Summer 2020

Welcome to Putney’s 69 th season!

It was the summer of 1951, and in a world still reeling from the aftershocks of the Second World War, our parents—devoted educators and dreamers—led 18 brave high school students on the first Putney trip to Europe, making the 10-day crossing by steamer. Our dad’s world view was deeply shaped by his wartime service; our mom’s by a childhood in occupied Holland. They shared what many believed was a naive and unusual mission, especially in a time before air travel: To use “summer vacation” to change the lives of young people by ushering them out of their comfort zones and empowering them to travel off the beaten track, to connect meaningfully with people of different cultures, and to embrace what is new and different with a supportive group of peers and leaders who challenge them and keep them safe. By doing so, our parents believed they could help contribute to a more peaceful world.

Our world has changed radically in the 69 summers since, but Putney’s mission has not. We remain passionately devoted to being much more than just another summer experience. Instead, we provide innovative programs that foster maturity, self-confidence, and personal discovery while deepening global awareness and cultural understanding.

The best part of this work we do with our creative colleagues here in the Putney Barn is exactly what our parents also loved the most: the transformative enthusiasm of our returning students— filled with tears of joy and tales—lives visibly changed as they hug their fellow students and leaders goodbye. Ultimately it is that happiness and growth that all parents seek for their kids before they head off to blaze impressive paths for themselves in college and beyond; it’s what we at Putney work year after year to create and deliver.

The descriptions in this catalog can only scratch the surface of what a summer with Putney means. Please visit our website for more complete descriptions and details. We also urge you to call us about any programs that interest you so that we can get to know you better.

We hope you will join us!

Best,

We’re not new at this. Our perfect safety record gives parents comfort and reflects decades of institutional knowledge and expertise in performing successful risk management, supporting young travelers, and delivering high quality programming.

Lasting Benefits

Our programs instill confidence, maturity, and passion for cultures and ideas that are new to students—benefits that extend far beyond summer.

These experiences often serve as springboards for students to develop lifelong interests.

Outstanding Leaders

We choose our highly qualified leaders with expertise in the destinations to which they lead as well as the ability to inspire students. Many have advanced degrees and take time away from successful careers to lead because they love our students and believe in our mission.

Great Students

We carefully review applications and accept only students who have the ability to thrive on a Putney program. Our goal is to accept young people who are well adjusted, bright, curious about the world, and who can contribute positively to their group.

Innovative Programs

We continually strive to develop and improve our programming in response to world issues. Our students benefit from a global network of friends and partner organizations that has been built over seven decades and includes teachers, farmers, artists, activists, NGOs, and many others.

It’s Fun!

While our programs all have ambitious educational goals, our founders believed that you learn best when you’re having fun. For 68 years Putney has made learning fun and we can guarantee that’s not going to change in our 69 th summer. Please join us!

The Putney Difference

Excellent Group Dynamics

Our leaders facilitate a positive group dynamic and build a community where everyone is included, celebrated, and invited to participate. Putney students return home with increased maturity, lasting friendships, and broadened perspectives.

Student Ownership

Students learn and grow the most when they are given clear expectations and a chance to take ownership of their experience. While our leaders supervise and direct each program, students actively lead important daily tasks, activities, and discussions.

High Expectations

We have clearly communicated expectations of behavior that are designed to keep students safe and bring out the best in them. Our simple rules—no smoking, drinking, or drugs, as well as a few more—promote safety and build trust within the group.

Global Stewardship

We partner with communities around the world through longterm collaborations. Our students benefit from authentic interactions with local people. As a result, they learn to value community empowerment, cultural diversity, and environmental sustainability.

Safety & risk management

A commitment to safety is the bedrock of our program operations. The full-time Putney team, led by Directors Jeff Shumlin and Governor Peter Shumlin, is large enough to operate innovative programs all over the world, yet small enough to ensure that all families receive the highest level of support.

Experienced Leadership

We hire and train only the best international educators— college graduates with high levels of maturity, judgment, and expertise, significant experience working with young people, and certifications in CPR and First Aid.

Open Lines of Communication

We maintain open lines of communication with parents, students, and leaders. While programs are underway, we can be reached by phone 24/7.

An Inclusive Environment

We celebrate diversity on our programs and expect the same of our students. We do not tolerate bullying and act decisively to safeguard the physical and emotional safety of our students.

Program Setup & Emergency Support

We only offer programs in stable locations with the infrastructure to handle urgent situations that might realistically arise. Our vetting process includes making site visits, monitoring locations, reviewing safety records, and more. Our students are covered for emergencies by the world’s leading medical evacuation plan.

