A Note From Editor

Cuando iniciamos la planeación para visitar algunos sitios del municipio de La Paz, no vislumbramos que iríamos de sorpresa en sorpresa durante el recorrido, quizá debido a que El Pescadero, Todos Santos, El Triunfo y Los Barriles los tenemos muy cerca de Los Cabos, y, ¡creíamos conocerlos! En la zona parece brotar un estilo de vida enfocado en la sustentabilidad ambiental, histórica y cultural.

En contraste con su extensión territorial, El Triunfo posee un vasto pasado enmarcado por la minería, a través de sus museos, se robustece la perspectiva sobre la identidad local.

Puerto Chale es el punto más remoto que visitamos en esta ocasión, conocíamos muy poco. El lugar nos asombró con paisajes calmos, un mar de fragatas y otras aves que se concentraban en lo que parecía ser una asamblea constante. Los relatos que escuchamos entorno a los barcos hundidos cerca de Isla Santa Margarita simplemente hicieron volar nuestra imaginación.

Para quienes residimos en Los Cabos, les recordamos que estamos rodeados de ecosistemas complementarios y encuentran tan solo a un par de horas o menos.

Es hora de preparar la agenda para este verano. ¡Esperamos que te sorprendas tanto como nosotros!

When we started planning to visit some sites in the municipality of La Paz, we were pleasantly surprised by the many unexpected discoveries we encountered. Despite the proximity of El Pescadero, Todos Santos, El Triunfo, and Los Barriles to Los Cabos, we realized a unique way of life here that we had yet to anticipate. This area idealizes the focus on sustainability, rich history, vibrant art, and diverse culture.

Despite its large territory, El Triunfo has a rich history in mining, which is showcased in its museums. This perspective helps to further establish its unique local identity.

Throughout our journey, we set foot in Puerto Chale, which turned out to be the most remote location we ventured to. Despite our lack of prior knowledge about this place, we were thrilled to discover the tranquil landscapes and the incredible presence of frigate birds and various other bird species that congregated there regularly. Moreover, the tales of shipwrecks near Isla Santa Margarita left us spellbound and filled with wonder.

For those of us who reside in Los Cabos, you might be interested to know that unique ecosystems surround us in just a couple of hours or less.

It's time to prepare your agenda for this summer. We hope you will be as surprised as we were! We can't wait for you to discover all the fun and adventures that El Pescadero, Todos Santos, El Triunfo, and Los Barriles offer.

En temporadas recientes, el equipo de Tendencia ha realizado muy interesantes viajes por Baja California Sur, << seleccionando un municipio por edición>> y, en esta ocasión, recorrieron el municipio de La Paz. Como invitadas especiales se unieron al viaje Sofia Zuñiga y Fernanda Athie, su compañía y percepción de los lugares enriqueció la excursión.

In recent months, theTendencia team has traveled to various municipalities in the State of Baja California Sur, featuring a different one in each issue. In this edition, they showcase the municipality of La Paz, with Sofia Zuñiga and Fernanda Athie joining the team and adding their unique perspectives to the trip.

Por los lados este y oeste, el municipio colinda con asombrosas playas y una diversidad orográfica que va desde planicies, hasta la parte alta de Sierra de la Laguna. Es un gran reto para viajeros ávidos de nuevas experiencias practicar actividades como: montañismo; senderismo; apreciación y clasificación de flora y fauna; “glamping”, deportes de vehículos todo terreno, bicicleta, motocicleta o montar a caballo. En el mar, se puede practicar desde el nado libre hasta buceo con y sin tanque; pesca; esquí acuático y por, supuesto, visitas a famosos sitios históricos, islas e islotes.

Hacia el oeste, se encuentran Todos Santos y El Pescadero. Su crecimiento y economía se basan principalmente en el turismo; no obstante, el desarrollo económico también es resultado del interés por bienes raíces. Proveen una atmósfera de tranquilidad, sin prisas, con tardes de teatro al aire libre, galerías de arte y música; un directorio con gran variedad de restaurantes y festivales gastronómicos.

On the east and west sides, the municipality is surrounded by beautiful beaches and diverse terrain, including the Sierra de la Laguna plains and highlands. Adventure seekers now have a thrilling opportunity to partake in various activities, including mountaineering, hiking, appreciating flora and fauna, "glamping," all-terrain vehicle sports, biking, motorcycling, and horseback riding. In the ocean, one can enjoy free swimming, snorkeling scuba diving, fishing, water skiing, and visiting historic sites, islands, and islets.

Towards the west, you can find Todos Santos and El Pescadero. These areas have flourished thanks to tourism and an increase in real estate investment. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful and calm environment, with options for open-air theatre, art galleries, music, and a diverse selection of restaurants and food festivals.

Un sitio imperdible es Puerto Chale, está ubicado justamente frente a las islas Creciente y Santa Margarita. El estero es un auténtico paraíso del ecoturismo, acompañado por el misticismo de una interesante neblina. El atractivo más conocido es la observación de ballenas durante buena parte del año.

El Triunfo es una población que después de conocer, querrás regresar una y otra vez. Caminar por sus calles es como viajar al pasado, a la época minera. Los mejores años económicos de El Triunfo fueron hace aproximadamente 250 años, tiene encantadores lugares que preservan la historia, como muestra están el Museo del Vaquero de California y Museo Ruta de Plata que hacen remembranza a esos años de la minería. Tienen varias opciones de restaurantes, te recomendamos probar fish & chips en el Toto Frito. ¿Y por qué no? Hospedarse algunas noches en Cabañas El Triunfo Hotel. La Sra. Lupita aún conserva el oficio del tejido del “cogollo, <<que es la parte interna de la palma seca>> para hacer canastas, cestos y diferentes enseres. Ahora que, si de adrenalina se trata, una opción es aventurarse en la tirolesa, tienen cinco divertidas líneas para cruzar entre la montaña.

A must-see destination is Puerto Chale, located near the Creciente and Santa Margarita islands. The vast estuary offers an excellent ecotourism experience and is shrouded in a fascinating mist that adds to its mystique. You can also spot whales here for a significant part of the year.

After visiting El Triunfo, you will surely want to return. Exploring the town on foot, and maybe even staying overnight at Cabañas El Triunfo Hotel, feels like stepping back in time. El Triunfo enjoyed its economic heyday around 250 years ago, and it still boasts charming spots that showcase its history, such as the Museo del Vaquero de California and Museo Ruta de Plata, which are reminders of its mining past. Don't miss out on trying the fish and chips at Toto Frito during your visit. Additionally, Mrs. Lupita offers unique items made from the "cogollo," the inner part of a dried palm tree. Skilled artisans use this material to create beautiful baskets and other articles. The zip-line experience is an excellent option for those seeking an adrenaline rush. You can enjoy crossing five exhilarating lines between the mountains.

En todos estos lugares, la plática con la gente local es motivante, cuentan leyendas, historias y conversan sobre sus oficios, sus antepasados; esos momentos transcurren mientras nos comparten un café de talega y se convierten en agradables tertulias.

The conversational rapport with the local people is motivating in all these places. They tell legends and stories and talk about their trades and ancestors; these moments pass while they share a "Talega" coffee with us and turn into pleasant get-togethers.

Visiting each food stall and kiosk at the Farmers Market is an amazing way to fully enjoy the experience! Farmers Market at Rancho San Lucas operates monthly and seasonally from October to April; their hours vary so check ahead of time, but the day usually starts early from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. It is well worth the visit!

Los amplios ventanales ofrecen una vista plena al campo de golf que se tiñe con un resplandor dorado al atardecer, así como un ángulo cenital a la arquitectura armoniosa de Nobu, es un panorama sin obstáculos del espectacular entorno.

