Simulation training in radiography education

Eda Kull, Jaanika Reimaa, Tiina Kukkes

Abstract The aim of this study was to describe the implementation of simulation training in radiography education and training, the advantages and limitations from the user perspective. Methods: This study is a literature review based on peer-reviewed literature sources, including 5 review articles and 11 original research articles and one Master’s thesis published in the years 2007 to 2016. Simulation training involves the use of different simulation devices and ways like dummies, phantoms and role-plays that are supplemented by computerbased simulations, providing the student an opportunity to acquire technical skills in their own pace in a safe environment, followed by immediate feedback. Role-plays make it possible to rehearse interaction with the patient. Disadvantages of simulation training emphasised by students involve mostly technical barriers to the access of simulation training options. The advantages of simulation training highlighted by teachers include an opportunity to assess the knowledge acquired by students and the reduced time meant for supervision. They are of the opinion that simulation training is suitable for initial development of skills but it should not replace clinical training. They identify a number of limitations regarding the use of simulation training, e.g. lack of resources, increase of expenses, infrequent use of simulation devices. Simulation training is a beneficial way of instruction. It is used to supplement the traditional ways of teaching and learning.
