MSc Strategic People Management, for example, enables you to apply for Corporate Membership of the CIPD as a registered HR practitioner and research undertaken as part of your studies can often be of benefit to both the student and employer.

We believe that learning is a partnership between lecturing staff and students, and this is particularly evident in our postgraduate courses. We recognise the journey of academic development that some students have taken already on their path to exploring postgraduate opportunities. As aspiring subject experts, you will work with your course team to develop knowledge and proficiency in your subject. You will be expected to take the lead in the exploration of issues, for your benefit and that of your fellow students, enabling you to investigate topics you are passionate about.

Our approach to delivery for all programmes puts our online learning environment, Brightspace, at the heart of the learning experience. We take a blended approach to course design and delivery, so you will experience online activities and resources to complement on-campus seminars and tutorials. The blend will differ across courses, depending on the nature of the subject matter and skills you are expected to develop.

EXPERIENCE

Teaching styles applied on your course will vary depending on your subject. Some course teams employ a problem-based approach to learning, using the challenges and complexities of practical situations to drive learning and subject exploration.

I don’t think I would have gone to university if I’d had to travel very far as it would be very stressful as a single parent to commute and study while raising two young children. I feel very lucky to live close to a university that offers such good quality courses, including the courses I wanted to do. The University is in a great location and so close to amenities, I really enjoy an evening sitting in Cult Café with my uni friends!

I completed a BSc (Hons) Psychology and Criminology degree at Suffolk because of my interest in people, I wanted to learn about individual differences and why people behave the way they do. With the knowledge gained, I thought I would be better equipped to support people from all walks of life. I applied for the MSc Applications of Psychology with the aim of becoming a psychologist or counsellor.

I have enjoyed all the modules in my postgraduate studies and have really felt the step up from undergraduate level. The course offers a wide variety of learning approaches from seminar debates to diagnosis scenarios and practical placements. It has changed my view of the world and empowered me to have passionate but controlled discussions.

Graduating with 2:1 and continuing to Masters level study is not bad for someone with dyslexia and dyspraxia, who wanted to give up in the second year. I’ve persevered and progressed thanks to the amazing support from lecturers, friends and one-to-one support. The whole experience has been so empowering… If I can do it then so can you!

Take in the view

Suffolk has some of the UK’s finest coastline, nature reserves, rivers and forests. The cycle tracks, paths and boat hire make it easy to explore the landscape that inspired famous artists Constable and Gainsborough. Paddle board on Alton Water or visit Orwell Park or Rendlesham Forest for some peace and inspiration.

The University is in a beautiful location, it’s lovely to be able to look out of the lecture theatre window and see the boats coming into the docks.

Throughout Suffolk you will find many towns all with their own unique characteristics and history, packed with an eclectic mix of independent shops, eateries and local artisans, there is plenty to explore. You might want to start with The Saints, a quirky and interesting thoroughfare in Ipswich town centre, visit Ipswich Museum, stretch out on a climbing wall or challenge yourself in an escape room.

Our campus is located on the stunning Ipswich waterfront, home to a lively restaurant and bar scene popular with students, locals and visitors. Offering entertainment from sailing opportunities in the marina, to performances at DanceEast, and many other events that take place across the year.

The main campus in Ipswich is a 10-minute walk from the town centre which is packed with independent shops, restaurants, pubs, cafés, theatres and cinemas. Just a short walk away is Portman Road, the home of Ipswich Town Football Club and several parks, all offering beautiful open spaces for picnics and exercise. There are a range of festivals, events and exhibitions held across the town and an exciting calendar of sporting events to get involved with, including the Ipswich Half Marathon.

Our Student Life team is on hand to provide information and guidance about recommended and accredited accommodation, supplied by private providers.

The recommended on-campus halls of residence, Athena Hall, is located on the Ipswich waterfront just 300 metres from the Waterfront Building and adjacent to the James Hehir Building. Local shops and amenities are close by, and the town centre is just a 10-minute walk away. Housing up to 590 students, Athena Hall offers a mixture of flats with communal spaces and self-contained studios, all with en-suite bathrooms.

