How will I learn in this subject? Over the three years of the Junior Cycle course in Home Economics you will learn in a variety of ways in order to develop and acquire skills in cooking, sewing, reading, writing, analysing and creating to name but a few. You will work with textiles and food both independently and in pairs or in groups. Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School? In Primary school you will have learnt about topics like your body and the correct foods to eat and perhaps you would have done some sewing as part of an art project. You will continue to learn and develop upon these skills if you choose to study Home Economics in Post Primary school for your Junior Cycle. How will this subject be useful to me? You will be able to use information you have studied in your everyday life; from looking after yourself to shopping and caring for others. You will be more experienced at managing your resources and time as well as learning invaluable lifelong skills such as cooking and sewing. Assessment? For the Junior Cycle students will complete two classroom based assessments. In 3rd Year students will do a practical food skills examination worth 50% and a final written examination in June worth 50%. 23
