Kersti Suur, Merle Varik
Abstract This research study was a literature review, the aim of which is to describe the main symptoms associated with Ménière’s disease, its influence on the patient’s quality of life and the ways to alleviate the patient's main symptoms. This thesis is theoretical and based on a literature review, which corresponds to the thesis purpose and research objective. In this paper there are 27 sources used, published in the years 2007–2017. The main symptoms of Ménière’s disease involve hearing loss, tinnitus and episodic vertigo. The most common comorbid psychiatric disorders are anxiety and depression. The effect of Ménière’s symptoms on the patient's quality of life is limited activity due to tinnitus, hearing impairment, sound localization problems, vertigo and balance disorders. During the vertigo episode, the patient may be completely immobilized and any movement may cause a new attack. Impaired balance and vertigo cause a loss of physical capabilities, which in turn affects the quality of family life, professional and social activities, and leads to a decrease in the quality of life. According to a psychodynamic interpretation, vertigo is associated with separation anxiety. Lack of communication due to hearing loss causes sense of loneliness and social isolation.