Brightspace is our online learning environment and enables your digital learning. It is an adaptive learning system allowing you to work flexibly at a pace to suit you. Our team of Academic Skills Advisers, Learning and Teaching Librarians and Digital Learning Designers deliver a range of workshops, both face-to-face and online, all targeted at developing key academic skills such as referencing, academic reading and critical writing. Individual support is available at our main campus in Ipswich and can be booked online with our team who will offer you advice and guidance on all aspects of academic work, including assignment help, maths and statistics, research skills and lots more. We also offer a wealth of support on our website with workshops and toolkits to help get you started on your academic journey.

A Masters requires a new level of independent learning but also gives you more freedom to make informed opinions. I like the diversity of the lecturers and how their different experiences complement each other, this really allowed me to broaden my knowledge base. I’d advise new students to make use of tutorials, it really helps to build communication and relationships with the lecturers – they are there to help you. Throw yourself into the seminars and critical discussions and just enjoy the experience!

I work for the Suffolk Youth Justice Service and felt it would really benefit my practical knowledge to be able to apply theory to the reasoning and justification of offending. Having looked at the MAs available, the University stood out as fresh, welcoming and the lecturers are involved in designing the course areas; I knew they would be very knowledgeable in their subject. Thankfully my work allowed me a flexible working pattern so I could continue working full-time while studying.

I left school at 15 with no GCSEs and feeling there was no hope for the future. I had my daughter at 18 then my son at 20, and it was then that I realised I needed to make my future count. I graduated from my BSc (Hons) Criminology in 2015 with a First and having just finished my MA, I have been seconded to a new role and even been able to negotiate a pay rise due to my increased application of knowledge from the course.

Everyone’s path is different, just because you haven’t followed your education path straight from school, it is never too late — I feel so proud of my achievements.

Chaplaincy

Our multi-faith community welcomes students from a diverse range of backgrounds. Our chaplaincy at our main campus in Ipswich is open to staff and students of all faiths and no faith.

Counselling

We can provide independent, impartial and professional counselling, or we can signpost you to the appropriate support services. Our counselling support is confidential and offers you the opportunity to discuss issues such as exam anxiety, low mood, stress, relationships and personal issues.

Disability support

We are here to support you if you have a disability, a mental health difficulty, or a specific learning need. We aim to create an environment that is accessible and inclusive for all students. We will work with you to ensure that appropriate individual support is in place and advise you on your eligibility for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). Your individual needs and support arrangements can be discussed before you start your course or at any time during your studies.

Health and wellbeing

We can provide guidance on how to register with a local GP, as well as how to access sexual health and wellbeing services. Maintaining good mental and physical health is important and we offer as much help as we can to support your life as a student.

Financial support

Our expert Advisers can support you with financial advice during your studies and we have partnered with Blackbullion, an e-learning platform which can equip you with money skills and help you with financial planning.

Student Life Mentors are experienced students who can offer support and information about the University. Your President of Education and President of Activities and Wellbeing are elected by the student body, you, to manage the direction and day-to-day running of the SU. We are here to facilitate the change that you ask for.

SU Course Reps collect feedback, registering your views for discussion at meetings with senior staff from the University.

School Officers make sure students from every school are represented at Student Council and School Officer Forum and dedicated SU Liberation Officers representing minority groups ensure the inclusion of everyone’s voice.

It’s perfect for people looking to develop their athletic abilities, play competitively and be part of a team. We currently have many teams who compete weekly in a regional league. 3D productivity suite

Our high specification Stratasys printers have a broad range of printing capabilities and are ideally suited for taking early stage prototypes through to late stage development. They use more sophisticated printing materials, e.g. biocompatible resins, than basic printers which opens up a number of possible uses. You can engage with the team to discuss your potential project and gain technological expertise. These facilities are available to all students and staff regardless of their course and can support a range of interesting projects.

DigiTech Centre

The DigiTech Centre is a collaboration between the University of Suffolk and BT, with funding from the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and is based at the heart of Adastral Park, one of Europe’s largest science and technology business parks. The Centre has world-class co-working specialist laboratories making Suffolk a recognised destination for industry-focused ICT and Digital Creative study programmes and an internationally recognised destination for Continued Professional Development (CPD) in digital technologies.

The School has worked in partnership with commissioners and employers in the development of health-specific CPD and postgraduate programmes such as the Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing, Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Practitioner District Nursing and Masters programmes in Community Nursing and Public Health Nursing.

School of Social Sciences and Humanities

The School has developed CPD provision relating to teaching, including a selection of Subject Knowledge Enhancement short courses. We have worked with Suffolk County Council to deliver bespoke courses to encourage and support Social Workers to return to the profession and support their existing Social Work staff with best practice. It is also possible to undertake individual credit modules from some of our postgraduate programmes, which can contribute towards a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate.