Siria, Afganistán, África, Italia, España y Francia son algunas de las culturas que inspiraron a Paolo della Corte para las recetas de Muna —en su concepto de cocina abierta a los comensales— que enriquecen la generosa oferta gastronómica en Los Cabos.

Su menú incluye aperitivos, opciones crudas—como tartar de salmón noruego, carpaccio de callo, atún de aleta azul, entre otros—; entradas tibias y calientes: bacalao crujiente, callo garra de león sellado, ravioli de ostión, sepia baby frita; ensaladas frescas con un toque de casa y, por supuesto, productos del mar— con opciones como calamar de Marruecos a la parrilla, trucha de Tasmania a la plancha, branzino de Italia al horno de carbón— y de la tierra —su propio estilo de dolmas con acelga rellenos de cordero con za’atar, filete de res USDA, pollo de granja relleno de hongos y ravioli relleno de burrata son algunos ejemplos—. Al finalizar, pide el menú con las dulces propuestas de postre complementarán la velada.

Exciting news - the Nobu Los Cabos restaurant family has expanded! For 2023, the hotel is introducing Muna, a new dining experience that brings the understated, elegant, and romantic atmosphere of Southern Europe to Cabo San Lucas.

The name "Muna" means "wishes" in Arabic, and visiting there will inspire you to look up towards the heavens and admire the stars. The rooftop terrace provides a breathtaking view of the golf course, which looks even more beautiful with a golden hue during sunset, as well as an impressive overview of Nobu's beautiful architecture. Furthermore, the large windows offer an unobstructed panorama of the spectacular surroundings.

Muna offers a gastronomic experience that draws inspiration from various cultures, such as Syria, Afghanistan, Africa, Italy, Spain, and France. The cuisine is presented in an open manner, respecting the original essence of the selected regions.

Some raw options include Norwegian salmon tartar, callo carpaccio, and bluefin tuna. They have crispy cod, seared lion claw callo, oyster ravioli, and fried baby cuttlefish for warm entrees. They also have fresh salads with a homemade touch and seafood options such as grilled Moroccan squid, grilled Tasmanian trout, and charcoal-baked branzino from Italy. Additionally, they have unique dishes made with local produce, like their dolmas with chard stuffed lamb with za'atar, USDA beef fillet, mushroom stuffed farm chicken, and burrata stuffed ravioli.

En cuanto a la mixología, Mbar es un espacio adyacente a Muna, donde se tiene una selección de coctelería internacional, sin faltar las clásicas, todo ponderado magistralmente con el menú mediterráneo. Técnicas moleculares y las raíces de la coctelería tradicional se combinan para incluir diferentes elementos y texturas. El DJ residente se presenta desde las 5:00 pm hasta la 1:00 am. Cada nota orquesta para crear un ambiente inolvidable.

Graviola, es un cóctel de guanábana, que rápidamente se está posicionado como una de las bebidas insignias por los sabores frutales que surgen desde el primer sorbo.

Si hay un evento de golf que se espera año tras año en La Paz, es el Torneo Anual Puerta Cortés por la disciplina y camaradería entre los participantes, el tercer torneo sucedió del 5 al 7 de mayo.

Desde el día de registro los jugadores se divirtieron y pudieron practicar antes de iniciar el torneo, concluyeron ese primer día con un cóctel en Sunset Lounge: un bar abierto desde el cual se aprecian el Golfo de California y la bella ciudad de La Paz.

Los días sábado y domingo, tras el anuncio de salida a las 9:00 am, los jugadores partieron para demostrar sus habilidades en el campo de golf. Las dunas y el escenario sinuoso de este espacio diseñado por Gary Player vibraron con la emoción del momento que era palpable en el animado ambiente.

The Annual Puerta Cortés Tournament in La Paz is a highly anticipated golf event every year. It is known for its discipline and camaraderie among the participants. This Third Edition of the Puerta Cortés Tournament occurred from May 5th to May 7th, 2023.

During registration day, players were able to have some fun and practice their skills before ending the day with a refreshing and delicious welcome cocktail at the Sunset Lounge. This amazing open bar provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez and the city.

Over the weekend, players showcased their golfing talents on the course after the 9:00 am tee-off announcement. The Gary Playerdesigned venue, with its dunes and winding scenery, was filled with palpable excitement and a lively atmosphere.

Es un hermoso pueblo costero del lado del Océano Pacífico en el kilómetro 64 de la Carretera Federal entre Cabo San Lucas y Todos Santos. Esta área es famosa por su estilo de vida relajado junto al mar y sus impresionantes playas. Los viajeros, particularmente aquellos que abrazan la cultura vanlife, se sienten atraídos por las impresionantes playas de Cerritos, Punta Lobos y San Pedrito. El Pescadero is a beautiful coastal town on the Pacific Ocean side at kilometer 64 of the Federal Highway. This area is renowned for its exhilarating activities, relaxed seaside lifestyle, and stunning beaches. Travelers, particularly those who embrace the van-dwelling or vanlife culture, are drawn to the breathtaking Cerritos, Punta Lobos, and San Pedrito beaches. Vanlife is a distinctive lifestyle choice where individuals reside in a vehicle, either full-time or part-time, enabling them to explore the world and enjoy new adventures.

Despite its name, this growing community primarily centers its economic activities around agriculture. As stated in Gilberto Ibarra Rivera's Diccionario Sudcaliforniano, the town of El Pescadero was granted an ejido (a piece of land farmed communally) 1,358-00-00 hectares through a presidential resolution on November 17, 1937 (though it was published on November 17, 1952), benefiting 143 people with expertise in agrarian affairs.

A lo largo de los años, El Pescadero se ha expandido y aprovechado la fertilidad de su tierra, alentados por la bonanza del clima para sembrar vegetales, hortalizas, hierbas aromáticas y fruta. La albahaca, la fresa y el chile son los ejemplares más comúnmente cultivados. Cada año tienen el Festival del Chile, la Fresa y sus Hierbas Aromáticas, celebrado en abril, regularmente donde se pueden adquirir estos productos en el tianguis que se monta costeando la carretera, la verbena incluye una cabalgata de Todos Santos a El Pescadero y por supuesto, el baile.

En El Pescadero se percibe una comunidad muy participativa, llama la atención como sus habitantes tanto locales como extranjeros mantienen un intercambio cultural para integrarse a una vida sustentable.

En nuestra reciente visita, recorrimos algunas huertas que nos permitieron conocer acerca del estilo de vida tan peculiar en el que se desenvuelve este tranquilo ejido. Primero llegamos con los hermanos José Alcides y Carlos Ignacio Villarino Gutiérrez con quienes paseamos por las parcelas donde la sandía, guanábana, aguacates, pepino, tomate y demás vegetales hacen contraste entre el verdor de las hojas, los colores llamativos y portentosos tamaños.

Over the years, El Pescadero has expanded and utilized its fertile land, taking advantage of the favorable climate to cultivate various vegetables, aromatic herbs, and fruits. The most commonly grown produce includes basil, strawberries, and chili peppers, which visitors can purchase at the "tianguis" or open markets along the roadside. In April, a Chile, Strawberry, and Aromatic Herbs Festival celebrates annually, featuring a horseback ride from Todos Santos to El Pescadero and dancing.

El Pescadero is remarkable for its diverse and welcoming community, where local and international residents have created a lively cultural exchange and a sustainable way of living.

During our recent visit, we were fortunate to be granted a guided tour of the lush and serene orchards that make up this tranquil ejido. Our gracious hosts, brothers José Alcides and Carlos Ignacio Villarino Gutiérrez led us through the various plots where various vibrant and healthy crops were cultivated. Among them were juicy watermelons, tangy soursops, ripe avocados, crisp cucumbers, and succulent tomatoes. The leaves of these plants were a sight to behold, with their striking colors and impressive sizes adding even more beauty to the already picturesque landscape. Furthermore, it was fascinating to learn that much of the produce finds its way to distant shores while also being supplied to local companies such as Agricole Cooperativa, renowned for its mouth-watering strawberries and cream, which is much beloved by the community.

