Junior Cycle SUBJECT:
Gaeilge What will I learn in this subject? Junior Cycle Irish builds upon the language developed during primary education. The learner’s vocabulary is both reinforced and enriched at this stage and the language skills (listening, speaking, reading, spoken interaction and writing) are further developed. Emphasis is placed on promoting and developing awareness: language awareness, cultural awareness as well as student self-awareness as a language learner. How will I learn in this subject? Students learn about the structure of the language and how it works. Students enhance their appreciation of the language itself by exploring texts, including multimodal texts. Through appropriate language tasks based on such texts, students gain an understanding of the differences between spoken and written language. They observe different aspects of the language from the way it is used on a daily basis to how it is expressed in writing. Students become involved and engaged in all of the language skills: listening, reading, spoken production, spoken interaction and writing. They discuss, compare and investigate a variety of texts, including literary texts, developing their communication, thinking and critical skills. Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School? Junior Cycle Irish seeks to enhance and develop the skills students bring to post- primary school from primary school. How will this subject be useful to me? Irish is the one of the official languages of the state. Learning a language is a life skill. You will be encouraged to use Irish effectively and confidently, both personally and in communicating with other users in the language community, to appreciate the language and to gain a better understanding of the culture of our language and country. Assessment? You will complete two Classroom Based Assessments in Irish; both are in 3rd Year. You will complete a Language portfolio and Communication Task. After this you will take part in an Assessment Task based on CBA2 which will be marked by the State Examinations Commission and is allocated 10% of your overall mark. There is an exam in June of 3rd Year which can be taken at Higher or Ordinary Level. 9

Links will be made between individual topics and backed up with a variety of learning aids to aid every style of learner. Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School? If you were to compare a Junior Cycle Higher Level Paper to a 6th Class test, you would notice a big change in difficulty. However, the three years you spend engaging with the Junior Cycle course in CP Setanta will more than prepare you for whatever the Junior Cycle holds. The content you were taught in Primary School will be the first stepping stone on this path. New skills such as completing a Classroom Based Assessment, working on OneNote and Teams, and working with surveys on Forms, will be added to your skillset, and therefore help you take your Mathematical skills to the next level. How will this subject be useful to me? As the world becomes more and more technologically advanced, your ability to work well with numbers is as important as ever. As well as opening up great job opportunities later down the line, being competent at Maths will also help your decision making, resilience, memory, and strategic skills on a day-to-day level.
Assessment? Throughout the three years in the Junior Cycle, students will do a mixture of the typical end of semester tests, project work, and Classroom Based Assessments (CBA’s). The arrangement of these aims to give a true reflection of the Mathematical and creative talents the students have. How will I learn in this subject? You will learn through both the practical element and the theory element. Both complement each other, in that, the work you do in the practical aspect of the class will directly relate to the theory side. It is a hands-on subject, and you will learn by working on your own initiative. You will be given various projects to complete and there will also be a theory aspect that deals with materials, tools, machinery and design. Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School? Like all technology subjects many students would not have much experience using hand tools or machinery when they first come in, however Mathematics is a big part of this subject and some primary schools may have experience using Microbits. Students will also build on their knowledge from primary school on the importance of different forms of Technology in society and also the importance of sustainable living using technology. How will this subject be useful to me? This subject is an excellent subject if you like working on your own initiative creating, designing and building your own projects. It allows students to take control of their own learning and is a subject that is very much learning through doing. Students are entrusted with using machinery and hand tools to manipulate materials into the required shape. Assessment? Students will complete two Classroom Based Assessments. Their project, worth 70% will be specified and marked by the State Examinations Commission. The terminal written examination worth 30% is taken by students at the end of 3rd Year.