Going beyond for 69 years

Since 1951 Putney students have trekked the globe, immersing themselves in cultures and communities as their lives are changed.

1951 – The first trip departs by steamship for Switzerland, Italy, France, and Holland, led by founders George and Kitty Shumlin. The ocean crossing takes ten days each way—three weeks of an eight-week program.

1957 – During the Cold War, Putney becomes the first organization to take high school students to the U.S.S.R., exploring Moscow and Leningrad and living with Russian students on the Black Sea.

1972 – Putney’s first program in Africa explores Tanzania and summits Mt. Kilimanjaro.

1983 – After 32 years, George and Kitty retire from Putney Student Travel, passing the reins to their sons, Pete and Jeff.

1986 – Chinese Revolutionary hero Bill Hinton opens doors for Putney in China. Students bicycle through coal-mine country in Shanxi Province and live with Chinese families in an agricultural commune still closed to westerners in Shandong Province.

1990 – Putney inaugurates its first program dedicated entirely to service, in Montserrat in the Caribbean following Hurricane Hugo.

1999 – The second floor of the converted cow barn where Putney’s office had been for 40 years is emptied of hay, renovated, and converted to the current office.

2005 – At Yale University, Putney introduces programs focused on global awareness, with students addressing issues of poverty, sustainability, development, healthcare, and much more.

2007 – National Geographic and Putney partner to create National Geographic Student Expeditions. Learn more about this collaboration on page 69.

2017 – The New York Times and Putney partner to create New York Times Student Journeys. Learn more about this collaboration on page 70.

2020 – Putney invests in carbon offsets to cover carbon emissions on group flights, launches programs focused on careers to inspire future leaders, and brings back its classic Mount Kilimanjaro program.

They share a commitment to safety, a passion for exploration, and an enthusiasm for facilitating positive group dynamics. Putney leaders are not only advisors, guides, and mentors to their students, but also role models and friends during the summer and beyond. Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Putney Student Travel, we encourage our students to be travelers, not tourists—to be global stewards and global citizens—yet we acknowledge that the act of traveling causes significant waste: items we discard in-country, pollution from international flights, and contributing to waste in regions where infrastructure is limited. Here are the first steps we’ve taken to mitigate these impacts.

Waste Awareness & Reduction

Last year we embarked on a Barn project to cultivate an organization-wide awareness of our waste stream. We implemented a composting system and e-waste recycling project at the Putney Barn, which reduced our landfill waste by 75%. As an extension of this project, we designed curriculum that encourages our leaders and students to minimize waste and raise awareness of our impact as travelers.

Carbon Offsets for Air Travel

This year, Putney is investing in a carbon offset program to cover greenhouse gas emissions from all student and leader group flights. We are working directly with Vermont-based NativeEnergy to identify and invest in community-scale and sustainable projects that would not otherwise be realized. This year’s offset contributions will help fund a wind energy installation project in India.

Trek off the beaten path and experience the world as a traveler, not a tourist. Immerse yourself in the landscapes and cultures of a place, adventuring and building authentic connections along the way.

Discover what makes a land and its cultures unique. Ski the rugged backcountry of Patagonia, meet a sheep-farming family in the Faroe Islands, summit Kilimanjaro, sample Croatia's culinary heritage, hike in the Italian Dolomites, and more.

Delve deeper into place and culture through student-initiated independent projects. Build on your talents, learn new skills and perspectives, engage with local people, and return home with a better understanding of our diverse planet.

I wouldn’t change a single thing. This was the best summer of my life.

Dates & details are subject to change.

We expect Putney participants to maintain high standards of personal behavior. Since they are encouraged, within the context of our programs, to take leadership roles and to make some of their own discoveries, students whose parents require them to be under constant surveillance or who are likely to act irresponsibly, use drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, or behave in a disruptive manner, should not apply. Students who violate our few rules are subject to dismissal at our sole discretion. Parents are responsible for making arrangements for, bearing the cost of, and providing supervision for dismissed students’ immediate travel home, even in situations that require extended international travel. In such cases, no refund of the program tuition is given. Students dismissed from programs will not receive credit for community service hours completed prior to their dismissal.

At Putney we take pride in our reputation for careful, thorough planning and attention to detail. The descriptions of our programs are based on our experiences in previous summers and our plans for this summer. It is inevitable that some details described here will not happen exactly as presented. To get the most out of the Putney experience, participants need to be flexible in responding to unforeseen situations and creative in taking advantage of unexpected opportunities. We expect Putney participants to share responsibility for the success of their experience.
