Seaford Scene March 2020

Seaford Choral Society Seaford Choral Society continues to grow. Come and join us for our Spring Concert on Saturday 21st March at 7.30pm at Seaford Baptist Church. The concert opens with one of those triumphant and exciting pieces, written for a special occasion (in this case, the birthday of Queen Mary ll). Henry Purcell was the court composer at the time and continues to be recognised as one of the great British composers. ‘Tune all your voices and instruments play, to celebrate this triumphant day’ exclaim the assembled choir. We are joined by a chamber orchestra with trumpets and oboes as well as four ‘well-tuned’ soloists.

Vespers are evening services and this one must have been something special. Tickets are available, as usual, from Newberry Tully Estate Agents, members, or on the door. You can reserve a ticket, just to be sure, on our website: www.seaford-choral-society.com. Join us on Facebook. Seaford Choral Society is a successful high profile local community choir. We are looking to forge partnerships with local businesses to develop what we are able to achieve, particularly encouraging young singers. Supporting businesses are promoted at our events and in all our publicity. Please make contact via the website above if you would like to sponsor the choir for a season or for a particular concert.

Seaford Baptist Church has excellent acoustics. Wherever you sit, you will be surrounded by the sounds of 80+ voices, trumpets, oboes and a variety of string instruments. Just what Purcell planned as a birthday tribute. ‘Happy Birthday to You’, your Majesty, on a grand scale. From an intimate, if triumphant birthday ode we move to a work written by Mozart, to be sung in Salzburg Cathedral on an important feast day. His second Vespers, this one written to be accompanied by an orchestra with trumpets (there’s a theme here!), is ‘Vesperae solennes de confessore’ and it displays all the pomp and ceremony that was expected at the time. We will sing all six movements in succession, but in the cathedral they would probably have been broken by prayers and antiphons to make a whole service.
