Aire Urbanovitš, Reet Urban
Abstract PCOS-related health problems are not usually very acute and therefore little attention is paid to counselling women with PCOS. As a result of various studies, it is known that after receiving PCOS diagnosis, women did not receive enough information and advice to cope with the diagnosis. The aim of the study was to describe common health problems related to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and give an overview of the possibilities to mitigate these problems. To achieve the aim of the research study 42 evidence based research articles were used, out of which 31 were original research articles and 11 were review articles. Used sources were released between the years 2007 to 2017. The common health problems related to PCOS are irregular menses, hirsutism, weight problems, obesity, metabolic syndrome, infertility, acne, anxiety, depression, stress and low self-esteem. The most important possibility to mitigate these problems is a healthy lifestyle, starting with weight reduction through healthy nutrition and physical activity. The best results will be achieved through the cooperation between informed health care specialists and a motivated patient. Keywords: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), health problems
