Down    to    Earth western Finland during her collaborative reclamation project “Tree Mountain – A Living Time Capsule”. The monumental earthwork, which took 14 years to develop from the initial design concept to its completion, is both the first man-made virgin forest and the world’s largest monument of international scope, with an unprecedented duration and dedicated not to the human ego but to future generations. On 5 June 1992, at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, the project was announced by the Finnish government to alleviate global ecological stress. Subsequently, 11,000 pines were planted by 11,000 people on site according to a complicated mathematical pattern. After the inauguration by the Finnish President in 1996, the planters received numbered certificates to protect the trees for the next 400 years, since only then the bioremediation process will be completed and the ecosystem established. It is a contract between generations, connecting the planters and their offspring with non-human actors such as the trees and the resettled wildlife.

Vibha Galhotra is an Indian artist whose large-scale installations address the shifting topography of the world under the impact of globalization and growth. She sees herself as being part of the restructuring of culture, society and geography – of New Delhi and the world. Responding to the rapid environmental changes and re-zoning of land, Galhotra embodies the dense urbanization and jungles of steel and concrete through intricately sewn metal ghungroo tapestries – fusing historical grandeur with shimmering veils of steel. In varied mediums such as photography, animation, found objects, performative objects, installations and sculptures, her art creates experiential spaces. In the context of “Down to Earth”, her installation “Beehive” (2007) will be shown.
