Influence of screen media on the development of children up to 3 years of age

Abstract The present thesis is a theoretical literature review. The aim of this thesis was to provide an overview of the consumption of screen media among children up to three years of age and its impact on their language development, behaviour and motor development. Various scientific databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar were used to search for topic-related articles. Scientists’ opinions about the role of screen media use in the development of children are different. Early consumption of screen media is considered to inhibit language development, but there is also the opinion that viewing and reading e-books together with the child helps develop their speech. Not all studies support the connection between the early-onset screen media use and attention deficit disorder at a later age. The impact of screen media on the development of fine motor skills has been shown but it does not confirm whether children are good at using smart devices because they are well-developed, or they are more skilful because of the early use of smart devices. In conclusion, infants are allowed to use screen media since the age of six months, and as the age increases, the screen time reaches up to three or four hours per day.