Fue interesante conocer que la mayoría de los productos son exportados, no obstante, surten también algunas empresas locales como Agricole Cooperativa sitio famoso entre los locales por sus deliciosas fresas con crema.

Posteriormente, acudimos a Baja Sage, donde Elisa Allen Arias y Roger Herrera Tapia nos platicaron acerca de este proyecto que nació con la idea de sembrar y producir alimentos regenerativos. Con empeño y dedicación, han trabajado el suelo durante tres años para cosechar líneas de plátanos, papayas, distintas hierbas aromáticas, rábanos, betabeles, nopales, tomates, manzanilla, menta, entre otros. En el proceso, han creado alianzas con diversas organizaciones vecinas. Su compromiso y dedicación son evidentes en su trabajo.

El Festival del Chile, la Fresa y sus Hierbas Aromáticas es una celebración que cada año gana más popularidad en la región de El Pescadero, conocida como una de las zonas más fértiles al cultivar alrededor de 500 hectáreas de chile y 20 hectáreas de fresa.

En su X edición, la comunidad se reconoció por estar entre los cinco principales productores de chile poblano —con más de 40 mil toneladas anuales de producción— y se posiciona en el quinto lugar en producción de fresas con 7,700 toneladas anualmente. Respecto a las hierbas aromáticas, se llega a superar una mies de más 76 toneladas.

Es un evento familiar, se realizan actividades como juegos, concursos, una tradicional cabalgata de Todos Santos a El Pescadero, y pone a disposición de los visitantes la venta de la cosecha. Todos son bienvenidos a participar en la diversión.

In 1723, The Santa Rosa de Todos Santos mission was established and is a significant part of the town's rich history. It is named after the author Gilberto Ibarra Rivera's Diccionario Sudcaliforniano. This charming oasis town in the middle of the desert attracts travelers who appreciate art and culture.

En palabras de Francisco Javier Salgado Agúndez, delegado municipal, es un lugar privilegiado donde se preservan las buenas costumbres del ranchero sudcaliforniano a través de la lealtad y el trabajo.

Lo ideal es pasear tranquilamente por las calles en Todos Santos, es inevitable detenerse a contemplar las construcciones y fachadas, es un ambiente que parece impregnarse con romanticismo y vida. Algunos edificios fungieron en su momento como recintos educativos. Se dice que, los caseríos alrededor de la misión Santa Rosa de Todos Santos (fundada por el padre Segismundo Taraval en 1733) fue donde inició el pueblo y se crearon los primeros huertos.

En el centro, encontrarás galerías que exhiben obras con interesantes discursos artísticos; restaurantes donde puedes deleitarte con la gastronomía local y productos frescos del huerto y del mar a la mesa; hoteles históricos, algunos incluso con leyendas y, por supuesto, sitios de historia.

As you stroll through the streets, you can't help but pause and admire the romantic and lively atmosphere of the beautiful colonial buildings. Interestingly, some of these structures were once used as educational institutions. The town is said to have originated around the Santa Rosa de Todos Santos mission founded by Father Segismundo Taraval in 1733, and the first orchards were established in the nearby hamlets.

At the heart of this place, there are galleries showcasing a variety of works and their histories. You can also find restaurants serving delicious local cuisine made with fresh ingredients from both the orchard and the sea. Additionally, there are historic hotels, some with intriguing legends, and important historical sites to explore.

The Nuestra Señora de Santa Rosa church is located near several notable landmarks, including the Manuel Marquez de León Theatre, built in 1955 to promote cultural activities and provide a picturesque view of the local vegetation.

Todos Santos offers a stimulating environment for intellectual recreation. One of the highlights is the Néstor Agúndez Cultural Centre, where we interviewed Víctor Hugo Caballero Gutiérrez, the general director of the South Californian Institute of Culture. The exhibition halls showcase the town's development, including works of art and instruments of daily life. The center is divided into various sections, including a library, children's rooms, audiovisual, origins, history, art, and gifts.

El Centro Cultural Néstor Agúndez —donde pudimos entrevistar a Víctor Hugo Caballero Gutiérrez, director general del Instituto Sudcaliforniano de Cultura— muestra en sus salas de exhibición el desarrollo del pueblo, obras de arte e instrumentos de la vida cotidiana. Se divide en una biblioteca, salas infantiles, audiovisual, de orígenes, historia, arte y obsequios.

La identidad de la comunidad está estrechamente ligada a las actividades agrícolas, desde sus inicios, en Todos Santos se sembraba tomate, plátano, papa, mango, maíz, entre otras frutas y vegetales. The community's identity is closely tied to its agricultural activities. From the earliest days in Todos Santos, a variety of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, bananas, potatoes, mango, and corn, were cultivated. Today, projects like Palma Serena and Santo Changarro, led by experts in agroecology like Karen Díaz and her husband José Aviña Espinoza, as well as Nikoll Suset Vogas Reynoso, work to optimize and stabilize production sustainably by studying the ecosystem in detail and implementing eco-friendly practices.

La misión de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Todos Santos fue fundada por el padre Jaime Bravo en 1723. Los misioneros introdujeron el oficio del cultivo de la caña de azúcar y su procesamiento en los trapiches, actividad que beneficio enormemente a la población. Entre sus personajes destacados se encuentran Clodomiro Cota, Melitón Albañez, Agustín Olachea Aviles y Dionisia Villarino “La Coronela”. El Teatro “Manuel Márquez de León” fue construido en la década de los cuarenta bajo el apoyo del general Francisco J. Mújica, mientras que el Centro Cultural “Profe. Néstor Agúndez Martínez” abrió sus puertas en 1978 en el antiguo edificio que primeramente albergara una escuela rural para maestros.

In 1723, Father Jaime Bravo established the mission of Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Todos Santos. The missionaries introduced the cultivation of sugar cane and its processing in the sugar mills, which greatly benefited the local population and remains a legacy of their work. This text highlights some of the noteworthy characters in the story, including Clodomiro Cota, Melitón Albañez, Agustín Olachea Aviles, and Dionisia Villarino, who is also known as "La Coronela." The "Manuel Márquez de León" Theatre and the Cultural Centre "Prof. Néstor Agúndez Martínez" were both constructed in the 1940s with the support of General Francisco J. Mújica. En el invierno, las ballenas grises hacen de este puerto su hogar viajan desde las frías aguas del ártico hasta Puerto Chale. Al ser el único santuario de esta especie en el municipio de La Paz, recibe a numerosos visitantes que buscan tener un encuentro con estos mamíferos que se dejan entrever gracias a las condiciones del mar. En general, de enero a abril se considera la mejor temporada para el avistamiento de ballenas.

In the winter, grey whales travel south from the cold arctic waters, making Puerto Chale their home. Puerto Chale is a tranquil fishing community on the shores of the Pacific Ocean and the closest place to La Paz for spotting Grey whales. This sanctuary is the only place this species can be found, making it a popular destination for visitors who want to glimpse these magnificent creatures. In addition, the sea conditions here make it possible to have an encounter with the whales. Generally, January through April is considered the best whale-watching season.

¿Qué sucede cuando termina el invierno y concluye la temporada de ballenas? Comienzan aventuras al explorar sus diversos ecosistemas. Similar a la Isla de Patos en Comondú, numerosas aves pelágicas también encuentran en Puerto Chale un hogar, por lo que pueden realizarse avistamientos para aprender acerca de sus peculiaridades. For instance, Puerto Chale is home to numerous aquatic birds, such as pelicans, gulls, and cormorants, offering a chance to observe their unique characteristics. In addition, Patos Island in Comondú and Punta de Patos, located just a few minutes away, are excellent spots for birdwatching.