Integrated Care Academy (ICA)

The ICA is an exciting partnership between the University of Suffolk, the local Integrated Care System, Suffolk County Council, Healthwatch Suffolk and others from the voluntary and community sector. The ICA offers co-produced programmes to assist local services in providing the best possible joined-up care to keep people healthy and independent for as long as possible. The ICA enhances quality of care, quality of life and health equality through its core programmes which include education, training, and workforce development.

I love my job, so I didn’t apply for the MBA as a ‘spring board’ into a new role, it was the broad curriculum that appealed to me; a wide breadth of learning that touches each part of the business world. I wanted to develop my skills to assist with progression towards my bigger goals such as leadership, setting out strategy, direction and organisational culture.

The support I received to do the MBA as an apprenticeship was great – dedicated staff to answer any questions was a bonus and meetings with my line manager to ensure my learning remains relevant.

The course has provided me with the additional skills, knowledge and understanding to enable me to take a more wholesome and systemic approach to work. I now approach complex business cases with a more confident and comprehensive outlook. Networking with lecturers, professors and other students has been hugely beneficial both from an academic and a professional perspective. The University has made me feel so welcome, it treats its students with respect and is very inclusive. Fitting in the MBA with full-time work and a family was a daunting prospect but having timetables published in advance and clear dates for critical deadlines has helped. HARRISON BULLETT

Being from the local area, I was familiar with the University and had heard a lot of good things about it. I found a course that really interested me and it was also an ideal follow on from my undergraduate degree in BSc (Hons) Biomedicine that I had just gained at another university.

I particularly enjoyed the Independent Study module where we were encouraged to research a topic we found particularly interesting and present our findings, as well as the Cell Therapy and Tissue Engineering and Stem Cell Biology modules. My passion for these areas has developed over time and I’m keen to continue studying by applying for a PhD, however I’m also interested in commercial or NHS laboratory roles.

The University of Suffolk has a different feel to other universities. Being a smaller and younger university, it feels less formal and more personal. All of the lecturers, particularly the Course Leader, are approachable and helpful. Due to the number of students on the course, we get to know each other and the lecturers really well which allows us to get very detailed, specific feedback on our assignments and progress. The library service is excellent, with the subject librarians offering advice and one-to-one sessions.

The University has a great location on the marina and Suffolk has a great mix of larger towns and rural areas, my favourite place is the seafront at Felixstowe.

This accelerated course aims to prepare existing graduates for an exciting and rewarding career as a Registered Nurse (Adult). You will undertake a range of theory modules across the two-year programme, complemented by clinical practice placements to allow you to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required by nurses delivering healthcare across a wide range of clinical settings.

On successful completion of this accelerated nursing course, you will be eligible to register your qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and practise as a Registered Nurse (Adult). This course is designed to develop practitioners who can safely and effectively meet the healthcare needs of service users across the lifespan, with particular emphasis on meeting the needs of the adult requiring complex care.

ADVANCED CLINICAL PRACTICE

This programme of study has been created to meet the needs of a diverse range of health and social care professionals including nurses, midwives, health visitors and allied health professionals.

It is designed to facilitate the development of knowledge and skills related to advanced clinical practice, mapped and informed by nationally accepted frameworks for advanced clinical practice (Health Education England 2018, Skills for Health Advanced Degree Apprenticeship 2018) to ensure that the programme of study is relevant to contemporary practice. Successful completion of this course can support you in evidencing your learning and progression when applying for career development and promotion in roles associated with an advanced level of clinical practice.

ADVANCED COMPUTING*

MSc

This is a taught postgraduate course aimed at students with a substantial background in computing who want to study advanced computing concepts and technologies, and cover a variety of topics in depth taught by dedicated experts.

The MSc Advanced Computing degree provides you with a wealth of opportunities to choose your own route of specialisation into a computing career. The course includes four core modules (Dissertation and Research Skills, Topics in Emerging Technologies, DevOps, Managing Projects and Teams) and three optional modules from a range offered in artificial intelligence, cyber security and software development.

Core modules will cover aspects that are common across all subdomains of computing, whereas optional modules will include a choice of topics helping you specialise in an area of your preference (cyber security, software development, artificial intelligence). The programme is suitable for students from computing backgrounds who are interested in a career orientated towards an industry role or academia.

