Perched above the sea or a stone’s throw from stunning historic monuments, on tiny but exquisite islands or in the heart of favourite cities. All amazingly fabulous. These are Sicily’s most exclusive hotels. On an island just waiting to be explored, we take you on a tour of some gems of hospitality. EAST COAST We’ll begin at the magnificent coast lapped by the Ionian Sea, and head to Taormina, which recently saw the long-awaited reopening of the legendary San Domenico Palace Taormina, under the banner of Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts. 111 completely refurbished rooms and suites, the most glamorous and soughtafter of which is the Royal Suite on the top floor of the hotel. Returning along with the hotel is Ristorante Principe Cerami, led by multi-award-winning executive chef Massimo Mantarro. More Sicilian specialities, alongside classics of international cuisine, are served at Ristorante Rosso, with its large panoramic terrace; not forgetting the Bar & Chiostro in the garden and Ristorante Anciovi next to the splendid infinity pool. Taormina boasts two Belmond Hotels: Grand Hotel Timeo and Villa Sant’Andrea. The former, a favourite of legends such as Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Marcello Mastroianni, enjoys a location that’s privileged to say the least, next door to the extraordinary Greek Theatre of Taormina. Its suites include the Presidential, occupying almost 100 square metres and with 300 square metres of terrace. In the evenings you can sip a proper cocktail in the iconic Bar e terrazza letteraria, then enjoy a gourmet dinner by Michelin-starred executive chef Roberto Toro at Ristorante Otto Geleng (which seats just 16). For lovers of traditional fare, either at lunch or dinner, there’s Ristorante Timeo. Overlooking the gorgeous bay of Mazzarò, Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea is an aristocratic early-twentieth-century residence which retains all its charm today. Guests keen to swim can choose between the private beach with its elegant cabins and Beach Bar, or the heated infinity pool. After that, you can sample all the freshness of the sea at Ristorante Oliviero, treat yourself to a massage in the privacy of the garden or play an 18-hole round of golf on the green slopes of Mount Etna. Even older is the historic palace in the heart of town that’s home to Hotel Metropole Taormina. A cult

Tra le suite, la Presidential di quasi 100 metri quadrati, con terrazza di 300 metri quadrati. La sera sorseggiate un drink fatto a regola d’arte nell’iconico Bar e terrazza letteraria, per poi gustarvi una cena gourmet dell’executive chef stellato Roberto Toro al Ristorante Otto Geleng (soli 16 posti). Mentre per gli appassionati della tradizione, sia a pranzo che cena c’è il Ristorante Timeo. Affacciato sulla bellissima baia di Mazzarò, si trova Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea, in un’aristocratica dimora di inizio Novecento di cui ancora oggi conserva tutto il fascino. Per un bagno gli ospiti possono scegliere la spiaggia privata con eleganti cabana e Beach Bar, oppure la piscina a sfioro riscaldata. Per poi gustare tutta la freschezza del mare al Ristorante Oliviero, concedersi un massaggio nell’intimità del giardino, o giocare una partita nel campo da golf 18 buche alle pendici verdeggianti dell’Etna.