The area is also home to abundant mangroves, which serve as a vital nesting ground for frigate birds. These birds gracefully glide through the air while their chicks are cared for in this area. The peaceful silence of the surroundings is only interrupted by the sweet sounds of birds. One can't help but be captivated by the towering mountains surrounding this serene location.

From Puerto Chale, you can also witness one of Latin America's largest sea lion colonies. It is an unforgettable experience. These majestic creatures, of all sizes, will gracefully swim up to greet you, while others bask in the sun on the shore, creating an impressive sight.

Sport fishing is popular in Puerto Chale, where species such as marlin, dorado, jack mackerel, and tuna are caught and released. Finally, the more daring individuals even swim with marlin and mobulas, describing it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. (A mobula is a devil ray smaller than a manta, with a long tail and a mouth on the underside.)

Isla Santa Margarita (Frente a Puerto Chale)

Descubierta durante la navegación de Francisco de Ulloa en 1539, la isla cuenta con planicies áridas, manglares y pequeños manantiales que han favorecido la agricultura en menor escala, aunque la actividad económica más redituable ha sido la explotación de los yacimientos de magnesita descubiertos en 1915. La isla es habitada por grandes manadas de lobos marinos, de los que se han llegado a contar entre dos mil y tres mil ejemplares. En sus aguas también se pueden hallar los restos de dos embarcaciones estadunidenses que han captado la atención de arqueólogos, historiadores y exploradores: el SS Indiana, que naufragó en 1909 por la niebla tan espesa; y el SS Colombia, un lujoso crucero que en 1931 fue hundido por un temporal, sobreviviendo a este desastre Genevieve Tobin, afamada actriz neoyorkina de la Warner Bross.

The island was first discovered in 1539 by Francisco de Ulloa. It has arid plains, mangroves, and small springs that have been beneficial for small-scale agriculture. However, the most profitable economic activity on the island is the exploitation of magnesite deposits found in 1915. The island is also home to large packs of sea lions, with a count of 2,000 to 3,000. The waters here hold the remains of two American ships that have caught the interest of archaeologists, historians, and explorers. The SS Indiana sank in 1909 because of thick fog, while the luxurious SS Colombia, a cruise ship, sank in 1931 due to a harsh storm. Genevieve Tobin, a renowned New York actress at Warner Bros., survived this disaster.

Cuando pensamos en El Triunfo, es indiscutible reconocer que, gracias a su pasado minero, existen ciertas peculiaridades que hacen de esta comunidad, a tan solo 45 minutos de la capital sudcaliforniana, un sitio especial y diferente al resto de la península. Planear una visita es imprescindible. Hay curiosidades por explorar y descubrir.

Al solo transitar por las calles empedradas echarás a volar tu imaginación y meditar sobre el estilo de vida de las familias que conformaron esta comunidad surgida antes del Real de San Antonio (1756) y después del Real de Santa Ana (1748). Las construcciones son vestigios de ese pasado que experimentó el auge durante el siglo XIX. “La Julia” (construida en la década de 1860) y “La Ramona” (edificada en 1980): las dos chimeneas nos recuerdan la gran relevancia de la industria minera de ese entonces.

Durante la <<fiebre del oro>>, en El Triunfo residieron extranjeros provenientes de países como España, Francia, Estados Unidos, Alemania e, incluso, China. Esta multiculturalidad dio como resultado sus emblemáticos panteones, además del cementerio municipal.

En 1751 Manuel de Ocio encontró en el lugar una veta de plata a la que nombró: “El Triunfo de la Santa Cruz”. Junto con el Real de Santa Ana y San Antonio fueron las primeras poblaciones civiles de la península. En 1862 se estableció The Triunfo Mining Company, repuntándose el crecimiento urbano y demográfico. Para finales del siglo XIX se llegó a contar más de 10,000 habitantes que se beneficiaban de la extracción de los metales. Fue uno de los pocos lugares en la península que contó con una red de ferrocarril, que era usada para los trabajos en las minas. La Ramona y La Julia son las dos chimeneas que aún se conservan de la hacienda de beneficio y que se cree fueron diseñadas por el arquitecto Gustave Eiffel. Una hacienda de beneficio era el nombre que se le daba a las haciendas encargadas de fundir el metal que se encontraba en las minas.

Back in 1751, Manuel de Ocio stumbled upon a silver vein in a location he named "El Triunfo de la Santa Cruz." This discovery led to the establishment of the first civil settlements in the peninsula, including Real de Santa Ana and San Antonio. The Triunfo Mining Company was founded in 1862, resulting in significant urban and demographic growth. By the late 19th century, over 10,000 people were benefiting from metal extraction in the area. Additionally, the peninsula boasts a limited number of locations with railway networks utilized for mining operations. The hacienda de beneficio features two remaining chimneys, La Ramona and La Julia, which are believed to have been crafted by renowned architect Gustave Eiffel. A hacienda de beneficio (Benefit Estate) was the name given to the haciendas in charge of smelting the metal found in the mines in New Spain (Mexico).

A poco más de 100 kilómetros de la ciudad de La Paz, Los Barriles es el secreto mejor guardado de los viajeros que disfrutan practicar la pesca deportiva —de mayo a octubre— y actividades basadas en el deslizamiento sobre el agua en el que el viento es el mejor aliado como kitesurfing y windsurfing —de noviembre a marzo—. Es un área con vastos paisajes donde el desierto se encuentra con el Golfo de California, y las montañas de la Sierra de la Laguna forman un hermoso telón de fondo.

Curiosamente, la población aquí varía de acuerdo con la estación y es compuesta, en su mayoría, por extranjeros que residen Los Barriles durante el invierno en búsqueda de la calma que caracteriza a esta región. Geográficamente, se ubica entre Reserva de la Biósfera Sierra La Laguna y Cabo Pulmo, por lo que constantemente, se realizan frecuentes expediciones a estos puntos que se suman a los atractivos alrededor.

If you drive half an hour farther northeast from the Corridor, you'll find the East Cape. It's a different experience compared to the lively vacation hotspot of Los Cabos. The East Cape stretches from San José del Cabo to the town of Los Barriles. It's a remote area with vast landscapes where the desert meets the Sea of Cortez, and the Sierra de la Laguna mountains form a beautiful backdrop.

Located just over 100 kilometers from La Paz, Los Barriles is the best-kept secret of travelers who love sport fishing (available from May to October) and wind-based activities like kitesurfing and windsurfing (available from November to March).

Los Barriles has a seasonal population that mainly consists of foreigners seeking the peaceful atmosphere that characterizes this region during the winter. It is situated between the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve and Cabo Pulmo, which means that there are frequent expeditions to these destinations, adding to the appeal of Los Barriles.

Retrocediendo en la historia, antes los oficios principales eran actividades enfocadas en la ganadería —que era practicada en algunas rancherías— y la pesca comercial, pues es una zona privilegiada con una amplia diversidad de especies, incluyendo marlín, dorado y atún. ¡Es inevitable encontrarse de cara a la aventura!

Adicionalmente, cuenta con la certificación Safe Travels: un distintivo que es otorgado a los destinos que realizan las prácticas de seguridad necesarias para el bienestar de los viajeros y que es validado por la Organización Mundial de Turismo.

El nombre proviene de historias sobre un gran tesoro pirata enterrado en barriles a la orilla de la playa. En 1930 se estableció una colonia agrícola como parte del plan económico de Juan Domínguez Cota, gobernador del territorio. El lugar se vio beneficiado a partir de los años setenta con la llegada de turistas estadunidenses que buscaban descanso en un lugar de playa. A principios de los ochenta ya existían dos hoteles, un pequeño aeropuerto y varias villas en los alrededores.

