Effectiveness of therapeutic exercises on lower back pain and functional status of the spine Marit Salus, Dmitri Kurganov, Triin Kont
Abstract Lower back pain (LBP) is one of the fastest-spreading musculoskeletal diseases in Europe and all around the world. It is estimated that 80% of people experience it once in their lifetime and 7-10% of the cases become chronic. It is most common among people of working age and its emergence affects work ability, personal well-being and quality of life. If left untreated, it can worsen functional status of the spine (FS). The aim of the intervention was to evaluate the effectiveness of 4-week period therapeutic exercises on relieving pain and improving FS of the lower back. Empirical study was carried out in which 5 people (4 females, 1 male; mean age 43.7±8.7 years; ranging from 32 to 49 years) participated in a therapeutic exercise program (2 training sessions per week; 60 minutes per session), focusing on spinal mobility, core strengthening and stabilization exercises. Subjects were assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for LBP severity and Spinal Mouse for FS of the spine one week before and immediately after the last therapeutic exercise session. Results showed improvement in the average VAS value before and after the therapeutic exercise program (4.6±0.72, 1.4±0.8, respectively) and also a better average FS value in flexion (96.6°±12.32; 104.1°±7.52, respectively) 185