Students on the course will have access to library resources, online books, subscriptions to IEEE Xplore and ACM Digital Library, and other related publications. They will also have access to industry-standard cloud tools for computing (TryHackMe, Hack The Box).

The course blends theoretical and practical sessions and uses facilities at the DigiTech Centre, Adastral Park, including the cyber security suite, the network embedded systems labs, the data science and AI labs and the on-campus IT suites.

ADVANCED PRACTICE AND REPORTING IN COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY COLONOGRAPHY PgC

This course will allow you to develop knowledge and expertise to advanced practitioner level in Computed Tomography Colonography (CTC) and it is approved by the Society and College of Radiographers. The programme’s modular approach enables our students to gain skills in performing CTC examinations and the reporting of CTC examinations and images. It includes underpinning knowledge of large bowel anatomy, pathology and physiology as well as the practical performance of CTC and producing a report.

You will be introduced to the principles of developing a CTC service and the course is ideally suited to those about to, or who are currently undertaking CTC examinations in their Trust hospital. It is a flexible programme of study allowing for stand-alone modules to be taken, or completion of all three 20 credit modules to obtain the full PgC.

The course will be jointly run by the University of Suffolk and Peterborough City Hospital (part of the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust).

APPLIED CYBER SECURITY*

MSc

The programme is a taught postgraduate conversion course which will provide you with the skill sets necessary to demonstrate competence and confidence across a wide range of real-world domains where security considerations are paramount.

Cyber security is not just a technical subject, but also incorporates elements of other disciplines such as psychology, information management, strategy and policy. You will learn how organisations, systems and people can be subverted for malicious purposes, and also learn how to think like a malicious actor, for only then will you be able to develop effective and practical countermeasures. Technical topics, with a strong practical element, include digital forensics, applied cryptography and network security. Crucially these are balanced by a rounded coverage of social engineering, strategic cyber security and topics on intrusion detection, prevention and recovery.

Early modules focus on building the foundational skills required for later topics, and you will have the opportunity to explore any or several of the modules studied in more depth through an appropriate extended project. The programme is designed for students from non-STEM and STEM backgrounds.

APPLICATIONS OF PSYCHOLOGY

MSc

For those eager to expand and apply their knowledge of psychology further, this course is ideal. It provides appropriate progression toward vocational psychology roles, which increasingly require doctorate training. Gaining the applied experience and knowledge this course offers can help students gain a place on doctorate programmes by better equipping them to compete for a place.

There are five mandatory core modules which include Educational Psychology, Clinical Applications in Psychology and Assessment, Psychology Placement, Research Design and Analysis, and Self-Directed Research. Optional modules provide the opportunity to identify a specialism which include (subject to staffing) Health Psychology and Forensic Psychology.

It is a requirement to have a Bachelors (Hons) degree in Psychology for this programme, however, if you have a degree in another discipline but are looking to make a career change into Psychology, you can apply to undertake a Graduate Conversion Course in Psychology accredited by the British Psychological Society.

CHILDHOOD STUDIES MA/PgD/PgC

The course takes an informed, critical, and dynamic approach to the academic study of childhood and encourages students to develop their own interests and professional practice.

We draw on perspectives from sociology, social policy, geography, anthropology and history, and critically examine the changing landscape of childhood in modern society.

The course is informed by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) framework and is committed to a child-centred philosophy. Modules reflect on the principles of protecting the rights and interests of children, the diverse and global conditions of childhood, and the increasing importance of their participation in society.

This taught Masters programme uses a flexible, blended approach to learning; face-to-face lectures, seminars and tutorial support are complemented by online resources, interactive learning tools and self-study materials.

This programme has been developed for students looking to supplement an undergraduate degree, or senior professionals interested in specialised or advanced study of childhood. It will be of particular interest to those wishing to be, or already employed, in the children and young people’s workforce.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY AND COUNSELLING MSc

The programme offers advanced professional and clinical training for students who wish to practise as psychotherapists offering cognitive behaviour therapy and psychodynamic therapy. Having this dual-track approach to understanding mental health widens opportunities to work in a wide range of mental health settings, both statutory, voluntary and private. This course gives you the capacity to work from different theoretical approaches, understanding research and its application to clinical theory and practice.

