DAYS 8–16 I COMMANDER ISLANDS/ KAMCHATKA PENINSULA/KURIL ISLANDS Sail the wildlife-rich waters of the Commander Islands, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve; visit Bering Island; and ride Zodiacs on the pristine Zhupanova River. In stunning Avacha Bay, dock at the port town of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, framed by snow-capped volcanoes. Then discover the Kuril Islands, a mostly uninhabited volcanic archipelago with a complex political history. Meals: 9B, 9L, 9D
DAYS 1–7 I ANCHORAGE, ALASKA, U.S./ NOME/PROVIDENIYA, RUSSIA/CHUKOTKA AND KORYAK COASTS Arrive in Anchorage and fly to Nome to embark our ship. Cross the Bering Strait to the Russian port of Provideniya, and enjoy a cultural music and dance performance. Spend several days exploring Koryak and the Chukotka Peninsula on hikes and visits to coastal villages. National Geographic Orion or National Geographic Resolution through Day 22 Meals: 6B, 7L, 7D
DAYS 17–22 I KORSAKOV/HOKKAIDO, JAPAN Cross the Sea of Okhotsk to Korsakov, then set sail for Hokkaido, Japan. Browse the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples in Abashiri, and venture to spectacular Shiretoko National Park. Dock in Kushiro, and head inland to visit the wetlands of Kushiro Shitsugen National Park and the misty lakes of Akan Mashu National Park. Meals: 6B, 6L, 6D DAYS 23–25 I NIIGATA/TOKYO/U.S. Disembark in Niigata and board a bullet train to Tokyo. Delve into this vibrant city on a tour of its temples and neighborhoods, and enjoy free time to discover it on you own. Depart for home after breakfast on our final day. Chris Rainier Documentary Photographer Chris Rainier documents endangered cultures and languages around the globe and directs the Cultural Sanctuaries Foundation. He co-founded National Geographic’s Enduring Voices Project, and served as a contributing editor for National Geographic Traveler.
