KANEPI RAVIOTSTARBELINE KASUTAMINE Therapeutic use of cannabis Inga Ploomipuu, Anneli Tuisk
Abstract Despite of the known adverse effects of cannabis use, there is an increasing amount of evidence to support the therapeutic potential of medical cannabinoids. Cannabis is being studied as a potential treatment for medical conditions, such as chronic pain, neuropathic pain, cancer pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, epilepsy, sleep disorders, as an appetite stimulator in cancer treatment etc. The aim of this literature review was to determine the therapeutic and adverse effects of medical cannabinoids. The literature sources were found from different databases (PubMed, EBSCO, Google) and analysed according to their compliance with the aim of this review. It was found that there are beneficial effects of cannabinoids in reducing spasticity, neuropathic pain, chronic pain and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. There was also some evidence with insufficient quality that cannabinoids reduced depression and spasms as well as improved quality of sleep. Adverse effects were very common, but most of them were estimated as reasonably well tolerated. Serious adverse effects occurred very rarely. However, due to a small number of participants it was often not possible to detect statistically significant differences between treatment groups and placebo groups in most of the studies. Therefore, further studies are needed to assess the efficacy and safety of cannabis products in clinical trials with prolonged treatment periods.