A dissertation will allow you to explore your integrative approach to therapy and evidence-based practice. The course will enable you to work towards applications for registration and accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work towards eligibility for accreditation with the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

There is a substantial evidence base for cognitive behaviour therapy for a range of mental health diagnoses including depression, anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. This MSc also offers you the opportunity to practice approaches to time limited psychodynamic therapy with an evidence base for depression.

COMMUNITY NURSING

MSc (Progression Route)

This course can only be undertaken by nurses with live registration on Part 1 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and who have successfully completed a relevant postgraduate diploma.

It provides a progression route specifically for those students who successfully completed a PgD in Community Nursing which either did, or did not, incorporate a definitive research methods module. For those who have already completed the research methods module, a further 60 credit dissertation module is provided. For those who have not completed the research methods module this is included at 20 credits with a dissertation module at 40 credits.

The aims of the course are:

The dissertation can take several approaches; qualitative primary research, quantitative primary research or systematic literature review although this decision should be influenced predominantly by the nature of your research question, what is practicable and your own preference. You may also undertake a service evaluation although this must be discussed and agreed with your course leader. The expectations of this course should challenge you; however we hope that you will also enjoy it by choosing a topic of personal and professional interest for your studies.

The two modules are mandatory and are delivered over three terms.

COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY PgC

This PgC will allow you to increase your knowledge and skills in the specialist area of Computed Tomography (CT). This is often a challenging area of practice due to the advancing technology, the rising demand for services and the autonomous role of the practitioner. It is anticipated that this course will allow you the opportunity to include a combination of theoretical and clinical knowledge to your current practice and support the advanced practitioner roles required as part of the four-tier structure within CT.

You will learn the theoretical and technical aspects of CT, underpinned by work-based learning in practice. You will also enhance your knowledge and understanding of the role of the radiographer within CT whilst developing an appreciation of service development to manage effective delivery and patient-focused care.

The programme takes an integrated approach to modular learning and this is reflected in the teaching strategy. A range of techniques based on blended learning are employed, for example interactive lectures, student-led seminars, group work, online learning environments, problem-based learning/evidence-based learning, workshops, case studies and clinical experience. You will be actively encouraged throughout the programme to connect theory with practice, which is crucial in any vocational programme.

Preparing for your future: all students will already hold posts across the healthcare sector, nonetheless completion of this programme will enable students to progress into advanced practitioner/lead roles in CT. Students completing the PgC element of the programme will be encouraged to apply for Advanced Practitioner accreditation with the College of Radiographers.

CREATIVE AND CRITICAL WRITING MA

This MA course is ideally suited to those who want to focus on their passion for creative writing whilst engaging with the most up-to-date debates in critical theory.

Designed to give you the opportunity to specialise as writers, critics and practitioners, the course offers you the chance to nurture your development as a reflective scholar and enhance your abilities as a creative writer, thinker and communicator.

You will experience learning in the interconnected fields of creative writing and critical thinking. The MA combines practice-based learning and a choice of specialisms in historical fiction, children’s literature, adaptations, a writerin-residence module and a final dissertation which will be a substantial body of professional-standard work in fiction, creative non-fiction, or critical writing.

DIAGNOSTIC RADIOGRAPHY*

MSc (pre-registration)

This course will allow current graduates with an appropriate first degree to undertake a two-year MSc programme in diagnostic radiography. It is designed to develop practitioners who can rapidly respond to a challenging and diverse environment in which traditional health and social care roles are transforming in response to wider demographic, social, economic and political change. According to the latest workforce census data from the Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR, 2020) there was a 9.6% vacancy rate in diagnostic radiography posts. It was also highlighted in the Richards’ review (Richards, 2020), that a significant increase in the radiographic workforce is needed to staff the Community Diagnostic Hubs/Diagnostic Assessment Centres.

This course will prepare students with relevant and current knowledge, skills and understanding to achieve the level of competence essential for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR) for professional practice as a diagnostic radiographer. Students will undertake a range of modules which will equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills including theoretical and practice elements. Placement learning is an integral part of the course developing knowledge and understanding of radiography whilst linking theoretical and practice components.

EDUCATION STUDIES

The MA Education Studies offers learning and career development opportunities for educators and leaders across educational sectors. Masters level study is viewed by many as being essential for career progression and supports professional development in education and related fields. This course gives our students the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the current landscape in education and engage with wider theories and issues to encourage critical thinking and hone higher level skills.

