March, the real new year?
Doesn’t Christmas seem like a long time ago? Have you kept your new year’s resolutions? I always think when spring starts it is actually the time to celebrate new year. It’s at this time of year we see buds appearing on the trees, the bulbs are out in full flower, glorious swathes of yellow from the daffodils and, my personal favourite, the multi-coloured array of tulips we can sometimes be lucky enough to see. I am yet to visit the National Trust’s Standen House near East Grinstead for its annual tulip garden show, but I am hoping to get that ticked off my list in 2020. We are lucky enough in Seaford to be surrounded by the South Downs and here we get to see spring in its beauty, with all the little lambs making appearances. Nothing screams spring more than lambs bouncing around the fields. We used to visit the Sheep Centre in East Dean at this time of year and even once saw a lamb being born (which blew my then 2-year-old’s mind!).
The sheep centre is now closed and most of their sheep are found at Middle Farm, which is well worth a special family visit where you can bottle feed the new arrivals. It is this time of year that sometimes brings a change in weather – those lovely spring days when the sun shines through the blue skies and we can actually feel a little more warmth in the air. Combine that with the growth around us in nature and I think it makes for a real positive feeling. We start to look forward to the summer and the lighter evenings and all that the rest of the year has in store for us. I really do feel that spring and all the natural changes at this time of year are when we should be looking forward and feeling more positive about what we have and where we are, not those grey January days. I hope you can get out and enjoy some of what spring has to offer, a walk through the Crouch Gardens, a stroll along the beach or maybe even a walk up and around Seaford Head if you are feeling ambitious.
