Junior Cycle SUBJECT:

Music What will I learn in this subject? In Junior Cycle Music we begin learning about music from scratch. You do not need to play an instrument or have done any music before in order take up this subject in secondary school. In music you will learn how to read and write music and how to play a variety of instruments including tin whistle, keyboard and ukulele. You will also learn about different types of music from hundreds of years ago to modern music that you listen to today. How will I learn in this subject? In our music classroom we learn about music in many different ways. We learn through playing instruments and performing together. We learn through listening to all kinds of music and we learn through composing our own pieces of music. Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School? You might have learned a little bit about music in primary school and maybe even played an instrument. You might have also done some singing with your primary school class. You could also have learned about the orchestra and listened to different types of music. How will this subject be useful to me? Being able to play an instrument is a lovely skill to have. Playing music or listening to music can help you feel relaxed, or it can even help your concentration. Singing songs or playing instruments as a group in music class can help you build confidence and make friends. There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved in school performances such as recitals, award ceremonies and celebrations. Assessment? Music is assessed in the same way that all other subjects are in Coláiste Pobail Setanta with full school exams at the end of Semesters. In Spring we assess students through continuous assessment which in music is often project work. At each assessment stage in the year music students complete a practical exam where they perform one or two pieces of their choice for their music teacher. At the end of your three years of Junior Cycle Music you will complete a written music exam.We also complete two CBA’s (Classroom Based Assessments) in music. 25