The course is designed to enable you to study alongside your busy work and home life and generate opportunities for you to focus on areas of particular interest and relevance to your own experience, context and practice. HISTORY MA

This MA is designed to take your previous experiences of studying history to the next level. Whatever your motives for postgraduate study – for personal fulfilment, to progress in a career where the skills of a historian are required or valuable, or in preparation for doctoral studies – our MA in History will provide you with the necessary understandings, knowledge and skills.

The course explores topics at a national and transnational level which are some of the most pressing of our own times and at the forefront of current historiographical enquiry: the contested nature of knowledge and truth, environmental change, war and conflict, sexuality and gender, violence, identity and selfhood, decolonialisation, migration and globalisation.

This is a new course which will support your development as a current practitioner in the specialism of paediatric imaging. It will enable radiographers to extend their theoretical knowledge and skills in the area of imaging and to influence service improvement within the workplace. During this course, you will learn the theoretical aspects of child psychology and development. The skeletal and developmental differences in the skeleton will be explored alongside the role of projection imaging which will be underpinned by your work-based learning in practice. PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE: INTEGRATED CARE MA/PgD/PgC

This course is designed to provide a progressive pathway of Masters level study for people working in health and social care. It will empower and enable you to lead and develop integrated services to promote and enhance service delivery.

Contemporary practice denotes a distinctive shift towards integrated care for preventative, outcome-based health and care solutions which meet the needs of people, stakeholders and governance requirements. The course is designed to provide learning which promotes inclusive, values-based and sustainable care delivery in a political and evidenced-based context.

This Masters programme is designed to enable students to contextualise, lead and transform integrated care services to enhance quality outcomes for people, professionals and organisations. You will develop enhanced leadership, coaching skills and a critical understanding of public health and care complexities in both a regional and national context. This course is designed to facilitate Health Visitors and School Nurses who have a postgraduate qualification in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) to attain a full Masters degree. By building on previous postgraduate study undertaken for specialist practice (SCPHN), this course continues the development of critical thinking skills required to provide high level judgement and clinical decision making in contemporary public health nursing.

This course enables you to reflect your individual interests and to demonstrate some originality of thought and analytical creativity in the study of your chosen area.

RADIOGRAPHIC REPORTING OF THE CHEST AND ABDOMEN PgC

This course is designed for radiographers wishing to expand their scope of practice and develop the theoretical and clinical knowledge base required to interpret chest and abdomen radiographs and construct clear and concise medical image reports in line with local protocols.

The course consists of two modules during which you will learn the theoretical principles of interpretation of chest and abdomen radiographs. Alongside work-based learning in your department, this will develop your competencies to provide clinical reports.

Successful completion of the course will also help evidence your role as an advanced clinical practitioner in relation to Health Education England’s framework for Advanced Clinical Practice (2017). The course is also approved by the Society and College of Radiographers.

This course is jointly run by the University of Suffolk and the East of England Imaging Academy, Norwich where most of the teaching will be delivered. This is a facility designed specifically to teach radiology and offers access to a picture archiving and communication system linked to image reporting workstations.

SCITT Level 7 courses offer a range of different opportunities to undertake teacher training in schools as part of a SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training programme), including the opportunity to train full-time in schools. Courses are available as tuition or salaried, and are available at both primary and secondary phase. It would be best to check each provider’s website to identify the different options which are available.

The major focus of the courses is to prepare trainee teachers effectively as specialists in their chosen subject or phase and to produce teachers who are confident and competent in the craft of teaching, as well as being active in the school environment. The course brings together the very best of academic training to produce Early Career Teachers (ECTs) who consider and reflect upon the purposes of education, as well as having high levels of knowledge, understanding and skills in the learning and teaching of children.

In 2019, 98% of trainees were appointed to teaching posts in schools across the eastern region as Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs).

SPECIALIST COMMUNITY PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING (with pathways in Health Visiting and School Nursing)

PgD

This programme has been designed for practitioners who wish to develop knowledge, understanding and skills of public health approaches to practice and work in the field of specialist community health nursing, health visiting or school nursing.

Such a context of practice requires that health care professionals develop a comprehensive range of skills enabling to develop and lead population-based services designed to tackle inequalities in health, prevent ill health and work in partnership with individuals, families and communities.

