Junior Cycle SUBJECT:

Wellbeing What will I learn in this subject? Wellbeing is present when a person realises their potential , is resilient in dealing with the normal stresses of their life, takes care of their physical wellbeing, and has a sense of purpose, connection and belonging to a wider community. Wellbeing is at the core of the framework for Junior Cycle. In CP Setanta along with classes in PE, CSPE and SPHE students have a timetabled Wellbeing class. These classes focus on the indicators of wellbeing including resilience, being active, connection, responsibility, respect and awareness. How will I learn in this subject? In this class students will have the opportunity to explore their own physical, emotional and social wellbeing while building on the key skills and resources they have to look after their own wellbeing. Topics include mindfulness, stress, anxiety, grief, transition, reflection, growth mindset, anger management, healthy eating…etc. Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School? In Primary school you will have already developed many of your own skills and resources in looking after your wellbeing. For example, you may have tried meditation, mindful colouring or exercise. In CP Setanta you will have the opportunity to continue developing these skills as well as picking up a few more along the way. How will this subject be useful to me? Through Wellbeing lessons we will work together to build your skills and resources so that when you face life’s challenges you can easily overcome them. We are all faced with challenges and difficult times in our lives at one point or another. Developing your personal abilities to communicate with yourself and others, learning to understand your emotional intelligence and stability, along with expanding your adaptability to change through Wellbeing class will be useful to you throughout your lifetime. Assessment? Student’s learning in Wellbeing Class is recognised on their Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement. Throughout their time in Junior Cycle Wellbeing classes student’s engagement, participation and willingness to try out new skills are all considered for the JCPA.
