Helen Mets, Margit Lenk-Adusoo
Abstract The present article is based on theoretical, qualitative review of literature, in total 32 literary sources were used. The objective of the article is to describe the impact of screen media on the health of schoolchildren and the possibilities to prevent and mitigate the negative impact of screen media. The use of screen media has become increasingly popular in recent years, making it an important part of the lives of today’s schoolchildren. The use of screen media has both positive and negative effects on the physical, mental and social health of schoolchildren. The effect on the physical health of schoolchildren is mainly negative as it reduces physical activity and encourages or causes a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, trouble sleeping and musculoskeletal disorders. The impact of screen media on social and mental health of schoolchildren can be both positive and negative. The positive effect mainly manifests itself as a possibility to communicate with distant friends and relatives as well as make new friends. On the other hand, excessive use of screen media is also associated with psychological problems such as anxiety and depression, behavioural problems and negative influence on interpersonal relationships.
