Welcome to the latest update on what’s going on in our vibrant town, compiled by Andrea Hargreaves.
Spoken Word and Music
LitFest20 – Seaford’s annual celebration of words and music started on Thursday 27th February and goes on until Sunday 1st March. On Saturday at 11am local author Simon Parke is reading from his books and talking about the murder-mystery genre and at 2pm violinist Maeve Jenkinson and pianist Martin Neill are performing favourite classical works. At 4.30pm local writer Richard Wright is discussing his work in progress and reading from his books and at 7pm Nicholas Royle is talking about memoir writing with reference to his next book. Sunday begins at 11am with poems from Peter Martin and music from Joy and Derrick. At 2pm Jill Bush leads a workshop on publishing family history and at 4pm authors Umi Sinha, Ruth Figgest and Wendy Atkinson are telling stories. The festival concludes at 7pm with an open mic poetry night with guest poet Susan Evans. Tickets and further information from www.thecryptgallery.com and www. seahavenpoets.co.uk.
Cinema
Seaford Community Cinema’s exciting season at the Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane, continues on Friday 6th March at 7.30pm with Mrs Lowry and Son (PG), starring Vanessa Redgrave and Timothy Spall. The painter lived with his mother until her death in 1939 but she was far from encouraging. On Sunday 8th March at 4pm the cinema is screening the second of it’s Winter Warmers, Breakfast at Tiffany’s (U), with the unforgettable Audrey Hepburn as extrovert socialite Holly Golightly, along with George Peppard and Patricia Neal. The Biggest Little Farm (PG), on Friday 13th March at 7.30pm, is a charmingly directed documentary describing a Californian approach to rewilding in which a young couple, John and Molly Chester, try to work in harmony with nature to create a bio-diverse farm that returns sustenance to the land – the environmental

message being enhanced by the cute cast of animals. The third Winter Warmer is The Lion King (PG) on Sunday 22nd March at 4pm, starring Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, James Earl-Jones – reprising his Mufasa role – and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Simba grows from cub to lion and tries to regain his rightful throne. March closes with the Ken Loach-directed Sorry We Missed You (15) on Friday 27th at 7.30pm. It is a fierce indictment of the gig economy and sees a jobless dad played by Kris Hitchen having no option but to drive for an exploitative delivery firm. With his carer wife, played by Debbie Honeywood, facing similar pressures, their family life becomes toxic. This film had rave reviews at Cannes.
Music
Melvyn Tan and Maggie Cole play together, four hands at one piano, at Seaford Music Society’s concert at St Leonard’s Church, Church Street, Seaford on Sunday 8th March at 3pm. They are performing works by Mozart, Schubert and Debussy. Go to The View at Seaford Head Golf Club at 7pm on Wednesday 11th March to see guitarist Andy Williams jamming with Neal Richardson’s Splash Point Jazz Club band. On Sunday 29th March at 4pm the Corelli Ensemble are in concert at Seaford Baptist Church, Belgrave Road with a programme including Telemann’s Concerto for Four Violins, Sammartini’s Recorder Concerto in F, Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and Ward’s Celtic Concerto.
Art
Last Minute Artists take over the Crypt Gallery on Saturday and Sunday 14th and 15th March with an exhibition called Still Life Challenge – 3D and Wall Art, see page 39 Meanwhile Phil Duncan’s The Sussex Art Collective is back in the gallery’s Cuckmere Room, at the front following their successful first year.
