VANAEA HAPRUSE SÜNDROOM JA GERIAATRILINE ÕENDUSABI Frailty syndrome among the elderly and geriatric nursing care Olga Ontin, Merle Varik
Abstract Frailty is not an illness, but a syndrome that combines the effects of natural aging with the decline of functional capacity. Chronic inflammations, changes in the skeletal, muscular, immune and endocrine systems contribute to the onset of frailty. Older adults with frailty experience fatigue, they have less energy, unintentional weight loss and decrease of hand and leg strength. All this slows their recovery processes and increases the mortality rate. They often need acute and prolonged medical services, which increases their risk of being hospitalized or placed in nursing homes. The purpose of this study is to describe frailty syndrome among the elderly and appropriate nursing interventions. 41 scientific articles were used to compose this paper. All sources were published between 2008 to 2018. It is important that nurses use correct assessment tools to identify frailty in an early stage. Identifying frailty in an early stage and using purposeful and scientifically approved nursing interventions can decrease the rate of frailty. Nursing interventions have to focus on nutrition, mobility, independent living and preservation of quality of life.
