As part of the exhibition “Down to Earth” she will show her sculpture “Four Atlases of the World and one of Stars” (2009) and collages of the series “Midden Mother” (2020).
Andreas Andreas Gursky zählt international zu den wichtigsten zeitgeGursky nössischen Fotograf*innen. Er ist für seine großformatigen Aufnahmen bekannt, die sich durch Wiederholungen und höchste Detailgenauigkeit auszeichnen. Gursky richtet seinen künstlerischen Blick auf das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Raum und insbesondere auf die menschlichen Eingriffe in Natur und Umwelt. Seine Arbeit „Antarctic“ (2010) wie auch die Serie „Ocean“ (2010) basieren auf Satellitenbildern und machen deutlich: die Erde ist ein Wasserplanet, dessen Oberfläche zu drei Vierteln von Ozeanen bedeckt ist. James Lovelock, der zusammen mit Lynn Margulis die Gaia-Hypothese entwickelte, schreibt dazu: „Als die Astronauten uns 1969 die Schönheit unseres Planeten, vom Weltraum aus gesehen, präsentierten, waren wir sprachlos. Es musste erst der Science-Fiction-Autor und Erfinder Arthur C. Clarke kommen, um festzustellen, wie falsch es war, diesen Planeten Erde zu nennen, da er doch ganz offensichtlich aus Meer besteht. Auch wenn das 50 Jahre her ist, dringt diese Entdeckung, dass wir auf einem Ozeanplaneten leben, erst jetzt ganz langsam in die angestaubte Wissenschaft der Geologie vor. Es ist beschämend, dass wir viel mehr über die Oberfläche des Mars und seine Atmosphäre als über manche Teile unseres Ozeans wissen.“ Andreas Gursky is one of the most important contemporary photographers. He is known for his large-format photographs which are characterised by repetition and the highest level of detail. Gursky turns his artistic eye to the relationship between the human and space and in particular to human intervention in the natural environment. His work “Antarctic” (2010) as well as the series “Ocean” (2010) are based on satellite images and demonstrate that the Earth is a water planet with three quarters of its surface covered by oceans. James Lovelock, who developed the Gaia hypothesis together with Lynn Margulis, wrote: “We were stunned when the astronauts revealed in 1969 the beauty of our planet seen from space. It took Arthur C. Clarke, the science fiction writer and inventor, to observe how wrong it was to call this planet Earth when, clearly, it is Ocean. Despite being fifty years ago, this discovery that we live on an ocean planet is only just beginning to penetrate the dusty science of geology. It is shameful that we know far more about the surface of Mars and its atmosphere than we know about parts of our oceans.”
