Junior Cycle SUBJECT:
SPHE
(Social, Personal and Health Education) What will I learn in this subject? In SPHE, students have opportunities to revisit different themes which focus on developing self-awareness and respect for others, and the skills of self-management, communication, coping, decision-making and relating to others. The skills involved are vital for self-fulfilment, for living in communities and for full engagement in learning beyond SPHE. Personal reflection, resilience and empathy are also promoted through SPHE. You learn more about yourself through four different strands throughout the three years which are ‘Who am I?’, ‘Minding Myself and Others’, ‘Relationships and Sexuality Education’ and ‘My Mental Health’. How will I learn in this subject? You will learn in a variety of engaging methods including activity based, group work, peer work and most importantly through reflective learning. Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School? Yes, very much so. You will be familiar with themes you did in primary school like friendships, relationships, communication, mental health, adolescent development and changes in our lives. How will this subject be useful to me? It will help you discover more about yourself, your peers, and about the changes young people undergo throughout their lives both physically, mentally and emotionally. Assessment? Students will be assessed through quiz-based assessments. In 2nd Year students will undertake a Classroom Based Assessment worth 10% that goes towards their Junior Cycle.