The name of the place is derived from the tales of a pirate treasure that was supposedly buried in barrels on the beach. In 1930, an agricultural colony was established in the area as part of Gobernador Juan Domínguez Cota's economic plan. The place started thriving in the 1970s when American tourists were attracted to relaxation on the beaches. By the early 1980s, the area had two hotels, a small airport, and several villas in the vicinity.

Si has leído acerca del Golfo de California, seguramente conoces que ha sido considerado como “El Acuario del Mundo” debido a la gran diversidad de especies que habitan en su extensión de un millón 838,12 hectáreas. Las corrientes marinas y la misma geografía de la zona han contribuido de manera positiva a la producción de más de 900 especies.

Isla Santa Margarita posee un magnetismo peculiar. No se trata solo del resplandeciente mar de agua cristalina, sino del misticismo que envuelve este lugar de solo 40 kilómetros de longitud frente a Puerto Chale, en el municipio de La Paz.

De igual forma es conocida como Isla de los naufragios. ¿La razón? Bajo sus aguas, coloridos bancos de peces, corales, crustáceos y demás especies submarinas se han convertido en custodios de buques arrastrados por sorpresivos vientos embravecidos que sucumbieron ante la fuerza del océano.

Entre los más reconocidos, están el SS Indiana y el SS Colombia: embarcaciones de vapor que se hundieron en el extremo sur de la isla. Se encuentran muy próximas una a la otra y, aunque la primera no posee una historia trágica y literalmente ha sido descrito como “el naufragio más hermoso de la historia”, la segunda embarcación no contó con la misma suerte, pues se registraron personas que perdieron la vida. El SS Colombia llevaba a bordo lingotes de oro que se dice, fueron escoltados por un gato, un mono y un perro. Asimismo, se descubrieron los restos del submarino H-1, en el que cuatro de los 25 tripulantes perecieron ante la adversidad.

El motivo de estos lamentables incidentes se atribuye a las corrientes marinas y la densa niebla que se presenta en la región, lo que supone un peligro para los barcos que surcan los mares en determinadas temporadas del año. Sin embargo, entre el susurro de la brisa perfumada de sal y los murmullos del viento se dice que, en realidad, existe una misteriosa fuerza que atrae a los navíos a un inminente final.

Tal vez los relatos sean solo producto de la imaginación, pero, queda disponible el reto para explorar y descifrar el misterio del jardín de los naufragios.

The Mysterious Garden of Shipwrecks

Isla Santa Margarita is surrounded by a peculiar magnetism. The crystal-clear waters of the sea and the mysterious ambiance add to the allure of this 40-kilometer island located off the coast of Puerto Chale in the municipality of La Paz.

The Island of Shipwrecks, as it is widely known, has experienced numerous shipwrecks over the years as a result of strong winds that prevail in the region. Subsequently, the underwater ecosystem surrounding the small island has become a haven for diverse marine life, including vibrant shoals of fish, corals, crustaceans, and other species, who have taken over the sunken ships and now act as their guardians.

Two steamers, the SS Indiana and SS Colombia, sank near the southern tip of the island. They are among the most recognizable shipwrecks and lie quite close to one another. The SS Indiana is known as the "most beautiful wreck in history" while the SS Colombia had a tragic history with the recorded loss of life. The gold bullion, on board the SS Columbia, is claimed to have been protected by a cat, a monkey, and a dog. The submarine H-1's wreckage was also discovered, in which four of the 25 crew members perished valiantly in the face of adversity.

The reason for these unfortunate incidents is the sea currents and dense fog that occur in the region, posing a significant danger to ships sailing during certain times of the year. Nonetheless, there are local murmurs of an enigmatic, mystical power at play, which lures vessels towards their demise amid the sound of the salty wind and murmurs of the sea. As a result, the southern region of Santa Margarita Island has experienced many shipwrecks and numerous (scientific and based on folklore) theories that attempt to explain this phenomenon.

Is it a curse by the ancient pirates who roamed the region? Perhaps the tales are just figments of the imagination, but if there is a time to find out. Today is the day! Go on, explorer!

Este estilo de arte permite a la audiencia imaginar y experimentar representaciones únicas y coloridas de cuentos de varias comunidades en Baja California Sur. Estas ilustraciones incorporan mitos perdurables que todavía existen entre las familias de la región en la actualidad.

Mirza Martínez

Es oriunda de La Paz, Baja California Sur. Desde muy joven, descubrió su preferencia por el arte gráfico debido a su afición por leer historietas japonesas. Mirza ha contribuido como ilustradora en distintas obras, también ha impartido talleres como historietista.

Rafael Flores

Rafael nació en Zacatecas, específicamente en la ciudad de Jalpa. Manifiesta un gran amor por el dibujo al desempeñarse como ilustrador de algunas obras infantiles. Ha trabajado como dibujante principal en el colectivo Topalli y, dentro de sus obras destacadas, se encuentra Devyl.

About the book

Travelling is an excellent source of inspiration that ignites our imagination and leads us to uncover stories passed down from one generation to the next. Narraciones Saladas has been created as a graphic novel that depicts 16 legends from Southern California using both images and text.

This style of artwork enables the audience to envision and experience unique and colorful depictions of tales from various communities in Baja California Sur. These illustrations incorporate enduring myths that still exist among families in the region today.

This book is highly recommended to perpetuate and strengthen the culture of Baja California Sur, especially among children and young adults.

About the authors

Mirza Martínez

Mirza, a native of La Paz, Baja California Sur, discovered her passion for graphic art at a young age through her love for reading Japanese comics. She has since contributed as an illustrator to various works and taught workshops as a cartoonist.

Rafael Flores

Rafael was born in the city of Jalpa, Zacatecas. He has a passion for drawing and has worked as an illustrator for several children's books. He was the principal illustrator in the Topalli collective and has created outstanding works such as Devyl.

Rosa María Mendoza Salgado

Por años recabó datos de la historia de su familia, cuando mostró los documentos a su gran amigo Gilberto Ibarra Rivera, él la alentó para que escribiera su primer, así surgió Huellas Ancestrales, su opera prima de 120 páginas.

A través de la investigación y la divulgación, mantiene el compromiso personal de preservar y compartir la cultura sudcaliforniana, con base en su propia intervención familiar. En el proceso, ha motivado a otros autores a descifrar y plasmar sus propios orígenes. Como profesora, a través de sus alumnos, también ha inculcado el entusiasmo, respeto y admiración por la identidad local.

El deseo de preservar aquellos relatos acerca de los usos y costumbres sociales en su adorado puerto fueron la principal inspiración para adentrarse en la crónica. El resultado son tres obras literarias que se han sumado al acervo bibliográfico calisureño: Huellas Ancestrales—publicado en 2001—, Crónicas de mi puerto La Paz (1830-1959)—publicado en 2014—, y Comercio y turismo en la California del Sur, municipio de La Paz (1697-2016)—publicado en 2017—.

Escucharla con tanta emoción compartir sus descubrimientos acerca del pasado sucaliforniano, despierta una genuina curiosidad por seguir indagando en los eventos que fueron clave para forjar la identidad de la península de la manera en la que la conocemos en la actualidad.

Ella define a Baja California Sur como una tierra diferente. Las costumbres arraigadas tras el arribo de diversas nacionalidades en los diferentes periodos históricos se mantienen sin importar el paso del tiempo, mismas que son reflejadas en aspectos como el lenguaje, educación, vestimenta, gastronomía y tradiciones.

Su pasión por el arte y la cultura le ha valido incluso el premio "Valor Cultural de Baja California Sur" en 1997, reconociendo así su destacada trayectoria.