The programme is committed to ongoing development of Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) practitioners and is contemporary in its content and delivery. A blended learning approach is used with time spent in university and practice-based learning; students are supported in practice by an experienced practice supervisor and assessor. Innovative methods of teaching incorporate virtual learning to enhance student focused education.

Current developments in practice are recognising the need for SCPHN practitioners to have enhanced critical thinking, research knowledge, and to become reflective responsive public health practitioners with the potential to lead the delivery of quality services for individuals and communities.

SPECIALIST PRACTITIONER DISTRICT NURSING PgD

Practitioners who undertake this programme will be highly motivated individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to developing District Nursing practice based on the integration of critically appraised evidence with professional expertise. It is expected that our students have a wealth of previous experience to be utilised, challenged and built upon. The programme embraces a facilitative approach to learning, co-ordinated to support the practice element at the centre of the programme.

This programme is underpinned by three core values:

• Practice-focused development

Further contributory values include collaboration, partnership, professional expertise and innovation. These values shape and inform both the theory and practice to ensure that high quality care is delivered to a rapidly changing and diverse primary care environment.

The curriculum in this programme has been developed to ensure that our practitioners are prepared to respond to the demands of an advanced level of practice in the contemporary context of primary health care.

All modules are mandatory and are mapped against the Standards for Specialist Education and Practice (District Nursing), endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and also mapped against the education and practice standards developed for District Nursing by the Queen’s Nursing Institute (2015).

STRATEGIC PEOPLE MANAGEMENT, STRATEGIC PEOPLE MANAGEMENT WITH EXTENDED PRACTICE MSc

Our MSc course with extended practice, offers a unique world-class, training and education opportunity to join a popular and highly regarded, level 7 CIPD accredited programme focused on individual student support opportunities and high-quality teaching. We help you develop into a ‘career ready professional’ reflecting your level of experience, through applied practice, problem-based learning and research-informed teaching.

You will gain the skills set to strategically manage, retain and develop people and resources more effectively, through skilfully crafted modules that underpin your understanding of the psychological make-up of employees, including the strategic management and development of workforce talents in a rapidly changing business world, though their lifecycle within an organisation.

The course is flexibly delivered by highly experienced practitioners and academics who are CIPD members and fellows, with guest practitioners occasionally invited to enrich your learning. Teaching is through a series of quarterly weekend skills labs and blended block sessions combining weekly online and on-campus classes. Assessments are integrative in nature, ensuring reduced frequency of modular assignment submissions. The varied mode of delivery offers invaluable opportunity to flexibly combine work with study.

Learners enrolled on the two-year, extended practice route option, will embark on a minimum of six months placement embedded into the course curriculum gaining insightful professional practice experience in businesses based across Suffolk and the East Anglian region.

SUFFOLK EXECUTIVE MBA MBA

The Suffolk Executive MBA (SEMBA) offers business knowledge at a senior level of management and advances leadership skills. Undertaking this qualification will bolster your confidence and demonstrate determination to succeed in your chosen career as you develop analytical and strategic management skills using concepts derived from a wide range of academic disciplines. With its flexible and practical nature, the SEMBA is designed to fit in with existing career commitments, supporting managers across several different industries and sectors who want to boost their career prospects.

Our students get involved in live management issues through various projects and assessments, developing leadership and management skills, undertaking both group and individual work. This blended approach combines a variety of traditional classroom learning supported by additional forms of online study and the Postgraduate Workshop Series. The Postgraduate Workshop Series aims to address a wide range of current management issues and offers an opportunity to discuss these themes with academics and practitioners.

We actively encourage our students to fundamentally question generally accepted management and leadership understanding by drawing upon the full range of social scientific knowledge. This develops an enhanced awareness of the complex nature of organisations and their functioning, alongside the transferable skills of evaluation and analysis required of senior management. This enables our students to respond creatively and effectively to the challenges presented by a global business environment, and broadens the range of management responsibilities they confidently undertake.

The SEMBA offers three possible specialisms: Integrated Care, Leadership or Marketing. In order to gain the specialism element, you should take the relevant optional module and complete a management project within that discipline.

There are two options to study a Certificate or Diploma within the SEMBA programme and these options allow students/organisations an opportunity to explore certain specific disciplines: PgC Business Administration (60 credits) or PgD Business Administration (120 credits).

PgC Business Administration (Integrated Care) is also an enrollable award as well as exit awards of SEMBA.

