with its 12 sandstone sculptures and at sunset gave a stunning display of changing of colour. At the start of our holiday, Peter Mannering started writing a poem, nobody knew until the last day when it was read to the group, he called it Broken Hill. Please take time to read it. Once again great holiday Our club tries to make everyone feel welcome. Holidays can be paid off in installments, making it easier for many people to come along. Anyone wanting to join can ring Dawn Kelly on 0413 041 254. Our meetings are held on the first Sunday of each month, except September due to Father’s day, starting at 11.30am We’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We travelled 'cross the Hay Plains sparse The country did seem empty The trees were few Grass hardly grew The red dust was aplenty
The mill the tailings and the slimes The concentrates and stage The mullock gangway and the skip The plumbob bogger and cage But now we're heading home again A week without a care A holiday with memories We can forever share
On and on we drove each day Cross the endless plains until A jagged line across the sky We'd arrived at Broken Hill We gazed upon the Line of Load We saw the Pinnacles The little town of Silverton Rock carvings on the hills We learnt about the stope and chute The pass the shaft and kibble The rise the winze the baulk and cut 'Twas enough to make one dribble
The Mounties over 50s And some other extra friends Hope we see you soon again As soon as Covid ends So Robbie here's a little thought A special thanks from us For taking real good care of us On your Coach that's not a bus 'Broken Hill' Written By: P.J. Mannering For the FiFties Plus 24th May 2021 |