As Rosita shares her discoveries about Baja California Sur's past with passion and affection, it sparks a genuine curiosity to explore further the pivotal events that shaped the peninsula's identity as we know it today.

She defines Baja California Sur as a different land. Baja California Sur has a rich and unique identity shaped by the arrival of different nationalities throughout history. Despite the passage of time, the customs and traditions of the region have remained intact and can be observed in various aspects such as language, education, clothing, gastronomy, and traditions.

Her passion for art and culture has even earned her the "Cultural Value of Baja California Sur" award in 1997, recognizing her outstanding trajectory.

Alejandro Telechea Cienfuegos

El maestro en ciencias, Alejandro Telecha Cienfuegos es director general del Archivo Histórico Pablo L. Martínez en La Paz: iniciativa impulsada por Miguel León Portilla y otros historiadores que buscaban rescatar documentación antigua y, al mismo tiempo, resguardar la información de valor para la investigación.

Al ser también profesor-investigador en el Departamento Académicos de Humanidades, en la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, Alejandro entiende la importancia del archivo para la memoria histórica-documental de la Península Californiana.

En 1969, historiadores, estudiantes de historia y ciudadanos interesados, persiguieron el rescate del acervo documental con el propósito de crear el Archivo Histórico Sudcaliforniano.

La inauguración fue en el edificio de la Casa de la Cultura, en la ciudad de La Paz, el 9 de mayo de 1969 por el entonces gobernador del Territorio, licenciado Hugo Cervantes del Río.

Actualmente. el Archivo Histórico cuenta con 67 mil documentos y 4,700 fotografías físicas y 1,000 digitalizadas, cada documento es operado por personal capacitado, ya que, el material es de gran valor y requiere una adecuada custodia.

El Archivo Histórico Pablo L. Martínez se encuentra disponible en las modalidades electrónica, libre y gratuita, para consulta en relación con el campo investigativo. Es un edificio en el que incluso se encuentra el documento más antiguo de Baja California Sur, mismo que data de 1774.

Alejandro Telecha Cienfuegos, a Master of Science, is the general director of the Pablo L. Martínez Historical Archive in La Paz. Alejandro is a professor-researcher at the Academic Department of Humanities at the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur. He recognizes the significant role of archives in preserving the historical-documentary memory of the Californian Peninsula.

In 1969, a group of passionate historians, history students, and concerned citizens came together to establish the Archivo Histórico Sudcaliforniano. Their mission was to promote rescuing the documentary heritage of the region for future generations to learn and appreciate.

On May 9th, 1969, the ceremony for inauguration occurred at the Casa de la Cultura building in La Paz. The event was presided over by the then-governor of the Territory, Hugo Cervantes del Río.

At present, the Historical Archive holds 67,000 documents, 4,700 physical photographs, and 1,000 digitized photographs. Trained personnel is responsible for operating each document, as the material is highly valuable and requires proper custody.

Guadalupe Castro Manzano

Es orgullosamente nativa de El Triunfo. Desde muy joven, teje el cogollo de la palma —materia que consigue en Todos Santos— para crear diversos productos de cestería, para algunos tipos de cestos se apoya con alambre.

Su mentora fue Juana Estrada, una persona mayor nativa de El Triunfo, quien la introdujo en el arte del tejido con apenas tenía 10 años, al compartirle sus enseñanzas en la escuela primaria a la que asistía. Le enseñó a trenzar y bordar tapetes, mecatitos y sobrecamas.

Con el tiempo, Guadalupe perfeccionó tanto su técnica, que, esta artesanía —reconocida como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial (PCI) de Baja California Sur— se convirtió en su emprendimiento. Incluso, llegó a impartir cursos de cestería en diferentes partes de Baja California Sur, incluyendo zonas aledañas en comunidades de la sierra, El Rosario y Santiago, entre otros.

Tiene una personalidad alegre, carismática y divertida. Con una sonrisa, recibe a los visitantes que, guiados por la curiosidad, visitan su hogar para apreciar y comprar cestos.

Todavía conserva el gran deseo de seguir trabajando en, lo que ella considera, una técnica ancestral. Con gracia comenta que, una vez que comienza a tejer, no puede parar hasta terminar.

Una acción que la apasiona es el hecho de aportar un oficio a los jóvenes y, de alguna manera, contribuir para que esta artesanía continue. Así fue nuestra conversación con Guadalupe, en quien conocimos las manos expertas de una artesana.

This individual is a proud native of El Triunfo and has been weaving the heart of palm since childhood. She sources this material from Todos Santos and uses it to create a variety of basketry products, sometimes incorporating wire into certain types of baskets.

When she was only ten years old, her mentor Juana Estrada, a senior citizen from El Triunfo, taught her the art of weaving and embroidery. Juana shared her knowledge with her at the primary school and taught her how to create rugs, mecatitos (twine), and sobrecamas (bedspreads).

Guadalupe has become a skilled artisan in the traditional craft of basket weaving, which has been recognized as the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Baja California Sur. She has turned her passion into a successful business and has even taught basketry courses in various parts of the region, including highland communities such as El Rosario and Santiago.

With her cheerful, charismatic, and fun personality, she warmly greets visitors who visit her home to admire and purchase her baskets. Her smile is contagious and invites curiosity.

Guadalupe has a strong desire to continue working with what she considers an ancestral technique. When she starts weaving, she graciously comments that she cannot stop until she finishes.

Our conversation with Guadalupe revealed her passion for passing down her craft to young people and contributing to its continuation. We discovered the expert hands of a skilled craftswoman through our conversation. She is dedicated to preserving and promoting her craft.

Juan Luis Murillo Gonzáles

Juan Luis acompañaba a su padre en una pequeña embarcación sin motor, comenzó a visitar Puerto Chale desde los siete años. En ese entonces, no habitaban muchas personas, sino que venían desde los ranchos de alrededor para realizar actividades de pesca. Desde entonces, es residente de esa comunidad pesquera donde crecieron sus 10 hijos.

Mero, robalo, callo de hacha, camarón y almeja son algunos de los productos que más extraían del mar. Juan Luis define la pesca en Puerto Chale como una de las actividades más bonitas que realizaban en su infancia. Incluso recuerda que embarcaciones provenientes de otros lugares visitaban este puerto, donde el viento y el sol son una constante, para adquirir pesca fresca.

En la memoria de Juan Luis persisten recuerdos en los que aquellas personas que llegaban a Puerto Chale descansaban a la orilla del mar. Los jóvenes de entonces se dirigían a los manglares, simplemente a gozar del lujo simple que provee la naturaleza. Nos comentó también que, una de las razones por las que la población es tan escasa es debido al tema del agua, pues la gente acarreaba el vital líquido desde las rancherías en cubetas que transportaban en el lomo de los burros.

Eventualmente, más familias se mudaron a Puerto Chale, especialmente cuando comenzaron las actividades relacionadas al avistamiento de ballenas, hace aproximadamente cuatro años. La población se compone, principalmente, por familias que provenían de la ciudad de La Paz y sus alrededores.

Juan Luis has been visiting Puerto Chale since he was seven years old, accompanying his father on a small motorless boat. At that time, only a handful of people lived there, mostly from nearby ranches, for fishing. Over time, Juan Luis became a resident of this fishing community where he raised his ten children.

He has fond memories of fishing in Puerto Chale, where he would catch grouper, snook, scallops, shrimp, and clams. He recalls how boats from other areas would come to the port to purchase the fresh catch, which was made even more enjoyable by the constant presence of sun and wind.

In Juan Luis' memory, memories persist of those who came to Puerto Chale to relax on the beach. During that time, young people would go to the mangroves to appreciate the natural beauty. He also explained that one of the reasons for the low population is water scarcity. In the past, people would transport water from nearby rancherías on donkeys carrying buckets.

