Nursing students’ experience of supervision during clinical internship
Reet Urban, Merli Lillepuu
Abstract The aim of the qualitative empirical study was to describe nursing students’ experience of supervision during their clinical internship. A written narrative method was used to collect data. Data were collected during June and July 2017 in an electronic (e-mail) way from third year nursing students (n=8). Students wrote a narrative about one internship experience. Narratives were analysed in an inductive way and data were presented deductively according to the three periods of internship: 1) introductory period; 2) clinical practice period; 3) final assessment and feedback period. At the beginning of internship students experience various emotions and feelings and they have different expectations for the supervisor’s behaviour and activities. Students describe their experience mainly through the supervisor’s personality, but also through attitudes and activities. Positive attitudes of the supervisor reduce students’ anxiety and fear during the whole training period. Supervisor properties, supervision skills and willingness to supervise are important factors for students to increase learning motivation and to follow the supervisor as a role model. Students are very attentive to the professionalism of the supervisor. Keywords: clinical internship, supervision, nursing student
