A space personified

arlier this year, on April 5th, Dino Gonçalves opened his first showroom in his homeland. This architect and interior designer talks of how this space could very well be his home while he takes Essential Madeira on a private tour of the space. The Showroom by Dino Gonçalves – Cool & Chic – is located in the galleries of one of Madeira's most luxurious hotels, the Savoy Palace, in Funchal. Between a Danish table, Moroccan ceramics and Madeiran wicker chairs, Dino Gonçalves blends into the five environments that he created there. It is about objects he himself chose based only on one criterion: Good taste. 'I will shamelessly place a hundredthousand-euro piece right next to a 100 euro one. And that's the gimmick. Buying expensive is easy. Now the issue with taste is
to know how to strike a balance; it takes boldness and comfort to do so', explains Dino Gonçalves. It was that comfort and boldness that led to him decorating a ball in Monaco, in 2011. As a guest, he made it a point to emphasise to the princess how she would be able to be part of the décor. And in 2012 he was back, this time overseeing the décor of the ball. His career has led Dino Gonçalves to work with some of the world's best-known brands and allowed him to travel to places such as London, Milan and Dubai. In the United Emirates, for instance, he worked with Armani. Atop the world's tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa, the Madeiran was in charge of overseeing the floral arrangements to be displayed at the hotel. Highlights of www.essential-madeira.com 10