SENIOR LEADER APPRENTICESHIPPOSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (SUPPLY CHAIN)*

PgD

The programme is designed for those in, or aspiring to, senior management positions or those looking for conversion from specialist fields to that of general management. It aims to develop analytical and strategic management skills, offering flexibility for managers and senior leaders wanting to boost their career prospects.

The programme is built around four key framing objectives: Diversity, Advocacy, Responsibility and Application (DARA).

Diversity

As business increasingly transcends national boundaries, a knowledge of various business cultures and management methodologies is essential. You are urged to recognise multiple perspectives and learn from one another’s cultural experience.

Advocacy

The approach to management we seek to cultivate in apprentices is one of diplomacy, support and enablement, rather than top-down command and control.

Responsibility

Managerial influence rightly raises questions of responsibility. The ethics of business, and its practice, underpins each of our modules.

Application

Apprentices are encouraged from the outset to put into practice what they learn in the classroom in their own place of work. Additionally, we provide multiple opportunities for live consultancy experience throughout the programme.

Apprentices are encouraged to question accepted management and leadership understanding by drawing upon the full range of social scientific knowledge. This develops a greater awareness of the complex nature of organisations and develops the skills of evaluation and analysis required of senior management.

Graduates of the diploma would be able to take the additional 60 credits and study for their SEMBA course following completion of the diploma (at an additional cost).

HIGHER AND DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS

Our apprenticeships are offered at Levels 5–7 and apprentices are awarded a Foundation degree (Level 5), a Bachelor degree (Level 6) or a Masters degree (Level 7) at the end of their course.

The Apprenticeship Hub

Based in the Atrium Building, the Hub houses a dedicated Apprenticeship team who are on-hand to support apprentices and employers on a learner’s journey, working across various professional and support services within the University. It is the Hub’s mission to promote the opportunities for work-based learning within our local community and with our partners across the country.

As an apprentice, you will have a contract of employment enabling you to earn while you learn. You will also receive on-the-job specialist training and will spend at least six hours per week completing off-the-job training. Lectures take place either at the University or within specialist teaching facilities agreed with the employer; using Brightspace, our virtual learning environment or within your workplace. You will continue to build your professional network and strengthen your CV from the start.

Funding

There are no tuition fees, as these are met by your employer. As you will be in full-time employment you will not be eligible for additional financial support either through Student Finance England or directly from the University.

We have been developing and delivering Higher and Degree Level Apprenticeships since 2017, and work in partnership with employers to deliver these, meeting their business needs whilst improving staff productivity, development and ultimately job retention.

Assessments

Apprentices will undertake a range of assessments, including workbased projects, assignments, exams, presentations, and group work. Apprentices must bring Apprenticeship Certificates England evidence of Level 2 (or equivalent) English and maths qualifications with them prior to commencing their programme. During curriculum delivery, apprentices will be required to demonstrate how they are developing their English and mathematical skills in the workplace beyond Level 2.

Apprentices will need to complete all on-programme elements, any mandatory qualifications and completion of a compliant off-the-job training log before entering Gateway. Gateway is when the employer and apprenticeship provider give the go-ahead that the apprentice is competent in their role and is prepared enough to proceed to the end-point assessment (EPA). Upon completion, apprentices will receive their University Award (e.g. Bachelor degree) and a certificate of completion.

How to apply

As a prospective apprentice you must be in employment with a levy-paying organisation and will need to apply for an apprenticeship at the University via your employer. Employers contract the University of Suffolk to deliver the apprenticeship training and prospective apprentices are sent an application to complete. Apprentices will usually be expected to meet the published entry requirements for the degree and must provide evidence of all qualifications to the University before starting the course.

Studying a Masters has given me the opportunity to improve my study skills, develop research strategy and tap into the expertise of the lecturers. Learning new ways of doing things has really increased my confidence too. The size of the cohort allows us to have a personal experience, especially with the laboratory practicals and having experienced students from the course helping as laboratory assistants was really valuable. I’ve also enjoyed the peer support from our WhatsApp groups. There is a lot of support for students at the University. Personally, I really benefitted from the Critical Thinking and Postgraduate Writing Skills courses as well as additional maths support offered by the Learning Services team. Whilst on the course I was employed part-time to mentor Year 11 students for GCSE maths and after completing my course I’m hoping to continue academic research by applying for a PhD.

My advice to anyone joining the University is to get involved with additional activities with students from your course and support each other.