Over the past four years, Puerto Chale has seen an increase in its population due to the rise of whalewatching activities. Most of the inhabitants in the area are families who migrated from La Paz and its surrounding areas.

According to Juan Luis, life in Puerto Chale is peaceful and steadily improving. He is confident that it will evolve further and provide an extraordinary destination for travelers seeking a secluded location surrounded by nature.

The Musical Presence in El Triunfo

En 1700 arribaron por mar extranjeros de Inglaterra, Francia, Austria, Alemania, Italia, China, Suecia y Estados Unidos a la California del Sur. Estas personas contribuyeron a los dotes musicales de la localidad su cultura, donando un poco de sus bailes y ritmos, que se fusionaron con los sonidos del norte de México.

In the 18th century, seafarers from diverse nations travelled to Southern California, including England, France, Austria, Germany, Italy, China, Sweden, and the United States. As they arrived, they brought a wealth of musical traditions, dances, and rhythms embraced by the local communities. Over time, these musical influences eventually blended with the rhythms and melodies of northern Mexico, culminating in a rich and dynamic harmonious environment that is still recognized and cherished today.

Durante el apogeo de El Triunfo surgido con el auge minero, muchas familias de élite, inversionistas de “Real de Minas de Santa Ana”, se asentaron en el pueblo; para ellos era importante contar con instrumentos musicales en su nuevo hogar.

Trajeron pianos de todo el mundo, y se cuenta que, en aquellos tiempos aquí, existían más pianos “per cápita” que en cualquier otra ciudad en el país. La música era una educación elemental durante la niñez: se acostumbraba a tocar la guitarra, violín, piano; y aprender canto gregoriano y lírica.

Todavía, a mediados del siglo XIX, el instrumento más escuchado y tocado era el piano, acompañado del canto lírico de una voz femenina; un hábito de las familias pudientes del pueblo. Era así como pasaban las tardes: practicando y ensayando.

Los conciertos y puestas en escena de piano eran tan concurrentes que era el emblema local de los habitantes. La música de pianoforte era el acompañamiento de eventos, bailes y festividades

Con los años, misteriosamente, este remoto pueblo aislado, fue tierra de cultivo de un linaje de maestros y de concertistas de música culta occidental, clásica y barroca, dando a Baja California Sur célebres músicos y compositores.

Por ejemplo: pianista Nicolás Carrillo Castro, originalmente Nicolás Saints, descendiente de pobladores franceses y uno de los personajes más populares de El Triunfo.

At the peak of El Triunfo's mining boom, numerous elite families and investors from "Real de Minas de Santa Ana" relocated to the town. So naturally, it was crucial for them to have musical instruments in their new homes.

During that time, pianos were brought from all over the world, resulting in this city having the highest number of pianos "per capita" compared to any other city in the country. Additionally, music education was considered an integral part of childhood development. Children were taught to play instruments such as the guitar, violin, and piano; and learn about Gregorian and lyrical chant.

During the mid-19th century, the piano persisted as the most popular instrument and was commonly accompanied by the melodious singing of women from affluent families. As a result, their evenings were spent practicing and rehearsing.

Piano concerts and performances were popular among the locals and became a symbol of the community. Additionally, during events, dances, and festivities, it was customary to have pianoforte music as a background. (Pianoforte, also known as fortepiano, is primarily used for instruments manufactured prior to 1830. It has its roots in Italy and was later abbreviated to piano.)

Over the years, this remote and isolated village has been the birthplace of a lineage of masterful musicians and concert pianists of Western, classical, and baroque music, resulting in the production of celebrated musicians and composers in Baja California Sur.

For instance, one of El Triunfo's popular personalities was the pianist Nicolás Carrillo Castro, whose real name was Nicolás Saints. He was a descendant of early French settlers. The musical inspiration of the past continues to thrive in El Triunfo.

El Faro Viejo

¡Meh! ¿Cómo no conoces el Faro Viejo de Cabo San Lucas?

Meh! How do you not know the Old Lighthouse at Cabo San Lucas?

Este año, el Faro Viejo cumplió 118° de haberse inaugurado. Este coloso fue edificado por decreto de Porfirio Díaz en 1905, fue equipado con el mecanismo y sistema de iluminación más avanzados de París, Francia. La navegación comercial empezó a tener un punto de desarrollo destacado en esa época.

El ingeniero español Joaquín Palacios Gómez, (muy buen amigo del Ing. Gustave Eiffel), fue quién determinó el sitio de construcción; la maquinaria se mantenía en funcionamiento de forma permanente. La única regla que se exigía era que el farero viviera en el sitio.

Determinado el espacio cerca de las dunas, se empezó la construcción del faro, con una estructura arquitectónica de acero y hierro que fue símbolo de progreso y muestra de los últimos avances en ingeniería. Contaba con una torre de diez metros de altura donde se instaló un destellador giratorio con luz blanca de una frecuencia de 4 segundos con alcance de 10 millas náuticas, energizado con gas de petróleo. Para su mecanismo, se ordenó la fabricación de tres prismas de cristal de roca (cuarzo) tallados pieza por pieza por artesanos, dándole al lente una forma circular-cóncava, unidos los rectángulos entre sí.

Pero llevar los materiales no era tarea fácil. El Ing. Joaquín formó una vía de rieles a todo lo largo de las dunas. El material lo desembarcaban y lo subían en carretas, llegaban a los vagones y transportaban el material. Esos mismos rieles donde trasladaban el material, los deshizo y formó la base para edificar los cimientos.

El faro fue inaugurado el 5 de mayo de 1905. A lo largo de su funcionamiento, varios fareros estuvieron dedicados a la operación como: Rafael Tomás Sandoval Mantecón, Agustín Payén Salazar, Marcos Payen Sandoval, Miguel Ángel Herrera Morales y Néstor Herrera.

Durante más de 50 años, el Faro fue guía de toda clase de embarcaciones que transitaban por estas aguas, siendo de gran relevancia para las rutas comerciales. El faro se mantuvo en actividad ininterrumpida hasta 1965 cuando un huracán de gran magnitud destrozó su mecanismo. A pesar del impacto devastador el edificio se ha mantenido firme.

La importancia histórica del Faro Viejo sigue siendo un testimonio de notables hazañas.

This year, the Faro Viejo de Cabo celebrated the 118th anniversary of its inauguration. This historic structure was commissioned by Porfirio Diaz in 1905 and was equipped with the latest technology and lighting from Paris, France. The Old Lighthouse of Cabo Falso served as a crucial point for commercial navigation during a time of unprecedented growth in the industry.

The construction site for the lighthouse was determined by Joaquín Palacios Gómez, a Spanish engineer who was a close friend of Eng. Gustave Eiffel. The machinery was kept in permanent operation, and the only required rule was that the lighthouse keeper had to live on site.

After choosing a location near the dunes, the lighthouse was constructed using modern architectural techniques with steel and iron materials. It is an example of the latest engineering advances of that time. It stood at a height of ten meters and featured a rotating flashing light that emitted white light every 4 seconds, visible up to 10 nautical miles away. The light was powered by petroleum gas. To create the lens, skilled craftsmen meticulously cut three rock crystal (quartz) prisms into circular-concave shapes and joined the rectangles together. This lens design was an incredible feat of engineering at the time.

Joaquín found it difficult to transport the materials needed for the construction of the lighthouse. To make it easier, he created a rail track along the length of the dunes to load and unload the materials onto wagons for transportation. After the materials were transported, he repurposed the rails to form the base for the foundations.

The lighthouse was finally inaugurated on May 5th, 1905, with dedicated lighthouse keepers such as Rafael Tomás Sandoval Mantecón, Agustín Payén Salazar, Marcos Payén Sandoval, Miguel Ángel Herrera Morales, and Néstor Herrera serving throughout its operation.

For over 50 years, the Lighthouse has been an essential guide for all vessels transiting these waters, which is crucial for commercial routes. Unfortunately, an extensive hurricane destroyed its mechanism in 1965, halting its operation. Despite the devastating impact of that hurricane, it has continued to stand resolute and indestructible.

El Faro Viejo significance cannot be overstated, and it remains a testament to the remarkable engineering feats of the past.

Cabo San Lucas' Bay is a beautiful natural protected area and is the central hub for tourism development. The Asociación Femenil de Ejecutivas de Empresas Turísticas de la República Mexicana (AFEET) Baja California Sur supported the planning and execution of the "Fundraising Gala for Cero Basura BCS." This event was made possible due to the generosity of the Mirador Oceanview Restaurant and the participation of the Todos Santos community.

La Asociación Femenil de Ejecutivas de Empresas Turísticas de la República Mexicana (AFEET) Baja California Sur, apoyó la organización y realización de la <<Gala para la recaudación de fondos para Cero Basura BCS>>. El evento se realizó gracias a la generosidad del Mirador Oceanview Restaurant y la participación de la comunidad de Todos Santos.

Se reunieron los talentos del chef Alejandro Villagómez, nombrado por la revista Food & Wine como uno de los mejores nuevos chefs en México; Nelly Velasco, chef de AFEET y el chef Ernesto Torres, de Grupo Guaycura para hacer una tarde espectacular. Todo el menú se preparó con productos donados por los agricultores locales sostenibles de la tierra y el mar, que incluyeron: ostras de Sol Azul, kampachi de Omega Azul, totoaba de Earth Ocean Farms y Pesca Con Futuro, vegetales de Sueño Tropical, Palma Serena, Baja Sage, y café de Baja Beans.

En la cena se presentó la célebre soprano, Marcela Chacón de la Compañía Nacional de Ópera en México, acompañada del pianista, Sergio Vázquez, principal del Coro de Cámara del Centro Nacional de las Artes. Los invitados degustaron tequila y cócteles por cortesía de Casa Cuervo.

AFEET Baja California Sur coordinó una subasta con apoyo de artistas que donaron sus obras y productores locales que aportaron sus bienes o servicios. Se logró una recaudación de $523,031 MXN a beneficio de los proyectos sustentables de Cero Basura BCS.

Chef Alejandro Villagómez, recognized as one of the best new chefs in Mexico by Food and Wine magazine, received assistance from Nelly Velasco, chef of AFEET, and chef Ernesto Torres of Grupo Guaycura. The ingredients used in the menu were generously donated by local, sustainable farmers specializing in land and sea produce. The menu featured oysters from Sol Azul, kampachi from Omega Azul, totoaba from Earth Ocean Farms and Pesca Con Futuro, and vegetables from Sueño Tropical, Palma Serena, and Baja Sage. Additionally, the coffee used was provided by Baja Beans.

During the dinner, attendees enjoyed a performance by the renowned soprano Marcela Chacón from the National Opera Company in Mexico. Pianist Sergio Vázquez, the principal of the Chamber Choir of the National Arts Centre, accompanied her. Guests were also treated to tequila tastings and cocktails provided by Casa Cuervo.

Cero Basura BCS partnered with AFEET Baja California Sur to hold an auction. Various artists donated their works, and local producers contributed products and services. Together, they raised a total of MXN 523,031. Cero Basura BCS will use the funds collected to support their cause. Cero Basura BCS and AFEET Baja California Sur continue to promote and support events that secure a healthier and prosperous future for Baja California Sur.

Este 2023, como iniciativa de la de la Organización Mundial de las Naciones Unidas, celebramos por primera vez el Día Internacional de Cero Desechos: movimiento que promueve modalidades de consumo y producción sostenibles, encaminando a la sociedad hacia una economía circular, consciente con el medio ambiente.

Compartiendo ese cometido, la alianza Cero Basura BCS —fundada por Alejandro Flores Márquez, Bryan Batson Jáuregui, Mayra Victoria Gutiérrez Sandoval, McKenzie Campbell y Caitlin Allen— comparte objetivo, pasión y misión similares.

Las 5 claves del movimiento de cero residuos deberían ser: Desechar, Reducir, Reutilizar, Reaprovechar y Reciclar.

• Residuos Orgánicos — el objetivo es desviar los residuos orgánicos hacia la fabricación de tierra mediante la implementación de la Campaña de Compostaje Comunitario, apoyando a las pequeñas y medianas instalaciones de abono y estableciendo una Granja Comunitaria de Compostaje. Nuestro objetivo es aumentar la cantidad de residuos orgánicos que se reutilizan y reciclan.

The United Nations World Organization adopted a resolution on December 22nd, 2022, proclaiming March 30th, 2023, the first annual International Zero Waste Day. The movement aims to advance environmentally conscious, circular economies by promoting, encouraging, and supporting sustainable production and consumption patterns. This is a celebration of positivity for a healthier future and planet. Our success depends on all of us standing together in our common mission.

Cero Basura BCS is an alliance formed by: Alejandro Flores Márquez, Bryan Batson Jáuregui, Mayra Victoria Gutiérrez Sandoval, McKenzie Campbell, and Caitlin Allen with a similar objective, passion, and mission. The Todos Santos - El Pescadero communities and the entire state benefit from forming this alliance and weaving a network of affiliates.

The “5 Rs” that make up the basic rules of zero waste movement are: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle. The aim is to educate, inspire, and connect the community to engage in zerowaste practices and support waste management systems.

• Organic Waste— the focus on diverting organic waste to soil manufacturing by implementing the Community Composting Campaign, supporting small and medium composting facilities, and establishing the Community Composting Farm. Our goal is to increase the amount of organic waste that is reused and recycled.

• Compromiso Escolar — A partir de sus proyectos piloto con la Escuela Palapa y el Centro Todos Santos de la Universidad Estatal de Colorado, ahora extenderán los programas de gestión de residuos a las 16 escuelas públicas de Todos Santos y Pescadero.

• Participación Comunitaria — Han establecido asociaciones con festivales y eventos para fomentar y aplicar prácticas de cero residuos en cada ocasión, y pronto pondrán en marcha la campaña Todos Santos Proud y la campaña “Adopta una Playa”.

• Reducción de Residuos — se asociaron con Water Ways Baja y empresas locales para crear una red de estaciones públicas de recarga de botellas de agua con el fin de disminuir el número de botellas de agua de plástico de un solo uso que se compran en la comunidad. Esta red seguirá creciendo.

• Separación de Residuos — se asoció con el departamento municipal de saneamiento de La Paz para lanzar un programa de separación de residuos para la comunidad. Trabajaron con tres empresas locales en la fase piloto y ahora están extendiendo el programa a toda la comunidad. Empresas locales y ciudadanos se han convertido en guardianes ambientales al mantener este compromiso con la salud y el bienestar de Baja California Sur, aportando a la comunidad a la climática global. ¡Forma parte del cambio! Ya sea que desees formar parte del equipo quieres actuar para crear un futuro de cero residuos, hay un espacio para ti. • School Engagement — building on their pilot projects with Palapa School and the Colorado State University Todos Santos Center, they will now roll out waste management programs to all 16 public schools in Todos Santos and Pescadero.

• Community Engagement — they have formed partnerships with festivals and events to encourage and implement zero-waste practices on every occasion, and will soon be launching the Todos Santos Proud Campaign and the Adopt-a-Beach campaign.

• Waste Reduction — they teamed up with Water Ways Baja and local businesses to create a network of public water bottle refill stations to decrease the number of single-use plastic water bottles purchased in the community. This network will continue to grow.

• Waste Separation — partnered with the La Paz municipal sanitation department to launch a waste separation program for the community. They worked with three local businesses in the pilot phase and now rolling the program out to the wider community.
